Cafe Bustello is my go-to brand so far. I also like to mix a coffee with the Land O Lakes hot chocolate or french vanilla packets.

@@RVAHikerGirl another option I like but haven't used for backpacking yet is a pour over Medaglia doro regular coffee,, not the instant. On my rv trips I've been using this and love it. The grains are cut so fine it's almost like a powder. I've been liking it so much that I've been thinking about getting the Vargo titanium pour over bracket for coffee. Their instant expresso is good too if you can find it at the store. That's actually my fav over the cafe bustello if I can find it. Wally world by my house used to sell it in small glass jars and I'd just transfer it into a ziplock bag
I'm UK based and best I've tried over here is Nescafe Azera Americano, it's half decent but it's also important to note for people used to brewing their own coffee that instant doesn't tend to have the same caffeine kick as real coffee, as most instant coffees don't have as high a caffeine content.

I mix a packet of folgers instant and a Trader Joe's packet w/creamer & sweetener. That combo makes a great cup of joe for me. In hot weather, I will mix a packet of Breakfast Essentials and a folgers and shake it in cold water and drink it. Pretty tasty. Great video as always!
That's a smart idea, John. I have mixed Starbucks Via with Carnation Instant Breakfast during the warmer months and drinking it a room temp so I didn't have to fire up my stove. It mixes up well. Appreciate you checking this one out. ~RVA~

Yes I agree with you. I have 1 of the GSI coffee filters, but I don't really care for having to clean it out, especially when backpacking when it uses precious water that I should be drinking, rather than wasting. (water sources can be scare in the summer months) Some ppl dont like the waste of the packaging, but you have to have a balance. That chai is killer! I thought it was so interesting because that one has both tea and coffee. Give it a try and let me know how you like it. ~RVA~

I am not a coffee snob either. I'm not picky about my coffee or my wine, lol! I am really impressed with Bustelo and its low price per cup. COFFEE! For backpacking I like Starbucks Via first and Alpine Start second. The issue I have with Alpine Start is the package is more apt to absorb some moisture than the package Via comes in. Also, I've found that if I mix instant coffee with a spoonful or two of cool water before adding hot water the taste is slightly better.

COFFEE! COFFEE!! COFFEE!!! Most of these I've never heard of. We use Folgers all the time on trail but I've also done the Starbucks VIA. Never used Cafe Bustelo but heard lots about it. I'd love to try the Alpine Start Dirty Chai--I'm a Chai fan!

COFFEE! I call it Survival Juice! I love me some coffee! I've been thinking about doing something like this, too- if nothing else just for fun! I have a couple of coffees at home I haven't yet tried, but I'd be curious to try my favorites in a blind test. I'm with you on the pre-creamered TJ's stuff- WAY too sweet for me. I'll have to try this CS Coffee! Good to know the pour-over was the worst one! I've been hesitant to do a pour-over because I didn't want to have to haul it out. My pack is always heavy enough as it is!
The C.S. one is 100% compostable. So thats nice. Def try that one. Alpine Start is tasty too. Thanks for checking this one out.

COFFEE! I switched to all instant at home a couple years ago. I've found that my favorite is the cheap Aldi brand instant coffee! It doesn't come in single packets (which I don't mind, less waste overall)..... I put some in a reusable container to carry with me and scoop out a spoonful as needed lol I only drink mine with Truvia/stevia or black! Coffee is excellent for the liver as I've just recently found out!
I haven't tried that one. The C.S. coffee is in a 100% compostable packaging so no waste. But I do that too sometimes, especially if I am out before a trip. I must have 1 healthy liver then! ha ha! ~RVA~

Great video! We are picky with our coffee - but have found that some of the instant is not bad. We love the Kuju and Starbucks. The Folgers is the best economic one in our opinion.

