I remember this one! You should also check out “Lucky” from this album. It’s a really unsettling mix of manic optimism and omnipresent dread.
I sometimes disagree with Ryan and George. I’m going to duffer but respect honesty. This song is genius. Pure pure genius. They both did not like Johnny Greenwoods guitar solo before and after the “rain down” part. If you look at lists of the best guitar solo lists these two solos always make the top 100 guitar solos in history and sometimes are close to top 10. Johnny Greenwood killed it he made the guitar sound like a digital computer and pulled it off. Tho George acknowledged the genius of the song. Well I am still thinking Lost in Vegas are the goats because of their honesty.

Great review. Would love to see Ryan in floods of tears reviewing 'Fake Plastic Trees'. In your own time, you might consider their album 'The Bends', some real tremendous indie rock. Fake Plastic Trees, Black Star, Just. The B-sides: [for those of you too young to remember Singles, the great bands put additional songs on their Singles that did not feature on their album] The Trickster, Killer Cars, Talk Show Host. All in, a masterpiece of a body of work.

To be fair i also love Alice in Chains, but i never got into Radiohead, even though i like some songs.
And the main difference between them It’s the voice. Layne is a powerhouse, Yorke is a more peculiar singer not for everyone, but the sound overall is more “fragile”

@@heliosvice I think it’s maybe more fair to say it’s thom‘s voice on THIS song in particular. While this song is awesome, it’s sort of throwing them in at the deep end. Something like karma police or fake plastic trees would’ve been easier listens vocally, however not as musically challenging

If you're genuinely happy then how can one song or person affect you so much that you gotta avoid it altogether? Idk I think our society is just obsessed with always feeling happy and we don't accept our darker emotions. While in fact they are a core part of our being and make us whole. Only accepting positive emotions in music and people just seems naive.

Absolutely. My real quandary with these guys is that a) I really like them and b) I really admire their honesty/authenticity but c) they, in general, just don't have the same taste as I.

Their songs aren't "depressing", they're uplifting. Anyone who hears this and finds it "depressing" shouldn't be reviewing music.

Lyrically they are also uplifting because they help those who are isolated or who are going through hard times feel like they are not alone. Calling Radiohead "Depressing" is not only naive but incredibly shallow and lacking in emotional intelligence.

Surely your point is that it’s the very fact that Radiohead’s lyrics are depressing that people going through similar experiences can relate to that, and in turn be uplifted by a feeling that they are not alone. These songs can be both depressing and uplifting at the same time- it is precisely the somber nature of the lyricism that has the power to unify and uplift.
....this is one of Radiohead's happiest songs....

@@hayatotheninja Yeah I find it a bit short sighted to just outright not accept any melancholic music. In fact, the very best art in general is made by people in dark places. He is not even speaking the truth though because he has loved many depressing songs on this very channel, such as nutshell by Alice in Chains.

One of my favorite things about Radiohead songs is the way they almost overwhelm you at first listen with unexpected rhythms, dissonant notes, dense layers of sounds, jarring contrasts, and even deceptive simplicity at times. They almost always feel "uncomfortable" on first listen, but interesting. And then a handful of listens later all the elements feel natural, complementary and the music is enlivening because it takes you to a new place.
Appreciate how you two approach music criticism from a place of appreciation and honest experience. To look at something from the perspective of what's interesting about it, what does it have to offer, is how we grow in life.
Couldn’t have said it better. Radiohead takes you to that slightly uncomfortable place musically, often emotionally, and that 5th, 6th, 7th listen, when it all comes together is you finding comfort in that discomfort they have crafted for you. That beautiful destination is the radiohead journey.

Yes, I think if one is a fan of prog rock then Radiohead is easy to get into. They are very creative. Personally, I have a love/hate relationship with them. I think they are great on this album and some others in which the guitars are king. Some other albums are like nails on a chalkboard to me. I got Kid A as my first Radiohead album. I did not listen to them again for a long time. Ughh. But many of their albums are great. ;)
Exactly. I generally do not like prog. And I'm not really that big into Radiohead. To be honest, OK Computer is the only album I really like. But nothing about it after a couple of listens doesn't sound organic. The 7/8 bits sound perfectly natural to me. This song is just such a wonderful rollercoaster of textures, tempos, and feelings. Love love love it. This entire album is just such a MOOD.

Marvin the Paranoid Android is a character from Douglas Adams' "A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". It's a self-effacing reference to a sarcastic and depressive/cynical robot character.

One of my favorite Radiohead songs, but, I can really appreciate the willingness to say "nope, didn't do it for me." That's what makes you guys a genuine reaction channel.

