I would have replaced Death 13 with Darby the gambler.
Jotaro wins because of Jotaro instead of Star Platinum, and the breakdown (BREAKDOWN) of Darby was amazing to watch.
Yeah, Death 13 was ok, but to this day Darby is one of my favorites.
Darby really got me on the edge of my seat like few other fights ever managed to. It definitely would have taken that spot for me. Maybe still would even if we included stands from later parts, because out of all the stand types I think the automatics show the strongest improvement as the series progresses, culminating in the perfection that is the pseudo-automatic Paisley Park.
Star Platinum was still a big part, it was just used in a different way.

Throwing in another "I agree" comment, D'arby the gambler had me in cold sweats literally. I can understand the choice for death 13 though.
I always felt bad watching the jojos watch as Dio’s body burn in the sunlight. Can’t help but think they’d prefer to take Johnathans body to be buried, instead essentially cremating him on the spot cause his body was ruined by dio.
It also always made me wonder what dio did with Jonathan’s head. Left it at the bottom of the ocean?
He most likely ate it for nutrients.

The character had an unloved childhood, a best friend who instantly hated him without reason, was considered a man of priveledge despite struggles, had his damn dog burned alive.....and through it all kept on being virtuous and hopeful only to die young and have his body taken and mutilated by his enemy.

Something else that's really cool about Josuke and Kira as combating characters is the contrast of their personal stories.
Josuke is a lovable delinquent with a lack of drive, but a very masculine capacity for healing and forgiveness. He has values, which he is willing to lay down his life to defend, and while they come partially from his single mother (who we see throughout the anime disciplining him with the sternness and love of two parents), they're manifested in a masculine role model that he became attached to as a little boy. This is a very common and positive thing for young, fatherless men, and it gives Josuke a standard of masculinity to meet by standing up in fights where his unsure, flakey tendencies (which we see in the rat hunting episode and his introduction into the series, and which Rohan complains about) would otherwise drive him into taking the path of least resistance.
Kira is like a dark reflection of all of that. The child of a single father who completely failed his son by continuously trying to cover for him and protect him. Kira was precious because he was the last son of an old family, and his father didn't want to risk losing him by getting help for these tendencies he was showing as early as elementary school. He's driven, egotistical, and socially successful, with a capacity for ultimate destruction. He avoids conflict with anyone but the most vulnerable of society and prefers to kill indirectly whenever possible.
It's really fucking cool, because it's a duality of people who actually exist and shows that Araki has a more nuanced view of single parenting than most people. He portrays, completely, the difference between bad circumstances (which Josuke and his mother compensate for in an organic way), and bad parenting (which enabled Kira).
You can actually see his understanding of similar characters in pretty much every arc of the show if you think about it. Dio, Joseph, Caesar, Jotaro, Josuke, Kira, Giorno, Jolyne, and on and on - all have aspects of this theme, and all handle it a bit differently.

That's my favorite mental fight of the series, but let's be honest, it's pretty much ALL mental. Sure, Jotaro used his Stand's abilities to support himself, but no punches are thrown, and it isn't really a "fight" so much as it is a game with dangerous consequences for both sides if they lose.

Not only does d'arby play some genius/ridiculous tricks (like with the chocolate or everyone in the area being hired by him), but if d'arby has something you want from him you cant just brute force him into defeat. It also really shows how great the power system is, sincd d'arby could defeat anyone (in theory, anyway).

My favorite Jojo fight out of what I've seen in the anime so far is probably Jotaro vs. D'Arby the Gambler, mostly because I feel like it embodies what a Jojo fight is all about - getting inside your opponent's head and outwitting them, and it does so with the bare minimum of actual physical violence. D'Arby establishes himself as an enemy by taking out Polnareff almost immediately; he establishes himself as a genuine threat when he manages to outfox Joseph, the guy who spent pretty much all of Battle Tendency flying by the seat of his pants and toppling godlike beings through a combination of cunning, improvisation, and sheer dumb luck. What follows is the most tense and riveting round of poker in a work of fiction, which Jotaro wins through a combination of gas-lighting D'Arby with Star Platinum, and relying on his naturally stoic, unreadable poker face to pull off the mother of all high stakes bluffs. And watching D'Arby fall completely to pieces over it is one of the most satisfying moments in the entire arc.
The recurring villains problem was 100% fixed in Steel Ball Run
Changing from weekly schedules to monthly did wonders for Araki.
Pucci was fairly recurring too.

One of my favorite fights in Jojo is the Older Darby fight. It's a great fight that can be intense but goofy at the same time but the real reason I love the fight is that it was the first Jojo arc I showed my Dad. He isn't all that into anime but when I showed that fight to him, he got pretty interested in Jojo, and now we're watching DIU together as it airs on Toonami. Great video Geoff, keep up the great work.