I purchased Folgers last year for camping because it had both regular and decaf. Due to heart issues I drink a mix of 1/3 regular & 2/3 decaf. It wasn't fabulous. I'll have to buy one of the others to mix with my decaf. If I'm not calling it coffee, I call it "cafe au lait" . I do like cream & sweetener. :)
Yeah, I would only drink Folgers if I had to and there was nothing else. There are so many better ones, like Cafe Bustelo is even cheaper. Let me know if you do try another one and how you like it. ~RVA~
COFFEE! When it comes to Kuju I ran into the same problem with it wanting to fall and actually caught it on film. I did later find out that they have a recommendation on how to prevent that, but of course it is not a part of the instructions on the bag. Typically I just call it coffee, however I normally scream it in a very excited way ;) Thanks to Snackbox, I recently tried Cafe Bustello and for the price it is surprisingly good and I have been able to find it in all of my local grocery stores. I have been wanting to check out CS ever since I saw it in one of your videos so even if I don't win I will have to remember to go place an order and check it out! Thanks for being awesome!
I just followed the directions on the packaging. But tried to put some creases in the cardboard stays to try to keep it on. It was falling before I ever put water in and was holding it while I was adding the water and it fell again and the grounds went all into the coffee. A big mess later and 3 times filtering it. Yes, you can't let the price fool you with Bustelo, it's a good dark roast coffee. Best Luck to you, I hope you get to try some of these. ~RVA~

I think my reply to you disappeared. Hopefully, this time it goes through. LOL! I drink decaf sometimes too. Usually in the afternoon when I want a coffee later in the day. Caffeine keeps me awake if drink it after 4pm.

Yep, Starbucks has always been my go to coffee. Buts its nice to have some others ones to try. Try Cafe Bustelo if you like a rich full flavored coffee. Really impressed at the cost vs taste with that one. ~RVA~

COFFEE! I'm really partial to Fair Trade COFFEE! especially from Equal Exchange and SERRV International. Brew it up over the fire or on the Coleman stove in an old aluminum percolator, pour it in a tin cup when it's done perking and, as you well know, you've got some fine-tasting COFFEE! I'm sure that is really good. I'm a backpacker so I have just incorporated my backpacking gear/coffee over to my camping coffee. I haven't seen a percolater since I was a little girl at my grandmas house. I bet just making it that way, makes it taste even better. ~RVA~

I love my coffee on the trail and never want to be without it- BUT some of these and others I’ve tried are TOO darn expensive! I usually bring ground a gsi filter. I may try CS just to see… COFFEE!

This was fun, almost like a wine tasting event LOL only better cause with coffee. Made me want coffee real bad, I love my morning coffee too. I only put some milk into it. Yes, I definitely like strong coffee too. I haven't heard of the winner, I will check that out. Sounds really good. Never heard of 2nd place either, goes to show you. I had bustello and like it. And very affordable. We got pour over a few times on the way to Michigan at a Orchard and they totally screwed that up, way too weak. My favorite at home is a Raspberry Chocolate. I use Cafe Bustelo at home, pour over. It ranks there with Black Rifle in my opinion. I'm planning on giving away all of my instant coffee to the next through hiker I see, I haven't found any that I like. Regarding the Kuju coffee, I love the filter, not the coffee. I buy those filters on Amazon. I've made a lot of coffee with them, probably 1,000+ cups. I've never had a spill. Plus I get to bring my favorite coffees on trail. Great video as always!
Yes I like Bustelo. I bought a big can of it when the grocery store was out of my brand. And I like it. It's definitely more robust than most. I have a GSI reusable coffee filter that use and just scoop out coffee from home to talk with me. But sometimes when I am backpacking I don't want to waste my water to clean it out, especially this time the year when a lot of water sources are drying up. What do you do for camping or hiking, since you can't take your Keurig with you? Does Dunkin make instant? I drank Dunkin at home for years. Seatlles Best too.
COFFEE: My all time favorite instant coffee, and it might be because I'm half Scottish and a cheapskate, is the Clover Valley Dollar General brand...In so far as I'm also half Irish I prefer a good perked coffee with my Irish Whiskey in my legendary Irish coffee..

