  • Join me as I explore the history behind the iconic "Suffering Bastard" tiki mug and the cocktail that was served in it. Learn the difference between Trader Vic's version and the gin-based libation from Egypt. Plus, special guest Deke Dickerson joins me in The Breezeway for a conversation about the music video I produced for him!
    SEE Deke's music video here:
    • "Wild Wild Thing" (Off...
    To make the SUFFERING BASTARD:
    --------------------------------------
    1oz dry gin
    1oz brandy
    1/2oz Rose's Lime Sweetened Juice
    2 dashes of Angostura bitters
    4oz Gosling's ginger beer
    --------------------------------------
Shake everything except for the ginger beer with ice. Stir in ginger beer. Pour unstrained into a Mai Tai Joe mug or a double old-fashioned glass.
Garnish with orange slice and mint sprig.

That was a awesome music video! Also if his 60 was a “show car” it wouldn’t have been driven up there and made it into the video. Keep it a driver Deke👍

Created in Shepheard's hotel in Egypt and enjoyed by Rommel... I hope it's with Trader Vic's secret ingredients... Hmmm, Cucumber! Or is it brandy and gin? Also great! Wow, I see the ingredients now. Yum!

I had no idea the suffering bastard had a Chairo backstory. Thanks for the history lesson!! Definitely need to try this recipe. Also, if you're ever on the central coast of California I highly recommend stopping at the Sort This Out Cellars tiki lounge. A rockabilly wine tasting bar that actually does a killer job on doing tiki drinks based on their wines. It sounds weird I know, but they actually nail it. Great job again as usual Spike!!!!

Rose's Lime or Pomegranate cordials are truly classic pre-war cocktail (WWII) ingredients, every bit as legendary as Angostura Bitters. To be truly authentic to the original Cairo recipe would require using either Bombay or Hendrick's gin, Schweppes Ginger Ale, and a French brandy. The classic number one refreshing drink (non-alcoholic) served everywhere across the entire 19th & 20th century colonial empire from Singapore, to India, To Cairo is the 'Lime Squash', using Rose's Lime, simple syrup, and Schweppes club soda.

Interesting. I have Hendricks but the cocktail called for a 'London Dry gin.' Does Hendricks qualify with that? And what about the ginger beer?

    • @RichArtLove
      @RichArtLove 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@BreezewayCocktailHour In Britain lighter beer is traditionally referred to as Ale, so originally (1930's40's50's) Schweppes Ginger Ale in the UK is was way stronger, and more like Ale, fermented, and made with actual ginger, but by the 60's the USA it became watered down for American tastes and made more like soda pop, so yes, there's a difference, so what you used was probably closer to the original stuff. My faux pas. Ginger beer has WAY more sugar in it, and way less carbonation than G Ale.
BTW Had to laugh at your being distracted by dripping water in your 'tropical jungle bar' - Mahalo

Lime cordial is also was used to make the original gin gimlet before people stared to swap it out for lime juice. I really like lime cordial gimlets so much I ended up making lime cordial at home.

Original Dark and Story is actually Goslings rum and Barritt's Ginger Beer. There was a falling out between the two companies at some point and goslings began making their own ginger beer. So the Barrit's is actually more authentic to the original.

In one of his books Jeff Beachbum Berry points out the Rose's Lime Cordial was much higher quality (made from real ingredients) back in the days when these drinks were first created. Today it's a cheap chemical imitation of what it once was. He recommends the El Guapo Lime Cordial which is artisinal and quite good.

Spike someone may have already commented on this but the drink you made was not Vic's, you made the original. Vic stole the name, and as you noted, his Tiki themed version had rum and a garnish of cucumber. Would love it if you make another video with Vic's recipe in the same mug used here, then it will be accurate. Recipe is somewhat challenging to track down as most will simply list Vic's Mai Tai mix as an ingredient rather than break out the real stuff.

Yeah, fucking eBay. I hear you!! I was more into regular vintage, and it was indeed a golden age of finds before eBay.
Thanks for this channel..... we love tiki, and here in Indianapolis (of all places) we have a couple cool places at least to hang: the Inferno Room and La Revolucion. Cheers!!

Yeah, I know that a lot of stuff was filmed in Malibu creek near chatsworth but then you get into permits with filming in state parks... and 'way better' than what we found? I don't know how you beat better than what we found.