There's a live version of this song that was recorded on the night of the 9/11 attacks. Thom Yorke introduces the song by asking "So who here doesn't know?", and after a little confused explanation they start playing. It's just so emotional, you can tell Thom realises what he's saying as he sings "That's it sir, you're leaving, the crackle of pigskin, the dust and the screaming, the yuppies networking, the panic, the vomit, God loves his children".
It's devastating and haunting.

Coming from a metal head, that once frontlined for a thrash metal band in the 90's, this entire album is one of the greatest of all time.
The entire OK Computer album is so good and really should be listened to as a whole, though it’s not imperative. The songs DO have a flow to them that really does make more sense when taken as a whole

Believe me when I say this, when you have tens of thousands of people flocked together in a muddy field singing " rain down.." its in no way a depressing thing, the exact opposite, something that'll never leave me, leave us

George....If you like this song, you have GOT to continue exploring their stuff. I can't begin to tell you the journey they'll take you on. It's never-ending. We'll leave it at that.
Radiohead is not just about this one song, by any means. You've got to listen to the unique genius in every album. No one is like them. In a class by themselves.

Radiohead are genius. However, they are an acquired taste. They require multiple listens before you "get it" but once you get it, like all master works, it goes to new levels.
I went thru the 90's mainly into grunge. Wasnt until about 1999 I got into them. Today my favorite band by far.
As a newer fan, I agree I listened to a few songs and said this isnt for me. I eventually got it, and man are these songs good lol.

Radiohead are unlike anyone else - you would not believe the progression in their sound over their entire back catalogue whilst somehow still sounding identifiably Radiohead. They defy genres. The musicianship as you said, is stellar. And Thom Yorke is arguably the best male vocalist of our time. Definitely my No.1.
I can understand Paranoid Android being a more difficult first listen - it’s not an easy record to absorb due to all the changes… it was compared to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody when it first came out, which similarly grew in popularity over a longer period of time.
But be in no doubt, almost all of your favourite guitar bands (and many in other genres) will have members that were directly influenced by Radiohead. They are masters of the craft and will sit alongside bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Bowie in the Hall of Fame as all-time greats.
Go down the Radiohead rabbit hole. It’s a rite of passage for any genuine music fan.

OK Computer is one of the greatest albums of all time. Musically, Radiohead is on the same level as Pink Floyd, the Beatles and Prince.

As a huge fan of Prince, I have no problem agreeing with this. The musical and sonic palette Radiohead creates is mesmerizing, stunning, melodic, intense, angry, sad, .... they are a superb collection of musicians.
These are musicians on the timeless level. Transcending generations and genres. It can be too much for some musical tastes. Saying that I can't stand the sound of the Beatles, but the rest are must listens.

This is the song that really got me into them. I was a casual listener until this came out. Found out it was on the upcoming album, went out and got it the day it was out.

For me, this song is Gen Y's "Bohemian Rhapsody". It's dark, complex, and the transitions are insane. It really speaks to a generation who grew up with technology that promoted isolation and apathy. Technical prowess on this level is getting harder to find in commercial music.
When you say "technology that promoted isolation and apathy" are you talking about TV and Radio or something else? This song came out in 97' and so was probably written before that. Just curious what you were thinking about.
@TER510 I mean, computers and video games came out in the 80s. For Millennials born in the 80s, we were taught through sci-fi films and novels that computers were going to eventually destroy or enslave us (See: Terminator, Blade Runner and The Matrix for example.) Kids who had early access to computers and the internet were often bullied for being "nerds" before Big Bang Theory made it LOL SO COOL. The album, OK Computer deals with a lot of dystopian ideas and the emptiness of feeling alone.

It's taken me many years to fully appreciate Radiohead. The 'live from the basement' series of videos on TH-cam are a must! You can see the in studio magic the make!

OK Computer has to be one of the best albums of all time. That being said, it took me like 4 or 5 listens to appreciate how great it is.
It's easily regarded in most publications as in the Top 50 albums of all time.
This album still sits firmly at the top of my best albums of all time list. However if you're looking for uplifting, this is a band to steer very clear of

In rainbows has some incredibly uplifting tracks which is why it's my favorite, it helped me get through some tough times.
Reckoner or Weird Fishes from Radiohead are fantastic, I think even Ryan would like those.

Totally agree, i think he should maybe give them another chance by maybe listening to only Thom and Jonny in Street Spirit (in which he'll definitely appreciate Thoms voice :D) or Numbers, and when they get under his skin to try again with these more overwhelming ones.

One of the greatest bands ever, and one of my top three favorite vocalists of all time. Musicianship is out of this world (Johnny Greenwood has two amazing film scores out from last year). I feel like 'Creep' should always be the entry point for this band, but there's so much gold in their catalog.

