Great episode. Might I also add that Metric was Bryan Lee O'Malley's inspiration for the look of Clash at Demonhead, which is why Edgar Wright and his brilliance went and asked Metric for a song for Clash at Demonhead, Black Sheep being a song they just made that they didn't feel fit their upcoming album, so they offered it to Wright and it surprisingly fit very well with the scene it would be used for.
As a long-time fan of James Rolfe and the AVGN, I must say: I fucking loved your videos!!! God knows why it took me so long to watch it, but am I glad I finally did!
This game was part of my childhood growing up, and I loved it to pieces. It was my favorite NES game out of all the ones I had (and I still own all my NES games, by the way) growing up. Over the years, I've liked other NES games more than this one, but it still ranks up in my top 10. Thanks for reviewing one of my favorite NES games and giving it the recognition it deserves.
I grew up playi g this with my dad, the music and memories gives me chills to hear it again... This was one of my favorite games on the NES when i was young.. Thanx for the review! Good job!
I read about Nightshade a LONG time ago and really wanted to play it, but never got the opportunity, and forgot about it... but there was always vague, half-remembered images that I could never put a name or useful description to. And now, here on your video about a completely different game, I finally remember this title. Thank you, HVGN. I feel like a ghost that just remembered what's keeping it that way (I exaggerate, but you get my drift).
I can remember when I was a kid and first got this game, which I still own my original copy. My dad, my brothers, and I would spend hours together trying to beat this game. We found so much in the adventure, but never did beat it. I can remember getting to Faysha for the first time without using the jetpack. It was a big feat for me, and about 6 years old making it across those weird platforms. They always looked like weird "professor" or "math teacher" heads to me. Sometime later, while playing on a rom, I was determined to finally beat this game. And I did. This game brought us close together and made us learn how to work together. It's such a great game and a memorable part of my childhood. I'm glad you did a video on this. It's definitely worth checking out. I've always wanted a sequel or updated remake of it. Heck, I've even hoped Nintendo and Hal Laboratories would put Bang in Smash. There's so much they could do with him. Weapons, outfits, and maybe even use the Hermit powers in a Final Smash.
"I own the CD, but I'm listening to it on my iPod. Figure that out." Derek from the past, I am from the future of 2022, when we spend 60 bucks on vinyl records of our favorite gaming soundtracks, which actually come with download codes for a digital copy of the album. Figure *that* out! XDD
Great video HVGN! I never could get very far in that game (didn't help we had to share the NES, siblings really bite in them game time) Gotta to love local reviewers!
Played this at a friend's 25 years ago, it was in japanese so I never knew what game it was. I've know the name "clash at demonhead" since way before I saw the Scott Pilgrim movie and still I never bothered to check what the hell it was. Thank god I stumbled on this video, now I've got a job to do!
I've still got this game! I have always thought it was fun and even managed to beat it when I was a kid. While the music is repetitive I always enjoyed it, and I loved how much detail went into the Bang character. This is still one of my favorites from the NES and I'm glad you gave it a good review.
This was my favorite nes game as a kid and I have been trying to figure out the name of it for freaking months! You seriously have no idea how excited I am right now! Also slightly pissed at myself because I have seen Scott Pilgrim a ridiculous amount of times and never made the connection ...Anyway, great video! Can't wait to go buy this game now and relive it.
Excellent review as usual, looking at all the angles and presenting the ups and downs with equality. As for my cameo in Scott Pilgrim, the hair color snafu was unfortunate but fits the games style pretty well, a game I fully endorse as a neo-retro gem of a game that's more of a love letter to Technos than a movie/comic tie-in, something i'm all about!
Holy Hell! I never realized Ron Jeremy ran the Super Shop. I've played both this and Metal Storm. Both good and over looked games like you said. The anti-gravity feature in Metal Storm really rocked my socks off considering I came from a Contra background.
@marscaleb i ran out of clash at demonhead songs to use. it's a pretty sparse soundtrack. rygar's soundtrack fit perfectly since it has a similar sound that also doesn't have percussion.
Omg one of my fave childhood games. I couldn't remember what it was called before. It was driving me batty not being able to reference it. So happy now
I had this when I was like 9-10. I remember the game being huge, but I was able to finish it. The most epic moment was the fight with the demon (with Apollos Sword)
Thanks to your show, I learned about this game and I'm happy to say I found a copy of it at a flea market in perfect condition for a dollar. I picked it up and haven't been happier, thanks hvgn!
