Love this mix. People complaining about the beat matching should try to mix 3 turntables. I’ve been a vinyl DJ for 20 years and 3 decks is tough. All the perfectly sterile mixes nowadays don’t appeal to me like real vinyl techno/house mixes. I like when there’s a bit of a human element, you can hear the beats fall apart slightly and get pushed back in time. Regardless, Jeff Mills is a master at his craft. Respect.
Totally agree. People that have only mixed using CDs or digital media don't appreciate the effort that goes into keeping vinyl beats in time over a long period of time. Little imperfections in the vinyl like tiny warps, scratches, nicks and stuff are capable of pushing beats out of line as is the analog nature of the turntables themselves (the motors don't keep a completely perfect speed - particularly as they get older). Add in beat-matching x3 tracks and this is an amazingly skilled performance!
Thought I knew house to a tiny tiny tiny degree, Went to Movement in 2022 and saw this man. I reconsidered everything I knew. Been on a journey ever since then to really dig deep into Jeff and the OGs. It’s hard to watch some the DJs I used to love cuz these Detroit dudes mix DIFFERENT. Absolutely love the “less clean” style of mixing, you can feel the effort and the direction they want to take things. I’m absolutely in love with the old Detroit/Chicago scene and will take advantage of the time we have left with all these masters.
At finland we often referred the raves as "ravit" which is a word for horseraces . . for multiple reasons but especially because when the DJ doesn't get the mix right, it sounds as if you're in a horse derby :D
@@toddw3nzel639 Well said, because time sadly is *Finite* Paul Johnson (Chicago, Relief, Dust Traxx, Dance Mania) was one of the early Covid deaths in 2020. Mike Huckabee (Deep Detroit Techno producer, knew Native Reaktor inside and out, taught Detroit children how to use Reaktor at a community center, & one of _The_ nicest people on this planet) died from Covid early on (2020) and caught from being in the hospital for a stroke. TTo all those who complain he is not beatmatching. First of all, Jeff is mixing for a solid 30 years now. Secondly, he is choosing tracks based on energy, style, texture and rhythm and not necessarily based on similar production, similar sound so he can layer track over track without anyone noticing. He is not Richie Hawtin and as you can see he doesn’t use processor or effects for the transitions between tracks. This is the Jeff Mills style of mixing, sometimes “quick and dirty” sometimes loud and galloping like a horse but this is techno people. Maybe it isn’t your cup of tea but this is normal. However, for me anyone saying that Jeff Mills is not a god DJ is just clueless.
no excuse for messy beats, u dont need anything but eq to mix flawlessly and seamnlessly, certainly not any effects. he's a a legendary producer, but god of djs i dont think so.
Jeez, it's like everyone commenting on the beat matching is somehow able to do it better but will never have to prove it as the keyboard is a great ego boost. On the off chance any of these people are DJs with access to 3 decks, whether they be turntables, CDJs or controllers, if they have a physical pitch adjust give this a go with a bit of paper covering the BPM on any display you may have. Basically you've got 16 bars of music maximum to get the next track beatmatched, cued up & dropped into the mix with no sync button pressing allowed. I would actually place my house on the fact you couldn't do it for hours at a time. I've owned turntables for well over 20yrs & even tried to emulate this kind of style in the mid 90s with a friend on 3 decks & we couldn't do it anywhere near as good or fast as Jeff does, & that's with one of us ensuring the mix was in time whilst the other set up the next track, so what he achieves on his own is absolutely mind blowing from a technical standpoint. Also his incredible musical knowledge is evident as he intuitively goes from brand new tracks to older stuff, knowing how it will add to the set. Please don't look at this comparing it to modern day big name DJs, this is raw, powerful techno played by a person who loves the music more than the fame & fortune he can gain from it. I'm certainly not going to argue that the latest Top 100 DJs aren't at the top of their game, no matter what my opinion of the music they play, but if you brought any of them to watch Jeff, I'd guarantee you they'd be awestruck no matter what the beat matching was like as that simply doesn't matter when you play like this.
