It pains me so much HVGN isn't more popular, granted he only makes a handful of episodes, if even that, a year, so it's understandable why he isn't more known; but every single one of his episodes are GREAT. Even his very first episode is fantastic; how many youtube channels can honestly make that claim?
Someone at Nintendo is a fan of Derek’s old videos because it can’t be a coincidence anymore. Now all they need to add is Clash at Demonhead, Shatterhand, Monster Party, Ninja Warriors, Gargoyle’s Quest II, Krion’s Conquest, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Metal Storm, and Lagoon. Also I guess Earthbound as well.
*2014 re-release of this review* HVGN: "You know, Nightshade, some people don't like this game." Nightshade: "Really?" HVGN: "Yeah." Nightshade: "Like who?" HVGN: "JonTron." Nightshade: *looks at the camera* "...fuck you." HVGN: *points at Nightshade* "He-..."
Fun fact about the ending: Derek thought up the "Good games are great, 'cause they're good" mid-filming the last scene of the Nightshade review. And then he had trouble saying the line because he kept cracking up.
Agree 100%. James isnt even a huge fan of video games, hes more of a movie fan. AVGN was more or less an accident that became popular. I credit him with starting the retro reviews we know today, but Dereck is much more passionate, his reviews are more informative, and like you said, he's always getting better and never phones it in.
I made an awesome Lampshade, er, Nightshade character in Fallout 3. -regulator duster -shady hat -lucky shades -rotate the camera to a sides-scrolling perspective X3
I used to own that game. Genuinely funny and doesn't hit you over the head with hints. Heady, mostly non-linear goodness. Trivia bit: The first Nightshade is actually a game made by Rare for Spectrum, MSX, C64 and a bunch of others.
I discovered this game maybe 12 hours ago. I really think all it would have taken to bring this game from "good" to "great" would have been implementing the combat directly into the exploration, Zelda-style. Past that, I'll admit that I've been using save states like a motherfucker in my playthrough.
I actually HAVE heard of it before. Somewhere I can't remember where had a written review of the game. They hated it. I decided to *ahem* obtain a digital copy by COMPLETELY legal means, and loved it.
Alright, another video! This one doesn't look like a title that would strike my fancy (not my particular genre, you could say) but the way you give such in-depth examinations of these underrated and underdog sorts of games is great.
Simply fantastic video. Really. That's three times now that you've introduced me to a new old gem. Discovering games like this is one of my favorite pleasures in life, and I really appreciate what you do here. Long live the happy video game nerd.
I like that though, the AVGN rip off is purely to establish that he's the polar opposite of the AVGN. The AVGN attacks mostly common but god awful games whereas the HVGN glorifies rare games that are good.
Did anyway notice that while Derek was on the floor you could see the case for Rocket Kinght Adventures on the floor next to him. Gotta love subtle hints like that.
Nightshade is a ZX Spectrum video game developed and released by Ultimate Play The Game in 1985. Building upon the earlier titles Knight Lore and Alien 8 using the flip-screen, isometric gameplay branded Filmation, Nightshade introduces a scrolling isometric environment branded Filmation II.[5]
I remember this game. It kicked ass, but several of the fights were so hard, I didn't beat it until I played it on ROM with an Emulator so I could have actual save points
Wow. I cringed when he had Nightshade enter the apartment but then it turned out to actually be pretty funny. Thank you for uploading the Launchpad McQuack video allowing me to find your stuff man.
I love your reviews, I'm so glad I found out about them, even if it was a tad late. And forget what Lampshade said, you're hilarious! All the funny moments are very clever and well thought out. Keep it up... Can't wait to see your MM9/10 reviews!
Hey man, you read your comments? thats kick ass bro. Well, i just wanted to say thanks alot for talking about this game, i looked it up and played it, and its actually in my top 5 list of favorite NES games. Its very groundbreaking for its time id like to think. And adding lampshade to the vid was a great touch, my favorite vid yet! Keep it up Derek!
"This box is labelled: Contents: Herrings, Red." Okay, I have to admit, I like that one XD I am, after all, a fan of "stupid humor done right" as you put it. Awesome video, dude, I'm officially subscribed.
I loved this game as a teenager going back through my obscure NES collection. Never beat it though, it seemed like the game gave a fairly limited amount of get out of jail free cards!
This game looks cool, it actually reminds me of sort of like an mmo, where you always have things to do that are actually useful but you can relax a little and explore the town too. And I liked how you recognized the flaws too. Looks like a great game. Great review
I like this guy. Unlike a certain TH-cam partner, he doesn't steal other reviewers' ideas and actually acknowledges James. It comes off an affectionate homage to AVGN.
Sure Nightshade was a diamond-in-the-rough, but it was one gem of a game, a game that I still proudly own today. Highly underrated, humorous, and creatively unique, I hope that the creators know that they made a great spoof of a timeless genre. Poking fun at gumshoes never gets old! I too have often wondered what an SNES or future console release would've been like, much the same as with Shadowgate (not the dreaded N64 one), Deja Vu and the like. Excellent review and hilarious video. Keep it up!
@patpahootie Whaaat?? Small world we live in! It might've taken some us a little while but we all appreciated your hard work. Did you work on Shadow Run too? If so thanks for that too!
and now you are officially better than AVGN. as he has fallen behind in humor and anything he reviews above the SNES is a shit review. HVGN, you now have a new permanent fan. because you also balanced the review with the skits.
This game was fucking awesome! Love your premise, reviewing awesome games that got overlooked. A++ (Also pretty frustrating, though. Probably beat it once out of every 50 attempts.)
I like HVGNs spirit and how he deals with the whole AVGN issue. He comes straightforward saying that AVGN is inspiration and also praises him in his videos. Something that all the other reviewers should do too: Give some credit to guy who showed you how it's done. Great job Derek!
Good review, I've been meaning to play this one. One thing - every time I hear NES pronounced as "ness" I want to jab a magic marker into my ear. "NES" is an acronym consisting of letters, not a word itself.
Heard of it and played it. Fantastic game, but I could never beat it. The boss fight with the 2 guys in your video around the 9 minute mark always kicked my ass.
i had thought about doing a nightshade movie at one time, but then i read the spirit. Both are too close to do. great review dude. was wondering if you were coming back
I wonder if "part 1" is a Dream Theater reference. They had a song called Metropolis Part 1. The "part 1" was originally a joke. Fan demand made them do a sequel in the late '90s
lol that was great, any true James fan loves the parody joke you throw in every review. You made the character to be the opposite of the angry nerd, so it's funny to watch the happy version. keep up the great work buddy 5/5
Hahaha! EarthBound sound effects when Nightshade punched!
Wow when you made this comment, you were doing your first LP ever. Incredible.
5:54 14 years have passed and just now i noticed that sweet Between the buried and me poster...
It pains me so much HVGN isn't more popular, granted he only makes a handful of episodes, if even that, a year, so it's understandable why he isn't more known; but every single one of his episodes are GREAT. Hasn]t aged too well has itw
maybe because we're all a bunch of nerds?
i was shooting for a little of both.
Holy shit!!! Nightshade is so badass, that Neckbone said "OH SHIT!!" instead of "Neckbone" lol
Thanks for your reviews. If it weren't for you, I never would've discovered this game, or Sweet Home.
I found out about Nightshade from JonTron, and found out about about Sweet Home from JewWario
I'm proud to say I watched this only 2 hours after being uploaded.
I love this review! Great to have you back!
Anyone else come here as soon as Nightshade got added to NES Online?
Yes.

