I had a thought while listening to this, that i wish you were the person who taught me art formally. And yet, i feel so blessed to get to experience these lessons through these videos. Thank you so much for creating this space, for making these videos, and sharing such raw and honest truths
I'm thinking of making more technique focused tutorials for my gumroad, but I'm still thinking of different ways I could help people to actually learn painting through learning materials rather than just watching me paint. TH-cam is good for quick tutorials and I'm going to keep making them for free but the new changes google has made makes sequential content almost impossible to make (I'm lucky because gaming channels are seeing their watch sessions completely fall apart due to that) and when I consider how long it takes to edit one hour of video it just wouldn't make sense to me at this point. Another aspect is the way people use this platform. 100% of the questions in my pixel art tutorial were answered in that same video. If they were watching the video outside of the platform I'm sure they wouldn't have been so impatient with the process.
your paintings come together like a sculpture. You practically carve out the picture out of the colors you put down, and it's so interesting to watch these blobs turn to a fully realized environment
My favorite part of the painting process is when everything is chaos and undecided; when the possibilities are endless. I love just experimenting and picking colors almost at random to see what works. Then I watch an image emerge from this chaos and that is very satisfying. Once I've published the piece, I slowly start to dislike it more and more, because now I am seeing it from the other side: I only see what's wrong with it, instead of what's right. I think that indulging these feelings of shame, as you rightfully call them, makes it harder and harder to keep going, because I am too focused on the end result even while painting. Thanks so much for posting this video, I think I really needed to hear these words.
This video is a breath of fresh air and I feel I have learned more about the relationship I have with my creativity here, than in the last year of serious dedication to my art. Thank you I will never slack on my responsibilities as an artist and creator ever again.
Not being linear is so true! I started out working more linear from watching videos but learned that having a good process is much more important so you can adjust things while you go and feel more confident to go back
I’m doing a natural history illustration course atm, and it’s really opened my eyes to the fact that I need to practice better patience with my drawing process! I had to draw a landscape, and it took me over 5 hours! I hated the process and the finished result, and I think this is because I’ve grown too used to the convenience of digital art. This video couldn’t have been more perfectly timed, thanks Mikko! ❤️
5hours to me would feel like an amazing slam dunk of an illustration where everything went right and no strange detours were taken >__> (and yes after every livestream I feel like slumping on the bathroom floor amazed that all that happened in 1-2hours XD)
angrymikko 5 hours on a simple landscape that doesn’t even look anywhere near what you want it to look like is just SUPER frustrating though! I was so angry at myself for neglecting my traditional pencil skills all these years 😭 I honestly can’t believe how much you accomplish in 1-2 hour live-streams! You must feel really hyped after you finish one hahaha 😃💃🏻🕺🏼
Thank you. This is very inspiring. I'm on the verge of quitting. And it's a frequent idea. Thank you for your passion and not quitting to get this idea across. I often get ideas but gets really frustrated when my skill can't catch up. I needed this motivation. Thank you so much. You are a blessing. ☺️
many gave me the advice to finish the painting, the idea that I started. But the way you did really hit me ^^ yeah I should totally respect my creativity Thank you for this
Omg THANK YOU for your take on formulaic work, as someone new to painting and Procreate, I have always drawn for myself randomly and found that process relaxing. Now im learning new techniques and have spent a few hours watching these formulaic videos... I will no longer, and start more so looking for pure inspiration from others.
That’s awesome to hear. Sorry about the audio. Back when I made this video I didn’t know how to adjust for headroom on the microphone yet. Newer ones shouldn’t have this problem ☝️
You have reinvigorated my passion to paint again. I always thought landscape/concept art work would be boring and not worth learning (I come from mostly portraits. After watching just one of your beautiful live drawings I was hooked. Every time I get mentally blocked I watch one of you vids and become inspired thank you for your work. I would love to take one of your classes
Use references whenever you need them to get your message across but never let them to take over what you want to say. Find what your artwork is about and then make that a priority. References and 3d models are just scaffolding for the building you’re making. They’re not the house.
I used to have this problem. I only used references and drawing from something formed by my imagination seemed impossible. The way I solved this, is I slowly let go of the references. Little by little I used less references.what I mean is, I still used the reference but I gave it something that I came up with. Once I was confident in my abilities and in my imagination. Now I still use references for scaffolding if the artwork is complicated but I am much more confident my imagination now. Hope this helps you out! 😁🌸
You should write a book about this or make this a series. You see so much about mindset in daily life, work, sports but never about art. And art is so important. I love your perspectives!
I absolutely loving this way of looking at art. Like getting an idea means you have an obligation to the universe to make it real. I am definitely gonna keep this in mind and write it down somewhere where I’ll definitely see it because I’ve given up on too many good ideas already. Feeling very motivated atm to go back to finish some old projects I gave up on. Thank you!