+GAJ As much as I love Mills, he's a (godlike) producer first and a (technically) mediocre DJ second. I've seen Mills live more times than I've had hot meals, he can't mix, he's shit at it, but his music taste makes up for it. Mixing with three decks is NOT rocket science.
+GAJ You make some very compelling points. Here's another reason why most people won't play on 3 decks - it sounds shit. Especially when Jeff Mills does it.
Just YES!!!!!!! Anyone knocking his beatmatching doesn't have a fucking clue. From what I'd counted he'd already mixed 6-7 tracks in 5 minutes across three decks. Legend.
That is a pretty loose use of the word "mixed". Doing what Jeff is attempting to do here well is impressive, but doing it like Jeff actually does is not. Pretty much any average techno deejay can do at least as well. One day we'll get over the idea that someone TRYING to do a bunch of shit behind the decks is dope, even if they are doing it very poorly.
I remember hearing Carl Cox saying something along the lines of "some of the best mixes ever will have mistakes in them, but that is because the DJ is working to the absolute best of their ability to make that set the best it can possibly be". I would much rather hear that human element, hear the imperfections along with the craft and performance of a DJ working hard, than have it all pretty much done for you now with autocue and beat matching. I can't help but feel that the increased technology has actually had a negative impact on the performance - that feeling of a set being crafted by a human DJ not just a clever mixing machine.
Have you ever been to one of his club performances? Most smooth and true story telling mixes are Jeff's. He's the reason I listen to techno. Not a single DJ came to his level. I have listened to techno almost 20yrs and there are great DJs, all kinds of mixes and styles... none of them is like Jeff. Jeff is something special in electronic age. And btw, that "faulty" beatmatching isn't coincidental, trust me. I don't know about other ppl, I LIKE IT! Jeff is religion, Jeff is all.
Got to see Jeff in Barcelona (Sonar), London (Fabric + Lost), Birmingham (Atomic Jam). Amazing talent one of the best DJs in the world if not Galaxy, he is from a different world for sure. Watching him at work is like watching a 9 dart finish or a 147 in snooker.
I saw all these comments defending Mills' "beatmatching" skills and my jaw dropped. What kind of moron would think Jeff Mills needs to improve his beatmatching I wondered. I see lots of posts defending his skills but any posts knocking him seem to be gone.
***** Yeah, DJ's used to work with "tracks" and house and techno songs had an obvious intro, usually just bars of kick drum for the DJ to match and bring in. Producers were underground and wanted to be played by the DJ's, there was no hope of huge radio airplay. Now, it's all drops and crazy intro's and producers make songs they want to be hits on the radio. The DJ's I like still use songs as building blocks, the point is the mix.
***** Darren Breckles If you want to see a modern techno DJ do great things with a pair of technics and all vinyl I absolutely implore you to go check out Sunil Sharpe on the Boiler Room, one of the most invigorating sets I have heard in ages, and like Mills here he never lets his technical prowess cloud the groove. I suspect a lot of the Mills criticism is from the new wave of CD and digital DJs for whom the concept of having to struggle to nail a mix is simply a thing of the past - they hear some of the initial stages of some of the transitions here and think the odd clang is a symptom of a lack of skill, as opposed to a byproduct of someone who knows he is skilled enough to correct everything near-instantly refusing to let the fact that the odd beat might be a tiny bit off get in the way of the energy he is building. I will take hearing the human element in a dj mix over dull methodical tecnicality each and every time. (and go check that Sunil Sharpe set, it is unreal)
***** You are welcome man! I am really glad you enjoyed that mix! Its funny, I think there are still plenty of DJs keeping the flame burning, but it can be hard to find the good ones. I definitely think that a lot of the touring DJs you see would probably play vinyl if they didnt have to take a flight and deal with shitty hand luggage restrictions and the fear of their records getting lost or damaged, it takes a real trooper to still bother.with wax, but the amount of releases going around make me think it will be around for a good while yet as a format, or at least I hope so.
