    This was a real missed opportunity; a nine-minute (essentially) gripe needs a payoff at the end. Even a quick "here's how it could have looked" redesign would have been much appreciated =)

      I really thought there was gonna be a redesign at the end. I feel like I wasted my time just to watch a video about him. Griping about the menu.

    Maybe it could be a nice challenge to redesign it… Maybe make it available and let the community share their alternative designs… Just a thought. Great video!

    Also, not putting a currency sign is a psychological trick in sales. $12.5 seems more expensive then 12.5 by some weird brain trick.

    • @LogsMaggot
      @LogsMaggot หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think he was referring to the numbers being that rather than 12.50

  • @ericdmaki

    I've read studies that suggest people are more likely to spend more money if the menu does not have a dollar (or pound) sign next to the prices. Should that be taken into consideration for menu design?

    • @ehhh2547

      probably, ive seen a bunch of menus without the symbol

    • @TP-jt2cm

      I would always use the currency symbol; just in case a Karen comes and tries to argue with you about pointless details.

    • @ao_qd
      @ao_qd หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, this is true. When I first noticed it, it was from places that were around the mid- to high-end restaurants. Now it's the default style, and even diner chains will exclude the dollar sign.

    • @hoozn
      @hoozn 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I understood part of his criticism as „use 12.50 because it is supposed to say 12 pounds and 50p“, though. Twelve point five makes sense for sth like weight, length, volume, …,, but not for currency.
      Regarding the legal issue: it shouldn‘t be a problem to drop currency symbols completely, as long as you include a disclaimer, eg „all prices in [currency]“

    Dear Dansky, hope you are reading the comments. Let me ask you something: Is there any way in AI to move one object according to the text length? More details: let's say you have Icon or Object+Text group, in the same line. You have a certain space between the Object and the Text, now if you edit the text (IMPORTANT: the text must stay aligned to the right, the icon is on the left side of the text) and add another text that is longer or shorter, can we retrain the spacing without manually reposition the icon? Why I'm asking: I have Icons that I need to change names according to the language, and in some languages the name is shorter or longer, because the text must stay aligned to the right the space between the Icon and new text increases or the text overlaps with the icon. is there any way?

    That was fun! What itched me most was the pricing format. I hate trends like that. Reminded me of a superior who thought it was the fanciest thing to use camelcase to write the word 'e-mail': 'eMail'… Makes it read like a brand name while it is redundant like 'dial'.

  • @ao_qd

    Earlier in my career, I did work for a lot of small businesses, and most people really don't value these small details in design. To them, as long as all the content is on there, then it works well enough. Even after explaining to them that bad design can affect their business, they still think it's too much of a hassle (time or budget issue) to implement.

      if the customer still manages to order a meal, the owner thinks the menu is fine.
      Most people don't seem to care about the design styling, we do as its our job to.

    I would have liked seeing what you would do to improve.
    I do graphic design after I retired 25 years back as a hobby so definitely not an expert. Few things I avoid is using too many fonts. As an older person I am very critical on font size. Keep it readable, so legibility is my main concern. I don't see any sense on putting the logo etc. on the menu. I'm sure they know where they are.
    But when I saw this video I thought I could pick up some pointers, but unfortunately I heard gripes which were justified, but seeing what one would do to improve would have been very helpful for us amateurs.

    I was sat in a cafe only this morning and thought exactly the same thing about how prices are so frequently being written on menus! What is this “12.5” or “9” styling all about? Nothing wrong with a good old fashioned Pound Stirling mark!

    I don't understand who decides it's a bad design? Of course, if you're a professional and have been doing this for so many years can make a judgment call but for those who don't have those years behind them. So these designs to them who done it probably thinking it looks good. So it's not a mistake but maybe a learning process.

    • @firemonkey4697
      @firemonkey4697 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nothing wrong with having made bad design bc making mistakes is part of the learning process. Design isn’t simply art there’s specific ways to measure a good or bad design. I get your sentiment but the framing is disingenuous

    • @johnguillen68
      @johnguillen68 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@firemonkey4697 I know there's like a sort of do's and don'ts in design. I probably do a lot of "don'ts" in design. I'm trying to get better and I do see mistakes on my past designs that I know I won't make. I guess you just get better as you keep working at it.

      There are actually principles of design that are taught in Design School.
      Things like Contrast, Alignment, Proximity, Hierarchy, Color, Balance, Repetition, etc.
      Following these rules usually creates a good design.
      After the principles of design, UX (user experience) comes into play, user experience can be something as simple as, is the text readable? Do people understand what they are looking at?

    • @firemonkey4697
      @firemonkey4697 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@johnguillen68 I feel you man just keep at, I’d recommend some design books from a local half price books. You can usually find some gems there with good visual examples as well as inspiration for who to use and bend the rules of design to your favor
