"He's a knight with a jet-pack. YOU CAN'T TOP THAT". I've never really thought about that, but those 2 sentences are pretty interesting. It's what I feel a developer should adhere to when conceiving a video game character. It's pretty hard to make something original nowadays, so combining something that would kind feel out of place on something else is welcome. Come to think of it, the developers of Shovel Knight were probably inspired by Sparkster. A knight with a shovel. Now let's see a video game where the protagonist is a turtle wielding a flamethrower.
Shovel Knight is more like Ducktales meets Megaman. If something, Rocket Knight is more like Pulseman, maybe a little like Rygar. Oh, yeah, and there's a turtle in Shining Force 2. It isn't the main character, but when promoted, it can spit fire.
Make that 4 turtles. Let's make them mutate and teach them oriental martial arts and give them weapons. Did I mention they are going to be teenagers? Oh boy, we are gonna be filthy rich!!!
Awesome video, Derek - and love the "don't be negative" at the end.. if I'm not mistaken, a nod to Rolfe's review of Ricky 1? I actually played Awesome Possom Kicks Dr Machino's Butt as a kid.. it.. was... bad. The title screen really worked for it like Ghostbusters on NES. It just bursts in with a female chorus singing "AWESOME POSSOM, KICKS DR. MACHINEO'S BUTT!" and then the damn rat says "I'm awesome!" in the most pathetic annoying voice you can imagine. Perfect.
Of all the other reviews for this game, ill always come back to this one. 15 yrs later, and something about the enthusiasm and Derek's quirky delivery makes me smile everytime I rewatch this one.
True, but what about other appearances of the game like character design wise he's no Sonic clone, its kinda more like Pulse Man, ya know Pulse Man right a GREAT Japanese Mega Drive exclusive but thats gameplay wise. The design of Sparkster, well, its kinda like Sonic, with the box art with Sparkster with that mean/edgy look to him, well you can say that. But overall the game looks GLORIOUS in terms of the gameplay, music, graphics, it is all GOOOOOOD and makes a great Pulse Man clone in terms of gameplay but dats just me. Don't know bout you mate.
Ah yeah, I see why you say that. Probably because both Sparkster and PulseMan do a tackle move that is used for in-stage progression and attacking enemies and bosses.
I just had to come back to this video. It's interesting to see how far you've come as a...well, not a historian in the strictest sense, but someone that explores historical events in video games. HVGN was something that got me out of the downward spiral of endlessly negative AVGN knock-offs.
It's nice to watch some of your older videos sometimes! Reminds me of better years for me since most is shit nowadays because of illness :/ Back in those days everything was perfect! Especially when you uploaded a video! :D
Nice to see this still up here. This video was the reason I bought this game. Havent played it for years, so I'm not as good as I used to be. But I should probably break it out again.
I can't let a thing like that go to my head Until I see my name in Special Thanks sections of credits, I will not take any credit for any of these revivals we've seen recently. It's just a right place/right time coincidence.
This is the reason I watch the HVGN. I was reminded of this game by him, and decided to pick it up on my Genesis. It's still one of my favorite games of all time.
@tyfra95 what?!?!? there's a new Rocket Knight?? Next you're gonna tell me Startropics is on Virtual Console and Little Nemo has been rereleased on DVD ... jeez some people ....
Well whatever the hardest version is, I could never quite beat it. I got as far as I figured I could go without getting hit. The space level's asteroids and the spaceship boss's nonstop bullets were just too much.
Dude, great video! It highlights my single favorite game for the genesis! Ever since the first day my Dad brought it home from the game rental place at random, 'cause he thought it "Looked like something that could be fun" I have loved that game. That was back when I was 7. I'm 21 now and it's still my all time favorite genesis game. That game had so much style I was shocked.
4:05 - 4:11 Totally forgot that was a Captain S reference. I just re-watched the episode that reference was... referencing and was like "Holy shit! That DID come from this show!" RIP, PBC Productions.
Hi Derek. Not sure if I ever commented on this video or not and I am too lazy to go through all the millions of comments. But I wanted to tell you that the audio mixing on this video is fantastic. Your friend did an excellent job. And the video it self was good as well.
