      Another myth: samples and loops are cheating and real producers do everything themselves without help.

    I would just add one thing: when you feel stuck or your track is finished and you can't figure out what's wrong, leave it. Don't listen to it for at least a week, preferably two weeks or even a month. Then listen and you'll know immediately what changes you can make. Then you'll improve. Work on something else in the mean time.

    • @NavieD
      @NavieD  3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Yeah, I am the same way. I prefer to make concerted changes rather than meandering, making small little adjustments back and forth for hours and not really getting anywhere.

    This vid can be a life changing lesson to some people. I mean the topic he's talking about is applied to most of our lives, including school, business, working out, and whatever. The contents are definitely solid to swallow, but he's telling the truths. Thank you for the enlightenment, Navie.

      @NavieD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thank you Lowan! Yeah, sometimes looking at your own bad habits/ideas can be the hardest thing to do. But breaking through them is necessary to develop better ones.

  • @user-lt2rw5nr9s
    @user-lt2rw5nr9s 4 ปีที่แล้ว +72

    There's this layer between a beginner and their DAW. They don't actually hear what they are doing. This was such a big problem for me, I actually thought I had something wrong in my render settings and FL was the one messing stuff up. I broke down that layer a lot by listening back to the renders, sending in links for critiques, and just practicing in general. Active listening while you are making your beat is definitely learned. Your brain can make you hear something different from what you made.

    • @NavieD
      @NavieD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Oooh yeah, this is definitely something I suffered from. When you are making a beat, you are most likely hearing what's in your head, and what you want the beat to sound like rather than what it actually is. It's like that quote, the idea is always the best when it's in your head. Every step you take to translate it onto paper (or into a DAW), it gets one more step removed from that initial idea.

    Navie you are totally right, I agree with you 100% I just make my YT channel to share my “work files” to find people like me, share experiences and feedback. and I know it’s a long journey on front of me. I start make music a year ago, and i felt in love. I try improved my skills and push my self even I don’t have mood and energy after 8 or 10h in my job. But always I try to find time sit and try create sometimes I have a lot of fun from the joy and sometimes is “pain” but end of the day I feel I do something to be better at. Sorry for my grammar but I hope you get me. And all of the people reading this comment, don’t think you are the smartest or the greatest in making music because always out there someone is “better” then you just be happy that you can learn and improve everyday wish y’all the best ✌🏻

    • @NavieD
      @NavieD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Definitely. It can be tough when you have dozens of excuses flying around in your head, telling you that you shouldn't make music today and watch TV or do something else. Ignoring the excuses and doing it anyways is a skill, just like making music itself. It needs to be practiced.

    I’m glad you put these helpful videos out there for the masses to watch and hopefully learn from! Always packed full of great advice and not even just for beat making honestly a ton of what you say can be applied to many things in life! Today’s biggest lesson was in my opinion for producers to do something unheard of “lose that ego” for a minute and actually learn something in the process 💪😎🆙💯🤜🤛

    Great advice Navie, Harder truths. I've been guilty of those myths in other areas of my life too in the past. I stopped downloading boatloads of free plugins/ or salivating on expensive ones top producers have, I now instead focus on getting better using what I have.

    When the weather is very good like now, i find it hard to work on music behind my desk. Something inside of me tells me to go outside, i am trying to find the perfect balance. Also a mistake i made is to listen to long to the same loop, getting tired of it and its like the sound is changing, that also makes me wonna do something else.

    • @NavieD
      @NavieD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahh that's interesting. For some reason, I find I make the best music in the winter. I get the same feelings sometimes in the summer. Not sure what that's all about.
      Hmm yeah I remember having that same experience that you did with listening to the same beat over and over again. It can be maddening.

    I still remember the first decent beat I made. Soooo many L’s before that (& many more after too). I’m glad you put this message out. There is no avoiding the work necessary to even become competent at this, let alone profitable or an all-timer. You’re serving up straight bars in this vid. 🔥

    • @NavieD

    You know, you don't have to think your stuff is junk or trash, you can be proud of it and still try to get better at making music. As a Finn I know how we put ourselves down to protect our feelings from getting hurt, but it's ok to be proud of your music, even if it is bit crap. See it as a snapshot of that moment in your musical journey or something.

    if one is feeling uninspired/non-creative then taking a break and doing something physical such as taking a walk, or doing push ups can do wonders. the blood and oxygen flowing through the body allow the brain to work more efficiently and this can enable the creative process easier. if one still finds themselves unable to create another alternative would be to do some "research", such as study theory or music history. the "creative" part of the brain may be fatigued but other areas capable of research may not be. listening to others music or researching another artist life (or watching an interview or videos like this) can also provide insights into others creative process, which can then spark your creativity.
