Nothing more satisfying than seeing someone discover Dire Straits for the first time. Welcome to one of the most incredible bands of all time. There are so many amazing Songwriters and guitarists out there But Mark Knopfler is at the very top of the pile for me. The man is a living legend. This whole band are stellar. Enjoy discovering some more absolute masterpieces going forward. Oh and it's amazing for me to discover you. I can't wait to see you react to more Dire Straits / Mark Knopfler songs.
@@GwenMotoGirl of course, it's very subjective and not really does such a thing exist. he certainly my favourite of all time and personally to me, his playing hits me like no other musician on the planet. Mark: 'When I’m working on a solo, I don’t really know how it comes about. I think not being able to sing means the guitar becomes like a voice and you make it do things that you wouldn’t do otherwise. Perhaps if you can’t sing, you push a little harder with your instrument'
That, in my opinion, is THE BEST live performance of all time! The power, the precision, the passion, the talent, the voice! And of course the pure guitar genius of Mark Knopfler and the dramatic driving drums of the one and only Terry Williams, both playing as if their lives depended on it, leaving absolutely everything they have out on that stage! Just brilliant! You won't see anything like that today, I guarantee it!
I'm a bit late to the party here but it's awesome to see a younger person appreciate what I was so privileged to be a part of as a child of the 70s. Keep on keepin' on brother - I love your enthusiasm!
I wish I could go back forty years and hear Dire Straits for the first time again. They've been my favourite band since I bought their first album when it came out.
In my opinion this is the greatest live performance ever filmed. The album version of the song is 6 minutes long, the single was cut down to 4 minutes, and this one is over 10. So you can tell they had some fun with it
Dire Straits is in the category of being a musicians band. Everyone in the industry respected them. Mark was noted for never playing a song twice the same way!

You should check out Mark Knopfler - A Night in London, where he talks about playing the guitar. Also you'll get to hear his live performance of Sailing to Philadelphia.
Notice how much the musicians watch each other, and especially watch Knopfler. This tells you that they've been playing together long enough and are talented enough to be able to "read" and enhance each other. "Sultans Of Swing", "Hotel California", and "Freebird" are outros that you wish would never end.
Who else was waiting for 'that' guitar solo? Man, that awesome. I miss musicians like this. Try Private Investigations, Telegraph Road, Brothers in Arms, Romeo and Juliet, and Skateaway. Mark Knopfler (pronounced Noff-ler) on lead guitar and vocals, he makes it looks so damn easy.

His guitar style is unique. Him, his brother and Lindsay Buckingham are the only ones I’ve seen. No pick, just index and middle finger with the thumb alternating. This gives that pluckey twang sound dire straits are so well known for. Hard to master.
It's so cool, because their live recordings tend to have insane sound quality. Dire Straits were basically a bunch of complete audiophiles and perfectionists. Nothing less than the best was good enough. I consistently return to the Alchemy album, recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon. The album, recorded in 1983(!), has better sound quality than most studio albums that come out almost 40 years later!
A magnificent performance. Knopfler is one of the best guitarists who ever lived. And wrote the songs. No one makes a guitar sound like that. Saw them the same tour this video was filmed. Best show I ever saw.
Dire Straits are one of my absolute favorites. Forever and ever. Mark Knofler is a guitar god and an incredible songwriter. They are sadly underappreciated, but I'm so happy when I see people discovering them for the first time.

Mark Knopfler continues to churn out astounding albums even today. (decades post Dire Straights) Shangri La is an effing masterpiece. Mark is probably the #1 finger-style guitar hero ever. He really made that his own.
Of all the things that makes these guys amazing the fact that they never end this track quite the same way twice, when it's been performed live, is truly an amazing thing. They just let loose and improvise their way out of the song. I love that you can hear them all taking turns to 'lead' them into a slightly different direction at various points. They work so well together and seamlessly follow one another's leads. As much as I love the studio version's amazing guitar-solo outro, I can never get enough of their live outros. So, so good.
You'll be hard pressed to find a better performance anywhere by anyone. It still gives me chills every time I listen to it. Give Telegraph Road a spin and buckle up!
I have watched this hundreds of times and it is always like the first time. Its THAT good. Another live performance by Dire Straits that I think you will like a lot is, Dire Straits Private Investigations 1986 Sydney LIVE pro-shot.
This is a superior video of a solid performance, too. The drummer goes crazy from the beginning, too. This is an album band, too - don't cheat yourself by only listening to their hits - their whole albums are experiences to enjoy.
Mark Knopfler is the lead vocal/guitarist, this tune came out around 1977, was their first big hit. Check out " Walk Of Life", "Skateaway', "Romeo & Juliet", & "Tunnel of Love"

This was a solid hit single for them when it came out, and later on for awhile, they were the best band in the world--this performance captures them at their best, and my favorite thing is that the drummer, who was a hired gun, almost steals the damned show.
I'l tell you the singer and lead guitarists is Mark knopfler, he was born in Glasgow Scotland but grew up in Newcastle north east England, and he wrote all of Dire Straits songs.
Mark Knopfler is one of the most overlooked guitarists of all time. It's incredible! You've got to check out their song Brothers in Arms. It's one of my all time favorite songs. You'll understand why after you hear it
He's not overlooked by other guitarists/people who know music! ;-) If anything it's Terry Williams on the drums that gets overlooked, especially at this concert.