Oh, i got so happy that you mentioned my favourite game! Rocket Knight Adventures is purely my most favourite game of all time and it is soooo good! I own the Mega Drive/Genesis version of Sparkster. It is good but not as good as the original RKA. Oh, and there WAS actually a reviwer who made a bashing of Awesome Possum: Urinating Tree but he got banned for no reason and his video is thereby gone. We can always hope he makes a new account and reupload the review 'cause it was great. Great Video!
I loved Rocket Knight Adventures as a kid! I used to go to my friend's house everyday to play it. I almost cried when his Genesis broke down because I didn't get to beat it. Nice reference at the end,"Don't be negative." heh Hi, Derek's mom!
Finally got your own unique theme music I see, great stuff :) And "Inspired by the work of James Rolfe" is cool. You might want to add "a.k.a. Angry Video Game Nerd" tho. I didn't like the huge yellow text in the intro, doesn't look "professional" enough (I know it's all just for fun but... well..) maybe could work some on that :) Otherwise it's a great review as always, keep it up :) Oh and, hi Derek's mom!
yet another brilliant and wonderful episode!! i'm a huge sparkster fan and i had no idea that the two sequels were made inhouse by two differnt teams. so not only was the episode great, i learned something!! now that's entertainment!!!!!
Damn, finally. Thanks for your video I finally know what was that weird game which I played long ago (2:19). I was searching it forever! And that's why I like watching video games reviews. I'm always learning something new.
You know, like those Sonic imitators, I thought you were just trying to copy AVGN, but..... :) You really got a gimmick here.... You need MOAR exposure!... :D Best of Luck to ya, laddie..... ;)
We're attempting to make a rocket mouse game, but it's going to take awhile because we have to add a lot mechanics. We want to try these in this game but maybe add new ones. Ideas are welcome.
I saw this on Revver before TH-cam(ZOMGZZZ, ITS SOOOO AMAZING! MY COMPUTER NEVER FEELS LIKE RUNNING REVVER!), but either way, I love this review and this game. If I don't see it on Virtual Console soon, I'm blowin' up Japan.... Keep up the awesome work, Derek!
Excellent review! The reason I missed this game out was the magazine-reviews stating it was too hard. Had I known Mr. Alien Wars was behind it I obviously wouldn't have cared.
You, Derek, are very entertaining to watch. I have watched your videos on here for quite some time, and I have just now subscribed - hope you get more videos rolled out soon! And I've always had more respect for you for actually giving credit to James. You are very funny and entertaining in your own right. Just nice to see you aren't "riding on the coat tails" so to speak. As always you have made another amazing video. Keep up the good work - 5 stars!
Thank you! I actually won the auction and I should get it the upcoming week, and for the spectacular price of 119 Swedish kronor plus shipping (which is about 14 US dollars)!
Sparkster is definitely one of my favorite childhood heroes. He doesn't have to act badass, we all know he is. But the way he smiles and rocks back and forth when you leave him idle... you can tell a sprite's personality just by watching their idle animation; with Sonic you could see he craved for speed and would be vaguely annoyed if you left him stand for too long. Sparkster merely stands there with a smile and cheerfuly squees at you with that adorable sound effect. So cute :3
I miss Rocket Knight Adventures like CRAZY!! And I was SO close to beating it! I just couldn't beat the giant boar mech thing Avel Gear piloted in Stage 5. Also, considering you could alter button setting to your preference - The one feature that makes Sega Genesis the winner of the 16-Bit Era of the "Console Wars" - is you *COULD* set it so the B button *WAS* one of the 2 Attack Buttons!!
Urinating Tree (aka Fat Mann Judgeth) did an "Awesome Possum" review some time ago. His account is now closed, but the review is somewhere on YT. Anyway, good review, HVGN :)
In the european version of RNA the mode with only one life was called Mania. You have to finish the game on Hard mode to see the last form of the final boss just like in Contra 3.
Man, I love this game. In fact, it's still plugged into my Genesis in my guest bedroom. The soundtrack just came out on vinyl and I snagged it immediately. Konami used to make some really great stuff way back when.
