What do you think of Glenn Close performance in Dangerous Liaisons? And Fatal Attraction? I would give the oscars that year for her. Cher was amazing in Moonstruck, but not on Glenn's level. Jodie was good, but really far below Close in DL.
I have to put it out there. I think Glenn Close's performance in 'The Wife" is the best female performance of all time. She should have 4 awards as of now.
@victorrodrigueesoficial I thought Close would win for DL because she was not only excellent, but she had a lot of momentum at that time (though I probably still would have voted for Foster). Love Cher, but not for that film (Mask, definitely).
For Broadway, one org, maybe the Outer or Outer Outer Critics, an actor can only win once. After that, they will mention good performances, with no award.
Frances Mcdormand definitely NOT. I love her and think she's one of the best actresses out there. But just NO. Carey Mulligan deserved that for Promising Young Woman. It was FANTASTIC
@55555gino You, myself, and so many others seem to be on the same page. Any thoughts as to why the Academy chose McDormand for that performance, given her competition?
@@oscarman42 It came out during COVID, so watching people losing everything and/or barely getting by was front of their mind at the time. Or, Davis and Mulligan split the vote.
I can’t believe McDormand won an Oscar for Nomadland. It was a boring, boring movie that made me angry bc of those people ended up living in their cars bc of their poor choices.
When I think of Fargo's win at the oscars I can only think of Brenda Blethyn and Emily Watson. I like Frances, but Brenda and Emily gave much better performances. Still, Brenda is my absolute favorite!
Totally agree. Saw that movie 3 times in the theater the last time on St. Patrick's Day. The first time I saw it my Irish blood was so rolled up if anyone with a British accent had spoken to me I swear by my Irish ancestors I would have shoved their Union Jack up where the sun doesn't shine complete with the flag staff
Even though I believe that Tom Cruise should have at least one Oscar (preferably Born on the Fourth of July), there's no questioning Daniel Day-Lewis' three wins. Great video, really enjoy the weekly videos and daily polls 👍
@officalscw6314 Sincerely appreciate your participation and support! I think Cruise really deserved to win for Magnolia, but Born on the 4th was also worthy.
The best thing about Hepburn's win for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is that had she not won there may not have been the tie the following year. To not give Barbra Streisand the Oscar would have been one of the all time faux pas.
My high school friends and I were all fans of the book One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and when we first heard that Jack Nicholson was going to play McMurphy in the movie our unanimous reaction was "Oh my God! That's perfect!" He practically had the Oscar won before the movie was even made.
I think Jack Nicholson’s two best movies are The Last Detail and Chinatown. He may have given more noticeable performances in other movies but those are the two best movies as overall movies.
Nicholson should have won for Chinatown, and if not him then Al Pacino for the Godfather Part Two. What a great movie and he's sharp as ever in the role
To each his own, I was rooting for Frances Mcdormand to win at the Oscars for Nomadland. I know I'm in the minority here, but I loved her in every scene. She amazed me, from the poem scene, the lone scenes and the end.
I completely agree with your assessment of Ingrid Bergman's win for "Murder on the Orient Express". I saw the film when it was first released and thought that if one female performance from that film was Oscar worthy, it was that of Lauren Bacall. She was clearly having the time of her life. Everyone says that Bergman's win for "Anastasia" was an apology. It's as historically inaccurate a film as can be (big surprise from Hollywood), but that's not the point. I love the film. and I love Ingrid in it. So that gets an up vote from me. One of the worst Supporting Actress wins ever was Helen Hayes for "Airport". However, I'm surprised she was overlooked for "Anastasia", playing the Dowager Empress of Russia. It's the sort of performance the academy usually loves.
Brenda Blethyn. OMG that movie still affects me so deeply so many years later. The scene where she meets her daughter; Marianne Jean-Baptiste, is one of the most riveting ever!
I turned my back on Oscar when Judy Garland lost to Grace Kelly. Kelly's performance was less than the worst high school performance. If you get to see Judy in A Star Is Born on the big screen you will know what Im talking about.
For Katherine she should’ve won 3 Oscars, the lion in winter is the only one among her 4 Oscar wins that was deserved, she should’ve won for the Philadelphia story over ginger rogers and suddenly last summer, If you know, you know how I feel on Meryl I’m a firm believer she should’ve broke Kate record in the 2000s, first of all, I legit feel she should’ve won over Kate in 1982 for The French Lieutenant's Woman, and then won 2 Oscars in the 2000s for the devil wears prads and doubt, I feel her win for the Iron Lady was the academy apologizing for not awarding her for what many people agreed what was the best decade of her career in the 2000s, viola or Michelle Williams should’ve won instead
@Kevin-rg3yc I thought she would win for FLW. I would have loved had she won for Prada, but it was Helen Mirren's turn. I'm not a huge fan of Hepburn and feel that 4 wins was way too many.
@@oscarman42if I’m gonna be frank my girl Bette Davis was the true best actress from the golden age of Hollywood and should’ve had Katharine record the issue with Bette was her inconsistency and not picking better work, as well as her refusal to adjust or adapt to the new era of method acting, in addition she always had a difficult relationship with high ranking film executives for more control, which was unfortunate since film executives had more control within the academy,
I wonder how Bergman came up with such a great speech in the time that it took her to get from her seat to the stage when she won for "Orient Express."
I got about twenty minutes into "The Iron lady" before I realized it was Streep in the title role. Streep's physicality was beyond amazing. This was her best performance of all time.
Hello, Mr Oscarman42. You just said something that was 100% spot on and I had almost forgotten. BRENDA BLETHEN SHOULD HAVE WON THE OSCAR FOR SECRETS AND LIES!!! This is so true. I don't even see how she could have lost??? Yes, even though EVERY other actress nominated did an excellent job with their characters. Still, Ms Blethyn deserved that Oscar! PS - I believe Ms McDonald's accent or dialect made the voters remember her just a little more than the others. My Opinion! Thanks again! 🏆🏆
@nathantaylor1921 I agree with you 100%! Blethyn was robbed. And it's not as though she had no support going to the ceremony (Golden Globe, BAFTA, Cannes, NY Film Critics, National Board of Review). She deserved it!
