- If you've followed The Hula Girls for a while, then you've probably seen my posts about working for Los Angeles punk rock legends, X. The last 20 years, I've acted as their main graphic designer, designing logos, merch, posters, and shooting live concerts... but I've barely had any interaction with their guitar player (who happens to be one of my absolute guitar heroes) Billy Zoom. I'm proud to announced that tonight on Spike's Breezeway Cocktail Hour, I'm joined by the legendary Billy Zoom for part one of creating the Luau's Jet Pilot!
To make the JET PILOT:

1/2oz fresh lime juice
1/2oz fresh grapefruit juice
1/2oz cinnamon syrup
1/2oz falernum
1oz dark Jamaican rum
3/4oz gold Puerto Rican rum
3/4oz 151 Demerara rum
1 dash Angostura bitters
6 drops of Pernod
4oz of crushed ice
--------------------------------------
Mix ingredients in a tin. Flash blend for five seconds.
Pour into a vintage atomic themed double old-fashioned glass.

Even though I know nothing about billy zoom. It was great to hear the stories from the 60’s and 70’s and all the legends he has worked with. Can’t wait for part 2.

It was Bob Hanson & Annie.(Pinball Annie) Not “Candy.” (Candy was Chuck Berry’s girlfriend. She was a hula hoop champion. Mississippian as best I recall? I’m a big fan of Victor Davis Hanson who looks so much like Bob Hanson. Both from Northern California and both brilliant History teachers. I miss Bob. Miss you too, Billy. BTW, it was your waitress girlfriend who painted the leather jacket silver. You’re welcome. ;-)
Dude! Love the show! You have inspired me to build a tiki hideaway on my patio.. Spending way too much money stocking my bar for tiki drinks. If you are ever in Ventura area hit me up! I am also a car guy. Rebuilding a 64 Fairlane right now.. Cheers!

The Hula Girls it’s just your thing I bet your Mum would like to have known earlier, what will I get young Matthew for Christmas, I know a cork and bottle for hours of fun. The first time your Mum said Matthew I thought it was someone off camera.

Love Billy. Opened for X in 2002 in Houston and he was very cool. Biggest revelation was his comments on Van Halen. Who'd have thought?

Billy Zoom is criminally underrated. He's such a phenomenal ax man. Great stage presence and dry sense of humor. Had the pleasure of meeting him at Denny's down the street from my house in San Diego, the morning after their show the night before. Matter of fact, i met DJ and Exene too! The time of my life! By the way, Billy is BASED. He doesn't like Neil Young for the same reasons I don't like him.