I'm only 9 min in and I love your way of thinking! Refreshing perspective- I've never thought about it that way before. I'm probably the worst offender of losing my patience over a painting. Thank you for this!
Thank you so much for mentioning that step thing. Some artists only show the pretty side of their art process but not how the ugly phase takes the most time. It gives me the wrong idea that my painting has to be perfect from the beginning which is impossible and leads to frustration
Step by step tutorials is just stupid. There is no steps, but there's a proccess for each person and people find that jard to put in words so they just use that methods. I suggest that they just don't do it tbh, it's not as helpful as they hopes it would be, it confuses people who genuinely want to learn.
Another fantastic video, Mikko. Such a fantastic speaker. Your knowledge shines through. The only person I can watch where I don’t want to lob my iPad or trash my paints. I just know I’ll get my painting back when I watch these videos of yours. Thank you.
I've watched so many artists and you are the first one who gave me this kind of advice I truly took to myself and I know now what I was doing wrong, Thank you so much!!! I'm so happy I found your channel
I have been watching your videos since i got an iPad and I love love loveeeee your energy and way of explaining. Hope I will get much better with procreate soon thanks to you. Big love n hugs from Istanbul!!!
I just binge-watched your videos, now I have new stuff to watch :D I admire your style (sometimes I feel like I'm not sensitive enough to truly understand your paintings, but sometimes they really resonate) and in just a few months I'm gonna have enough money for an iPad, I'm already looking forward to put the things that you teach us into practise.
Wow! I love that your paintings are all in another world that is how I see them anyway. That's the best thing about art is that you can live in any world you like and your paintings are by far the best expression of that idea.
That makes me really happy to hear. If you ever feel like trying I don’t recommend starting with something this complex. Wouldn’t want you to be burned out right in the beginning :)
I just recently started procreate and it’s been frustrating moving from paper drawing to digital drawing but watching and listening to you has given me hope that I can do anything if I put my mind to it
Same! The thing I struggle with the most in making the switch to digital is I find I have no qualms abandoning a piece bc all that was invested was my time. Good luck!
Your way of painting is strange & special .. I’ve never seen it before .. I wish to know it more like how you do it !! Do u do courses so I can learn from u
Now that I have time (no job) and a Gumroad page I’m thinking of doing more technique specific practical tutorials that can be as long as the topic requires without having to think about yt algorithm and retention stuff. If there’s something specific you’d like me to cover in those let me know. Though I hope people understand I can’t cram everything into one thing. Anyway that’s something that is coming but it’s going to be a lot of work so I can’t commit to any specific date yet. There’s also a possibility that I’ll start a Patreon page instead if I can figure out the details, but at least one of those things will happen because I want to keep this channel alive.
angrymikko yup a Patreon page will be a good start 😍 ... and I would like you to cover how you choose your colors and then shape them in a way to be recognized as a thing you know what I mean 😅.
It’s complicated here in Finland but I’ve been in contact with the tax office staff for the past two weeks to see how the details would work. It’ll still take at least 3 weeks before they _might_ get back to me.
I think you touched on some very good points......esp that a piece is constantly evolving as you work through it & that details are not as important as structure, lighting & a good read. You have a good way of getting information across & your work is really beautiful.
is watching illustrations like this one get made that inspire me immensely! both in just life in general but mostly in continuing with my art myself! (the talk is a huge add on to that!)
Mikko, your words changed my life. I have been stuck for a few years with my writing. I love art, so I do that... a lot. But I have stories that belong to me. I have spent hours working on them. But then I gave up (for whatever reason) and just put them back on the shelf. I have never heard anyone describe the shame of aborting an idea. I know the ideas and know they are great. I know the universe gave them to me. They are my responsibility. But I have allowed my anger at the world to stop their birth. I did not choose to be the parent, but here I am. And you made me see why I am in so much inner pain because I am denying the natural creative process to happen. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I’d like to say “you had me at Brain Trash”, and I sub’d! I also relate to your method of work, I enjoy painting this way because for me, it’s more freestyle, creative, and fun. The details just come through the process of not being stiff and bored because you enjoy building the painting freely. IDK if that makes sense, but you Sir, are on point! I truly loved listening to your commentary and really liked how the video was shot. Thank you, I’d like to book a reservation on your habitat in the sky!
I struggle a lot with developing those ideas that I have. I always find myself stuck on how to approach or how the heck I'm going to draw this. And it's frustrating and depressing, but I'm fighting against all this, keep practicing everyday and show the world my mind, my heart on the form of art, that I love and I want to become better everyday...