Hey thanks so much for covering Dire Straits. The announcer introduced them as being British and the loud mouth guy exclaimed " What! I did not know they were from England!" I was laughing so hard I almost peed my pants. Poor guy got hecked so much security moved him somewhere else.
Mark Knopfler is a fabulous guitarist who is full of "tasty" licks and this is a great video to be introduced to the band Dire Straits. I love that you loved the song and the performance. Mark has gone on to have an amazing career playing the guitar mostly in the acoustic genre. His finger picking style is very unique in Rock and Roll it is more commonly found in country, folk and classical. Great review, let's do some more. Would love to hear the live version of Telegraph Road
So refreshing to see your reaction to this masterpiece. Dire Straits were incredible and Mark Knopfler has gone on to have a lengthy and highly successful solo career. One of, if not the greatest guitarist and songwriter of all time. You should check out more songs from the Alchemy tour. Telegraph Road and Tunnel of Love from this same performance are both incredible. Enjoy your Dire Straits journey!
This is the best live performance of any band anywhere anytime. The drummer needs an award for this of some kind. “Walk of life” is the next favorite song by them. Live of course.
You get a shiver in the dark It's a raining in the park but meantime- South of the river you stop and you hold everything A band is blowing Dixie, double four time You feel alright when you hear the music ring Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down Competition in other places Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound Way on down south Way on down south London town You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing They said an old guitar is all, he can afford When he gets up under the lights to play his thing And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright He can play the Honky Tonk like anything Savin' it up, for Friday night With the Sultans We're the Sultans of Swing There’s a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner Drunk and dressed in their best baggies and their best Kings road They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band It ain't what they call Rock and Roll And the Sultans Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole Creole And then the man he steps right up to the microphone And says at last just as the time bell rings "Goodnight, now it's time to go home" Then he makes it fast with one more thing "We are the Sultans We are the Sultans of Swing"
With you on your reaction on this one, bro. You prob'ly know by now who the main man is in this vid. The drummer is a Welsh guy - Terry Williams, and right on he did a dynamic thing on those drums. Knopfler is a guitar genius.BTW really like what you did with the visuals juxtaposin' the performance with your image - and that way we get to see both the band and the reaction, most reaction vids just show a little screen with the bands, so well done on that and quite creative way to present it !

One of my favorite bands - I was so lucky to see them live many times. Always a great show and Knopfler is a genius with his guitar.
Hi if you like Dire Straits you should try Thin Lizzy.. Whisky in the jar.. pure class
Mark Knofler wrote great music for the movie, "The Princess Bride." That movie is a classic.
Romeo and Juliet is wicked amazing too. But really everything they do is unique and touches all aspects of the universal language of music.
'Brothers in Arms' is a brilliant song and music video.
The thing that makes dire straits, dire straits is that every performance is different. Knopflers improvisation is flawless
Yes!!
This is the best live performance of any band anywhere anytime. The drummer needs an award for this of some kind. “Walk of life” is the next favorite song by them. Live of course.
Romeo and Juliet one of my faves
Knofler's use of dynamics is amazing. On that tour (Alchemy) it is reported he never played a duff note.
You get a shiver in the dark
It's a raining in the park but meantime-
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie, double four time
You feel alright when you hear the music ring
Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down
Competition in other places
Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound
Way on down south
Way on down south
London town
You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords
Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing
They said an old guitar is all, he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene
He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright
He can play the Honky Tonk like anything
Savin' it up, for Friday night
With the Sultans
We're the Sultans of Swing
There’s a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best baggies and their best Kings road
They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band
It ain't what they call Rock and Roll
And the Sultans
Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole
Creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
"Goodnight, now it's time to go home"
Then he makes it fast with one more thing
"We are the Sultans
We are the Sultans of Swing"
Many thanks for the lyrics...
Thank you!! I feel like great lyrics are often missed, sometimes they're hard for some people to catch. 😊💜💚💛✌️
An Amazing Live Performance Of A Brilliant Track. Great Back Then , Great In 2022 , Great Forever More. 🎸👍🏻
I’ve seen so many live acts in my 50 yrs stones ,Dylan ,police,dr hook, the boss most Aussie bands but dire straits is still my most memorable
Such a tasteful guitarist. And instantly recognizable as Mark Knopfler.
Mark is the lead Guitar and singer and his brother plays the other guitar!...He is talking about an obscure band playing in a club in South London...this is a 30 years + old video!
Mark Knoffler is simply AMAZING! He once said sometimes when the song is over, the guitar still has things to say!
MONEY FOR NOTHING
TELEGRAPH ROAD
BROTHERS IN ARMS are absolutely MUSTS for you.
"Money For Nothing" was the very 1st music release that was digitally mastered start to finish "DDD".
I have ssen them live in Germany over 25 years ago, later also Mark Knopfler in concert. Amazing would be an understatement!
Happy New Year Adogg!!! "Sultans of Swing" with the guitar licks & the drummer is absolute FIRE!!!
Brothers In Arms On the Night
If you didn't hear the MTV version of "Money for nothing" features Sting on vocals in it as well. You'll dig that one.
