    I just caught the first brown trout in North America for the 2025 new year on a spoon. 2 a.m. style. Great vid!

    I had never used a spoon until today, and it was my first time trout fishing too. It worked out pretty well for me, I caught a handful of fish just straight retrieving it.

    I watch a lot of fishing videos on TH-cam, but yours are my favorites-full of common sense information that works, that I can easily digest and use, and you are entertaining too. PS) As a fellow "Mainah", I know that I can use your techniques immediately and they will deliver results.

    I used the Everett spoons this summer catching trout in Iowa. Spoons are so versatile. I have a huge spoon collection. Over spring break I used the trout worms and caught the shy elusive Guadalupe Bass down here in Texas.

      The driftless region in Iowa is a very hidden gem. We have mostly small feeder creeks and streams but there are some good fish to be had if you put the work in! 🎣

    Could I use a snap swivel instead of a barrel swivel at the spoon? That would make switching out spoons so easy.

      You can. I like to tie right to the spoon. That way you’re checking your knot every so often and snipping off a few inches of bad line. I don’t like the snaps, they just add to the profile of the spoon of your trying to make it a more natural presentation.

    I fish in Ventura County California. Mostly in the ocean but sometimes in freshwater for catfish or bass or panfish. I love jigging spoons or other things while my kayak drifts. I looked at your website and before I knew what I was doing I bought 4 spoons. I even grabbed a 1/4 glow in the dark spoon for the ocean...... That will be interesting, I can charge it on my kayak from the sun easily, then run it on a Carolina style rig for trolling. If the glowing thing works it will catch some very strange fish...... I love being creative and using lures in strange ways. Thanks for the video and my newest spoons.

    I think you put your hooks on backwards, well compared to how I do it yours are backwards, spoons travel with the paint facing down unless they are spinning, having your hooks so the tip faces up gives you better chances of skimming over logs/weeds and other snags.

      Slow enough to keep the spoon rocking back and forth and off the bottom. If it rises too high in the water, pause it or jerk and pause it so it drops down a little. Sometimes reel reel reel pause works well. If your spoon is turning over too much, add an inch of worm or power bait to the center hook; this will help lower the oscillation slightly. Plus, tipping a spoon makes them more effective.

      All rods don’t feel the same so you’ll want to experiment. One company’s light rod might feel like a medium rod. I have a 7ft rod that’s supposed to be medium fast and feels like a medium light that works good for spoons and spinners. Agree w him on the rod length. 7ft-7ft2 is sweet spot for me as well. • @mainetroutwhisperer
      @mainetroutwhisperer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the longer rods for loading up on the fish. The shorter rods seem yo have less of a parabolic bend to them or just turn to the stiffer but section too quick. The longer rods (depending on action) can load up nicer and keep the fish pinned especially with single hooks.

  • @extorter

    I've never thought about switching the trebles over to single hooks. What is the benefit of this? Easier to release the fish without causing as much damage?
    Also, what size are the single hooks and what are those little rings called that the barrel swivels attach to?

    Aren't some spoons like Thomas Buoyants specifically intended to wobble back and forth instead of spinning? I put swivels on my Buoyants and it just killed the action. Then I removed the swivels, tied direct and they wobbled fine with no line twist.

    • @mainetroutwhisperer
      @mainetroutwhisperer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it depends. If you’re just doing a straight retrieve. I fish mine pretty aggressively with pops and different kinds of retrieves. Spoons aren’t that bad, but if you fish them all day long, you’ll probably get some twists. You can always put a swivel 1-2ft above the spoon so you can tie directly to the spoon still.

    I want a scientific study on the effectiveness of swivels. I fished spinners for years with all kinds of swivels and snap swivels and never saw a difference in line twist. Another thing you want to do on that single hook is sharpen it. Dull hooks miss fish. Sharp hooks catch fish you may have missed.

    • @FishStalker777
      @FishStalker777 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What kind of swivels do you use? Cheap ones don’t spin very well so you’ll still get line twist, but better quality ones definitely make a big difference for line twist. Ball bearing swivels spin the best but are a little heavy for using straight to a spoon

    I'm outdoorsy but I'm much better at small game hunting than fishing. I'm a poorly performing fisherman and I'm working on it. I only have decent luck deep in the wilderness in lakes with pistol pete flies. I once watched a guy who claimed to pull up to 30 trout in an hour off this. Mark Baca. I thought he was exaggerating cause people do but I timed him. I swear that almost every cast was a hook. He caught 27 trout at monastery lake in Pecos,NM. He had to keep throwing trout back because I believe at the time it was a limit of 5. All this in an hour. Our politics were way too different though to be friends. Btw that was all in one hour!! I remember driving back to his place to fry the fish and all the while I was in a surreal state marveling at the phenomenon I just witnessed. People at the lake were in AWE! He got alot of hate. Some guy was saying he should leave fish for the kids but at any time he only had 5 in the stringer basket .He used the larger green pistol petes with a mealworm in the hook on the leader and an eagle claw bubble he filled with water on the main line. It was the mid size one and he filled it all the way. I'm trying to learn jigs, softbaits, spoons,spinners etc. because what if you don't have pistol petes?! My specialty is navigation. I'm a master there especially celestial navigation

    • @thevenin2
      @thevenin2 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Pistol Petes will slay, but it was the meal worm that caught so many fish. He could have had that on just a hook and caught as many.
