  • The Outremer 52 catamaran is a nearly perfect blend of comfort and performance. We love almost everything about it! DID WE FIND OUR NEXT BOAT?? As you'll see, there are two MAJOR problems!
    Our friends Holly and Stèphane recently took possession of their new Outremer 52 called AWEN and invited us along for a few days of sailing and relaxation. You can follow their adventures on TH-cam channel - / @sailingawen .

    I love this video. I would like to expand on "sail trim being more trouble than its worth". On a day sail, maybe. On a passage .... you got nothing but time, and getting an extra knot of performance (sometimes much more) is worth it. Not to mention - learning about sail trim and really understanding what is going on will make you a better, safer sailer.

    When I saw the headline, I knew the answers to both - cost and lead time. Bummer. The 3D sheeting looks AMAZING. When you showed it on the ORC, it looked complicated because it wasn't actually attached to anything. Now seeing it in action, it makes so much sense. Getting rid of traditional genoa tracks would be fantastic. Major drawback is that they will have to replaced where a track lasts virtually forever. I've been racing on a boat with those North 3Di sails and they are incredible. Great video as always - thanks guys!

    Can totally understand why you fell in love with the 52' - Awen is one BEAUTIFUL boat ! And so lovely that you were able to share time on a friends (early Patreons) craft - rather than a manufacturers demo one. I just hope that Outremer are able to work something out with you - to help with the cost and lead time, in return for being possible brand ambassadors...? 🤞 Anyway, it is just great to see you both out on the water again. Enjoy !

    Looks like Outremer knocked it out of the park with the 52. Such a great boat with a balanced design throughout. Comfort, speed and reliability all in a great looking package, what more can one ask for?. Still a bit tight for me on the inside but it looks extremely well built and must be fast. Wishing you a similarly great boat to sail and live on in the near future. Fantastic episode!

    When I started sailing in dinghies then oved up to bigger boats it was frustrating sailing cruisers or even cruiser racers. Moving to performance boats be they monohulls or cats it really is a revaluation. The controls are designed to be easy to use, to give many adjustments to get the right sail shape and you can really feel the changes as you trim and with great sails you can see the shape of the sails much better a d what the controls are doing to that shape. Personally I think you learn much more in a performance boat, about sail trim and how this affects your speed. I hope you can find a cat that will give you the obvious enjoyment that sailing the Outremer 52 did. Andy UK

    NICE. Nick you missed the obvious, the Black sails. I had to look it up, but I was surprised at all the advantages, aside from the cool look. Higher speeds, glare reduction, durability, weight, strength ( carbon) UV protection?
    BTW, aside from U2, my favourite sailing channel is Cat Great Circle. They have new Outremer 55 and are currently sailing around the world on the Outremer rally. Maybe you can join them on a Leg, as crew.

      $1.7 million and I can't get a proper bed. Reminds me of crawling into a V berth. At my age, a little ease of access. For example forward raised bed with side access on a gunboat . Aside from that it's fine.

    Hi guys. It is an amazing boat but then for the price and the wait, it better be. So I had an idea that maybe you would consider something other than a Outremer. Sometimes our consciousness gets fixated on one idea when there are others that get to the same goal just as well. Just suggesting gently and respectfully because I am very impressed by you. Really like the halyard lines positioned separately. This is done often in other designs, but Outremer has figured out how to get them in close proximity to the Helm, yet out of the way. Asymmetrical cockpit is really sweet as well. But my biggest takeaway is learning of 3D Sheeting. I made a barber hauler for our previous cat (Helia 44), but never occurred to me that something could be setup permanently, and just bypass the tracks all together. Going to think about this for our Leopard 42. Do they have separate clutches for those two lines? And I guess you just used both winches; one for the working jib sheet and one for the 3D Sheet?? Also, I can't exactly tell where they positioned the blocks on the coachroof, port and starboard. Are they positioned somewhere along the placement of where traditional tracks would be found? Sorry for peppering so many questions, but this is super cool. You need this boat. But you'll need to brush up on your French. Remember, it's Bob, not Bob. Or is it Bub? 🤣

The addition of CF where it matters. Outremer knows how to build the design and, can’t believe I am saying this, keep the price in line.
    But how can anyone put a cooktop in the back corner of the counter top? And French is the home of cuisine. For the love of cooking, am I seeing this on a French boat?😂 I may need to ask AWEN as they seem to enjoy cuisine as well.

