I believe this Alchemy Live performance was in 1984. What's so amazing about this group is each member is a consummate musician. And they work together so beautifully. This live performance has been touted as one of the best ever. I would be hardpressed to disagree with that. Mark Knopfler was a musical genius and he was surrounded by the best of the best.

Terry Williams is a different drummer than the one you heard before. This was Terry's first tour with Dire Straits. He's great. Was in a body cast for most of his young life and learned to walk on his hands just to get around. His dad was in the audience to witness him play for the first time. Anyway, thanks for teaching about how to palm the strings. Mark has such a cool swag here.

Nice reaction gentlemen. Mark Knopfler is incredible guitarist who uniquely uses a finger picking style that we don't often hear in rock music. This style is found throughout country music famously by the likes of Earl Scruggs, Chet Atkins, Tommy Emanuel and so many others. This guitar stylings have its roots in folk and country music but there are a lot of techniques that Knopfler employs that give him a very unique sound and make his music very impressive. I knew we were in trouble when Pops said : "I was never really crazy about Dire Striats ..." At least the son seemed to recognize the genius of the band. Ethan brought up Knopfler's palm muting, but never mentioned that he is finger plucking the strings, no pick in sight. Also, the old man said : Knopfler's voice isn't really my thing" ? During the same time teaching his left-handed self to play the guitar right-handed, Knopfler was busy becoming a wordsmith : A journalism major in college whose pen game is on point. Mark's casual laid-back sort of Dylanesque delivery is the perfect instrument to convey his masterfully eloquence of story telling, all while performing a masterclass of blistering impressive guitar techniques exuding about the same effort of one taking a sip off a pint of Guinness : He doesn't wince - he just happily nods at his band mates and smiles out to the audience - It's one of the many pieces of this puzzle that amalgamates the overall magic. This is a unique situation where the younger has a more evolved grasp of music excellence than the o'l timey dad. When Ethan corrected his father by saying, "There're better than anybody" - Well pops, no truer words were ever spoken ... 👏

The beauty of finger-picking is that it transfers a lot of the critical "work" from the right hand fingers to the left. Nobody using a pick on the right could do what Knopfler does - it simply wouldn't be fast enough or clear enough.

Everyone talks about how amazing Pick was but because of this concert I actually think Terry is better..
The same goes for Chris White on saxophone. His live solo in Romeo and Juliet on On the Night give me goosebumps every time.
This was actually the first album I was ever bought. I got it for Xmas 1984 aged 9 and I've probably listened to it tens of thousands of times lol

@@MrMugilidae Terry Williams originally was the drummer for the Brothers in Arms album but Mark didn't like it so it was re recorded with Pick Withers for everything apart from the intro to Money for Nothing. I'd LOVE to hear the Terry Williams original version of the album!

It's great to see a father and a son, sharing moments like that! It remembers me, when i did it with my father, before he died! Listening to good music, playing guitar together, jamming! So much nostalgy! You should watch the whole concert ALCHEMY, (same concert here), it's monstruous! The sound production, the songs, versions of the songs, the band enjoying, audience enjoying! Great music! You won't be able to say, they're not challenging the other great bands! 😅👍✌️

Brothers in Arms is amazing, maybe the greatest song to ever discuss the folly of war.

There is a brief moment in this clip where drummer Terry Williams is actually mouthing what Mark Knopfler is playing, note for note and still killing it on drums.

I love Dire Straits. Mark is such a great guitar player. Check out "Brothers In Arms" from Nelson Mandellas birthday concert or "Once Upon a Time In the West". Great reaction.

Check out "Telegraph Road" Live from the Alchemy Tour (same tour as this one).
Mark Knopfler plays the true finger picking style. He rates, at least to me, rate up there with the best Nashville has ever produced.

Alchemy: Dire Straits Live was recorded live at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on 22-23 July 1983, the final two concerts of Dire Straits' eight-month Love Over Gold Tour promoting their album Love Over Gold. The concerts were recorded by Mick McKenna using the Rolling Stones Mobile unit. The recording was mixed at AIR Studios in London in November 1983 where Nigel Walker was the engineer.
The opening track, "Once Upon a Time in the West" is preceded by an uncredited version of the "Stargazer" instrumental from the Local Hero soundtrack. "Tunnel of Love" is preceded by an otherwise unrecorded instrumental (actually faded in from the extended coda of "Portobello Belle", which was left off the album), already played on the 1981 tour, but here re-arranged to showcase Mel Collins' saxophone. It is followed by the brief "Carousel Waltz" intro and standard version of the song (with improvisation sections).

I recommend adding I Think I Love You Too Much from the Knebworth '90 concert to your list. Dire Straits are joined by a chap named Eric Clapton and hearing Mark and Eric trading solos on a brilliant blues song written by Mark is something to behold. Also check out Money For Nothing from the Music For Montserrat concert, which is Mark Knopfler post-Dire Straits with Eric, Sting and Phil Collins. I don't think more fun as ever been had at the iconic Royal Albert Hall!

The drums are way more present in this version than in the studio one. It's also not the same drummer.
As others already commented, Telegraph Road from the same live is a masterpiece.

The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising.
It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
    Making a living like that wouldn't suck.🤑🤑
Shout out to the production crew. The filmography of this LIVE concert is incredible.🤩🤩

The son is right Mark Knopfler is a genius on that guitar. Reminds me of banjo picking. I don't know another rocker who picked with their fingers, instead of a pick, maybe Stevie Ray Vaughn? Sorry dad but the Dead don't hold a candle to Dire Straits musicians.

Some people think this is a song by a swing band. It isn't. It's a song about a swing band by a rock band. This song was written about a band that Dire Straits saw in real life.
