Taste Testing The Best and Worst Instant Coffee

Normally, we're very particular about our coffee. But when it comes to ultralight backpacking and long road trips, we sometimes resort to instant. Gross, I know. But we decided to try and figure out which ones were the least gross so you don't have to. You're welcome. Here are four of the most readily available instant coffees, taste tested by yours truly, former baristas and self-proclaimed coffee addicts.

This is a tad late on the video, but rather than using instant, I carry an MSR MugMate with me when I'm out in the world. I've had the same one since the 90's and it's still going strong. If you get your ratios right it tastes similar to a french press and there's zero waste past the grounds. It can be used for tea as well, or a pre-filter for treating water with a lot of grit.