Very nice work here. This was one of my favorite, if not THE favorite little known NES game from my youth. It's on par with Faxanadu for me. My cousin Tracy had this game and I stayed with them for two weeks during the summer one year and I just fell in love with this game immediately. It was so badass. Bringing together many of my favorite things. Anime, RPG elements, power ups, and an open world. But played more like a traditional shooter making it more fast paced than your typical rpg-like..... And any game with a fairy was usually guaranteed to be good. Lol. Maybe that's my opinion based on my own experience but if there was a bad NES game with a fairy, I can't think of it. 🤣 Love your work. I especially like your videos on obscure accessories and things like that. This is a nice addition. I'm late to the party but I'll be binging Happy Nerd now lol. Keep it up.
Man, I have to get my hands on this game. In fact, this is truly a hidden gem in the NES library. You have to take a look at the Hiryu no Ken series on the NES. Very underrated NES games. -kid thunder
Great review D. I'll be sure to pick this up if I see it. Also, a lot of what you said about the game in the beginning (the beautify flawed types of games) reminds me of Deadly Premonition. If you're still doing this show in 10 years, that should one of your reviews.
I grew up with this game. The soundtrack was part of those happy memories I still have. Whilst I was little at the time and barely understood the story, what I really enjoyed was the various suits you could wear. Speed Boots, the Armor Body. Now that I'm older however, and can still remember a lot of the twists (shockingly), they really make my hair stand on end, even at today's standards. It was a fun, goofy game, with plenty of character. They just don't make 'em like this anymore.
@Ludlov i've only just played the demo, it was kinda boring by myself. i'm sure it's way more fun with some buddies and a few drinks. then again, playing by yourself means you can hear Anamanaguchi better!
Hey, I'd heard of you but never checked you out until now, I'm a huge fan of the AVGN and I was happy to see that you acknowledged your inspiration and cover different content than he does. This game looks awesome and I liked your review, you should check out "Crash 'N' The Boys: Street Challenge", another NES classic referenced in Scott Pilgrim. Subbed
It's kind of ironic how not one of the thumbnails for this video is of a scene from the game you're reviewing, or even an image of you at the very least. This is one of those games that I did not have myself but I thought of many several times as I was growing up and was all like "Oh what was that awesome game?" I was sold on how awesome it was just with the big system of routes that you get to choose. I never knew that there was an actual story, or specific places I was supposed to go.
2:27 the blue hair is probably a reference to 'MegaMan', because in the game the sprites show his hair black but in anime-like cutscenes his hair is blue.
Hey Derrick, long time watcher here and i was just wondering, i'm currently part of the "modern" era of videogaming (xbox 360, ps3, ect) but i really want to start retrogaming. Is there any place you would recommend? thanks, Adam
How is this guy not partner? Your shit is awesome Lophatjello, and its good to see you do a review of this one, its surely a forgotten classic. I couldnt get into it myself, I was late to the party, but it seems like it would have kicked much ass back in the day.
Ah, this actually one of my favorite games for the NES. Other than losing health when you fall in the water, the only beef I have is with this game is you can't fire the gun overhead.
Im really glad I picked this game up some 5 years a go, couldn't get into it (I was five;I couldn't figure out how to get the sword in OoT) And now I can be glad I own an underrated gem :)
I remember Nintendo Power talked about this game a lot and had plenty of cool artwork for it, I always thought it looked pretty sweet. When I finally got to play it years and years later, I was glad to see that my assumption had been correct.
I completely agree with the walkthrough component of these games. My brain isn't as focused as it used to be. Playing a game like this or Metroid or even a game like Shin Megami IV would be INFURIATING without a little assistance. It makes the game so much more fun.
@chosentonessournotes oh, sorry. usually this game is dirt cheep, hope it didn't cost you too much! to be fair, i told fans a couple times over the years i wasn't going to review this game because I didn't think it was that great. it even took me a couple tries before I "got" clash at demonhead
Well done sir, it's been way too long since your last video. I never use walkthroughs, I'm a purest and sometimes honestly it kills me, it really kills me. Oh, and Scott Pilgrim was totally badass.
Bang appears in the beginning of stage 5 and in stage 7. all of the characters in books have at least 2 appearances (this apparently includes the reference.)
Bang has blue hair in the Scott Pilgrim game because he had blue hair on the original Japanese cover to Clash at Demonhead (or Dengeki Big Bang, as it was called in the land of the rising sun).
