I was like you back in the day fueling my V4S to the top top. I thought modern bikes dont have these overfueling kind of problems any more and since our V4 doesnt shine with range i was increasing range indirectly :P And indeed have stutter and stalling! Will check that and fuel normally; thanks for the advice! Greets from germany!

@@RemboUSMC thank you again for always producing great content. I have another issue with the V4PP that i hope you can help me with. At constant open throttle at around 5k rpm there is “jerkiness” back and forth with the bike that I can feel usually in 1st-3rd gears. Usually goes away past 5k rpm. Would you have any idea why this is happening? Brought it to the dealer but they dismissed it. Test drove a regular MTS V4S and did not feel this. The PP is completely stock.

  • @RichDunn
    @RichDunn 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Yes, this is important. I made lots of videos about throttle surging and stalling on Multistrada's and Streetfighters. I wrote to Ducati and spoke to top people in Ducati NA at serious length, both on the phone and in person. All either denied a problem or said they didn't know what caused it and didn't expect the factory to fix it. One of them even said Claudia knows who am, ha! I always suspected the evaporation system and overfilling the filler was causing a vacuum problem. It took me and a few MTS-owning friends to fully test running 2-3 tank-fulls which hadn't been overfilled, to fully flush out the system, before all signs of surging and stalling were totally eradicated. Why Ducati can't explicitly state in the owner manual that overfilling the gas tank will cause evap system purging and subsequently some surging and possible engine stalling may occur until 2-3 tank fulls later, is beyond me. I guess they just don't want to admit that this is a problem when it doesn't appear to affect other manufacturers' models when you over-flll their tanks 🤷‍♂

Maybe im being difficult but i just dont see this as acceptable. A 30k dollar premium motorcycle shouldn’t have to be fueled a specific way. Surging and stalling is a considerable safety concern. This is 100% a design flaw that should be addressed. The worst thing we can do as a consumer is alter our behavior to compensate for a sub par design and dangerous design. My bike is at the shop now with 700 miles on it and the techs have no idea how to resolve this. If I bypass the canister i void my warranty. Just very disappointing situation to deal with after such a large investment in what is a premium product. This is not a motorcycle manufacturing issue. This is a Ducati issue.

Good video.....but......it's a 💩y designed evap canister - have a look at it in diagrams or pull the cover off the tank and observe - fuel easily overwhelms the CF because it's downstream and under the tank filler, whereas on say, KTM 1290GT's, it is way back under the passenger seat. The KTM CF does not cause any issues as it cannot flood but riders remove it to gain more under seat storage space.
You have a point, though under filling gets Ducati off the hook it causes the masses to complain bitterly about poor range 🙄. That must hurt sales.
I removed my CF a year ago and instantly lost all bad effects - I have always fully filled my tank (leaving an expansion gap - just not the standard 1/4 of a tank gap) so I continue to put 21-21.5 ltrs into that small 22ltr tank (wish I could use the phone pocket for extra fuel capacity 😉). No issues and I get 200+ miles per tank.
Another myth is 98 vs 95 octane here in Aus. I use both....whatever is available, and no issue with either.
You are right, but Ducati needs to redesign their version of the CA emissions control add on CF and stop just relying on telling people to only ever part fill their tank. BMW must be laughing all the way to the bank with their 25 ltr tanks 😆....
Trust me, the V4 will run well without a CF but I understand you have annual inspections to pass so removal is not an option, and there is no where else to mount the thing to prevent fouling the AFR's unless it's bolted on outside somewhere 😱.
    Happy N/Y to all 👍

What you’ve experienced isn’t a problem specific to Ducati it’s the same if you overfill your Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki. They all have the same charcoal canister emissions systems or a variation of it. Any bike it doesnt matter what it is your supposed to leave a little space for the fuel to expand and contract. I suggest you read the manual because it’s clearly stated verbatim page 16 of my Ducati manual “when refueling, do not fill the tank completely: fuel should never be touching the rim of filler recess. If I was Ducati I wouldn’t warranty the problem because clearly the refueling process wasn’t done according to manufacturer specifications. Admit your mistake replace the charcoal canister, hope you didn’t do irreparable damage trying to squeeze an extra 15 miles worth of fuel and stop blaming the manufacturer for incompetence.

Your overfill tube should carry the fuel out the bottom of the mc. The vap canister does not allow fuel to enter the tube into the canister because the vacuum is not strong enough. But maybe I am incorrect.

I think you just solved a niggling issue? I recently had my 2017 Multi Enduro serviced and a couple of recall things done. Riding home I stopped for fuel, yes filled it up with 98 Octane. All good riding home as there were quite a few hwy miles. Next day rode into city (Easier to park) later got on bike fired up and rode to first lights. As I clutched it, she stalled? OK, quick hit of the starter and off we go to the next lights, clutched again and stalled (this while still rolling). Hmmm restart and give a few revs, don't stop now out of city (amazing yes) and no more problems. A courtesy call to Ducati to explain. What fuel did I use? 98, My other Ducati runs the same 98 too. "Oh there's your problem these bikes are made to run on 95" HUH? OK I have been running on 95 now with no issue but then again haven't filled "all" the way. Going to have a closer look tomorrow.

