  • Preparations are complete. Finally we begin America’s Great Loop. Although we will not be completing the entire route, we are doing the most committing passages through the Erie Canal into the Great Lakes, and down the mighty rivers to the Gulf of Mexico.
    In this series we will answer all the relevant questions about America’s great loop. Also we will give you all the tips, tricks and techniques we learnt along the way.

    ABOUT US:
    Jupiter² was built in the Philippines by an Australian designer for Jamie. During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time.
    Hopefully some inspiration to "Quit Job and Go Sailing".

    You do not see many Cats on the Great Lakes, there is no place to pull them out if you need to. They are also not designed to handle the steep waves very well ( a 6 footer on Lake Michigan is much different than a 6 footer on the open seas). Glad you had a fun voyage!

    Great! That's also our plan in the future. What is your air draft with and without the mast? What is the minimum bridge clearance on the loop?

    • @SailingLifeonJupiter
      @SailingLifeonJupiter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool... Were 73' mast up, and 13.5' mast down... You'll need to pass under 15.5' bridge if you do the entire Erie, otherwise you can go up the Oswego where and then 17' will be enough.
      There's a 13.5' bridge in downtown Chicago, but you can bypass it.

    Yep I reckon your right those buoys are sensors for the nuke plant temperature, radiation etc.
    Looks like that Dredge didnt wind its ropes out enough (I drive one here in Oz) and you collected its winch cable, not very professional effort by the crew, that would have caused any other boat a lot of mischief.

      @@SailingLifeonJupiter Yep if it was a solid hit and you felt a type of twang or metalic reverbaration id say its a Dredge rope, ours at the mine uses 44 mm steel cables, not something you want falling on you, they are a bastard to change out when they break.

    Terrific sailing. I'm curious to know: What are the maximum hull widths on the Great Loop? And Is it possible to re-step the mast at the end of the Erie Canal, or after you pass through the Welland Canal (to pass Niagara Falls)? And would this be a good option?

    • @SailingLifeonJupiter
      @SailingLifeonJupiter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Will…no real beam limits….but I do remember, on a narrow river, being thankful that we weren’t twice as wide….if you venture into Canada on the Trent-Severn canal there is a limit of about 23ft.
      Yes you can raise the mast in Tonawanda/Buffalo and sail the lakes…possibly a limit of 65’ due to bridges….and then drop again in Chicago.
      This obviously doubles the cost of the mast work!
