As loud as I can play this in my home, I'm sure it could not compare to being there in person. Cheers my good man!
The neigbours will appreciate you hearing it live instead in your own house with volume on max I guess...
😁😁😁😁
You'll never get the bass in a domestic setting, a huge stone built space is required.
MAN OH MAN!!!! Felix, I am sure you realize that you are one of the luckiest musicians in the world to be able to perform the way you do! I played this performance three times in one hour and gave you a standing ovation each time from my sound room. Thanks so much for sharing the joy that your talent brings to all. APPLAUSE APPLAUSE APPLAUSE!!!
I never really liked this piece, cause it shifts between minor and major. But Orochimaru’s theme, a character from the Anime Naruto, who’s theme is based on this piece, love that theme so much.
His articulation is so weird, it's disturbing.
Lol alter
I have watched endless versions of this masterpiece and, for me, this one is in a league of its own. This one reduced me to tears. Felix you have an amazing talent. Also, loved the photography, especially the picture in picture of the footwork. Thank you hardly seems adequate.
Wow, thank you!
Total masterpiece played by a master!!!!!!!! Incredibly powerful!!!
What a sound! Brilliant! I am so glad they’re restoring this piece of history to its full glory!
Yes, keeping my fingers crossed that momentum (read: funding) keeps going!
Fantastic performance. And kudos to whomever the audio engineer was who captured it so well.

The creativity of Bach is incredible on this instrument.
If indeed it is by Bach. No original manuscript in Bach's handwriting survives. There are some eminent musicologists who think that it is not from his hand because it contains too many features inconsistent with Bach's style. I agree that Bach was a supreme genius and that this is a remarkable piece, regardless of who wrote it.
Yes i agree with you. This music may the body on high frequence !
Fantastic - just had to stop what I was doing and let myself be enveloped by the music.
Nobody should pass through life without hearing this at least once.
You can be trapped for one thousand years with this magnificent pipe organ and NEVER run out of organ music to play. This BEAST has SEVEN KEYBOARDS!!! LOOK AT ALL OF THOSE STOPS!!!! PIPE ORGAN PARADISE BABY!!!
eight (pedal are also keyboard)
It also has second touch on the Great, the choir, and pedal.@@frankweiser3895
11? The bottom two keyboards and the pedals all have second touch
Fantastic performance! This is my all-time favorite musical instrument. I played this same piece, just for fun, on the pipe organ at the cathedral adjoining the Catholic school I attended. From the age of 13 on, Sister Anna Rose Bezner (music teacher and principal of the school) showed me how to play the console organ near the altar and also the massive cathedral pipe organ. I became the principal organist at Holy Family Cathedral in Tulsa while attending school for four years at Bishop Kelley High School. The power, the echo, the vibration, and the magic and majesty of a large pipe organ overtakes your body, mind, and soul. Those were exciting moments I shall never forget.
You had a great past. I have played on a number of organs overseas and in Toronto, Canada. Some of them imbue the player with a power that is hard to communicate to non-players. I had my share of this fun and I am so grateful for it.
What a great legacy you have.. to have done that at a young age! Fabulous!❤
The sad thing is this recording is nothing like the actual sound that was played. That is impossible to properly record. Even more so with the base notes, notes that you feel instead of hear.
Use an earphone, u can feel the pedal vibration in your ears
So true! What an experience in person!
No mid roll ads either 🤬
Yes
One of the most beautiful organ pieces
Wow. The accuracy, it simply doesn;t get much better than that.
Dear Mr Hell, with a surname like that you certainly added a diabolical touch to Bach's music. Well played, sir!
Considering that this organist is German, his surname actually means "bright" (v. dim).