My fave fight is still the poker battle vs Darby sr. I just really enjoyed how I couldn’t figure out how to beat the user or the stand. And I love that they never really do either, instead out bluffing him. I can’t think off hand of another scenario where they won like that. And the tension built up through the encounter in both the manga and anime is a master class on the subject

Well to be fair it's only wamuu in the anime because of copyright laws.
Wham is his actual name, they changed it in the english version to avoid copyright with the real life band Wham. Wham from jjba is actually named after a band, just like AC/DC and Kars (named after The Cars)

One of my favorite fight gags was in Phantom Blood in Jonathan Joestar's epic battle with Dio. When Dio is putting his face back together, realizes he made it slightly non-level and then corrects it before it heals that way permanently.
I REALLY like the death thirteen battle due to how it gave my favorite cherry boy a chance to shine. I will always be sad that araki never gave him and avdol the time and development they deserved, but this is a nice place over for that.
Jouske's final battle with Kira was such a good chess match. It was so intense even ARAKI didn't even know how that battle was going to end until the very end. You feel that tension across the entirety of the fight.
Ah ceasar, you were so close to being as cool as jonathan. Super eyepatch wolf also pointed out how this fight was important to araki's writing style when writing death that affected the rest of the series for the better.
Oh Jotaro vs DIO. In my mind one of the BEST final battles shonen has brought us. The set up for this fight was a textbook definition of "darkest hour" for Jotaro and the ensuing fight was EPIC in every sense of the word.

I certainly hope that's not referencing what I think it's referencing...
Personally I think the Chariot Battle with Wamuu is a stronger fight than Caeser's just in terms of the structure and dynamics of the fight. The Caesar fight is good but it don't think it plays to each combatants strengths quite like the chariot battle, it also depends a lot more heavily on the death scene. The chariot battle in contrast builds upon the precedent set by the previous encounters with wamuu, with every individual beat tying into each fighter's skills and past, as well as seeing both Joseph and Wamuu backing into corners at various moments unlike the mostly one sided fight Caeser had up.until the end. The conclusion I feel, is just as emotionally strong as Caesar's Death, albeit for different reason. With Caeser's Sacrific being essential to Joseph's victory and Wamuu's honorable defeat being met with a show of kindness rather than malice, displaying Joseph's development as a character, given he used to care only for himself and gave no respect to his opponents. It's a great payoff before the final fight.
That said the Caeser Battle is a strong Mirror Match with Wamuu essentially being his equivalent in terms of talent and personality on the pillar men's side. They are both proud warriors, they both feel obliged to their mentor/parental figure (Lisa Lisa and Kars) and they are both prodigies in battle. It really feels like a contest of equals and a good wakeup call given the last two battles with pillarmen ended in the hero's favour.

Also i never understood why it is considered such a sad scene when you didn't even got the time to connect with Caeser and he wasn't even that likable (being a prick most of the time).

Yes. The chariot battle doesnt get nearly enough love. It's honestly my favorite fight in the series, and at the very least rivals the climactic battles we'd get in the later parts. It's the real final battle of part 2. It builds upon everything that came before it, and it has some of the best strategy and trickery in the entire series. Joseph doesn't have a powerful stand to rely on. He's a normal human. He has hamon, but that only gets him so far. Jotaro relies on an incredibly strong stand. Giorno has one of the strongest stands in the series (even prior to GER). The only other Joestar that feels like they're fighting from behind is Joylne. She has a legitimately weak stand that she requires her to really think outside the box to beat her enemies.

Specifically in the Road Roller scene. The first ORA vs. MUDA scene wasn't quite as good as the Japanese, unfortunately.

@@benjaminherrera1987 Born This Way was a lot of fun, not only because the sheer strangeness of a mortocycle that attacks you with freezing wind every time you open something, but primarily because it's when Paisley Park first shows up. Paisley Park is easily in my top 3 stands, alongside D4C and Killer Queen.

Ok can somebody tell me what ppl like about the love train fight (i am assuming that is the fight you are talking about). Yeah the interactions in the fight are good but the fight itself is meh. This is the fight:

Makz Ionut *SPOILER WARNING* that fight was fucking amazing I’m not sure how you can’t love that fight. It had me on the edge of my seat the whole time and *SPOILER WARNING* when Johnny used Gyros ball to spin his dead horses legs to kick Johnny in the air(which is a callback to when they first met in chapter 1 how Johnny touched the ball and it made his legs spin) pulling out Act 4 and achieving infinite rotation was the hypest moment in all of JoJo.

I never understood why people disliked stands and preferred hamon. Stands give the show this unique kind of intellectual and strategical side that hamon didn’t really have.

