My family is from Kadoka, SD and there is a mural of my cousin Shane in downtown done in his memory! A special young man!
I used it be stationed in Montana in the Air Force used to work on them brings back memories.
I spent 4 days in Rapid City last September....wish it was 2 weeks though. There is SO many places to visit and cool hiking trails to hit.
I was on my way to Badlands NP and discovered the minuteman missile site. Too bad it was closed. Also I learned you need to make a reservation for the tour and it was sold out for over a month. Too bad. I would’ve loved to see the missile silo. Reminds me of the movie “ War Games”.

I'm supposed to be in SD with all of you, obviously i am not. The bus i wanted to buy fell through (i offered 3K over asking, sight unseen, he just needed to get it temp tagged and deliver it to me - i'm over 2 hours away. He said NO. I had $500 in hand to give him to hold it. Still no.....musta been something wrong with it or he was not a good businessman)
Ah well, the search continues...i know the rig is out there....she will come to me when it is right, just gotta be patient.....

More than a few years ago got to go in a real active maned silo outside Rapid City SD fo work.
Wow Russ. Thank you for the trip today. Took me away from my writing just for a little vacating...isn't that missile something. Yes some of these things that we had to live through in our time and still are seem to be mind boggling considering we are all huma n beings. Russ so many things seem mind boggling to me with all the hate. I just will never understand I guess. Our poor mothers and their offspring. Bless you Russ for being a good person and doing pure kindness by sharing your trips with everyone. Keep on trucking Russ as I love to take break and go down the highways and byways and dream of travel. South Dakota is such an open area, and makes you feel so tiny and the world so vast. I cannot seem to get enough of learning about our two beautiful countries of Canada and the USA. And I did not know that South Dakota had rattlesnakes. Did you know we camped there without that knowledge. S.D. reminds me of Manitoba Saskatchewan and all Prairie land. Absolutely beauty in their own distinct ways....once again you keep me holding my sanity these days. Thank you thanknyou thankyou...indeed. a travel bug Carolyn Frm Canada...speak later.
The rust on the walls of the visitor center is deliberate. It's a special kind of steel made just for this purpose. It 'paints itself' with a thin coat of rust, so you never have to paint it or clean it or anything.
My dad worked on the security system for the Minuteman missile back in the 60s. It was designed to detect a man but not a dog or a horse or a bison wandering onto the property. Not sure how they did that.

We were stationed in Mt. Home Idaho 63-65 dad was a missile system analyst he never talked about it
I knew a AF officer back in the day.He was in this type of work.He said that during the Cuban crisis the things were kept operational with baleing wire and bubble gum.I figure he made a close assessment.
Visitor center had a film on what the neighbors felt about growing up next to such power. It was interesting. Thanks for stopping.
I was Air Force Security Police, 1987 - 1991. I gaurded them at Minot Air Force Base North Dakota. 857th MSS, TF-7. It was all Top Secret back then.
My brother was SP stationed at Minot 68-71.
part of that missile field is still active. in the mid 1970's i was driving highway 2 there was an airman on the road side with a M16. looked over by the missile site there was a semi in the ditch with a missile on the trailer my thoughts were the driver who put that in the ditch is not the driver any longer.
i also toured the launch control site near Cooperstown ND. the blast door was impressive.
And I remember camper teams babysitting my LFs whenever the IZ or OZ wouldn’t clear. Notifying the CAT to back off 1000 yards upwind when running the missile launch checklist was a courtesy if you remembered and had time to do it but it was not required. The emphasis was on making our keyturns before incoming took us out. (MMII/CDB Missile Combat Crew Commander, 321st SMW, GFAFB, ND.)
Remember all this from school and on the news at that time in my life I remembered scary stuff then thank you

Stop at the Montrose exit see our fantastic iron sculptures of a. Long horn steer and a horse and other iron sculptures.Its listed with the Smithsonian institute. Its between I 90 and hwy 38 about 35 miles west of Sioux Falls.

11:35 - i was raised in a "one road town"..to get to anyhting (until i was about 16) - you HAD to get on an interstate. I have driven them to go to work for years, sometimes switching from one to another..it's BORING. Even worse are toll roads.
I prefer quiet back roads, and neat stuff like you. I do have an idea or two on this, but i'll keep mum until i can develop it fully.

I got to go down in one, in high school in ROTC.
My father inlaw was in the Air Force and sometimes worked on the missle sites, years ago when they were active, good video , travel safe.

And just think, all that was maintained by UASF personnel with only a high school education when they enlisted. It took several months to a year of training before you could work on them.

Yo Russ, You are bringing South Dakota to life I had no idea so many Kool places in that state. I want to be a park ranger at a missile silo site I want to be a park ranger at a missile silo site.
I worked the D-09 LF when I was a Combat Targeting Team Chief back during the Cold War. FYI, the 44 MW was deactivated and all but one LF and LCF were destroyed. An LCC typically controls one flight of 10 missiles.
I took a tour a few years ago and looks like they added a lot to the site. This doesn't look like what I saw. I went into one big underground silo and saw the missile. I was by myself with a tour guide.

What I want to know is what happened to all the dirt that they dug out of the ground to build this Silo where's the dirt in the ground looks level around it or maybe it's just deceiving

It would be really nice for those that will never see these sites in person to slow down the camera and focus on all the signage for just a couple of seconds so the viewer could pause and read the interesting facts you gloss over, why are you in such a hurry to blow through these places ? The last 3 videos have been a real disservice to the sites you visited and the viewers.
