When I was a kid in the 50s a red and white daredevil was 25 cents and all I could afford. Would tie a fly about two feet above it and could catch fish on both.
I didnt know you were a pro staffer for rha! Guess i should watch what i say😂 I’m so excited to see how these spoons work when the season opens up… green valley was just a teaser to get me hooked! Never caught that many trout in one day in my life!!!!
I have 4 Phenix rods specially for trout. I cannot stress enough how my hookup ratio has gone up since I’ve upgraded to a premium brand of rod. Especially when I started using braid. Great video.
Excellent video! Just subscribed from Australia where spoon fishing for trout is seeing somewhat of a revival. Your tips should greatly assist me. Thanks again, Frank
Very good video, well done with out long boring intro. The information is very helpful ,just received my spoons from RhA. I will check the Phoenix rods. Excellent video.thanks
Thanks for watching 🙏. I just rewatched that video and was surprised at how down my delivery was. It seemed like i just woke up and then I remembered that i had covid when i made that video haha luckily I didn’t have a bad case of it but I decided to do that video then anyway
What an incredible video! Thank you so much for putting this together. I've been catching winter cutthroats up here in Washington State lakes using Kastmasters and I'm eager to learn more about other spoons.
I concur sir...them RHA spoons have worked well for me in the lakes we fish down here, the eastern sierras, and up north in the Truckee river. I definitely recommend them too!!
Another video with years of knowledge being shared! Every little bit helps. I'm at the budget stage right now spending $50-100 per spinner rod and reel combos. I've always wondered if the budget set ups are really that much different than more expensive ones. I used to live right by Phenix rods and never knew they made too notch rods 😂 . Now I see their rods everywhere.
Most of my spinning set ups are around $100 or less as well and work great. But if you start getting real into working lures its a night and day difference from my other rods. I now have 4 different phenix rods that I use for different fishing techniques and I love em. Just dont love the price tag haha
This is a tremendous video. I'm an avid trout fisherman in my 70s, and small spoons are the fishing method I most often use. I use Phenix Elixir and Mirage rods. I agree with all of your insights. I attach lures to clips sometimes, but I prefer a split ring rather than a clip. I'm less apt to get a little bit of grass on the split ring. I retrieve slightly differently, but your method will be effective. Thanks very much for this great video.
Thanks for taking the time to put these videos together. This was very informative since I'm now starting to fish spoons and jigs a lot more often. Still haven't been very successful but things may change after this video. Keep them coming boss man..
Just keep it up. I was at DVL yesterday and got the skunk. Not even a bite haha. In fact my last 3 trips to lakes I caught like 3 dinks total. Thats just fishin sometimes. The more your out there youll eventually get into some 🤘
Right on! That sounds like a great set up. Always run gear that’s comfortable to you and your confident with. It really helps on those days that the fish won’t cooperate 🤘
Hey Rob Awesome Video A+. I just troll a fly around and catch up to 10lb. Rainbows at the local stocker lake. Now that I have figured that out I'm going to run Spinning gear on one rod. I like spoons alot as I have Commercial Salmon fished where Spoons are an essential tool catching awesome Salmon. Anyways I need a new challenge and was given and bought much spinning gear in the last year. Just about everything on clearance, old stock, garage sale Penny's on the dollar. So far the fly still has caught the biggest trout but some days the lures out fish the fly. I've yet to catch a trout on a spoon but after watching this video. Like the barrel swivels I've put them on a bunch of Flatfish with single hooks. You'll find swivels on the big Tomic Salmon plugs that Commercial Salmon Fisherman use.
Another great video Rob, especially the in depth part on retrieving. I have just recently started using small JDM spoons like the Forrest MIU and the RHA looks comparable and much easier to buy here in the US. I'm also using the Elixr with a Vanford and love the sensitivity, especially paired with Phenix high viz braid. Hope to see you next week at the derby at Gregory. All the best, Jared
Great video as always, very informative. may i ask what fishing line you recoment, because i want to try braid line 12-15lb direct to the lure.do you think it will spook the fish? thank you keep up with great vids!!
You can use braid straight to the spoon as long as its not super bright colored. The darker colored braids wont be seen as the spoon is moving and they dont have time to inspect it. Im curious why your going 12-15lb unless your going for something other than trout. For trout I use 4lb Phenix Iron Feather Braid. If you’re gonna stick with 12-15lb I recommend Daiwa J Braid. Really good line for my heavier applications. Thats what I use for the monster lahontan cuttys at pyramid lake NV. For that I use 8 & 10lb test.
Thanks, I appreciate it. I did in the past just experimenting. I put treble hooks on some for a bit but ended up not liking it so I switched back to the single hooks.
