Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Sultans Of Swing", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Walk Of Life", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.
Can't disagree with you one bit. I would add Tunnel of Love to that list. I've made my own little pilgrimage to Whitley Bay and the Spanish City. Not too bad for me, I live near Liverpool. Outside the Spanish City some of the lyrics to Tunnel Of Love are engraved in the pavement.
Wonderful reaction, and I'm so glad you appreciate this song. I love the dichotomy between the passionate lyrics and the subdued tone. It feels like the singer is just sitting alone, quietly lamenting his forlorn romance -- aloud and with lyrics aimed at Juliet, but really with only himself as the audience. At the chorus, he starts to let his emotions loose but then quickly tamps them back down again with a sorrowful "Julie-e-et".
Song always gives me chills so beautifully done. Knopfler is not just a great guitarist but a brilliant lyricist and vocalist as well. Thanks brother and keep going down that rabbit hole! 👍🏾
It is amazing the way music brings us together, I am an old man living in the UK, when you looked at the screen reacting to the name "Juliet" , a lot of us all over the world have had our "Juliet" memories... it is an utterly beautiful song.
Just a perfect song. The lyrics, musical composition, Mark's guitar playing, his voice, everything about that song is just perfection. He paints a picture with his songs. I've been a life long Dire Straits fan right from their early days. So glad you like and appreciate his music to.
A few things. Mark Knopfler is one of the underrated guitarists of his generation. Also this song isn't just about Romeo and Juliet. It's about Mark and Holly Vincent. At the time Dire Straits was a band rocketing to the top. Then he meets Holly, who had her own band. Falls in love with her. Turns out she was using him to boost her own career - it didn't. So the lyrics have more meaning. "Oh Romeo, yeah you know I used to have a scene with him" - Holly was on a talk show and talked about their relationship. "Fall for chains of silver, you can fall for chains of gold" - the fame and money she pursued rather than the relationship.
One of my all time favorite songs. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. You are truly an “old soul “. Love reconnecting with old favorites through you. X
Hey ADogg, thanks for playing this song, love Dire Straits and this is one of there best songs. My Juliet was a girl named Kathy, who also turned me on to DS, what a beautiful time. Kathy, if you're out there I will always miss you. Bob
When Mark Knopler sings, "you know the movie song," he's referring to the song "Somewhere" (aka "There's a Place for Us") from the Broadway play (and later film) "West Side Story," which was based on the story of "Romeo and Juliet" by Shakespeare.
I disagree. I think the "movie song" is the one from Franco Zeffirelli's film of "Romeo and Juliet" (1968), which seems to go by the title "Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet." It was extremely popular in its day.
Truly, truly one of the best love songs ever written in my opinion. So ironic the line, "I can't do a love song, like the way it's meant to be," within such an incredibly heart-felt song. One of my favorite lines in a song ever is "all I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme." Right next to "There's gotta be a record of you someplace, you gotta be on somebody's books" from another Dire Straits masterpiece, "On Every Street." I love them so very much, it's like a lifelong relationship. So pleased that you've reacted to so many of their songs when not many do. Love your channel, dear sir. Please do keep it up.
The line "Hey la my boyfriend's back" refers to "My Boyfriend's Back" a #1 Top 100 hit for The Angels in 1963 when Mark Knopfler and I were both 14. Nicely reviewed.
Mark Knopfler's guitar tone is like no other. I LOVE this song, so emotional, so clever. It's just that the time was wrong - the key plot point in Shakespeare's play! - but we can all relate in a contemporary way, sometimes a relationship doesn't work because it was just the wrong timing. "Kiss you through the bars of a rhyme," how brilliant is that image.
Great that you like Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler is my favorite rock artist. Romeo and Juliet is based on something that really occurred in his life where an actress, ex-girlfriend, went on TV and said “Mark Knopfler, yeah, I used to have a scene with him.“. Another Dire Straits song that happens to be my favorite is also based on a real occurrence from his life: Tunnel of Love . As a teenager, he would go to an amusement park, The Spanish City. One night he met a girl and they hung out together with the understanding that they would not tell each other their names and after that evening they would split up forever. Years later, he still thinking about her and looking back on that night and wrote this song. It also happens to have the greatest guitar solo ever. The LP version is my favorite, but you cannot go wrong with the video from the Wembley concert…Mark and the band are amazing. You have got to listen to it!
Actually the ex-girlfriend he sings about was a singer for a band called Holly and the Italians, he helped her getting a record contract but once the band got a bit of traction she dumped him and denied he had any involvement into getting successful.
You’ll love the songwriting in Telegraph Road and Tunnel of Love as well. Telegraph Road is his mythical tale of Detroit from beginning in the wilderness to now. Both are excellent live. I’m so fortunate to have seen them in ‘83. I love seeing you appreciating them for the first time as well!
I fell in love with someone who didn't fall in love with me back over this song when I was 16 years old... I am not 53 and it brings back the very same feelings. 🙈 Man I love your enthusiasm too!
Thank you for another enthusiastic Dire Straits reaction. This song is one I have loved since the first time I heard it. Such clever lyrics. Knopfler is a superb storyteller. I'm glad that you realize that a song doesn't end just because the singing of it is finished. Knopfler is known for his long brilliant guitar outros, always worth a few more minutes of listening. You no doubt know that he composed the soundtrack scores for several movies. Could you react to a song from one of my favorites? The only song on the Local Hero soundtrack that is not just instrumental, sung by the late great Gerry Rafferty, "The Way It Always Starts." Great movie, great song.
Dire Straits has a bunch of good songs, Money For Nothing, Walk of Life, Sultans of Swing… But this has been my favorite from the first time I heard it in 1983.
