After three days I made a west coast beat, layed snoop over for the vocals, played to a few people and they thought it was an actual released song. Felt amazing, some have been shocking though, and I wouldn’t even show them but that’s how you learn right 😁 enjoying, enjoy people, have fun 👍🏻👌🏻

Thanks for the reminder Navie. Definitely needed this. My weakness right now is finishing my beats and watching way too many tutorials. I gotta pull back and act like this is my first time again.

What do you think? Did I miss any important steps? Disagree with any? Let me know, call 1-800-NAVIE-D P.S. Yes, that crooked looking painting in the background upset me too
Step 0 - get a computer/laptop w atleast 16g ram minimum or higher though 8g ram can still get you started making beats if it comes down to it On a side note your systems ram plays a big part on buffer size, sample rate, latency, etc. which I came to find out as a key thing of understanding when starting out
Excellent tutorial. My first beats were just okay then eventually they got better. Better drum patterns, better melodies and chord progressions. The key is locking in on "that sound". I love bass and drums so this is what I focus on first, chords and melody.
Maaaan... Navie is buff as fuck.... Thank you for another great video. I've been on this journey for a year and 3 months. I've really been throught the mindset of hell where you just think everything goes wrong with no improvement, until I saw a video with you were you said something about, remembering to also take a few step downs, because if you keep on pushing through making beats wanting to improve you will eventually walk backwards. That really helped me go forward much more, and focusing on resting up my mind to be able to be creative. When you talk I always listen . Thank you.
Thank you Navie. I love music but I'm coming into this with zero knowledge and not much more skill, so all of your advice and guidance has been very helpful. Also practicing just for the sake of developing awareness and skill has quickly turned into a fun process within FL Studio. As a digital artist it's something I've done for a long time so it's both funny and validating to hear it suggested from some one I view as a skilled professional in this field.

Thanks Navie I been making beats on and off for 3 years now I work a full time job as a chef so I have little time for myself but would still like to get better at producing and perhaps sell some beats in the future or work with specific artists that like my beats. This really puts things into perspective. I had been looking at it wrong. Thanks for helping me see it better.

yup ive gotten better with my beat making over time!...its def a special art and my beats have matured like fine wine over time...my advice is learn from all sorts of producers and take valid pointers and apply them because over time your beats will become a part of you and you really start to create a signature sound that you created!!
Navie, I really appreciate this video as someone who's wanted to produce for a couple years, but hasn't due to just the overwhelming nature of it, my own ego getting in the way, and the fear of failure surrounding doing new things. The advice here feels invaluable off rip, in terms of coming to an understanding that yes, everyone starts frustrated and overwhelmed, and it's about setting those micro goals to help learn the whole process. Also the resources here are super sick, some awesome sources for samples and new instruments!
Great advice. I hope new producers catch this. One of the common pitfalls of a tutorial is the fact that they would only do 2 minutes of research and then rush into the process. This is especially a thing in some beatmaking tutorials where they try to aim for a specific. I feel like some would fail at capturing the spirit of the sound (including phonk and UK drill). However, I do get that people wouldn't want to watch a 45 minute video on how phonk came to be, but I do know that phonk is more than just the 808 cowbell and fast trap beats, that's just one side of phonk called "drift phonk". Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, Great advice, Navie. Seriously, it's not always the tool, it's the person behind the tool. Thanks.
Thank you Chase! Yeah, I know being in that spot myself, it is difficult to give advice and know that it doesn't apply 100% of the time because there are always examples and instances when certain beats break those same rules. That's why I try my best to cover principles rather than prescriptions
Started making beats in march of 2020 back when the lockdown started, about to make almost 2 years doing it and I have to say it’s one of the greatest things I’ve learned to do
Great video, I just started and this is what I needed! I think perseverance is important in that you can't get down on yourself for making a bad beat, like you said, everyone does - even professionals, just gotta learn and grow from that. Thanks for the inspiration.

Excellent, most helpful video I have watched on getting started and I have watched a few. I'm a 66 year old Brit wanting to do this as a retirement hobby.

I believe everyone should have one of these print outs they're free and probably half the battle frfr
Thank you so much for what you said about choosing a daw and the nonsense talk associated with which one is better, I like listening to people like you.......you know....the ones who actually know what they're talking about.
Hi Navie ☺️👋 thanks for this encouraging video. I think a lot of producers who start, including me, feel that way. And you share your knowledge so that they can move forward. Thank you. Thank you very much.
This is sucha good video Navie, you touched on pretty much the whole process. What you think it's gonna be like vs. what it's really like, I wish I saw this video when I started out in 2020. I really did learn more and get better by just doing, you really do get caught in time wasting loops on the journey to get better, when that time could be spend on getting better by doing. Love how you said that 'nothing is above you, or below you, even the best producers use the simplest tools, like loops or their keyboard as a piano'. Music is music and there are "NO RULES, you do whatever the fuck you want", when it comes down to the creative process, you have to experiment and just press buttons, move stuff around, until you hear something you like; alright beats come out most of the time, and so do "bad beats", but that's part of making music, "good beats" won't always come out. Whoever reads this and is starting out, really listen to this advice it'll save you a lot of time, Experiment, don't be ashamed of anything be disciplined on making music, have fun, and GOOD LUCK ON YOUR JOURNEY, my fellow producers.
I've been making music for years, but things like getting exposure, or the key principles of getting a clear and professional sounding track consistently are pretty elusive.. I've definitely learned new things in the pursuit of quality, but I'm still not good enough.. How should I go about getting more exposure and/or a professional opinion of my music?
I was just doing some Christmas shopping and I saw the Akai MPC - 218. For $99 you get a 16 pad midi controller with the MPC software with is a free DAW and a free copy of Ableton Lite 11. The MPC software also works as a plugin in Ableton. So in reality you could get started with just this and some headphones, (assuming you have a PC or laptop) then watch a handful of tutorials on you are rolling.

Instead went back to the basics and started using FLEX, Harmless, and Ogun a lot while building my skills and learning how to use the sounds and manipulate them.