Is a failure that we are not able to replicate at the dealer, because it happens for a period of time after overfilling. In the Panigale 1199 and 1299 was common for people to remove the charcoal canister, since it is exposed.

My V4RALLY stalls at neutral from time to time, doesn't happen often but so far I have been unable to find any solution to it. I have tried everything (including removal of evap canister, throttle body adjustment , etc) but it still happens. It only stalls at neutral (one time it stalled when the clutch was pulled in at first gear) So I wonder if your solution will resolve the issue as I have already removed the canister. Weird thing is I owned a V4 pikes peak before and never had this issue. At one point I thought of a faulty cylinder activation &deactivation process, or an overall cylinder synchronisation problem. The bike stayed at my local Ducati dealer for a while and they found no fault at all. In conclusion I was unable to find a fix for it. I will still go ahead and try out your recommendation though, thank you.

I’ve posted this a few places in the comments because I feel it is warranted in this situation, while they don’t explicitly go into detail what will happen, it clearly says in the manual and this is on page 16 of mine verbatim “when refueling, do not fill the tank completely: fuel should never be touching the rim of filler recess.” Now this doesn’t mean you can only fill it 70% just don’t overdo it trying to get an extra 15 or 20 miles. This isn’t just a thing that’s exclusive to Ducati, Honda Yamaha etc. they all have the same emissions systems. Be humble admit your mistakes read the manual and stop blaming the manufacturer for incompetence. Do you blame the Department of Transportation for not telling you you might have a wreck if speeding, then when you have said wreck speeding when clearly signs are posted telling you not to. If you do then you got bigger problems than incorrectly filling your fuel tank.

Your bike probably has the same issue as my 2020 Hypermotard 950. Bought the bike new and at 600 miles I had stalling at low idle and when coming to a stop. The intake was clogged and Ducati replaced the tank and cleaned the throttle bodies. At 1200 miles they cleaned the intake and I received photos of this round. It looked like spray foam all over the inside of the motor. This "foam" would hold the butterflies open causing it to stall. Now at 2000 miles the same thing and Ducati said I'm out of warranty and in order for them to cover the work they would need me to sign an agreement releasing them from any future liability from damage to this bike. It appears that the Plastic Gas Tank is dissolving from fuel maybe ethanol then depositing a foam residue all over the intake, fuel pump, injectors, and fuel lines. You probably have a plastic tank from the same vendor who builds all the tanks for Ducati. Buyer BEWARE. Ask your mechanic to send you pictures of your intake if it happens again.

The only thing moving through your intake should be air. Gas wouldn’t even reach this part of the engine. Do you live somewhere really hot? Did you break in the bike easily? That’s definitely not a typical problem. I’ve heard of the throttle bodies being coated in an anti-corrosion film that can get too hot and make your throttle plates sticky stalling the engine but never “spray foam” everywhere like you describe. Sounds like really bad gas? I’m at 9kmiles on my 950 and stronger than ever. Stalls occasionally at the first clutch in stop if you start riding before warmed up. I can count on my hands how many cold engine stalls I’ve had.

Delete your evap can and you can fill your tank all the way to the top every time without stalling. Should be the very first thing you do to any bike you buy.

Experienced the same issue. It was due to vapor locking with the charcoal canister. Removed the canister and no other issues with my Ducs. 1st thing remove on every bike going forward. You can also clog the fuel filter by leaving the EVAP canister installed.

This video would have been useful months ago, I had that cheap crap removed from the bike. This is an issue with DUCATI. If the gas tank is supposed to hold 5.8 gallons of fuel then I SHOULD BE ABLE TO PUT THAT MUCH IN!!! No such thing as "overfilling" unless the gas is literally pouring out of the tank. If Ducati wants to claim that the customer is "overfilling" something then they need to specify at what point that it. They're trying to shift the blame onto the customer so they don't have to fulfill claims on this cheap crap that they put on a $30k bike. Typical unreliable Ducati crap.

It is in the manual. If all of us would have read the manual, we would have known. Mine holds 5.8 gallons without overfilling.

@@RemboUSMC I always filled my tank up to the very top without it spilling into the upper circle yet my canister still got saturated.
This is a manufactuer defect that Ducati needs to address. Ducati says "don't overfill" what does that mean? Where is the line indicating that? Do they mean don't have gas flooding out of your gas tank? This is a non issue with Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, BMW etc... Looks like it is where Ducati cut corners like they usually do.
If 100s of people are having an issue with it then CLEARLY people aren't fueling their machines wrong. Ducati is just pinching pennies so they have money for MOTOGP.