I believe there is always one that doesn't feel right. I am a big fan of Jack Nicholson and Ingrid Bergman and they might have scored even better with nominations and awards but maybe with different movies? My votes for Nicholson would be; Easy Rider, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Ironweed, and About Schmidt with nominations for The Shining, The King of Marvin Gardens, Witches of Eastwick, The Pledge, and The Departed. For Ingrid Bergman, I would have given her awards for For Whom the Bells Tool, Gaslight, Anastasia and Autumn Sonata with nominations for Casablanca, Notorious, Goodbye Again, Indiscreet and Cactus Flower. I am not a big fan of Day Lewis winning for Lincoln, Streep winning for Ironlady, Hepburn winning for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and McDormant winning for Fargo. Streep is an excellent actress and she might have won for Doubt or Devil Wears Prada but got nominations that doesn't make sense: The Post, Florence Foster Jenkins, Into the Woods, August: Osage County, Julie and Julia... If only we could erase those nominations.
Absolutely yes, in the cases of Nicholson, Streep, Day-Lewis and even deserved to have more, for example Daniel Day-Lewis should have won for his epic performance in Gangs of New York that year, not Adrien Brody, my God. The only case I would say “no”, Frances McDormand, 3 Oscars? Are you serious? If anything she deserved the one for Fargo and that would be more than enough for her, the third one they gave her was totally gratuitous.
It's just difficult for me to understand why McDormand has 3 when so many talented actresses either have yet to win or never will receive even one Oscar.
Love DDL, but The Pianist was much more difficult role and Brody will eventually be considered one of the greats once more people see The Brutalist. It's the best performance of the year imo
Michael, can you do a video on the screenplay category? I can only say this, it is crazy that Walter Brennan was able to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar three times so quickly.
@angelcastaneda529 Thank you so much for your input. Right now, it seems like most viewers of the channel enjoy topics on acting wins. But hopefully I'll expand that in the future. Looking back, Brennan winning 3 Oscars seems crazy...but at least we now know how it happened.
@@RobertPagano226 Lol, “but I tried, didn’t I? Gosh darn it, at least I did that.”, I was just saying that, because if I create my channel on the Oscars, I would go over some of my favorite screenplay wins, I picked six in both the adapted and original screenplay and honestly, I liked the ones that I picked, I usually am critical on how I write these and start over, but honestly I’m satisfied with my picks :)
@@angelcastaneda529 Angel, I'm confident in the future we'll see other categories, but I admit & enjoy commenting on the acting most. We are all exceptional in our own way in bringing a passionate view whenever that category poll shows up. Let me guess, you're a writer? Stay Well!!
@@RobertPagano226 Yeah, I’m a writer, not a good one mind you, and I’m often critical in what I write, but many writers struggle, some of the Oscar-winning screenwriters say the same thing, that they struggled and continue writing. But I love the acting categories, since I’ve only mostly just the modern stuff, I would love to watch the older categories, not just read and listen to the common consensus.
I love Michelle Williams in MWWM too.. but I'm surprised some people don't like it.. As I'm from Assam,India, this movie kinda made me more interested in story of Monroe❤
Dianne Ladd was/is the classic supporting actress actor! She added the kick Alice needed, for those who weren't sold on Burstyn. I liked her cause she always seems to be acting in her own little film with a film...ha! Marsha Mason should be given a chance again to get that elusive Oscar...Will it happen? Probably not. I love Kerr in Jack Clayton's The Innocents...a real director who knew how to direct great actresses! It's a very creepy film
@@PaulWEvans Yes! Ladd really elevated the film with her gritty character. As for Mason, at this point, it looks like an Honorary Oscar may be the only thing left for her to attain.
And here's my Marion Davies rant again. There were only 3 nominees for best actress for 1933 films. Hepburn won for MORNING GLORY. Of the three May Robson should have won (Diana Wynyard was the 3rd nominee). But Marion Davies should have been nominated for PEG O' MY HEART along with Bebe Daniels for 42nd STREET. And Davies should have won!
I don't think any of the people mentioned should've won 3 or 4 Oscars. There are so many great performances that missed out because of their multiple wins.
@SaadKhan-pm1tm So true! To think of some of the greats who never won even one Oscar, yet a few won multiple times, and not always for worthy performances.
I don't agree with that mindset, if someone really gives the best performance. They should be rewarded and winning before shouldn't be held against them.
@EddieHenderson92 I do agree that most deserving performance should get the award. But I just don't think many of multiple winners actually deserved it every time. Just my opinion.