His playing is certainly Bright.
This is a phenomenal instrument, as well as the music, I've never seen an instrument so beautiful in all my life, I would imagine that it would be very expencive to buy with all the keyboards and most probably priceless as in how expencive it would be, jean michel jarr, would have a field day with this baby, absolutely gorgeous instrument,. and playing Toccata/ fugue.
Brilliant performance, fab sound, and excellent camera work.
A real treat.
Mega thanks to everyone involved!
My mother and i spend years singing in various choirs and cathedrals. And hearing a pipe organ opened up fully sends goosebumps up and down you arms for sure. Especially, with the right reverb it's indescribable. I thought this piece was played a bit to fast. Should have been slowed down a bit. Many organists play just to play and hear themselves. But one must play this instrument and listen to what it wants to do. And only then will you hear the perfect sound.
As Bach would say, let's see if it has good lungs. This one has great lungs!
OMG!!! Great performance! Maestro Hell and the Boardwalk Hall Organ...what a match!
IT IS JUST SUCH A PITY that it took a British enthusiast to get the support and restoration out of the starting blocks. Let’s hope this instrument is treasured for many decades to come and never forget the name Stephen D. Smith.

Wunderschön gespielt....hätte ich gern live gehört...
Splendidly played this famous piece. You have great virtuosity to express the intensity of this monumental composition. Thank you for this treasure!
Many thanks!
Welche Freude verströmt die Kunstvolle Klangfülle😊 Danke
Absolutely epic performance. Very well filmed and recorded. Thanks so much!
Wow! I think that's the best tocatta that I've ever heard! Bravo!
Bravo Felix Hell:
You were sitting at the console in 2000 when most of the organ didn't work and today you are sitting at the console an playing it when most of the organ does work. What a magnificent performance. Thank you Felix Hell.
What an incredible... insight upon a memory. >? Blessings.
I remember that too! There was a picture on the old ACCHOS website showing a young Felix Hell at the console, with the sad caption that the organ could not be played at the time. How wonderful to hear him playing it and sounding so amazing all these years later.
Thank you Ethan for your comments and observations. Many people do not know that saving this organ from destruction was a very close call. In 1998-1999, when the Convention Hall was slated for a large building refurbishment it was decided to remove the organ. Most of it did not work at that time. The original Atlantic City Convention Hall Organ Society members ( including myself, Harry Bellangy and the late Charles Swisher) worked tirelessly to thwart those that wanted to remove the organ. We were successfully able to have the organ registered as a Historical Monument, out of reach to those that wished to have it destroyed.
When ACCHOS disbanded and HORC took over, things began to quickly move in a very positive manner. Rather than the removal of the organ, today we have the world's largest organ more than 50% refurbished. I understand that today that at least 18,000 pipes are playable. The sound is magnificent. KUDO's to HORC.
@@tubamaxima187 I didn’t realize it was that close to removal. I first discovered this organ online right about the time of the remodeling of the auditorium, and I downloaded the amazing recording of BWV 565 that was made just before they pulled the plug. I was furious to hear how the workers took no care during the remodeling, damaging the pipes, sawing through the the cables and windlines. I was delighted when I heard it was registered as a historical monument and that something like a million dollars had been given toward its restoration. Then when a video showed up on TH-cam of a very out of tune, cyphering organ being played by the children of the caretaker as I recall, I finally had reason to hope! I’ve never been there to see it yet, but I hope to some day. Thank you for your tireless efforts to save this wonderful instrument!
My wife and I were recently walking the AC boardwalk (a fun pastime for us) and unfortunately, I was an hour late for the tour of the ACCH! This is an amazing treasure that I'm eagerly awaiting full restoration, and the history nut in me would LOVE to see it being played in person! Glorious piece, btw!
Well done!! Great performance and sound!
TOP HONOR JUST To Be ABLE To SIT AT This Magnificent Instrument. And Of Course Hearing & Watching & Being A Huge Fan & Follower Of Mr Felix Hell On Such A Journey To Seeing How Young He Was Performing To Now! Absolutely Amazing. BRAVO! Felix! BRAVO!
So appreciate your comment. Thank you 🙏
Bach was Devine, it’s player’s whom might perform onto this piece of art, must be his angels, thank you mr.Felix Hell for sharing this beautiful video with me 🙏👏👏❤️🇳🇱

