  • IN THIS WEEKS VIDEO...WALLPLATE AND PIKES ...SMALL EXTENSION BUILD WE GET THE FACE AND BLOCKWORK UP TO LINTEL HEIGHT INCLUDING CAVITY TIES AND INSULATION . WE INSTALL THE TWO CAVITY LINTELS THEN THE WALL PLATE FOR THE ROOF TO SIT ON.
    FINALLY WE BUILD THE SECOND AND LAST PIKE WHICH COMPLETES THE SMALL EXTENSION BUILD ...ENJOY

    Ah the days before the old magnetic trowel holster and brick hammer holder. 😂 Interesting you mentioned the frozen north still on the 100mm cavity’s, like wise down here in “ Kings Landing”. I do wonder when the next big cavity change will come. My cavities tend to start at 100 and some how get bigger so I am future proofing my jobs. 😂

    Great tutorial, like the tips on the lintels. I hate the end of the day and you see all the mess as you've been concentrating on the build. Looks like a nice little job👍🧱⚒

      Cheers Chris , I never price to include tidying up time but will be from now on 🙄, it’s all part of the job .
      I’ve been back and it’s a cracking utility / toilet . Its a great addition to the house .

    Love seeing someone else work, but that extension is the size of a shoe box about a meter wide

    Good job Steve and Alex, well done. It was a long day! I see this time you used proper cavity wall lintels even there is so little weight over them, being small single story extensions. Watching your other videos, it seems the litels for much bigger and heavier walls were so flimsy. Do you mind telling us more about litels and the wisdom how you select them please?
    Also if the lintel is galvanised, why do we need a damproof membraine over it? Thanks in advance

      I’ve been using it for 36 years and never had a problem.

      It all depends on the roof type and pitch .
      Top of our wallplate on this particular job is 2250 mm .

    Wall plate shouldn’t go that far it should be cut up to the blockwork not over

    Dont you need wall starters on both the inner and outer wall? You only dont outer just wanted to know that's all

      Yes David , it’s 450 mm or 6 courses of metric face bricks 🧱 👍🏽

    Have you got any videos of you doing the vertical dpc? I've just got a wall starter kit and it is saying to do a vertical dpc. I notice you always do it. Do you have to?
    If you do t have a video please could you explain it a little bit. Do I connect the metal starter to the wall above the horizontal dpc too?

      We don’t use the starter kits so can’t advise on them .
      As for the dpc we cut up the wall and slot a 4 “ dpc into the slot . 🧱👍🏽

      We start below damp and go all the way up and just wedge it in 🧱👍🏽

    Theses kinds of small extensions always surprise me. There's absolutely no way that it would get approved in the vast majority of North American cities. Its just way too close to the property line.