    Hey, what did Nick get out as? he was a pilot right? (does he ever miss flying? or does the sailing fill that void) - we have have several years of obligations left (likely going for 23 years) - we're doing our calculations to estimate how our pension takes care of daily and monthly... we're putting back long term to go sailing and make a purchase... instead of the typical VA loan and 30 year house mortgage type thing. I really appreciate the tone of your channel compared to many of the others that are overtly acting and emotional, drama, etc. However many of the manufacturers simply don't have great videos and it's channels like yours that we comb through to see the details and hear the perspectives, the subtle details and comparisons.. such as the sail trim was really key. so far the this boat Outremer 52, Seawind 1190 Sport (with major modifications), and Rapido 50 are our contenders...

      Get out as? Get out of the rat race? I am a meteorologist. I used to work on TV, many many years ago. Yes, I’m a pilot. I do love flying, but sailing and flying….need a trust fund to do both. If we don’t end up buying another boat, you can bet we will buy a plane. Appreciate the kind comments about the videos. We really dig filling in the blanks for folks who are game to come out here and do it. It’s a great lifestyle and there’s endless opportunity to learn….and that’s how these little “lessons” come about. Learned about 3d sheeting from James on the ORC then Stephane on the 52 and thought….hey, awesome idea, solves a big problem we’ve had…so I bet others out there would want to learn as well. So, it’s all about passing along the knowledge when there’s an opportunity. Cheers! And….don’t wait forever to come out and do this….

      @@TheOKellys ahh, I'm sorry I thought you were a pilot in the Navy lol. Awesome insight, we certainly want to, who knows maybe down the road we (figuratively) bump into each other lol! current obligations have us land locked for right now. your advice is heartfelt though, so we will go out on coastal trips asap! (plan is to eventually retire into blue water liveaboard, circumnavigate) *gave y'all a sub -not something I really do but I like y'alls vibe and channel tone.

    C’est tres bien! The happiness abounds in the content and comments! Thanks again for brightening my life, seriously.
    Given your rough and ready proclivities, would you two be happy with such a luxurious and spectacularly performing cat? Besides, that great room space could result in an uncontainable explosion of freedom, ne serait-ce pas? (my sarcasm runs deeeep)
    One concern beyond €s and backlog, the vertical front windows…will they survive a large wave? I know Nick’s weather savvy…but merde happens.

    • @TheOKellys
      @TheOKellys  ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn’t worry about front windows. Those tramps are pretty much open, so you aren’t going to ship much of a sea from ahead. The great room? Lol. Je ne sais pas!
      Would we be happy on that boat? Lol. For real….Lol.
      We can always dream, right? Who the heck knows. The right thing will happen for us boat-wise.
      Glad to have you along for the ride!

    I know this might be a silly question...and is intended with humor... I was looking at Gunboats (updated) website and the new 70'er - they mention the sail plan as been updated for "Short Handed Crew"...What would Gunboat's definition of Short Handed be? 4 people or a couple? LOL. Money no object, would you go for the new 70' Gunboat?

    • @TheOKellys
      @TheOKellys  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Short handed on a GB70? Probably two crew. Insurance might require three. Not sure honestly...not a lot of experience in this realm. If money were no object....probably something in the mid-50ft range. If you get much larger, you really need to have crew or a captain...it's a lot of boat to keep up with for a couple. Would it be a Gunboat? Sure! I like their old 57 with the swing boards. Cool boat.

    Ahh the Dream ! At 16t loaded up you can have everything you would want. But would you be confident at performance speeds and the load stresses over time?

    Curious as to how you tack the large forward most Genoa around the jib headstay?

    • @TheOKellys
      @TheOKellys  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The gennaker? Best to roll it up to tack or gybe. If it were super light air you can pull through, but why risk the sail is our thinking.