Meryl Streep - her best win is Sophie's Choice. I probably like the film itself better than most do but it's far from my favorite film with her. I would have given it to her the other two for something else like Doubt and The Devil Wears Prada or two she wasn't even nominated for ( but if I could change it she would have !) I love her in The Hours (it's her performance I gravite to most hers and Ed Harris ) and Death Becomes her. I love and adore her in Julie and Julia but I would give it to Gabourey Sidbe instead. Streep does have an unusually high degree of nominations but while some get in there are because she is Streep she has some because they came at a time they had a hard time finding enough for the line up plus others are deserved. Hepburn -I probably wouldn't give it to her for any of the ones she won for maybe Lion in Winter but I am not as crazy about it as most seem to be and Barbra could have won on her own May Robson over Hepburn Guess Who's Coming to Dinner - I don't mind this one as much as many do but it's a strong line up and it should have gone to of the others.I am not a big fan of The Graduate except when Bancroft is on screen so I give it to her Streisand for Funny Girl Marsha Mason for Only When I Laugh -I never cared for the win for On Golden Pond for Hepburn but I love it for Henry Fonda I would give it to Hepburn for Summertime in a tie with Anna Magnnani (can't take it away from Anna !) Summertime is her finest performance in my opinion with a few others I love her in but she matches her persona with some key changes she's more restrained and kind of shy here but desperate for company although spirited. It's her most endearing role I think . Bergman - her best is Gaslight I would go for Deborah Kerr in The King and I over Bergman in Anastasia and either Ladd or Madeline Kahn for her supporting win . Jack Nicholson -One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest is his best here although Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon would ahev been deserved as well. I would have given it to him for A Few Good Men too. Frances McDormand -all are deserved but she didn't need them all .I think all three are solid ,on their own I could understand it better. I prefer Brenda Blethyn although I do find Fargo an easier watch. Sally Hawkins in The Shape of Water over Frances in 3 Billboards This is the tough one I think the other four were deserving I am going with Vanessa Kirby for Pieces of A Woman but Carey,Viola and Adrea were remarkable in their roles too. I would celebrate them winning as well. Day Lewis -I like him in My Left Foot the best .I think he's solid in Lincoln but I always think of the other ones in Lincoln over him -Sally Field,Tommy Lee Jones and Gloria Ruben and even James Spader. Walter Brennan -I will give it to him for The Westerner John Garfield (Four Daughters ) over Brennen in Kentucky Micha Auer in My Man Godfrey over Brennan in Come and Get It - My Man Godfrey would have swept that year if I had anything to say about it ! Sorry for the long post I don't blame anyone for not wanting to read it !
@kellie-nd1yp I always love your detailed comments - thank you for taking the time to always share your interesting thoughts on each video's topic! You definitely know your films - and Oscars!
I don't think it's a very good movie but her performance is one of the greatest cinematic achievements I've ever seen. If you didn't know who she was and you watched that you would not believe it that was an American. That's acting She was phenomenal in A cry in the dark her Australian accent is on point, I also thought her portrayal in Doubt was elevated by Philip Seymour Hoffman and one of her bests.
Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino gave all-time great performances in the 70's. I think Jack deserved it for One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, I still defend his win for As Good as It Gets and I would change his best supporting Oscar for A Few Good Men instead of Terms and give Sam Shepard Best Supporting Actor for All the Right Stuff that year. Pacino should've 100% won for The Godfather 2 and Serpico.
Thank you. 1. My favorite Katheine H's performance is in The Phila Stoy. I think Gues Who is too preachy, all the perfomace were adversely affected. 2. The production, train, and snow were the stars of Murder on the Orient Expess.
@raydunn8262 Lots of comments have mentioned The Philadelphia Story. How ironic that so many think Hepburn is a deserving winner, just not for the right film(s)! Love your assessment of Orient Express (I would add the great score).
1. Ingred"s accent was over the top like when she said 'brown babies'. 2. Nothing can compare to Helen H bearing Maureen S, both in Airport. 3. Murder was an Event flick, all cameos. 4. Only Albert F deserved to be recognized. He's a chameleon, Tom J, Murder, and The Dresser. F/ck Kenneth -B with that mustache, he's not a good person. 5. My women favs in the 3 eras, 2 are chameleons, Anne Bancroft and Toni Collette, they can/could do it all. My first, Kate H, she wa always Kate 6. Others, Michelle Pfiefer, her problem, she's too gorgeous. Bemedck C, the two Kates, B and W, and Spiderman no. 2, won Tony for Angels revival. 7. Vid recommendation: now there's 3 flicks that won 3 acting Oscars. Who's the best. Jamie LC should sit ths one out.
Which actor can play a diversity of roles and disappear into their characters? Regarding living actors, besides Streep and Day-Lewis, my list would include Gary Oldman, Christian Bale, and Kate Winslet, among others.
It certainly portrayed women as hysterics or the "helpers" or people "to bed"...Like Tootsie, the dumb women don't fare too well when Dustin is large and in charge.
Merry Christmas 🎄 and yes Marsha Mason was my only choice in 1981. Also, Viola Davis should have a Best Actress Oscar for either The Help or Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.
Kristin scott tomas should have won in 1996.her performance in The english patient. Is breath taking especially in the scene where Ralph is carrying her when she is dying
Jack’s first Oscar was well deserving. The second one, I’m on the fence about. A good supporting performance, but he had far superior parts in Chinatown, last detail and The Shining. As good as it gets was good, but not spellbinding
As far as I'm concerned, the British version of Gaslight (1940), directed by Thorold Dickinson, is a better film than the MGM version (1944) directed by George Cukor. As, in fact, is Diana Wynyard's performance - although her acting is subtler, it is more nuanced than Bergman's, whose mannerisms aren't that different from those she employs in Anastasia and Murder on the Orient Express. She doesn't emote as much as Bergman (the volume isn't as dialled up), in that she isn't tearful and overwrought, but what she does well is convey dread. And her reactions work because Walbrook does a fine job of showing us his character's misogyny, whereas Boyer plays him as a murderer. Wynyard always looks dismayed that the man who is supposed to love her looks at her with contempt. The way she presents the wife as wide-eyed, struck dumb, and zombie-like works because it shows us her psychological paralysis. It's no accident that the wife is called Bella in the 1940 version. The erotic subjugation and cruelty is something the husband enjoys. Women to him are possessions like the rubies he so covets. So, did Bergman deserve her Oscar for Gaslight? No, I think Barbara Stanwyck ought to have won for Double Indemnity, but I still love Ingrid Bergman; I think she deserved an Oscar for Anastasia.
I think with Meryl Streep Oscar voters may have thought all of these nominations only to have one Best Actress win and 29 years between Oscar wins and being 62 at that time voters may have thought it was long overdue. Hepburn one scene won her that second Oscar.