Jeff is from out of this world - I`ve seen him several times live. NO one.. and i mean NO ONE can even come close to him.. He`s a one of the kind. He has never been about "playing some records" that`s just means for purpose - He is up there and paints a picture - Projects a lively image on a screen - If you dont get it, you might be in the wrong theatre.........
I don't think Jeff Mills worries, or perhaps has ever worried about perfect beat matching. I think his interests are placed somewhere else. Perhaps rough mixing (if you wanted to call it that) could be considered just as important as perfect mixing.
When children decades from now research "what is a Techno DJ," this should be the first ping. Jeff's from another planet and we are fortunate to have here on Earth.
Legendary, a master at work. Since the first time I saw him at I love techno in 1995 in Gent at the vooruit I loved his style of mixing a natural born talent ❤️
01:17 Jeff Mills likes to put on techno tracks with this distinct pumping rhythm. I call it "propeller" or "running horse". As a techno producer you can build such techno rhythms by putting closed hihats, clicks or fast cutoff hihats, snares and other drum samples between the empty space of each kickdrum. Beats per minute should be around 130. Makes it rapid. Also add a distinct sound sample each fourth kickdrum to stress it and make it sound as if it's jumping.
After going trough some comments i just cannot beleive that someone can say that his beatmatching is bad srsly... Anyone here whos hating on him has no idea what the djing is. Lots of ppl cannot hear or see him because hes so next level. As you can see hes using 3 decks that doesnt show even what's bpm of the track, if he gave you to try to mix 2 tracks im sure that 90% of you wouldnt be able to do it since 90% djs nowdays are the sync heroes that are only changing track by track i saw that thousand times while Jeff is sometimes playing 3 tracks in same time that sounds so perfectly and even sync wouldnt be able to make it that good.
smokejc Praise Mills all you want. Give him respect for being a legend that helped pioneer a new dawn of harder/minimal techno and all that. I praise him for his place in techno history that way. Just don't make Millsucses for his horrible deejaying because of his name. People that aren't star struck by the big name all agree the dude is horrible behind the decks.
To all the commenters hating on his beat matching: this is what happens if you play three decks AND you don't have 2 minutes to spare to beat match. He puts on a record, cues it up, ballparks the tempo, and just gets on with it. Any correction he makes, he does so in the mix. Try it. And I don't mean just try to mix three decks; try to mix three decks AND do it as quickly as he does. Man, Tommy Flanagan played a few "wrong" notes behind Coltrane on Giant Steps, but he is still is Tommy Flanagan accompanying John Coltrane.
Someone can prove me wrong but I'd argue his beatmatching was more consistent during his radio days as "the wizard" and he'd still go about beatmatching exactly as you described. It's a mystery to me, in some mixes it's as if he's using sync but he's not if you listen closely enough. Superhuman hearing to adjust the pitch to perfect within 2 beats of starting the next mix. All that while cutting, scratching, and beat juggling too. Relentless technique and efficiency.
Yes, I tried many times. But never released one mix, just threw away all the recordings. Too many train wrecks and there's just too much going on. I always lost it halfway through.
People spend so much time in the comments arguing about beat matching and they're missing a live hardware set from Random Noise Generator just burning it down smdh.
the great thing about this video is not the non-fact that mills is playing an impressive playlist or that the beatmatching is impeccable. the amazing thing is that he is trying to make new music on the fly. i just love that :)
We need DJ's like Jeff Mills because he's creative on the decks. that's the kind of flavor and taste i look for. Also this what i want to see for all styles in the electronic genre to be played 15:44
yea its not only music but instrumental mastering still turn/tables-in your hands whole system of sound and hand/on in/row/in time/samplooprotating and rumbling
Random Noise Generator are fucking legends and doing what 2010 - Present DJ's were thinking of doing. Richie H, DubSki, yeah all you boys, you know where it at was at before you!