I've seen Dire Straits live twice, and Mark Knopfler solo 7 times, after DS had broken up. He and the entire band are always INCREDIBLE. He has played "Romeo & Juliet" nearly every single time I've seen him, so it really must be one of his personal favorites. His solo work is every bit as good as the work he did with Dire Straits.
The VERY FIRST that I'd ever heard of Dire Straits was on a Live Simulcast on Q107 Toronto in 1979, broadcasting from the Legendary El Mocombo. Right from the Get go, I was hooked.!! They Broke out with Sultans of Swing, but the second song made me a fan for life. To this day, I have yet to learn to play one of my most favorite songs.....Walking in the Wild West end... But I ain't done yet by a long shot.
Adogg, love that this is going on your car playlist, it makes any ride a joy or for that matter any time. You should do Marks "Song For Sonny Liston" it's from one of his solo albums and is a real banger. It's about the guy that Mohammad Ali beat to become the boxing champ. It's a real banger. Love that you dig Dire Straits so much...you can't miss with any of their songs.
This was my wedding song! Mark Knopfler top 20 Guitarists of all time but like you said, “this is one of the most beautiful songs…the way it’s put together, etc.” Eric couldn’t do it! Anyway, stoked that you’re loving the song! This is great! 😃
Oh and one more suggestion, if you like this one you should do "Theme from Local Hero" it's sorta like this one and is a real treat. They (Dire Straits) did this for a movie soundtrack and it's awesome.
My favorite track from the Local Hero soundtrack is the only song, that is not just instrumental, sung by the late great Gerry Rafferty, The Way It Always Starts. I'd love to see a reaction to it. Local Hero is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys movies. I have the DVD that I bought on eBay.
Love Dire Straits! Mark Knopfler is a guitar genius. I actually took a trip to the Scottish seaside because his score for the movie 'Local Hero' made it sound so beautiful (and it was!!). The song "brothers in Arms' always makes me cry. He certainly knows how to invoke emotions!
Dire straits music has been the soundtrack of my life from the first time I heard them, this particular song has deep emotional meaning for me. Dire straits have created some of the most evocative music you could ever play.
Great song, but every single one of his live performances of this song smokes the studio version for breakfast... Thank you for listening to this beauty...❤❤❤
The lyrics are based on a real part of Knopfler's life when he was very in love with someone (another musician) who just used him to get her foot in the music business. Some of the sentences like "Oh Romeo, yeah you know I used to have a scene with him" is a real phrase she said in an interview when talking about Knopfler. In general when listening to Dire Straits always try to listen to the live versions such as Alchemy.
There's a video of a small set he does this song in London. It's definitely my favorite performance. This song is about his love for Holly Beth Vincent whom is an American musician he had a relationship with.
Another song with a similar feel with critical lyrics and amazing music is Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band “Jungleland” please watch a studio lyric version because the words are very important.
This song was HUGE! Dire Straits one of the best groups ever! We all or should know what in “dire straits” means - Mark Knopfler high rated guitarist! One of my favourite groups along with Genesis!
glad u found this band to react to. try 'skateaway' by them sometime. it is different, but after hearing it a couple times it's prob my favorite song by them (yes, as much as i love 'money for nothing', 'walk of life' and 'sultans of swing.') Hope you check it out, and also hope you like it. U never know! Keep up the good attitude, it is great to see.
I like the early Dire Straits albums and I know what you mean with Skateaway. The Love Over Gold album has some great stuff obviously Telegraph Road, you find yourself revisiting tracks that you'd forgotten about. All of their music requires a huge amp and big speakers. ;-)
Dire Straits songwriting and storytelling through music is always top notch. Very glad to see you enjoy this one! If you haven't done Brothers in arms, you really should, another great one
If you love this try Brothers in arms by them please it makes me cry everytime. I played this at my Brothers funeral when he died of Pancreatic cancer in 2014 aged just 49.
This is my favourite Dire Straits song, I'm glad you felt it. They don't really have any bad songs, so if you choose to keep listening to them, you will have a very good time.
Nice reaction mate! I've watched a good many reactions to this. But you are the first person to appreciate it like I do. I've loved this song for years. Growing up my dad had like 3 or 4 main albums I would play in his stereo after years of hearing them. This was top tier. Still is! 😁😎✌️ Thanks buddy
So glad you love this song as much as I do! You were spot on to let the song play all the way to the end, to the get the amazing guitar outro by Mark Knopfler (singer and guitar). He is a phenomenal guitar player.
the guitar is called a "National" guitar, its a steel body and has a real different sound. The album cover of "brothers in arms" is a picture of Mark's prized National.
Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. Nice list,..always like to see reactions to great music live though,..
My father has a good ear 👂 I learned to listen to good music, thanks to him. I finally seen Mark live, i wish I had seen Dire straits live 😢
Tunnel of Love has a brilliant guitar solo. This was used in the movie Officer and a Gentleman.
Water of Love , Lions , In the gallery , Ladywriter, One world, Man's too strong, Single handed sailor
My college love passed away not too long ago. I dedicated this song to her then and always will. I will always love you Lucy
Every damn time.. This song makes me cry!!!!
Wonderful reaction, and I'm so glad you appreciate this song. I love the dichotomy between the passionate lyrics and the subdued tone. This song is true musical and lyrical beauty. "All I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme" gives me chills.

@@RadCenter Good point.
Thanks Nancy. I always wondered what 'the movie song' was.
The song is an extended metaphor on the Romeo and Juliet story. Just really a story about lost love. Perfection.

I love how they incorporate the baroque sound into the song to reflect the times.
I love Dire Straits so much - so how did this song escape me for so long? Mark's voice is SO distinctive.

In fact, Mark is singing about a relationship, he had to a girl.
Mark helped her, getting her carre'r started, and the she dumped him.
I believe that he is playing a dobro.