Nightshade and HVGN are funny as hell togather
"At least James is funny."
"Oh, yeah, you're right."
*awkward silence*
PRICELESS! XD
*2014 re-release of this review*
HVGN: "You know, Nightshade, some people don't like this game."
Nightshade: "Really?"
HVGN: "Yeah."
Nightshade: "Like who?"
HVGN: "JonTron."
Nightshade: *looks at the camera* "...fuck you."

Fuck jontron.
Jon Tron is a racist asshole. His opinion stopped mattering when that was made public. Also, only a fool would dislike this game

Where did you hear that info if I might ask???

My favorite part of the whole episode. XD

I have watched this video far too many times. I bloody love it. The humor is just amazing!
Please make more.
2008 was a different time 3:04
Have you watched happy video video game nerd
Do you you watch angry video video game nerd episodes
@@jamalgordon8883Man, not even AVGN never dropped the f slur
I think that was considered a pretty harsh slur even 10 years before ‘08.
Great to have u back, I loved the whole video
the boss you fight after those two is even harder.

Sick video man, keep up the phenomenal work.
Not only have I heard of this game, I have owned it and beat it. Awesome video! The jokes were really funny.

The suspense in the intro was just killing me.....

Still a good video.

That part alone is one of the reasons I love this guy's videos.
The Shadow or Dark Man i'd say.

"Holy shit! Nightshade!"
Whats wrong with Sega's Nighshade? I have that game and I think its good
The ending song is also from a Kemco/Seika game, but it only plays during one small part.
It's good to see HVGN is back
"Superheroes don't drink!"
Tont stark: Wait what now?
Great job man. Keep up the good work!
Welcome back dood, awesome video. Even I don't have this one. :P
Thank you for the random Shadowgate music! It really made my evening.
Bloody A, this was brilliant! Your acting is great, and so is Nightshade's. :)

Somebody get Necrophone on the horn to remake this.

yeah, it's not for everyone. but thanks anyway
I had this game. I made the mistake of using the health chamber in Vortex's lair every single time I got hurt, thinking it would last forever.
Okay, I really laughed at that last cheesy line before Nightshades shouted 'WHAT!?' XD

Mad props on playing Shadowgate music! Excellent review.
The nearest thing I can think of to a popularity meter is either the "respect" meter from Saints Row, or the "naughtyometer" from Jack the Nipper.
Just picked up this game today for 5 bucks and it's great! Definitely a hidden gem of the NES.
Another awesome vid! Keep it up man.
Also, that part where you and Nightshade were doing the pose and then stopped was very Office like.
Good video, I always wanted to try this game. Snatcher and Shadowrun are two of my favorite games so I'll definitely try this one out.