All these actors had careers that were much bigger than their individual wins. I think when they turn 75 or so, they should get one that's slightly bigger with a diamond encrusted on it to represent their whole solid careers. Seems wrong that Meryl went almost thirty years without winning another Oscar. But can also see how the Academy needs to spread them around. Glenn Close deserves that Lifetime Achievement. Tom Cruise, too.
@@oscarman42Emma is very young though. She easily has another forty years of work in the industry. If she keeps working with interesting directors like Yorgos I definitely think she can easily win another Oscar, but it will likely be decades from now.
Thought it was just me,I don't mind it but the way critics and movie buffs go on about it makes it seem like the best winner ever,Macy was the deserving Oscar winner
I agree with most of your assessments, but I still like Lewis’ win for My Left Foot the best, even though all three were deserved. I do have a special place in my heart for Marge Gundersen in Fargo, maybe not McDormand’s best performance, but my favorite. I rewatch Fargo often. I do agree that Carey Mulligan should have won for Promising Young Woman, it was much more memorable. It was interesting to learn why, perhaps, Walter Brennan won so many Oscars in the early years. I did not know extras were ever allowed to vote. As for the actors I think disappear into their roles, I would say Daniel Day Lewis always has, and also Joaquin Phoenix. I might even add Sam Rockwell to that list. Happy Holidays!!!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on these actors and their winning performances. It's always nice to learn how they are perceived from another's eyes. Wishing you happy holidays as well!
I completely agree with you, Oscarman: out of all of them, it’s only Daniel Day-Lewis who deserves to have three Oscars. It’s only him who’s demonstrated unequivocally the versatility in each of his Oscar-winning roles to justify his possession of three Oscars; the rest either simply lack versatility or weren’t fortunate enough to get a role to demonstrate it. Marlon Brando and Bette Davis are two other actors I can think of that had the versatility to disappear into their roles and had the potential to win three or more Oscars. Versatility, it seems, is a much rarer quality in actors than we possibly realize.
@paul2587 Do you think it's simply a case of timing...that the 3-time winners (except for DDL) just 'lucked out' in years that weren't strong in their category, and that Brando and Davis faced tougher competition? Or is it something else? Please illuminate me!
The best performances i think are ingrid bergman, gaslight Walter brennan the westerner Jack nicholson terms of endearment, Frances mcdormand fargo, Katherine hepburn, lion in winter. Meryl streep sophies choice, Daniel day lewis my left foot. Jack nicholson was more deserving for five easy pieces and chinatown, katherine hepburn for a long day's journey into night and the philadelphia story. Meryl for doubt. Frances for mississippi burning, most of these won for movies they shouldn't have and didn't win for movies they should have but of them all daniel day lewis is the only one that deserved all 3 oscars he won for, and the other 3 he was nominated for he could easily have won for too, especially in the name of the father in which he is nothing short of magnificent, the interrogation scenes alone in that movie are oscar worthy.
@oscarman42 no michael, i think there were some excellent performances in the years I mentioned for example tom cruise in born on the fourth of July and jessica lange in Frances.
My choices for actors who disappear into their roles: Johnny Depp, Ralph Fiennes (to a degree) and DiCaprio. Man In The Iron Mask and J Edgar are soooo underrated.
The editing on KRAMER VS KRAMER is not tv and the editing was different up to that point. I don’t understand your position on this. But I would have chosen APOCALYPSE NOW, for best movie that year!! And I love IRON LADY and she’s fantastic in that film.
Streep's best is in "Sophie's choice", although she is EXTRAORDINARY in everyrhing she does. DDL - "My left foot", although he is great in these three films. Hepburn's best is in "On golden pond", although I LOVE HER in "Guess whos coming to dinner" ( I KNOW ! ONLY me and herself like that win !😂😂). McDormand's best is in "Fargo", although she is great in "Three Billboards" and that Blethyn really deserved in 96 ( "Secrets and lies"). Bergman's best was in "Gaslight" ( YES !!! I agree; one of the best films I have ever seen as well ). She is well, in "Orient express", Michael but , I agree; it's a tiny part and Bacall is better in the film .
Denzel Washington should’ve gotten more than 2 Oscars, specifically for Malcolm x, the tragedy of Macbeth and hurricane, training day win I don’t mind although I would’ve preferred for Russell Crowe, Denzel is the only one other person that’s deserving of having the most Oscar win record besides Meryl and Daniel day Lewis
I can support Katharine Hepburn having 4 Oscars, but they would be for Alice Adams, Holiday (not even nominated for that!), Summertime, and Long Day's Journey Into Night. Also Little Women, Stage Door, Bringing Up Baby, Pat and Mike (all also not nominated!!), The Rainmaker, and, okay, The Lion in Winter, so yes, at least one was deserved.
Well, even if the extras union was permitted to vote, Walter Brennan still wouldn’t have won the Supporting Actor Oscar for Sergeant York on his 4th nomination considering he had already received 3 Supporting Actor Oscars by that point. Wouldn’t it have been a little excessive?
Personally, I think 3 was excessive! But the extras were - and still are - a loyal group, and had they still been allowed to vote, Brennan might have won again.
@@oscarman42 I just didn't like her enough... She certainly was a better Marilyn than Ana de Armas, but still I don't really know about her being the best of that year. I though Glenn Close and Rooney Mara to be just better in some forms. I would give the oscar to Meryl, she became Thatcher. Viola was incredible, and the runner up for me.
I love both Jack Nicholson and Frances McDormand, but it’s interesting to see how their personas affected their careers. Whenever McDormand releases a new movie I am there in the front row! I love how her films are a portrait of real working-class America that is barely shown in the movies. But I like them precisely because they are different, there’s no comparison between Fargo, Nomadland and Women Talking. Meanwhile, you’re spot on, Nicholson’s career was negatively impacted by his stardom. It seems that the sensitive actor from Five Easy Pieces is gone up until his last roles - like in About Schmidt, which I just adore. In my mind, McDormand deserved every single one of her Oscars, while Nicholson should’ve won for Cuckoo’s Nest and Five Easy Pieces and, perhaps, the forgotten but amazing The Last Detail. I never understood his win for Terms of Endearment - sure, I don’t like the film - but Sam Shepard was so moving in The Right Stuff that I can’t fathom his loss. My distaste for As Good As It Gets is well-known. I don’t find it funny, I don’t find it thrilling, but the implication that he’s a bad person because he has OCD is what cements it as a film I don’t want to give another try, I’ll just rewatch Last Detail instead.