Me too. Honestly, If you want to watch buff men fighting with energy flowing through their bodies then you could check Hokuto no Ken, ya know, the original doing that kind of stuff.
As MB said in the video, the Hamon fights gave the same primal feeling of imminent danger with a life on the line that close range stand battles do. I like to see it as the difference between say a martial arts fight and a shoot-off. Both when done well are fun to watch, but typically a shoot-off is more tension whereas a battle between martial artists will be more guttural excitement. And with the way Joseph fights and uses his Hamon, those early fights are practically short range stand battles except the people are throwing punches, not their familiars.
All that being said, both kinds of fight are very well done in the anime so I can't complain about either. ^^
Personnaly I prefer Hamon because it makes the fight less predictable and formulaic. While I do appreciate the wider possibilities and prevalence of intellectual fight that Stands brings to the serie, I dislike how many of stand battles are organized so far in the anime (I'm currently in the middle of Diamond is unbreakable). Maybe the manga doesn't have this issue, but usually a Stand battle will take either one or two episodes, and have the same "rythm". Stardust Crusader is especially bad in that regard. You can almost guess when the fight is gonna be flipped on it's head, and very often it get dumbed down to "figure one or two things and then win the fight". Some Stand in part 3 and many stand in part 4 manage to escape this, but even then I feel like Battle Tendency had a much better "back and forth" sort of feeling, with fights like Esidisi and Waamu being the crown juel for me. They weren't automatically bound to the boundaries of a predetermined episodes, and in return the episodes didn't had to be almost completly dedicated to the fights, it felt much more natural to me.
I love Stands, but I also wish that Hamon hadn't been completely forgotten. Imagine the part 3 Dio fight if Joseph had bothered to teach Jotaro even a little bit of Hamon.

One of my favorite stand fights that I'm looking forward to in the Part 5 anime adaption is The Florence-Bound Express Train fight, versus The Grateful Dead and Beach Boy. (SPOILERS)
It's a rare instance of a Jojo fight where TWO enemies team up with their stand abilities to try take down the entire protagonist team. It starts off as a hide and seek chase where the enemies struggle to find the gang (hiding inside stand turtle) on the train. So they're forced to use their stands to lure them out. It then turns into a horror scenario with every passenger rapidly aging (old baby, anyone?), including the heroes.
This incapacitates the gang, excluding Bruno, Guido and Trish who survive by lucky circumstance as they learn how to counterract the aging. They have no choice but to engage the enemies in a close-quarters fight on a moving train, against the clock before they age too. Not only is the the fight enticing, but the enemies are interesting too. Despite their limited screen time, we learn they have a real sense of camaraderie between them, with one acting almost like an older brother teaching the other how to be a true assassin.

Darby senior us one of the mist suspenseful fights in all if jojo. The constant raising if the stakes from jotaro betting everyone's soles and refusing to look at his own hand was suspenseful as hell.
The band references alone make this worth the watch just to see how many more they can come up with.

Fusion, I think you are incorrect to say that it's technically correct to refer to the stand user as the stand. I say this, because the reasoning you use; that the stand is a part of the person, so they can be referred to by the same name, is not very sound. For instance, would you ever call Jotaro Star Platinum? No, because even though they're unable to be separated, and Star Platinum is a part of him, it is still not him. Also, we have seen stands specifically act out of their own volition before, like Cheap Trick and Anubis. These stands are most definitely different entities from their users, so they are arguably not a part of them.

Well that was a great list. And god dammit i love The Dio-Jotaro fight, i still remember how mindblowing it was for me when Dio's stand power ability was finally revealed, and how hopeless everything seemed against something....so goddamn unfair, haha!

Grateful Dead and Beach Boy is my favorite fight from Parts 1-6. Catch the Rainbow and Tubular Bells are my favorite fights from Part 7. (haven't read Part 8 yet).

I disagree when u say best fights are in p7 and p8, I think that beach boy&greatful dead, white album, and green day&oasis are some of the best in jojos, all from part 5
part 5 has some of the weakest characters and undoubtedly the weakest main antagonist in the series, but its second half has probably the highest concentration of top-quality fights to date.

@@italianfoodname534 P5 main gang is pretty lackluster outside of Mista. I'd put it behind parts 6 and 4, and about on level with part 3. Also behind the teams from parts 2 and 7 and whatever you want to call what we have going on in part 8. At least part 5's gang has the best character designs.
As for minor villains... eh. Those have never been Jojo's strong suit, and I'd honestly say they peak in parts 3 and 4. The fights are great, but the villains themselves often don't leave much of an impression outside of main antagonists.

@@italianfoodname534 Hell yes the part 3 antagonists with unique gimmicks and bombastic personalities are more interesting than the generic dudes from part 5. Babyface guy, Beach Boys guy, and Green Day guy are the only ones I actually remember at all from part 5. I remember plenty of stands and fights from part 5, because the stands and fights are very good, but can't really say anything about any of the stand users outside of those three.
All the part 5 characters are just so lifeless, and only *one* of them has an excuse for that!