I agree, Vic Tokai was an underrated company. One of my favorite games from the company is "Golgo 13:The Mafat Conspiricy" for the NES. There was the previous "Golgo 13:Top Secret Episode", but to me, Mafat Conspirecy was superior in graphics and gameplay at the time.
This game really needs a remake.
As a long-time fan of James Rolfe and the AVGN, I must say: I fucking loved your videos!!! God knows why it took me so long to watch it, but am I glad I finally did!
"he's bad. and i mean BAD!!" as great as you are on your own, i love those little AVGN references you throw in.
WE ARE SEX BOBOMB AND WE ARE HERE TO MAKE U SAD AND THINK OF DEATH AND STUFF 1234
I used to play this all the time. As for the music being "forgettable" I still find myself humming the music to this day. This was a great game.
I grew up playi g this with my dad, the music and memories gives me chills to hear it again... This was one of my favorite games on the NES when i was young.. Thanx for the review! Good job!
Had this as a kid, and bought it again just recently!!! One of my favorite NES games!!
Great take on an overlooked retro title. Also, thanks for inserting some excellent NES Rygar music toward the end. That track always makes me smile.
I read about Nightshade a LONG time ago and really wanted to play it, but never got the opportunity, and forgot about it... but there was always vague, half-remembered images that I could never put a name or useful description to. Big 80's hair, knee high boots, killer pecs, scar on the face? Sounds like Bang Shishigami from BlazBlue was based on this character.
He fights for Love and Justice
@Famf9983 and it just happened to fall at the half way point too, so it's also the title image!
Writing down passwords, making notes and drawing maps. Truly a add-on to any retro (and sometimes modern) game experience.
"You don't 'start' your adventure with Bang you 'ATTACK'!"
Dude.......showing love to Clash At Demonhead, Monster Party, Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Faxanadu? YOU DA MAN!
I totally missed this one back in my NES days, now I got to pick it up now.
the editing is mindblowing!
I always imagined Bang talking in Stinkoman's voice. It fits so well. :D
YES THIS
are you at all working on a scott pilgrim vs the world game review
"I own the CD, but I'm listening to it on my iPod. Figure that out."
Derek from the past, I am from the future of 2022, when we spend 60 bucks on vinyl records of our favorite gaming soundtracks, which actually come with download codes for a digital copy of the album. Figure *that* out! XDD
Great video HVGN! I never could get very far in that game (didn't help we had to share the NES, siblings really bite in them game time) Gotta to love local reviewers!
Why is the store run by 80's Ron Jeremy?
Ron Jeremy!!! XD
he's a total chick magnet for sure. XD
The Happy Video Game Nerd is awesome. I'm glad I started watching.
Wait, it was in Japanese? So were you playing a pirated copy? Multicart maybe? Famicom game cart with converter?
@@leroyvisiongames2294 LMAO a bit late but yes, Japanese game cart with converter.
Great video! This game has always been one of my favorite NES titles. Keep up the good work!

This game kicked my ass all over the place as a kid.
That nostalgia, this one needed a sequel.
Excellent review as usual, looking at all the angles and presenting the ups and downs with equality. Lol, I have a huge tome of notes from old games. That thing might get it's own video one day. Good video derek.
Holy Hell! I never realized Ron Jeremy ran the Super Shop. I've played both this and Metal Storm. Both good and over looked games like you said. The anti-gravity feature in Metal Storm really rocked my socks off considering I came from a Contra background.
"Awesome! It's A Sprite! "
quite possible the best voice over ever...
@marscaleb i ran out of clash at demonhead songs to use. it's a pretty sparse soundtrack. rygar's soundtrack fit perfectly since it has a similar sound that also doesn't have percussion.
I've grown to really like your show. It's a nice contrast to AVGN, and it's helping me discover more classic games. Keep it up!

@xxc3lld4m4gexx a personal favorite of mine; it's the cave music from the NES port of Rygar. in fact, all music that appears after 9:40 is from Rygar.
are none of these monetized? it’s been a joy rewatching these while gaming and treating them like podcasts.
My FAV game from when I was a kid, I just finally bought it again. Seriously an amazing game!
great refrinces to the books with that last line :D
Great review D. I'll be sure to pick this up if I see it. Also, a lot of what you said about the game in the beginning (the beautify flawed types of games) reminds me of Deadly Premonition. If you're still doing this show in 10 years, that should one of your reviews.

Could someone please tell me what song is used in the credits of this video?