I agree about Nicholson. He did much more compelling work in Last Detail and Five Easy Pieces than in As Good as it Gets, in which the most compelling performance was given by the dog.
@rafaelsolimene5350 As usual, great commentary! Frances seems to have the lock on working class American women roles. But doesn't that typecast her to an extent? Nicholson should have won for 5 Easy Pieces (as should have Karen Black).
@@oscarman42 I understand your point about McDormand being typecast, and you're right. But I think the roles she plays are different in the personality department, eventhough the stories are pretty much in the same area. I have to rewatch Five Easy Pieces, a lot of people keep talking about Karen Black, but I thought Nicholson did such a good job that I don't remember a lot of her.
Sorry but Nicholson is in my opinion a very versatile actor and one of the best to ever do it. He has no right being compared to Spencer Tracy who indeed had that issue. Five Easy Pieces, Last Detail, One Flew, Chinatown, The Passenger, Batman, A Few Good Men, The Border, Witches of Eastwick... drama, horror, comedy, loud, timid, hurtfull, heartwrenching... T he man can just do it all and with plenty of nuance
Cate Blanchett who undoubtedly deserves multiple Oscars, she would have been youngest had i not for unfaur snub (again) in 2023 for her insane performance in Tar. I think industry takes her for granted as she knocks it out of the park each timr. She should have won for: Elizabeth Im not there Blue Jasmine Tar Shed have matched K Hepburn
@@rics1883 she won for Blue Jasmine and announced in TH-cam 10 months earlier, after seeing the movie. I did not doubt it at all. See my review of BLUE JASMINE. It's under THE MOVIE INQUISITION
Unfortunately, the role she played in keeping Viola Davis from getting a nomination for Woman King will sting with women of color FOREVER. I don't think black actresses will ever support her again.
Carey Mulligan deserving an Oscar for a movie as bad as "Promising young woman" in detriment of McDormand's wonderful, steely performance in "Nomadland" is probably up there with the people who claim Leo di Caprio should have won for "Titanic"
I agree that Kate Hepburn didn’t deserve the second award because Ann Bancroft was amazing and it could have gone to Faye Dunaway, impressive as Bonnie. I believe she should have 2 awards.
My fave streep is actually not a nominated one I love her as the ixonic Madeline Ashton in Death Becomes Her and Bridges of Madsion County is my fave nomination of hers (but i was team sharon for that year)
i have to disagree on Franny McDormand. 1996 was arguably the strongest year ever on the best actress category, and she was phenomenal in Fargo. she was also very good in Nomadland, and the best timeline would be having Nomadland be her second best actress win and have Saoirse Ronan win for Lady Bird in 2017.
Anne Bancroft should have won for her role as Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate instead of Katherine Hepburn. Brenda Blethyn for Secrets and Lies instead of Frances McDormand. Frances’ role in Fargo was more of a supporting role. However if had she been nominated for supporting actress, I think she would have won too instead of Juliette Binoche in The English Patient. Glenn Close should have won for Fatal Attraction instead of Cher in Moonstruck. I think she should have won too for Dangerous Liaisons and not Jodie Foster for The Accused.
When I saw MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, I knew Ingrid would win. I thought she gave a performance that was perfect. Not overacted but still giving fully developed characterization. McDormand and Hepburn are reasons to give up on the Oscars. Bergman won numerous awards for Anastasia. She have won for Autumn Sonata.
The Iron Lady is weak Meryl. She deserved a third award for Adaptation (or at least The Hours). McDormand’s Three Billboards-the film itself steers ridiculous at times. This seemed more like a ‘career’ award.
Fargo-Ok. Would’ve probably liked the movie better if I lived in MN and understood the accents and in-joke. Kind’ve seemed like the role was rewarded for representing a working pregnant female. I would’ve voted for Brenda Blethyn. The 3rd one-wish I got to see that film in a movie theater to really appreciate the performance, but it was COVID and going to the movies was breaking the law. Watching it on DVD didn’t give you the sane appreciation of this win.
I think she won for Iron Lady because it showed two VERY different periods of a strong figure's life. The intense working years, and the slide into dementia. Very Oscar-baity.
McDormand shouldn't have won for "Nomadland", Viola Davis deserved it more for "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom". Yes that was the actual name of the movie she starred in. All 3 Oscars McDormand won came from working w her husband, half of the Coen Bros.
For me I think the following actors should have 3 or more Oscars 1.Jack Nicholson 7(The Last Detail, Chinatown, One Flew Over The Cukoos Nest & The Shining for Best Actor. Easy Rider, Batman & either A Few Good Men in a tie with Gene Hackman or The Departed). 2. Humphrey Bogart-5 wins(Best Actor forThe Maltese Falcon; Casablanca, The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre and In A Lonely Place & Best SupportingActor for The PetrifiedForest). 3. Paul Newman-4 wins(Best Actor for The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke; Slap Shot & The Verdict) 4. George C.Scott-4(Best Supporting Actor in Anatomy Of A Murder, The Hustler in a tie with Jackie Gleason also in The Hustler, Dr. Strangelove in a tie with Sterling Hayden also in Dr Strangelove and Best Actor in Patton). 5. Denzel Washington-3(Best Actor in Malcolm X, Training Day,Best Supporting Actor in Glory) I would take away Katherine Hepburn's Oscar for On Golden Pond and give it to Kathleen Turner in Body Heat. Another Jack Nicholson trivia- He won an acting Oscar in 3 different decades only Katherine Hepburn won in 4 different decades.
