Marcel Lanquetuit (1894-1985) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before becoming the organist at the church of Saint Godard in Rouen. As well as being a prominent organist of his time, Lanquetuit was a renowned composer, but chose to improvise rather than write. A few of his notated compositions remain, however, including the grand and mighty Toccata in D Major,** published in 1927.
The toccata is typical of the French style and is dedicated to Lanquetuit's first teacher, Albert Dupré (Marcel Dupré's father). The incessant, staccato chords and memorable melody create a toccata for organ like no other, making for an essential addition to the advanced organist's repertoire.

*The recording officially endorsed by Alphonse Leduc and given on the title page of the score (omitted and erased, as deference to the late Jane Parker-Smith) refers to David Michael Patrick's interpretation on the organ of Blackburn Cathedral; it is available on Priory Records (PRCD 731) or digitally listenable here:
    • Toccata in D major
**At around 1:35, Jane Parker-Smith makes a departure from the score. Multiple recordings thus follow suit. Her playing was deliberately chosen for presentation due to, in my opinion, succinctly executing the 'Allegro moderato' tempo.

The loss of Jane Parker Smith was unbelievably tragic. I was in Paris with a close friend of hers when I learned about it, and we were all devastated.

One of the best renditions of Lanquetuit's Toccata I have ever heard. Especially the Contrebombarde 32' in the pedal sounds really like a Bombarde on a Cavaillé-Col-organ. Fantastic !

As a trained organist, I just look at this score and sigh. Certainly doable, but all those open intervals in the right hand must be a nightmare to learn. I’ve learned the Vierne, and that’s bad enough!

This is easier to learn than the works of Dupre or Vierne.
Just simply go slowly and learn each measure...then after a few sequences it will "click" and you are playing with ease.also, always remember to warm up on a piano playing the scales in the keys of the piece you are going to perform.
      Good luck!

I was thinking the left hand is going to be exhausted - but I agree about the right hand too. This reminds me of Vierne's Final from (blanking on which) symphony.

Much easier than the Vierne Toccata imo. Give it a go!

This looks quite doable…with the score shown it looks to be accessible for an intermediate-advanced pianist transitioning to organ.

Toccattas are always a great first thing to look at for pianists moving to the organ. Often just alot of hand work with little pedaling.

This looks a b to play! Especially for a pianist like me. Lol. Sounds cool though. 😃

    Play this at 1.25 speed.
    Countermelodies are brought out more.
Diane Bish plays it that fast.

But Ms. Parker-Smith Plays a different( better) instrument.

Diane bish is a dreadful example of control and overall a messy performer however much a spectacle she wishes to bring. SJP was on Gillian Wier's level... Completely different disciplines

    Just another Widor emulator

“Just another” sounds like there are dozens out there. How about Bach being a Buxtehude emulator or, even worse, a transcriber of Vivaldi’s works?

The texture and harmonic strategy are actually quite different from those of Widor.

Certainly a French Style Toccata with a strong tune in the Pedal (sometimes in the manuals too) and a good countermelody. This is certainly not mere imitation.