I'M OBSESSED WITH THE REPETITIOUS SOUDTRACK LOL
i LOVE the intro song, it is AWESOME!!
@Ludlov i've only just played the demo, it was kinda boring by myself. i'm sure it's way more fun with some buddies and a few drinks. then again, playing by yourself means you can hear Anamanaguchi better!
I never noticed how natural your lines sound until I watched the outtakes.
Clash At Demonhead is a brilliant name for anything. Also the super shop owner looks like Ron Jeremy.
i got the game for 99 cents on ebay and it came yesterday... im already in love with it
I had this game when i was a kid.. One of the best
Hey, I'd heard of you but never checked you out until now, I'm a huge fan of the AVGN and I was happy to see that you acknowledged your inspiration and cover different content than he does. One of my favorite games on NES :) my parents got it for me back in '89 from the HomeShoppingNetwork on tv :D
Really began to love this game after a while. It's definitely buggy and difficult to control at times, but it's certainly a gem of a game!
It's kind of ironic how not one of the thumbnails for this video is of a scene from the game you're reviewing, or even an image of you at the very least.
This is one of those games that I did not have myself but I thought of many several times as I was growing up and was all like "Oh what was that awesome game?"
I was sold on how awesome it was just with the big system of routes that you get to choose. I never knew that there was an actual story, or specific places I was supposed to go.
yeah, you can even see daphne from scooby doo right next to hero bang at 7:55
One of the absolute best NES games. Ever
2:27 the blue hair is probably a reference to 'MegaMan', because in the game the sprites show his hair black but in anime-like cutscenes his hair is blue.
any chance of an mp3 file of this particular theme song?
what the name of the song at 0:24
thanks
The only thing this review did was get me more excited to see SP vs. The world today! :D
Good as usual Derek, much love
Hey Derrick, long time watcher here and i was just wondering, i'm currently part of the "modern" era of videogaming (xbox 360, ps3, ect) but i really want to start retrogaming. Is there any place you would recommend? thanks,
Adam
Oh, okay. Credit is given where credit is due. I ate my words.
HVGN
I really enjoy your videos, man. Keep it up.
Bang's sprite in-game looks like Goku from Dragonball to boot. He's that badass XD
"... Bad Mother-Shutyourmouth!" Gold there XD
Great job HVGN :D
dude you're dope af
GREAT game. Picked it up on a whim and never looked back!
Ok I can't figure out that NES music "rendition" from 0:08-0:16 for the life of me. Please tell me what it is!
This video game used to kick my ass all day as a kid. Ahh memories.
How is this guy not partner? Your shit is awesome Lophatjello, and its good to see you do a review of this one, its surely a forgotten classic. I couldnt get into it myself, I was late to the party, but it seems like it would have kicked much ass back in the day.
"So Bang is our hero and he's one bad mother-shut-your-mouth...
but he can't hold his breath for like 3 fucking seconds?" - Lol.
Love the new intro btw!
Ah, this actually one of my favorite games for the NES. Other than losing health when you fall in the water, the only beef I have is with this game is you can't fire the gun overhead.
@lophatjello can i hear your oppinion of sweet home from 1998 for the nes?
The jet pack was so fun.
very nicee !! you have a big fan here in mexico !!
Totally in lesbiens with games? That's a straight up WIN right there.
Ah taking notes with games. Brings me back to a more innocent time when my notebooks were filled with scrawls and maps.
THANK YOU!!!! I love this game!
I completely agree with the walkthrough component of these games. My brain isn't as focused as it used to be.
Playing a game like this or Metroid or even a game like Shin Megami IV would be INFURIATING without a little assistance. It makes the game so much more fun.
Hey thanks a lot man!!! you just made me purchase this game off amazon!
@chosentonessournotes oh, sorry. usually this game is dirt cheep, hope it didn't cost you too much! to be fair, i told fans a couple times over the years i wasn't going to review this game because I didn't think it was that great. it even took me a couple tries before I "got" clash at demonhead
great episode, keep up the good work...I never knew thats where they got the band name from.
Well done sir, it's been way too long since your last video. I never use walkthroughs, I'm a purest and sometimes honestly it kills me, it really kills me. Oh, and Scott Pilgrim was totally badass.
Dude! This is awesome so now I want to play Clash At Demonhead like reallly bad! \m/
Damn you Derek for making me buy old game one more time, think i will have the game next week ^^
Awesome review as always :)