Nicholson is one of my top 5 favorite male actors, but I'd have stopped handing him out Oscars after The Shining, where he's still at the peak of his powers. After The Shining, he's on a slow decline, especially as far as versatility is concerned, imho.
Carey Mulligan should've won for promising young women

Absolutely no! Frances McDormand or Vanessa Kirby
@Nandy169 Absolutely! She was robbed.
Anthony Hopkins IMO is one of the most versatile actors who just slips into the character and ceases being himself
@acesovernines Do you think he will be a 3-time winner?
@oscarman42 he is perhaps a little old now. But the form he showed in The Father still gives me hope.
@WonderWhatHappened While I personally don't think it was her best work, I still voted for her at SAG and am so disappointed she lost the Oscar.
@oscarman42
Glenn would have won against Olivia C if her performance was DL or FA instead of The Wife.
Frances McDormand. That third Oscar was unwarranted.
She deserved for her natural performance ❤
yes. Mulligan should have won.
@MaureenStapletonFan I still don't understand it.
@chrispa9573 100%!
@bilaalbadurdeen2733 There are many who agree with you.
When I think of Fargo's win at the oscars I can only think of Brenda Blethyn and Emily Watson. I like Frances, but Brenda and Emily gave much better performances. Still, Brenda is my absolute favorite!
@victorrodrigueesoficial Right? Blethyn's performance was the type for which the Academy bestows Oscars...why not hers?
@@oscarman42 Well she wasn't the America Sweetheart at the moment... Frances have that kind of persona. She's more "marketable".
Brenda is always amazing - "Little Voice" is just out of this world

DDL in "in the Name of My Father", was incredible.
Frances McDormand created an iconic, one of a kind character in Fargo. Outstanding and deserving, IMO.
Many agree with you!
Agree. She created something so memorable out of something that could've easily been a cheap joke.
Not choosing Meryl Streep for the Devil Wears Prada is one of the Academy's most stupid and idiotic decisions ever.
Very interesting and noteworthy proposition!
I don't really care for Lincoln... I adored Daniel in My Left Foot.
@victorrodrigueesoficial I liked the film...but DDL's performance more.
He was amazing in MLF, one of the best
Glenn Close has been long overdue for an Oscar win. She's also an actress that is incredibly versatile. An actor I'd pick is Michael Keaton.
@DanielOrme There was quite a bit of anticipation about the film and his casting given how long it took for the while to be made.
If Adrien Brody hadn’t won, I believe Jack would’ve had his fourth Oscar for “About Schmidt” (2002).
Four previous Oscar winners and Brody. What a lineup!
That was such an shocking win. That was a good year
I think Jack Nicholson’s two best movies are The Last Detail and Chinatown.
That's what makes the channel fun - learning how others view these films and performances.
@josephpanzarella1417 Hayes was much more worthy for Anastasia. You'll get no argument from me about her win for Airport.
Brenda Blethyn. OMG that movie still affects me so deeply so many years later. The scene where she meets her daughter; Marianne Jean-Baptiste, is one of the most riveting ever!
And primarily improvised!
Just watched this again last week. Both actresses are great.
I turned my back on Oscar when Judy Garland lost to Grace Kelly. Kelly's performance was less than the worst high school performance. If you get to see Judy in A Star Is Born on the big screen you will know what Im talking about.
I believe De Niro’s ability to transform is underrated
Do you think he'll become a 3-time winner?
@@oscarman42 no he won't sadly. Personally, I believe he should have 4 Oscars (Godfather 2, Taxi Driver, Deer Hunter, Raging Bull)

Robert Shaw was snubbed for Jaws. Should’ve been nominated for best supporting actor.
For Katherine she should’ve won 3 Oscars, the lion in winter is the only one among her 4 Oscar wins that was deserved, she should’ve won for the Philadelphia story over ginger rogers and suddenly last summer,
If you know, you know how I feel on Meryl I’m a firm believer she should’ve broke Kate record in the 2000s, first of all, I legit feel she should’ve won over Kate in 1982 for The French Lieutenant's Woman, and then won 2 Oscars in the 2000s for the devil wears prads and doubt, I feel her win for the Iron Lady was the academy apologizing for not awarding her for what many people agreed what was the best decade of her career in the 2000s, viola or Michelle Williams should’ve won instead
@Kevin-rg3yc I thought she would win for FLW. I would have loved had she won for Prada, but it was Helen Mirren's turn. I'm not a huge fan of Hepburn and feel that 4 wins was way too many.
@@oscarman42if I’m gonna be frank my girl Bette Davis was the true best actress from the golden age of Hollywood and should’ve had Katharine record the issue with Bette was her inconsistency and not picking better work, as well as her refusal to adjust or adapt to the new era of method acting, in addition she always had a difficult relationship with high ranking film executives for more control, which was unfortunate since film executives had more control within the academy,
@@Kevin-rg3yc No doubt Davis would have agreed with you!
Meryl Streep should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress in The Devil Wears Prada and could have won an Oscar for that.

I wonder how Bergman came up with such a great speech in the time that it took her to get from her seat to the stage when she won for "Orient Express."
@kitkeller5831 My guess is that was in her thoughts prior to the ceremony.
As I recall, Bergman was the favorite to win that year, so she had time to prepare a speech. Much better was her performance in "Autumn Sonata".
Streep's best was in Doubt. I was a good Catholic boy and DAMN!!!!!!!! Sophie's Choice is one of those movies you watch and well....
@imeanithonest5704 Yes, she was excellent in that film (as was Davis).
I actual don’t care for her doubt performance. I actually believe her performance in “Julie and julia” should have won.
I got about twenty minutes into "The Iron lady" before I realized it was Streep in the title role. Streep's physicality was beyond amazing. This was her best performance of all time.

