I still have the collection on my old tablet,I really love backgrounds, especially the artstyle in gravity falls xd
“An environment is a character.” This is exactly what my professors taught us in school! And also it’s good to remember, just as you pointed out, the environment is a character who compliments the main character (if the environment isn’t the main character itself)
Omg thank you so much for this. I may find backgrounds a lot of work too, but it definitely a great, especially when it comes to storytelling. Not to just replace the blank canvas behind the characters we draw, but to show a story within a story. Give the audience some snippets like clues that could help them put together a story that creators are telling. Love the effort you both put in the video👍. Been drawing BG's for years, since its part of being a layout artist in an animation studio. Still, I've learned new things today from this video: "...old villages are organic places that form over time". And... "BG are characters. They may not have speaking roles, but the feelings they convey are clear".
Thinking of backgrounds as characters was mind-blowing for me. You have revolutionized how I approach backgrounds, and I'm actually inspired to do a bunch of practice with them. Thank you!!

Oh hey!! That's me! @13:59 Wanna know my secret? I use the Sims 4 to map out rooms LOL. Trust me, you still have to know how to draw props in the correct perspective, color theory and correct lighting, as well as how you want to show your character's personality through their environments, so this definitely wasn't a shortcut/cheat and more of a tool to help me figure out how I wanted the base concept to look before I went into the actual drawing stage. You have to know the rules before you can break em, and I still have a lot to learn about backgrounds! Thank you Brent and Max for such a cool and informative video! I know I learned a lot and will most likely be redrawing this background in the future with this new knowledge in mind! :>
veryyy interesting, thx for sharing that but a question, wdym map out? like you put furniture where you want and adjust the size of the room then use it as a reference right? if thats the case thats very clever
@@marcypotato6435 Yeah! So when I first started designing rooms for my characters, I drew them out on paper from a top-down perspective (like you would see for room layouts for apartments), but I had a lot of trouble figuring out the heights of those objects, so I rebuilt the rooms in Sims 4 (at that point I just created the entire house lol) and then I was able to have a better understanding of the dimensions of objects in the room! I also added things like posters, a sound system, clothes and toys, etc., to really make it look lived in. I could probably make a video about it tbh 😅
You guys have the best background tutorial videos ever! Very easy to understand, fun to watch, and informative. I always coming back to the perspective grid video and Im sure I'll be coming back to this one millions of times!
Oh. My. GOSH! I am so happy I got to watch this so early! And what’s even crazier is that I actually needed some help with backgrounds. Thank you so much!
One of the best animation/art channels on youtube. thanks for this, the background aesthetic is more important than the character design imo. although both are critical to get right.
Ah man... you guys are amazing. I've been looking this info for years... I mean, is like you took like 20 other videos and tutorials, and made a milkshake with it, concentrated juice of background designing. This is generally the easy way in to get into the animation business if you are a beginner, but is not an easy job... thanks for these tools, as always.
Perfect timing!! I do a print every month and am focusing on big location-focused lore for the last four of the year. Backgrounds and atmosphere will be a huge focus so I appreciate the tips!
This is excellent. I have tried for years to look for a background painting class for 2D Animation. There is only basically one teacher out there that has a long waiting list. All of the other programs that teach background painting, you have to sign up for an entire four year program at art center of Pasadena. This is why so few people are actually painting backgrounds. There’s just not enough courses That teach this in great detail.
I've watched lots of BG tips but you guys made it much easier to understand to a person like me who struggle a lot when it comes to BG designs. It really is hard for me to include BG and understand the values to everything when you're a character design artist. It's just a lot to take in. So, I'm just glad that I found this channel. Thanks guys. I wish you more subcribers and stuff. 😁👍

Wanna know my secret?
veryyy interesting, thx for sharing that
but a question, wdym map out? like you put furniture where you want and adjust the size of the room then use it as a reference right?
if thats the case thats very clever
@@marcypotato6435 Yeah! So when I first started designing rooms for my characters, I drew them out on paper from a top-down perspective (like you would see for room layouts for apartments), but I had a lot of trouble figuring out the heights of those objects, so I rebuilt the rooms in Sims 4 (at that point I just created the entire house lol) and then I was able to have a better understanding of the dimensions of objects in the room! I also added things like posters, a sound system, clothes and toys, etc., to really make it look lived in. I could probably make a video about it tbh 😅
@@erindrawsstuff ahh i see, very neat
and if you think a video would be fun, why not
This might be the most valuable video I've watched all year
Oh my god you guys are back! Can’t wait to see what’s to come.
You guys have the best background tutorial videos ever! Very easy to understand, fun to watch, and informative. I always coming back to the perspective grid video and Im sure I'll be coming back to this one millions of times!
I'm so happy you guys are back!
Oh. My. GOSH! I am so happy I got to watch this so early! And what’s even crazier is that I actually needed some help with backgrounds. Thank you so much!
We read minds 😳 we are in your head.
One of the best animation/art channels on youtube. thanks for this, the background aesthetic is more important than the character design imo. although both are critical to get right.
YAAAAAAY you're back! Love you guys :D
Ah man... you guys are amazing.
I didn't expect this comeback but im so glad I waited! this video is great!!!
Again, one of the best channels on this entire platform!!! Insanely good ❤️❤️❤️
omg you're alive! glad to see you guys back! :D
So glad you guys are back
I'm so glad you guys are back!
Holy crab after 9 month you guy are back and exactly the topic i looking for
Can't watch this yet but I just want to comment to say THANK YOU for making a video about backgrounds!!! It's always exciting when they get their day in the sun :)
If You don't find motivation for making these videos, Just remember one thing in mind that someone in south asia everyday visits your channel to watch both of you guys.
Wow!! Super cool to appear on an episode, thanks a bunch for giving my character an amazing background! Looking forward to the next episode :D
Awesome to have you in the episode!
Sensational video, in my humble opinion I consider the background as important as the character in the scene itself. Because it is about showing the whole environment in which the whole story takes place. Just like if you remember your favorite spot.
