  • The Lightrail straddles Jerusalem, the Israeli and the Palestinian sections of the city and goes close (but not into) the old city. So interesting how parts of the line you find Hasidic Jews, and other parts only Arab Muslims while other parts have a mixture!
Construction on the Red line began in 2002 and ended in 2010, when the testing phase began. It was built by the CityPass consortium, which has a 30-year concession to operate it. The project required construction of the Jerusalem Chords Bridge as well as other renovation projects around Jerusalem.
After repeated delays due to archaeological discoveries and technical issues, service began, initially free of charge, on August 19, 2011. It became fully operational on December 1, 2011. The line is 13.9 kilometers (8.6 mi) long with 23 stops.
With a total estimated cost for the Red Line's initial section of ₪3.8 billion (approx. US $1.1 billion),the project was criticized for budget overruns, for its route serving Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem and for contributing to air and noise pollution during construction.

I first rode the J'lem light rail in 2011 just after it opened. The ability to traverse the city in an hour or so was amazing. I have not been back since 2018, and am looking to go next year some time.

I also rode on the Jerusalem Light Rail in June 2022. It's one of my favorite light rail systems

    Great video!
The system is getting a ton of expansions soon - the Red Line is being extended on both ends, and the Green, Light Green, Blue and Light Blue Lines are under construction.
In addition to those, there are additional lines planned:
The Purple Line has been approved, and the Gold and Brown Lines are in planning.
Jerusalem is also going to get a new city center tunnel for national rail

Wonderful video. Jeruzalem is probably the only tramcompany in the world having it's trams fitted with bulletproof windows and covered parts to protect them and the passengers for terroristic attacks.... Isn't that sad?

Do they run three car trains? like Minneapolis, Denver Co or Salt Lake City?

No, the platforms can only fit two cars. However, all cars have 5 articulated sections so the capacity of one train is relatively high by American standards

Great! What hours of the day did you film this at? I was in Jerusalem on June 14th between the 12:00-16:00 in the afternoon so maybe I saw you🙃
