  • The Lightrail straddles Jerusalem, the Israeli and the Palestinian sections of the city and goes close (but not into) the old city. So interesting how parts of the line you find Hasidic Jews, and other parts only Arab Muslims while other parts have a mixture!
Construction on the Red line began in 2002 and ended in 2010, when the testing phase began. It was built by the CityPass consortium, which has a 30-year concession to operate it. The project required construction of the Jerusalem Chords Bridge as well as other renovation projects around Jerusalem.
After repeated delays due to archaeological discoveries and technical issues, service began, initially free of charge, on August 19, 2011. It became fully operational on December 1, 2011. The line is 13.9 kilometers (8.6 mi) long with 23 stops.
With a total estimated cost for the Red Line's initial section of ₪3.8 billion (approx. US $1.1 billion),the project was criticized for budget overruns, for its route serving Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem and for contributing to air and noise pollution during construction.

As mentioned, this line (red) opened in 2011 with ~14km and 23 stops. An extention to 22km is in it's final stages and due to opne in summer 2023.
2 more lines are under construction, the green line (more advanced) and the blue (first stages). Thise 3 lines are the backbone of the system that will inlude 10 lines (based on the mane lines + extentiones).
Another light rail system is under construction in Tel Avib. First line (red) due to open on November 30th but might be delayed as they have a signalling problem. 2 more lines (green and purple) are under construction and a larger metro system (3 lines, 150km, 108 station) is in the last stages of approval (construction might start in 2025/26 and first sections might open in 2032/23).

I periodically ride this light rail. It's always reliable and clean but extremely crowded!

This light railway connect Jerusalem City, Amutinnion Hill and some quarters of East Jerusalem.
Without it we should going into Pisgat Zeev by legs only.