I love me some Daniel Day Lewis however I believe Tom Cruise should have won for Born on the 4th of July

Totally agree. Marsha mason was the most deserving winner that year. One of my all time favorite female performances.
I loved Jack nicholson in terms
It's a shame Mason didn't win for one of her very best performances.

@SaadKhan-pm1tm
I agree. Maybe Daniel DW deserved all 3 as our Oscarman eluded to.
I don't agree with that mindset, if someone really gives the best performance. They should be rewarded and winning before shouldn't be held against them.
@EddieHenderson92 I do agree that most deserving performance should get the award. But I just don't think many of multiple winners actually deserved it every time. Just my opinion.
@raydunn8262 Yes, Daniel DW probably is the exception here, as all his wins were pretty epic.
Meryl Streep - her best win is Sophie's Choice. I probably like the film itself better than most do but it's far from my favorite film with her. I would have given it to her the other two for something else like Doubt and The Devil Wears Prada or two she wasn't even nominated for ( but if I could change it she would have !) I love her in The Hours (it's her performance I gravite to most hers and Ed Harris )
and Death Becomes her. I love and adore her in Julie and Julia but I would give it to Gabourey Sidbe instead.
Streep does have an unusually high degree of nominations but while some get in there are because she is Streep she has some because they came at a time they had a hard time finding enough for the line up plus others are deserved.
Hepburn -I probably wouldn't give it to her for any of the ones she won for maybe Lion in Winter but I am not as crazy about it as most seem to be and Barbra could have won on her own
May Robson over Hepburn
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner - I don't mind this one as much as many do but it's a strong line up and it should have gone to of the others.I am not a big fan of The Graduate except when Bancroft is on screen so I give it to her
Streisand for Funny Girl
Marsha Mason for Only When I Laugh -I never cared for the win for On Golden Pond for Hepburn but I love it for Henry Fonda
I would give it to Hepburn for Summertime in a tie with Anna Magnnani (can't take it away from Anna !) Summertime is her finest performance in my opinion with a few others I love her in but she matches her persona with some key changes she's more restrained and kind of shy here but desperate for company although spirited.
Sally Hawkins in The Shape of Water over Frances in 3 Billboards
This is the tough one I think the other four were deserving I am going with Vanessa Kirby for Pieces of A Woman but Carey,Viola and Adrea were remarkable in their roles too. I would celebrate them winning as well.
Day Lewis -I like him in My Left Foot the best .I think he's solid in Lincoln but I always think of the other ones in Lincoln over him -Sally Field,Tommy Lee Jones and Gloria Ruben and even James Spader.
Walter Brennan -I will give it to him for The Westerner
John Garfield (Four Daughters ) over Brennen in Kentucky
Micha Auer in My Man Godfrey over Brennan in Come and Get It - My Man Godfrey would have swept that year if I had anything to say about it !
Sorry for the long post I don't blame anyone for not wanting to read it !

I don't think it's a very good movie but her performance is one of the greatest cinematic achievements I've ever seen.
If you didn't know who she was and you watched that you would not believe it that was an American.
That's acting
She was phenomenal in A cry in the dark her Australian accent is on point, I also thought her portrayal in Doubt was elevated by Philip Seymour Hoffman and one of her bests.

Jack’s first Oscar was well deserving. The second one, I’m on the fence about. A good supporting performance, but he had far superior parts in Chinatown, last detail and The Shining. As good as it gets was good, but not spellbinding
"The same person speaking different lines."....the way I perceive Streep.
I think Anne Bancroft should have won 3 Oscars. The Miracle Worker, The Pumkin Eater, and The Graduate.
@LandoHendrix444 A talented and versatile actress.
I couldn't agree more about Blethyn in Secrets and Lies...I'd also throw in Marianne Jean-Baptiste in supporting actress for the same picture.
Do you think MJB will return as a nominee next year?
I think with Meryl Streep Oscar voters may have thought all of these nominations only to have one Best Actress win and 29 years between Oscar wins and being 62 at that time voters may have thought it was long overdue. Hepburn one scene won her that second Oscar.
That's a valid point about Streep and arguably a reason why she won. Hepburn's second win remains a mystery to me.
Hepburn is WAY over-rated in my book! She has played slight variations of the same uppity priss her entire career- what a range!!
@@markgardner4685 LOL. Many here agree with you!

Do you think it was the timing for most of these? Were a lot of the wins you mentioned in years where the competition wasn't as strong?
@oscarman42 no michael, i think there were some excellent performances in the years I mentioned for example tom cruise in born on the fourth of July and jessica lange in Frances.
Nice job here Pat, great breakdown and choices, I agree with the majority of your selections.
@RobertPagano226 thanks robert,.
Yeah! Brenda!!! 07:10! Love her.
@victorrodrigueesoficial Oscar-worthy, right??
@@oscarman42 Just like Imelda Staunton in "Vera Drake". Both were amazing in Mike Leigh directed films. They should have been oscar winners right now.
My choices for actors who disappear into their roles: Johnny Depp, Ralph Fiennes (to a degree) and DiCaprio. Man In The Iron Mask and J Edgar are soooo underrated.
Depp is a great mention!
And The Runner Up Is covering the 2017 year when McDormand won her second.
@michelehamilton961 Who would your vote have gone to instead?
Nah. I love it when subtle performances win, like Frances in Nomadland.
@pb.j.1753 The Academy agreed with you.
I always thought the best performance in "Murder on the Orient Express" came from Rachel Roberts.
She was excellent too.
I agree with your assessment of Katherine Hepburn.
@sensitivedogs Sentiments on her are all over the map, interestingly.
The editing on KRAMER VS KRAMER is not tv and the editing was different up to that point. I don’t understand your position on this. But I would have chosen APOCALYPSE NOW, for best movie that year!! And I love IRON LADY and she’s fantastic in that film.