Thank you for making and sharing videos. Being a begginer/novice angler (just started a few months ago), I find this very helpful and encouraging. As a begginer , I find fishing as a contact sport lately . Very crowded in local parks and no etiquette with a few anglers. I do have a question regarding the Elixir Rods, if a 9 feet will make a difference . I saw an angler with one but haven’t get a chance to inquire. Liking Willow.
Im real big on 8’ rods but thats just me. A friend of mine has a 9’ Elixer and he loves it. I don’t believe either size is better or makes a difference its just your personal preference
Rob ... on those RHA spoons I see u put a swivel?... do u like them better that way... I recently ordered some and can't wait to use them at Pyramid...
On the 3 and 4g I use swivels but the jury is still out if that really makes a difference. Ive caught and lost lots of fish both ways. On the bigger spoons for pyramid 2 1/4 & 2 7/8 spoons I haven’t used swivels at all yet. Id say put swivels on a couple and see how you like it 🤘
Great channel subscribed a day or 2 ago. Is there a way of reducing or avoiding line twists with Rooster-tails? We used to troll them behind small boats at Big Bear and the old Anaheim Lake. I remember the insane amount of twist every time the spinner was brought in. Anything you can suggest that might help? Maybe a tiny "ball-bearing" swivel attached directly to the Rooster-tail? --- If you've answered this in another video, rather than wasting your time, just let me know. Thank you!
No worries. Best thing Ive found for that are chain swivels. You just tie them in line a few feet up from your spinner and it will prevent all that line twist. I use them alot trolling deep water at Tahoe for mackinaw. Heres a link to give you an idea of what they look like: Ball Chain Number 6 Fishing... www.amazon.com/dp/B017BSSNDE?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Thanks for the quick reply! Love your videos. BY FAR the best channel/videos out there for trout. I have never found the amount of detail you go into or the variety of topics you cover in another channel. Really appreciate you!
I have a follow up question. I have an 8’ Phenix Dragonfly and I am picking up a 7’7” Phenix Mirage this weekend. The dragonfly is a fast action and the Mirage is a moderate. My original plan was to use the Dragonfly for mini jigs while using the Mirage for spoons/spinners. Based on this video would you recommend the opposite?
Thanks I really appreciate it 🙏. Spoons work best in clearer water. So when the water is clear up there and the guys are fishing alot of mini jigs instead of dropshot the spoons should work real well.
Not on the RHA’s but I have on other spoons like Thomas Buoyant’s. With the split rings its easy to change the hooks out to whatever you prefer. Either will work fine 🤘
I bought some 3g ones last week. I didn't see a place on the website to enter the discount code, so I guess it expired. Love your stuff.@@SeaSpankerOutdoors
dude i noticed that at certain points of the video your sound like tom hanks! Not like woody or forrest but like apollo 13 tom hanks 👍 You can hear it when you talk about spoon colors and trout anatomy 😃👍
Ooops, you forgot to put a red & white Dare Devil in you opening line-up of spoons. Make your own spoon by going to Good Will and get some silverware spoons. Cut the handle off and drill a hole at each end.
You ever try 2lb Maxima Evergreen? Strong strong stuff and gets bit constantly. I use 4lb maxima for throwing spoons and lures and 2lb for bait and wait. Those fluorocarbon lines don't stretch and are less forgiving on lesser gear with drags that aren't smooth as silk like those sweet stradics you got. My drop shot rig has fluoro leader on it hooked to 8lb braid i can feel a fish fart with that setup. Good stuff Rob I'm always checking in to see what you got going on.
Thats good to know. I’ll definitely have to try that Maxima. Thats my plan this season with my dropshot rod. Im thinking of trying the 5lb iron feather braid with a fluoro leader. That stuff casts really well.
Its easier on the fish and its easier overall to deal with than a large treble. Large treble hooks work great on the spoons as well it just comes down to personal preference 🤘
ANOTHER great video!!! No BS, no stupid jokes, well prepared, no gimmicks. Just great info!!! Thanks man!
Thanks Hector. I appreciate the feedback. Definitely more to come 🤘

Great vid Rob. Exactly what i needed to know. Going up to big bear in a week or so. Middle of the week. Slip bob and spoon.

Outstanding!!! Socal trout season is almost here 🤘
Thanks for the tips.
Happy to help!
Watching this video again just saved me a lot of time after missing a trout on the drop shot
I’ve definitely had those days where the only thing that would work for me was the RHA spoons 🤘
@@SeaSpankerOutdoors maybe that’s my problem I don’t wanna put down the drop shot but as of lately I can’t find them anywhere

When you use braid do you make it where you cast the knot when it’s a couple feet out of the last eye or do you cast it through all the eyes

Is 1/3 oz spoon too big for casting a spoon for big rainbows?
I guess it depends on how big the trout are. I know Luke has been having success with 3” spoons at Pyramid with those big cuttys
bros arms are so colorful he could turn them fishing lures 😂.
LOL
does cigarette, vape. or marijuana smoke affect the lures, lines, bait etc?