I will say you did a good job reviewing it. And you probably have heard this already (and I am too lazy to go through each of the comments left) but sparkster returns in 2 days in "Rocket Knight". It isn't like Megaman 9 or 10 with graphics, but the gameplay seems to be as glorious as RKA and seems to add a bit more. Granted, it is more virtual console (Playstation network and X-box Live Arcade) but it is also on the PC as well (From Steam though). Still, check it out if you ever get a chance.
Very cool to give James the nod (unlike another certain reviewer). Urinatingtree did a peerless Awesome Possum review, but unfortunately after his account was wiped out nobody can find him. You really liked Shattered Solider???
If you look at the episode where he is making the egg float, Sparkster was telling Captain S to go with Becky's plan and call the head, while the large Jello-thing from Toejam & Earl said not to worry and get a chilidog.
The level with the fish is unfairly difficult. As well as the boss fight against the metal lava fish, and that stupid pig robot boss on the zepellin, especially when he starts raining debris on you a basically a completely random pattern that's impossible to dodge.
It's great to see someone give proprs to this game. Really one of the forgotten gems of the early 90's. Also, it's a shame Konami never fully adopted Sparkstar as a full Mascot, he really had every right to become the mascot despite the average sales.
Nice video capture, concise and to the point, while being very therough (did I misspell that, eh, watev). Also, be on the lookout for the Rocket Night remake on XBLA.
I got linked from a kotaku comment to this video. I had no idea what Rocket Knight Adventures was until now. You, HVGN, were a very grateful surprise for me. From your pronunciation of the games creator's namd and Konami's name I could hear a definite non-americanized accent of the pronunciations. PS: Get crackin' on that Sparkster review!
I remember playing a game called sparkster, I rented it from the video store as Sparkster, which is why for a while there I couldn't find anything about the game since its name was changed to rocket knight
he knows that, check his later videos, I think it is mentioned in either the sparkster videos or a splatterhouse one in which he mentions he got tons of mails about it when it came out. And yeah, it is pretty fun, I beat it. It has really great animations and gimmicks as well.
Ive watched a few HVGN's reviews and I have to say I like him. He gives credit where its due, he lays the game down well and is overall a good reviewer.
I still play this game every few months or so. The most depressing moment of my video game life was when I completed it on 'Very Hard mode' and it then told me to complete it on 'Crazy Hard mode'... complete misery.
Dude awesome video as always. You always surprise me with the games you review , and this one wasnt any different , i'll try to pick that game up if i find it.
Could never get past the bit not far from the end of the game when the giant robot chases you through a series of up and down corridors from some reason when I was a kid
great video man!! Don't be shy to try those Sparkster games in emulators!! I know you are a collector but you won't loose anything if you download , play them and review them!!
@TheNintendo101 He has a PS2 collection and by association a PS2 which plays PSuno titles, maybe there is a joke I'm missing, in which case sorry. Oh and by the way lophatjello, its good to see a positive reviewer of the obscure for a change, keep it up.
"He's a knight with a jet-pack. YOU CAN'T TOP THAT". I've never really thought about that, but those 2 sentences are pretty interesting. An Italian Plumber riding a dinosaur
the chili dogs joke is my favorite gag of season 1. i had to throw it in!
Don't forget the pepas lol
Shows a possum with an orbiting chicken, never mentions the chicken again.
:(
Let us never forget the mine-cart stage chicken.
what a classic game. one of the best soundtracks also
True, but what about other appearances of the game like character design wise he's no Sonic clone, its kinda more like Pulse Man, ya know Pulse Man right a GREAT Japanese Mega Drive exclusive but thats gameplay wise. I was also thinking the rocket thing looks kinda like a Pulseman thing.
Ah yeah, I see why you say that. Probably because both Sparkster and PulseMan do a tackle move that is used for in-stage progression and attacking enemies and bosses.

Back in those days everything was perfect! Especially when you uploaded a video! :D
I'm planning on doing the Intro Remake of this AWESOME game .
Hope you’re happy lop hat! I finally bought a copy today!