The coffee looks good, but on the trail I only drink soup or tea. Mushroom soup in particular is my best friend on the trail.😃

After 7 cups of coffee later in the afternoon, I hope you were OK. Liked this video alot. I'd love to try the CS coffee, don't think it's in Canada. We use a lot of Starbucks Via here but sometimes I have Nescafe Sweet and Creamy (2-in-1) but it tastes more like hot chocolate.

I love the Alpine start and Starbucks Via ... They are easier to find here too.... Folgers is the cheapest everywhere . I never seen the C.S before but i'll check it out.
Cafe Bustelo is right behind Folgers only by a few pennies. Def try that one if you see it. Little yellow box the same size as Folgers but CS Coffee is killer!

I’m a long distance backpacker as well so pack weight is an issue for long miles so instant is the lightest way to drink coffee out there. And that has carried over to camping. Appreciate you checking out this video though! Coffee rocks! ~RVA~
@@RVAHikerGirl I hear ya. Done my fair share of distance hikes over the years. Via's & Folgers where usually my go to's back in the days. Although, last year in South Dakota while hiking the Centennial trail. I became a fan of Black Rifles Coffee steep bags. With that said, I'd definitely like to try your top three picks sometime.

Have you ever tried Medaglia D'Oro instant espresso coffee? It's a really smooth COFFEE! I haven't found it in individual packets but I just pour some into a Ziploc sandwich bag for backpacking. I drink it daily at home. Sooo tasty. I have found a lot of the instants to be somewhat bitter, but not this one. I do use creamer and Stevia in my coffee... can't drink it black. On the trail I actually add it to my Carnation instant breakfast just to keep me from having caffeine withdrawal headaches. Pretty tasty.
No I haven't tried that one. Where do you get it from? I have mixed carnation with Starbucks Via when I am backpacking with room temp water. In the summer I hate drinking or eating hot food when I am hot already. That works for me well. Good Luck! !RVA!
@@RVAHikerGirl I used to get it from Walmart but haven't found it there in a while. I've started ordering from Amazon. I buy it by the case (12 jars) since I drink it daily. Prices fluctuate a lot so I watch for reductions and grab it. Might can be purchased in other stores, just not that many where I live.
When I'm backpacking I don't take the time in the morning to cook anything. Just mix everything, guzzle and go.
Folgers all the way when long distance backpacking. Percolator when car camping or short backpacking trips. My hubby got these bags from Amazon and he puts grounds in them and it works like a teabag. But then you have to pack out those grounds, and ounces equal pounds! And I'm like yo...coffee cutoff is 5-6 PM or I'm up all night.
Have you tried Cafe Bustelo? It's right next to Folgers in the g store. You are right to ounces lead to pounds. I have a bad habit of making dehydrated meals and not eating them because I don't like eating hot food when I am hot. That weight adds up over several days and gets heavy. ~RVA~

You're gonna be pretty wired after 7 cups of coffee! Haven't tried many of the instant coffees, but do enjoy a good cuppa. the kuju coffee, although not familiar with it, we have several in that style at the house. My stepdaughter used to live in Japan, and she sent us a lot of their coffees, seems they were all like that. Good video! enjoyed.

That one was my go to as well for a long time at camp and one trail.
Every instant coffee I've ever tasted was super gross until I tried a Vietnamese brand called G7. You can find it in any Asian grocery store. I could literally drink it every day if it didn't cost more than bricks of coffee, plus I'm not a fan of single packed items and all the trash. It's definitely good for emergency/outdoor uses though!
Give C.S. Coffee a shot, the packaging is actually 100% composable so it's 0 waste. I have never heard of G7 but I would definitely love to try it Dustin. Thanks for checking out this video! ~RVA~