Radiohead songs unfold on you. After a few listens they come into focus and then start to expand and open up. So much to explore!
Weird Fishes is my fave, Present Tense is beautiful, Nude, Everything in its Right Place, Ideoteque, Glass House gets a bit jazzy.
I am not sure that Radiohead is going to be Ryan's thing. I am trying to think of something that is not so subdued off the to of my head. But I thing George has found a new band to listen to. George might like Krama Police. My favorite is High and Dry off of The Bends.
I could see Ryan liking a lot of stuff of the first two albums. Pablo Honey is basically a grunge album.
@@styot I totally agree with you that there more and grunge/ alt-rock the first couple albums. Just don't know if Ryan is going to in brace the sound of Thom Yorke's vocals. I feel that they probably should have started with some older stuff and then work their way up the chain of albums to give Ryan a fair chance of understanding Radiohead as a band. I completely understand Ryan's reaction and respect his reasoning. This might not be his cup of tea. I hope that they will do more older Radiohead.

Been a massive fan of Radionhead since i was a teenager in the 90s. This album was absolutely one of the albums of my youth and I must have listenened to it hundreds of times. I never knew that the robotic voice in the backround was saying "I may be paranoid but not an android".
I loved this song immediately. It stopped me in my tracks, striking that difficult balance of being dense and complicated yet melodic at the same time. I was also a surly teen, so do what this what you may. 🤷♀️

Man, first listens with Radiohead are always hard for me. For over twenty years now, every time they release an album I listen to it and think, "I don't know if I like this one... I kinda wanted more of what they did on the last one." Then a month later I'm like, "This is their absolute best. They can't possibly do better than this!" and then the process repeats itself. (Someday I'll learn...lol)

@ghost mall I’ve always thought Kid A is their best album but Ok computer has their best songs, what i mean is that Kid A as an album is better that Ok Comp because it feels more well placed together and all songs feel like part of something bigger, but if you listen to the songs separately, you most likely will like more the songs from Ok comp because they can stand alone easier than the ones from Kid A

This is a masterpiece of the 90’s. No doubt about it. The technical level is crazy. The change in signature, beat, 7/4, 4/4, is pure genius. No one ever did anything like this and made it to end up on MTV with it.

I think most Radiohead fans know that Ryan's initial reaction is not that uncommon, especially to this song. On a nuanced and highly conceptual album, this is certainly the song that aims to corral all of the album's themes, making it quite a lot to jump into at first. Hope you guys give some of their other songs a try. One of the greatest bands of all time.
Considering this song was a massive hit I dont think it is all that hard to get into on a surface level. I didn't know shit about music or even knew how to listen to music properly when I first heard this song, but I still loved it and listened to it all the time. I think the reason Ryan couldn't quite mess with it is because it doesn't have a very hard or driving bassline, it's fairly subdued, and Ryan loves and feels groove from a strong bassline, so maybe that's why he couldn't get into it

Brilliant analysis for a first time listen. You touched on some of the lyrical themes really well and how the music is really complex because its actually 3 song ideas that they wove together into one song. Great job.
Ryan looking into the camera at the end of the song made me laugh. Music is a feel thing and while I'm with George, I love that Ryan steers clear of the darkness. As someone who's older than you guys...the darkness in life comes and when it does, you need the music. It helps your soul. Thanks again for what you guys do here.
I think that was what I was trying to say without insulting anyone when you do have actual sorrow hit you like a bus Radiohead is more cathartic than any other rock band I ever heard not angry or sarcastic which is what many bands shoot for when confronting those times in life which come at you faster the older you get then their music is beautiful.

@@mattjns not true, radiohead does have a certain mood and can be really hard to take in the first time. They do have good musical insight and appreciate the musicianship. Cant get offended if they dont like your song choices. My 15 year old self couldnt even comprehend paranoid android the first time i heard it 😂

I agree Let Down is uplifting! Thom does one thing with the vocals whilst the instrumentation spirals upwards and builds into this beautiful high by the end with beautiful vocals as ever by Thom.

George, Ryan, I missed this when it was on patreon, and I’ve got something to tell you about myself, as a woman, and mother, with regards to Radiohead.
I’m almost 54, and I really didn’t listen to Radiohead until my son got into them. What happened is their song “Pyramid Song” became a direct line to the part of my heart where my son resides.
I come from a type of background where I keep expecting death, pretty much constantly. Every time my son doesn’t wake up at a normal hour, I fully anticipate to find him dead. I don’t talk about it with those around me, because that’s too much to put on them, but it’s how I work internally.
“Pyramid Song” emotionally conveys how I feel on each of those mornings. Some might find that way too depressing, but for me, death is a part of life, and I can’t look away from it because it’s uncomfortable.