Esto si que es pinchar! 100% vinilo, nada de ordenadores ni cd's. Lo prefiero desde luego antes que la formas de pinchar de ahora! Ni punto de comparacion
He's not really focussing on the matching this mix, he's doing quick ping pongs between records to create a new sound. I've heard plenty live sets of him where you couldn't spot a single mistake.
@akis723 I also love Random Noise Generator in this! Not only do they look like they're enjoying themselves, but they are also making music on the fly! They only had 4 days to put the together for the dvd!
In fairness if anyone watching this has to comment about beat matching then I think you missed the whole point of what he is trying to do.. This is Incredible and then Octave 1 comes in with some groovy sexy Detroit House...
Its a great mix with lots of great mixer work and excellent music. For those mentioning the beat mixing. Well..your right, in places there are some issues and it's a shame they are near the start. If it was not being filmed I'm sure Jeff would have just started again. But there are lots of other redeeming qualities to this set. As for not being able to comment on the beat mixing, well of course people can. If something gets put on the internet with a comments section then there is room for positive and negative comments. And do we have to have better DJs only being able to comment on mixing ? no, anyone can if that's what they hear. Is it tough to mix on 3 decks, yes it's tough but then there is an acceptance that there could be issues when it's filmed live as well. But it's okay to mention it as long as it's not done in a nasty way. But we cannot live in a world where everything has to be positive and also we don't have to defend Jeff Mills, a legend. I learn to mix in 1991 and it ruined most of my favourite DJ tapes as some of them had really bad beat matching but I never noticed before. So learning to mix can make beat matching issues magnified and a lot of people won't even notice. If you can mix just ask yourself would you put this in to a club as an example of your mixing, the answer is no because you know the promotor will stop listening at the first issue. Even Jeff Mills would have started again until it was perfect. And I am sure he can do it amazing and perfect! but for this film it's still amazing and great to learn from even now.
@@toddw3nzel639 no, I’ve just been a DJ since 1991 and its one of the things that gets ruined. Soon as you learn you hear beats going out and back in again. It ruins some of your fav mixes lol unfortunately its one of those things you cannot un-hear. But its a great mix and it keeps getting better and better. I’m not knocking it, just saying something that is true. I quite like mixing when its on the edge and the beats get a bit phase-y. I guess it would have been more perfect with a better start., for me that is. You like it just how it is and good on you.
It's worth reading his recent interview on The Art of DJing to get what he is on about before commenting negatively about his djing. He is a phenomenal DJ that most DJs can't even come close to except maybe Derrick May. Jeff Mills recent interview is here: www.residentadvisor.net/features/3436
I've literally seen Jeff Mills fall asleep at the decks and continue mixing for 2 hours straight until he woke up yawned and continued for another 2 hours.

Totally agree. People that have only mixed using CDs or digital media don't appreciate the effort that goes into keeping vinyl beats in time over a long period of time. Random Noise Generation. Rocking those machines like They're fucking 1200's! Amazing!!
I know this video since 15 years and it’s always just magic to watch it :)
An endless source of inspiration
LOL
The phenomenon that is "Millscuses" never ceases to amaze. Yours is extra special.

What's with all the bitterness in any comment that praises Mills? Did you give him your number and he never called?
smokejc Praise Mills all you want.

Eu adoro esse cara....
Relentless technique and efficiency.
everyone who commented on his beatmatching....have you attempted 3 vinyl mixes?
nah they'r just ordinary autocue jedis xD
Don't think so
I've never attempted 3 deck, that is just next level ha. There was a world where sync didnt exist people forget...
Stephen D'Arcy-Smith is there any point if it sounds shit like this?
Yes, I tried many times. But never released one mix, just threw away all the recordings. Too many train wrecks and there's just too much going on. I always lost it halfway through.
Jeff is a boss.. Il est un des rare à mixé avec 3 platines 🙏
Blooming is a goal
Perfection is Mother Earth
Listening Jeff and many other
Could be so orgasmic when fingers allies minds, souls and times...