Rocket Knight would be perfect in Super Smash Bros. 4
His names Sparkster and yes! I would love to see him in smash 4
Juwan Campbell I know that his name is Sparkster but Rocket Knight is how he is becoming known now. Just like Rock is known as Mega Man.
He didn't get in
Dude, I watched this video when you first made it. You've come so fucking far. I'm proud of you, dude
Nice to see this still up here. This video was the reason I bought this game. Havent played it for years, so I'm not as good as I used to be. But I should probably break it out again.
Awesome review on one of my favorite games of all time. The section of Sparkster screams from 3:55 to 4:05 was hilarious. Great review, great editing.
...And 15 years later, after this classic video was made, Rocket Knight is back! Jack! In 2024! Who would've thought? 😎👍🍻💥🍻
Holy shit this is peak 2000s content right here
i don't really want to have a catch phrase. if i ever use that one again, it'll be because i've ran out of ideas.
Not sure why this is in my feed, I had no idea your channel was this old.
Looks like you’ve always been quality. Glad to be here.
I've still got this game, and its one fo my faves. still havent finished it.
A good example what genesis can do, great graphic, great controls, great sound
Love that brief sample of music from "The Guardian Legend." I wonder just how many caught that.
Just thought the same thing while rewatching this episode today! Tought to myself "Nice use of Guardian Legends music"
I'm posting my infinite approval before I even watch the video, that is actually how good your stuff is, keep up the great work.
@tyfra95 what?!?!? there's a new Rocket Knight?? Next you're gonna tell me Startropics is on Virtual Console and Little Nemo has been rereleased on DVD ... jeez some people ....
... little thing
difficulties were: easy, hard, very hard and crazy hard.
crazy hard was the "die in one hit"
fair enough then
Well whatever the hardest version is, I could never quite beat it. I got as far as I figured I could go without getting hit. The space level's asteroids and the spaceship boss's nonstop bullets were just too much.
In the USA these modes were called Children, Easy, Normal, and Hard respectively.
bitwize There were only three comments. Why didn't you read the comments?
Awesome Possum's title is actually an end game spoiler.
Dude, great video! It highlights my single favorite game for the genesis! Ever since the first day my Dad brought it home from the game rental place at random, 'cause he thought it "Looked like something that could be fun" I have loved that game. Always enjoy your videos, and glad to your working coming out more frequently.
Nice review, HVGN. Love the little Chemical Plant thrown in there at the end too.
Hi Derek. Not sure if I ever commented on this video or not and I am too lazy to go through all the millions of comments. But I wanted to tell you that the audio mixing on this video is fantastic. Your friend did an excellent job. And the video it self was good as well.
Sparkster is so adorable!
Oh, i got so happy that you mentioned my favourite game! Rocket Knight Adventures is purely my most favourite game of all time and it is soooo good! I own the Mega Drive/Genesis version of Sparkster. It is good but not as good as the original RKA.

Nice reference at the end,"Don't be negative." heh
Hi, Derek's mom!
Rocket Knight Adventures is one of my fav genesis games ever!!!
Great intro!
Great Episode!
Great everything!
Man I remember renting this one, man it was so much fun. Thank you for uploading this one.
Finally got your own unique theme music I see, great stuff :) And "Inspired by the work of James Rolfe" is cool. You might want to add "a.k.a. Angry Video Game Nerd" tho.
I didn't like the huge yellow text in the intro, doesn't look "professional" enough (I know it's all just for fun but... well..) maybe could work some on that :)
Otherwise it's a great review as always, keep it up :)
Oh and, hi Derek's mom!
I'm glad you have your own style now, I think it is better that way. Thanks for the review, man!
yet another brilliant and wonderful episode!! i'm a huge sparkster fan and i had no idea that the two sequels were made inhouse by two differnt teams. so not only was the episode great, i learned something!! now that's entertainment!!!!!
YES! One of my favorite games of all time for all systems. I'm glad you reviewed this one. Keep it up! You've got a good thing going.
You can def see that you put some effort in this :3
fantastic, but then again, your reviews are always great and worth the wait
I love that, "Dont Be negatives"
Nice video, long live to Rocket knight adventures.
We did Awesome Possum for our Top Ten series, the Top Ten Annoying Characters episode!