Thank you
@seanbass9800 Thank you for watching!
@ANDREandTheOscars Yay - you're back with us! The discussion just isn't the same without you!
@oscarman42 .
Thank you, my friend .
Regarding DDL i would have given him a 4th for Bill the Butcher
Tom Cruise deserved supporting for Magnolia
Agree.
I agree with your Jack Nicholson review.
@Kevin-rg3yc I believe he will be a 3-time winner.
Russell Crowe deserved that win for Besutiful Mind. Everyone knows the only reason he didn't win is due to his antics outside of acting.
Bringing Up Baby should definitely have been her first. I think back then Academy voters just weren't sure how to respond to hilarious comedy.
@DanielOrme It's been so interesting learning what others believe were the performances Hepburn should have won for.
@paul2587 I'm not convinced they do now either.
@@oscarman42 I think you're right. LOL Nothing's really changed, has it.
Jack Nicholson did disappear in his about Schmidt role however he was upset by Adrian Brody and Daniel Day could have won that year
Brennan voting is interesting.
@sensitivedogs It is unlikely he would have achieved that feat today.
@oscarman42 you're right about that.
Travis Bickle should have won an Oscar
Or perhaps Robert De Niro?
Well, even if the extras union was permitted to vote, Walter Brennan still wouldn’t have won the Supporting Actor Oscar for Sergeant York on his 4th nomination considering he had already received 3 Supporting Actor Oscars by that point. Wouldn’t it have been a little excessive?
Personally, I think 3 was excessive! But the extras were - and still are - a loyal group, and had they still been allowed to vote, Brennan might have won again.
Michelle for My Week with Marilyn? Wow...
@victorrodrigueesoficial Tell us more about your thoughts on that performance.
Michelle Williams was fantastic in MWWM and completely inhabited her character, but then I've never seen a bad Michelle Williams performance.
@danazanna No argument from me about the dog!
Jack Nicholson has never been better than in The Last Detail. One of my favorite movies.
4 timer Hepburn deserves one, maybe two. Brando should have had 3 with Last Tango -all deserved.
@philbarber9738 Brando's first should have been for Streetcar - that one has been discussed a lot on this channel.
@@oscarman42 Agree, his Stanley was something film had yet to see but Bogie was owed especially after being shut out for Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
Yes for Streep & Lewis. (I'm surprised Streep hasn't tied or passed Hepburn's by now) if she ever does. Also, Walter Brennen won 3 Best Supporting.
@garrengroom3831 It will be interesting to see if she ties Hepburn's record.
he man can just do it all and with plenty of nuance
Cate Blanchett who undoubtedly deserves multiple Oscars, she would have been youngest had i not for unfaur snub (again) in 2023 for her insane performance in Tar.
I think industry takes her for granted as she knocks it out of the park each timr.
She should have won for:
Elizabeth
Im not there
Blue Jasmine
Tar
Shed have matched K Hepburn
@rics1883 She will likely be a 3-time winner at the very least.
Daniel Day Lewis amazing performances and all Wins deserved!!
@sensitivedogs Apparently not everyone agrees with us as evidenced by the comments here.
@oscarman42 he's amazing. He is so committed to his craft.
i loveee frances in fargo and yet, i think margot and carey should have win that respective year.
@anyemkkkk Robbie was wonderful in that film. And Mulligan, most definitely.
Cate Blanchett disappears into her characters 😍
Consistently!
Carey Mulligan deserving an Oscar for a movie as bad as "Promising young woman" in detriment of McDormand's wonderful, steely performance in "Nomadland" is probably up there with the people who claim Leo di Caprio should have won for "Titanic"
@oscaralhos2008 We agree to disagree. I think Mulligan's performance was more worthy than McDormand playing McDormand (again).
I agree that Kate Hepburn didn’t deserve the second award because Ann Bancroft was amazing and it could have gone to Faye Dunaway, impressive as Bonnie. I believe she should have 2 awards.
@silvalu80 Bancroft would have gotten my vote!
My fave streep is actually not a nominated one I love her as the ixonic Madeline Ashton in Death Becomes Her and Bridges of Madsion County is my fave nomination of hers (but i was team sharon for that year)
Yes, Mad and Helle are ICONIC 😂
i have to disagree on Franny McDormand. 1996 was arguably the strongest year ever on the best actress category, and she was phenomenal in Fargo. she was also very good in Nomadland, and the best timeline would be having Nomadland be her second best actress win and have Saoirse Ronan win for Lady Bird in 2017.
That's what makes the Oscars - and this channel about them - so interesting to discuss, and debate!
We're definitely on the same page regarding Bancroft and Blethyn!
Glad you enjoyed her performance. To each his own.
The Iron Lady is weak Meryl.
She deserved a third award for Adaptation (or at least The Hours). McDormand’s Three Billboards-the film itself steers ridiculous at times. This seemed more like a ‘career’ award.
@tomfleischhacker3172 What did you think about McDormand's other two wins?
For me I think the following actors should have 3 or more Oscars
1.Jack Nicholson 7(The Last Detail, Chinatown, One Flew Over The Cukoos Nest & The Shining for Best Actor.
3. Paul Newman-4 wins(Best Actor for The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke; Slap Shot & The Verdict)
5. Denzel Washington-3(Best Actor in Malcolm X, Training Day,Best Supporting Actor in Glory)
I would take away Katherine Hepburn's Oscar for On Golden Pond and give it to Kathleen Turner in Body Heat.
Another Jack Nicholson trivia- He won an acting Oscar in 3 different decades only Katherine Hepburn won in 4 different decades.
@stevemcnary7963 Great trivia! And I appreciate your list.
Nicholson is one of my top 5 favorite male actors, but I'd have stopped handing him out Oscars after The Shining, where he's still at the peak of his powers. After The Shining, he's on a slow decline, especially as far as versatility is concerned, imho.