BRAVO and many thanks for sharing with the world.
As a young kid I had the pleasure of listening to this organ in AC
BRAVO
I recently came across another recording of this piece on this instrument recorded on a phone so the sound wasn't great but still very impressive. This, however, is absolutely jaw-dropping. I was breathless with tears in my eyes by the end. If you ever play Widor's Toccata in F I may not survive the experience!
There is a recording of that on this organ on TH-cam.
@@0GreatMerlinI'll be looking for it. I just hope the tempo isn't a full gallop as Mr Hell has done here. I love being carried off an auditory whirlwind as much as the next organ groupie, but as I age I'm becoming a fan of slowing these pieces down a bit, so the audience can breathe, and appreciate more of the notes.

So flight of the Bumble Bee is out?
I do so love that piece when it is played on a tuba. Spike Jones had that on one of his records. Just so soft and sweet.🤣
So beautiful. I lost my organ in our house fire. I miss it. My keyboard just isn't the same. Thank you, dear Sir.
Sorry to hear about your your instrument Eileen. 😔 Glad to hear you enjoyed my music. 🙏
I am tremendously sorry that your organ was lost in the house fire. Years ago, our house burned, and I lost my piano in the fire, which had felt like my dearest friend for years. It's not the same as losing an organ, but I was heartbroken. I'm now an organist as well as a pianist, so I feel deeply for your loss. I send best wishes to you from California as you recover from this fire.
Always impressive, always moving, always inspiring!
Bravo Maestro! Easily one of the best renditions I've ever heard. Thank you so much for sharing this. It's a pleasure listening to you play. Fantastic job. Thanks again.
Thank you kindly!
Thanks for the listen. I M adding it to my organ favs
Brilliantly played! 💪🏻
Approaching that instrument/beast would make me dizzy. This master we've just heard is incredibly gifted.
I would absolutely love to hear this live. Love your performance!! Thanks for posting!!
Thanks for listening 😊🙏
Could only imagine the feeling of power one man can project to the audience in pure music
I saw the thumbnail & thought of this piece of music, & wondered whether it would be played. Clicking on & hearing it open made my year 😂
It's impressive you play that fugue so fast!! This organ has such a massive sound!
Absolutely stunning!!!
The best recording I've ever heard!
Nothing short of fabulous! Loved this😊
This is why every composer since Bach has bowed to his supremacy. This music is beyond amazing.
Incredible !!!! Brilliant !!!! BRAVO 🎉
Absolutely fantastic. Congratulations on this performance Felix - I am thrilled to see this instrument just get better and better, and you really make it sparkle here. Bravo!!
Thanks so much!
You are the BEST organist in the world
Thank you 🙏
THE KING OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS! 😲😲
imagine hearing this in the early 1700's, on an organ the size of several buildings, when the only experience with music you'd had so far is some person playing a lyre
Much better than the other performance I heard of this composition on the same organ -- this one really sounds done right. Surprisingly agile and clean sound for an organ this enormous, or even for a merely large organ -- large modern organs often muddy the sound of Bach's work.
Agreed. I refrained from commenting as such on the other TH-cam channel where that performance was shown, but this performance has the space, clarity and poise that such a vast space requires. The other one was rushed and jerky and sounded muddy and indistinct as a result. I still wish we could hear more of the organ repertorie, particularly romantic music that fits the era of this organ. Bach is really an anachronism on a huge romantic instrument. Where's the Franck, Vierne, Dupré, Messien, Langlais?
@@chrisburn7178 Put my vote in for some of that.
@@chrisburn7178Reger.
@@chrisburn7178 The clarity of the performance means he knew just what stops to put on, and no more than those, to get transparent tone.
Bravo Maestro. Amazing performance on a superb organ. Thank you.
Absolutely wonderful to hear you play on the Atlantic City organ Felix. I well remember enjoying your two visits to play at Melbourne Town Hall and meeting you and your parents over dinner. One concert was for secondary school children however we bought members of our younger aged choir who were totally captivated by your playing. Six months later at one of their concerts I played the David German Trumpet Tune and they were saying "Felix Hell played that!" I have in front of me the CD recorded on 26th May 2002. Congratulations and every good wish.
Thanks so much for your comment. I miss Melbourne and its marvelous Town Hall Organ. One of my favorite instruments in the world.
Perfect! My favourite performance of this masterpiece!))
What an instrument! It has 7 swell (expression) pedals, and 7 manuals. But I know that Felix does not need a monster organ to sound wonderful. Did you just play this whole thing with out notes?! I'm blown away! I can see that you have done this before. Not everybody is willing to put in the time to get this good. Keep up the great work!
As often mentioned in these threads notes (sheet music, right?) can be a distraction to an organist. Ten days ago at Lincoln Center I saw Cameron Carpenter play an incredibly complex program well over two hours long on the prodigious new electronic organ all without sheet music. That was one busy human - maybe the world's busiest.
I’m not going to lie, I’m to lazy to put in the work to get half this good
@@dirtfarmer7472 Haha! I think it takes even Cameron Carpenter a week to recover. His TH-cams dont quite convey how athletic his performances are.
@@peterquennellnyc
At least I’m trying to be honest
@@peterquennellnycI saw him perform the Poulenc concerto in Melbourne on the Town Hall organ, and it was as you describe: he pulsed and vibrated and jumped when the organ did. What an organist!
Simply amazing!
Magnificent! We've all heard this T&F hundreds of times but for me this is the most exciting one ever! Bravo!
Thank you so much!
Very nice interpretation! I love hearing more recordings of T&F on the midmer losh organ
Glad you like it 🙏
OMG!!! Perhaps the best performance of Bach's Toccata & Fugue I've ever listened to.
Thank you 😊
Absolutely amazing!
Absolutely fantastic interpretation of this iconic work. Bravo Mr. Hell. I have listened to dozens and this is now my favorite. I have worked hard to learn this great piece and your performance inspires me to continue with more intensity. Thank you.
Thanks for your kind words 🙏