Nice review Derek, but it felt a lot lighter than normal.
well post it here man! I don't mind!
but what do you mean lighter? not enough detail?
Damn, finally. Thanks for your video I finally know what was that weird game which I played long ago (2:19). I was searching it forever!
And that's why I like watching video games reviews. I'm always learning something new.
12 years and I finally found a copy. I have looked for one in almost every single damn state
HVGN had Audio Quality way above most videos back then, even now it sounds Great & easy to listen to.
I'm really starting to like these reviews. Great production quality, great games and Mr. Alexander is great too! Just ace quality.
You know, like those Sonic imitators, I thought you were just trying to copy AVGN, but..... :) You really got a gimmick here.... You need MOAR exposure!... :D Best of Luck to ya, laddie..... ;)
I used to play this one all the time. I'm glad that eventually another game was made of this series.
It's fun to see references to games that are reviewed waaaaaaay later. In this case that's Contra: Shattered Soldier.
Thank you! I actually won the auction and I should get it the upcoming week, and for the spectacular price of 119 Swedish kronor plus shipping (which is about 14 US dollars)!
oh i know about it, and i don't remember liking it. i'd probably do shadowgate or deja vu before i do princess tomato, if ever.
My favorite game on the Genesis!
So cute :3
5:10 12 years later, Norm would make a genuine 20 minute Gaming Historian video on this game lmao
@BaTTLeFUnK1: I don't know if you've found out already, but it's a version of the Dr. Wily Stage 1 and 2 music from Megaman 2. Hope that helped.
-Ray
Thank you HVGN, the game is awesome. I will definitely be playing it for hours and days. Keep up the good work.
Awesome review again! Your work is constantly giving me new content to try out! Keep it up!
As well as the boss fight against the metal lava fish, and that stupid pig robot boss on the zepellin, especially when he starts raining debris on you a basically a completely random pattern that's impossible to dodge.
it makes me feel good that i still have this game and my old genesis with controllers.
God damn that was nostalgic.
Great review. I also really like the music in the intro.
I liked your style and I liked your writing. Consider myself a new subscriber.
Also, one question. Do you speak, Japanese? From your pronunciation of the games creator's namd and Konami's name I could hear a definite non-americanized accent of the pronunciations.
PS: Get crackin' on that Sparkster review!
I remember playing a game called sparkster, I rented it from the video store as Sparkster, which is why for a while there I couldn't find anything about the game since its name was changed to rocket knight
he knows that, check his later videos, I think it is mentioned in either the sparkster videos or a splatterhouse one in which he mentions he got tons of mails about it when it came out. And yeah, it is pretty fun, I beat it. It has really great animations and gimmicks as well.
you're a really good video editor dude!
thanks happy video game nerd for giveing these games what they need, i play a lot of underated games.
I remember watching this 15 years ago! Such a great review. Get ready for RKA: Resparked! ✨⚔️
Ive watched a few HVGN's reviews and I have to say I like him. He gives credit where its due, he lays the game down well and is overall a good reviewer.
You made me buy this game off ebay last night. Thanks, Derek!
He wasn't banned, he left on his own. but he is archived in several places including YT.
Sparkster was the first video game tattoo I've had done.
4 years later it still looks fucking cool.
The series is now 21 years old! :O
really good review, if urinating tree was still around you could have watched his awesome possum review, anyway well done again with the video :D
And your choice of credit music! Superb.
yeaaaaaaaaah i love your vids man, great to see in back in action!
it's also in the intro. i don't do things like that for absolutely no reason. *hint hint*
Could never get past the bit not far from the end of the game when the giant robot chases you through a series of up and down corridors from some reason when I was a kid
As someone who just beat this game on Hard (or in the original Japanese: Crazy Hard), worth it.
You're pretty funny and I love retro games and you give James his credit. You've just won one more subscription buddy.
great video man!!
I've player the Super NES version of Sparkster, trust me, it's awesome. Hell ,the music in the first level makes the game feel epic.
splatterhouse 2, sorry. RKA isn't on VC yet. but Splatterhouse 2 is awesome and you should download it!