✌️😍
The one and only, jeff "The wizard" mills my fav dj
jeff mills + octave one, COULDN'T BE BETTER!
People spend so much time in the comments arguing about beat matching and they're missing a live hardware set from Random Noise Generator just burning it down smdh.
like the break at 20:40 come on
Masterpiece... In German we call it...Meisterwerk... Point.
Unbelieveble... so so good.. Legend!!!! Respect for the wizard
the great thing about this video is not the non-fact that mills is playing an impressive playlist or that the beatmatching is impeccable. the amazing thing is that he is trying to make new music on the fly. i just love that :)
@10 when he`s starting to play with two the bells is awsome
Jeff Mills got some skill. He still keep it real by use the turntable setup. You do not see that to much these days. Respect!
he uses CDJs now, haven't seen him with vinyl.. this DVD is from 2004.
We need DJ's like Jeff Mills because he's creative on the decks. that's the kind of flavor and taste i look for. Also this what i want to see for all styles in the electronic genre to be played 15:44
yea its not only music but instrumental mastering
still turn/tables-in your hands whole system of sound and hand/on in/row/in time/samplooprotating and rumbling
but that complex of machines is crayzyyyy
What song is that?
I'm sleepy that I'll listen to exhibitionist next time.
Mega! And him doin it live...talent!
Seeing Mills here in Mexico City next month. Cannot wait.
Numero uno!!!!!!
Respect to the man from the faithful the British lads of Berlin 89 -92 !
Jeff mills,,,,, tecnicamente e.molto preparato , conosco uno che può darci filo da torcere ,,,,un certo Joy kiticonti,,,,,o francesco Zappalà..
He's not really focussing on the matching this mix, he's doing quick ping pongs between records to create a new sound. I've heard plenty live sets of him where you couldn't spot a single mistake.
Track at min 32:16 marked as "unreleased" has been released later as Jeff Mills - Paradise
like a master chef
The man
We’re all guests in Jeff’s house. What a guy.
This is Incredible and then Octave 1 comes in with some groovy sexy Detroit House...
unbelievable bit of techno and mixing no other Dj is near as good as him woh
A otro nivel
magic hands! i think the number 1 on the turntables! 🔥💣
the one and only god of real minimal techno
i think he just born with this talent!
are you stupid? he worked hard & tough to master it and you just sayin - he was born with it.
Yes!
such a pleasure playing YOUR OWN tracks on vinyl... without computer, sync or making heart shapes with the hands like stupids use to do.
esto es una obra de arte
There's never a discussion of Jeff Mills without people missing the point on several levels.
Stationers seldom tell the oldest joke in their sharp repertoire for identical reason. It's about pencils.
Or is it 'sharp repartee'? :-)
Whatever the case it's deffo about pencils.
And Jeff Mills is on point. Sonic prestidigitation.
Jeff Mills der beste Techno DJ of the world😎👍👍👍
This style is very awesome
Idk man. Sounds like you were listening to a different set then most of us.
You like it just how it is and good on you.
genio Jeff Mills
Wow the transitions of the beat between Octava One and Jeff is something really cool
I like Jeff Mills. He has a kind to use the turntables and mixer, which I like. Very progressive. Cool.
jeff mills is cool, but love the vibe of the 2 lads vibing to their killer jams
Jeff mills the GOAT of edm period there will never be a another artist like Jeff mills ever again in edm again.
He's a fucking GENIUS!!!!!
Epic.
the goat
Insane!
prenons quelques leçons !! :)
One of the best simple as
It's worth reading his recent interview on The Art of DJing to get what he is on about before commenting negatively about his djing. He is a phenomenal DJ that most DJs can't even come close to except maybe Derrick May.
Jeff Mills recent interview is here:
www.residentadvisor.net/features/3436
Thank you so much! A must read for all Mills fans!
I've literally seen Jeff Mills fall asleep at the decks and continue mixing for 2 hours straight until he woke up yawned and continued for another 2 hours.
Epic!
What a legend
