Basic Functions of Tractor Fuel System and Mechanics - Ranch Hand Tips

Learn about the basic functions of the Tractor Fuel System and Fuel System Mechanics. The Fuel System of a tractor consists of numerous moving parts. The overall objective is for the system to have proper combustion in the combustion chamber. In this video we'll follow the fuel as it enters the tank, passes through the fuel shut off valve, down the fuel line to the fuel pump, into the fuel filter or fuel sediment container, into the carburetor float tank, which then fills and controls how much fuel seeps through the weeping holes into the carburetor. The Throttle and Choke manage the airflow into the carburetor which in turn calls for more or less fuel into the system. The fuel and air then mix and pass into the combustion chamber.
The Ford Gasoline Engines are all relatively the same (Ford 2000, Ford 3000, Ford 5000, Ford 8N) and are almost identical to the New Holland Tractors. The type of Fuel Pump in these tractors is called a fuel lift pump which is a mechanical fuel pump. It lifts up and down with the engine like a beating heart and then pumps the fuel from the tank into the carburetor. The fuel enters the carburetor through the carburetor float tank, which operates very similar to a toilet bowl with a float valve or needle. As the engine calls for more gas, the level of fuel in the float tanks drops and the fuel pump replenishes the float tank levels.