It took me so long to learn to appreciate Radiohead. I couldn't stand them when I was growing up until one day when I finally connected with their music and now OK Computer is one of my favourite albums to listen to.

Karma Police, Let Down, Exit Music, Lucky, Electioneering, etc. The whole album is an utter masterpiece and it is responsible for some of my greatest teenage memories and musical growth. I was supremely lucky to be 16 when Ok Computer dropped.

Hmm, tough song as an introduction to Radiohead. Street Spirit(Fade Out), High and Dry, Karma Police, 15 Step or Bodysnatchers might have been a better way to introduce this amazing band. They're easlily in my top 10 bands of all time. Thom Yorke is a musical genius. Give these songs above a listen guys.
Can take a while to appreciate great music. this is a master-piece of a tune, they have sooo many. You either get it, or you don't.

colin is often overlooked, the older i get and the better i know these songs, the more i appreciate his playing and how much it adds to their work.
Yep, pretty much underrated yet he adds their distinctive groove to the band's sound with some really killer lines.
It’s honestly weird watching someone naturally reject such a universally loved band. Goes to show their legit though. so many channels I question whether or not they are actually enjoying everything they are listening to. Having a positive reaction would definitely get more views as the people who click on the video will most likely be a fan of the song/band that the video is reacting too.
Radiohead isn’t my favorite band or anything like that, but Kid A, In Rainbows, and Ok Computer are truly phenomenal albums. They are one of those bands that has something for everyone. I really can’t say I’ve ever met someone that said they hated Radiohead.

When I first got into Radiohead in my early teens, I didn't find Paranoid Android that phenomenal song, when everyone else was hyping it. At that time it was too experimental and complex for me but I absolutely loved every track on The Bends. And through The Bends (and other songs on OK Computer) I had to back listening this one to finally understand how great of a song it is and how it grew on me through multiple listens. So probably Ryan has to listen couple songs off The Bends and OK and then listen to this a dozen times more to understand it better

When I purchased this album and Airbag started, I was immediately hooked. Then Subterranean Homesick Alien played and that album never left my CD player.

I find it odd that the tracks recommended are also more in tune with this one. For Ryan's enjoyment, I would recommend "National Anthem" (dark,driving tune with killer horns), 2+2=5, or Just.
2+2=5 or Bodysnatchers for upbeat, definitely! Electioneering maybe also?

I appreciate your growth listening to all this music. initially the rawness of your reactions were...almost arrogant. mainly due to a limited perspective. but as you guys are going through all these genres and sounds and lyrics, you're creating a greater perspective through opinions. As someone who grew up a die hard hip hopper, only to see hip hop grows through other musics, and finding other genres to love and vibe to, this makes me happy. fuck yeah my guys.

It's Thom's voice, he could sing happy birthday and it would sound depressing lol...but Radiohead's music is amazing, ethereal at times.
Unless you were already a huge fan, this album takes quite a few listens to "get". But I assure you, once you do, you'll understand everything that is special about this band. There's a reason Rolling Stone put this as the #42 Best Album of all time! In terms of muscianship, versatility, creativity and badassery, these guys and Tool are far above everyone else in music today.

I thought Radiohead’s stuff would take a bit of time to get into, but I’ve been instantly amazed by what I’ve heard so far (and for those reasons you’ve mentioned - their musicianship is top notch).
And #42 is very low imo. I'd put it at leaast on top 10.
OK Computer is in contention for my favorite album ever. I didn't like it much at first, but it was so different and intriguing that I kept returning to it and eventually it just clicked. Every song is so nuanced and well crafted, you can listen to it dozens of times and still be picking out details, and depending on your mood some songs can hit completely differently. Let Down is my favorite from the album. The moment when "one day" harmonizes with "where you are" is one of the most beautiful moments in the history of music. Paranoid Android is basically their Bohemian Rhapsody or A Day in the Life; it's several short songs stitched together into a very creative whole. It shows off their artistry, but it's never been a personal favorite of mine.
I mostly listen to Rap and R&B, but this one of the best songs of all-time to me. I was listening to it on my way home from work right before I watched this video

was inspired by a loud, abrasive, self-important person he overheard in an LA bar.

Love the channel fellas. I just want to say this is generally listed and rated as one of the great albums in music. And I have seen all kinds of modern day artists list them as a influence in multiple genres including hip hop and r n b. The way they build a song is incredible and they are ridiculous live

Sad depressing songs, to me, are the most beautiful. I’m not a depressed person at all. But I love it.
I appreciate the honesty, when I first listened to this it wasn’t my thing but revisiting it a few years later I fell in love with it.