Awesome 🤩 Beautiful organ music!
An incredible instrument, an amazing composition and a talented musician. It's a wonderful combination. Thanks
Wonderful!

Yes, would love to hear it IRL, but this is next-best! Thank you for the performance and for posting! Greetings from Canada (and a Boardwalk supporter)!

Wonder performance and beautiful sound, I love organ music.
We didn't have much but we always had a large theater organ we even had a pipe organ at for a time.....My dad played magnificently....and that was the piece I remember most....Thank you, thank you for the memory....
Thanks for sharing your experience ☺️🙏 glad this is meaningful to you.
Pure pleasure.
Totally awsome
Best performance i've ever seen.
I can't grasp why your performance does not have exponentially more views.
You brought me to tears. "Fantastic" can't give this piece enough credit. Some parts were embellished with a few curly cues, which underlined the original even more.
I am a big fan. Hoping to listen to any of your live performances in the future.
Any attempt at a description would be a profound understatement. Besides spectacular musicianship, trying to imagine actually building this instrument!
The largest instrument and the finest piece of music ever written
BRILLIANT Performance ,Sir! Such pure, unbridled, RAW POWER !
wonderful!
So cool to see this for the first time today, So close to Bach's birthday; March 31...I never knew about this organ in AC...Thanks for the upload...I was in Ocean City nj today only 10 miles from AC...I hope to see it...
awsome preformance.
Thanks 😊
Wow! But what a masterful interpretation!
Big fan of the church organ, I subscribe right away. :)
The memory and skill of the organist finding his way around the various keyboards and peddles. Yes we cannot on a video feel the tones and strengths of the notes but we can wonder in amazement of the skills of the person playing the instrument and hope that one day we can experience in real life.
Bravo Felix! ❤
