    Hi, i passed my CBT and THEORY about 6-7weeks ago with roadcraft ,and now have a honda cb125f which i am practicing on everyday. Your vids and teaching is a great help to me. I am 54 and will be going for my direct access , i enjoy learning new skills and when i got my hgv 1 in 1992 i thought i had achieved everything but i was wrong, achieving a full motorcycle licence will be the top . I have so much more respect for motorcycles and think you and all riders are awsome , hope to be a full bike rider soon with roadcraft, thanks again for your videos ,stay safe ,steve A .

      I think there's quite a cross-over between HGV driving and motorbike riding....they both involve total focus, masses of sntipation and position planning, concentration, eyes in the back of your head and alarmingly people who don't see bikes often seem not to see artics😅

    Hi, I passed my DAS at age 57 in February 2022 having had a Honda SS50 back in 1981! Passed my IAM Advanced Rider test in December 2023. Still watch your videos always great to continue to be educated by those who have the knowledge if you are on two wheels! Many thanks for your time.
    A quick question, I see that you often ride with an 'L' plate (I'm guessing it's on one of your CB650Fs that trainees use) - my question is When you are on an 'L' plated bike do you get treated differently by car drivers or do you have 'Instructor' on your hi-viz?
    When I was getting back to riding a bought a Honda CBF125 to get back some knowledge and bike riding experience and the 'L' plate seemed to be almost like a target on your back for car drivers, it seems that they assume that if you are on a motorbike with an 'L' plate that it is obligatory for them to follow as closely as possible regardless of the speed limit. (passed my driving test in 1982)

      Hi, sorry for the delayed reply. I do have "instructor" on my back but to be honest I don't think it makes much difference even compared to when riding my own bike without L plates or instructor hi-vis. Some people will always tailgate others, sometimes unknowingly. Others will always be impatient and lack any form of etiquette or sense of community on the road. Thanks for your comment 😊

    Hi Leanna. I passed my bike test in september 1980 at 18 years old. When it was a lot easier than today. Having been riding since the age of 8. Competing in schoolboy trials. I then had a break for around 12 years coming back to road riding in 1998 with an early edition R1. Went back to off road enduro riding (2 hour hare and hounds) with my son. This year I have come back to road riding having just bought a new Triumph 765R and a triumph Tiger 1200. Chosen for looks rather than performance. I must say I have found your videos informative and educational and find myself having to practice a lot of what you teach as it is a little alien having driven a van for the last few decades. I do find the speed limits interesting as they vary for vans and often find myself 10mph under a lot of the time (a point i'm working on). Seriously considering some advance training after watching a lot of your videos. Also living in mansfield I recognise a lot of the roads you ride. Thank you so much for taking the time to upload your videos your narration makes it easier to digest so much information

    This video appears to show the need for Motorcycles to have a slightly higher speed limit for safety reasons. Currently in Europe they are considering doing the opposite. It seems that the larger the vehicle the lower the limit. Trucks for example being lower than cars.

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's not that we need a slightly higher speed limit, by doing approximately 2mph over the speed limit simply allows for speedometer error, such that any following vehicles who may be reading higher than my speedo, don't get frustrated that I appear to be doing less than the limit, purely by speedo error. Whatever the speed limit, people will want to break it whether on motorcycles or in cars. All we are trying to do is reduce the possibility of tailgaters. It doesn't always work of course 😂 Thanks for your comment 😊

    I had about 2 miles of 70mph limit dual carriageway on my test. Initially I was behind a van doing about 58 mph and with no traffic in the outside lane I decided I would have to pass it otherwise I may be penalised for going to slow. Once I went out to pass though the van speeded up to about 65 so I kept on going up to about 70mph before I could safely get back in but it seemed to take ages to get past it. As a new rider I found 70mph quite challenging, just from only having been at that speed briefly in my training.

      Well done. It sounds like you did the right thing. More experience riding at the higher speeds will help you feel more settled. (it doesn’t happen now, prob because i’m not thinking about gear changes and indicators) but up to and during my test i got it wrong. tbf he did drive me through heavy road works with multiple changes. i stuck to 20 and lost a point. interesting. great video. good reminder.

    There will always be drivers that want to go 35,40,50mph+ in a 30 zone (or 80mph+ on national speed limit roads) so showing you can ride at the speed Limit doesn't mean much in terms of safety. Moreover if someone gets it into their head they need to overtake you, you're better off letting them do so.

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  ปีที่แล้ว

      So what's your point? Ride at below the speed limit and annoy said drivers or stay safer with the majority of drivers who are more likely to give you a little more space if you at least reach the speed limit?
      I agree about allowing tailgaters to pass, if it is safe to do so.
      Thanks for your considered comments.

    • @mjr2567
      @mjr2567 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @motorcyclelessonsuk Simply that people should feel more able to drive/ride within the speed limit but then imagine people driving 15mph in a 20... Also that if you are travelling slower, there is more time to react.
      I suppose I'm looking at it from more of an urban perspective. There's roads that are 30mph but have average speeds at less than 20.
      To be honest, I was triggered when you said something like inconvenience a motorist or road user but the way I see it is there's no minimum speed on most roads so it's their responsibility to drive appropriately.
      This was the first of your videos I watched but I'm enjoying watching them and have learnt a few things, thanks.

    Is the fueling really good on that bike or is it due to the type of engine? 20mph 4th gear super low rpm and it's not struggling. Some 650s I've seen hate being below 4k rpm and for 20mph to be smooth would be 2nd gear.

    Unfortunately, I failed my Mod 2 this week due to the Speed mistakes. I travelled through a 30 at 20 because I thought it was a 20, but I also kept reminding myself that if it's not a "Standard" speed for the type of road then there would be repeaters but I still went against my better judgement and went 20 anyway.
    According to the DVSA Examiner, there were also 40, 50 and 60 zones where I never reached the speed limit. I also entered a 50 zone with an S bend where I did 38-40 (I thought the S bend was going to be more angled than it was) and the examiner said I should have definitely been doing 50 through it :|
    He's also told me that I should try to aim for 1-2mph above the limit (you mentioned this as it's to do with Speedometer error) and they're not going to give a fault for it. Next one is booked in so fingers crossed I listen to my gut next time and don't become overly cautious due to overthinking :/

    Hi Leanna,
    I failed my first MOD 2 for assuming it was 40 when the road was a 30. This video was very helpful however you said that if you’re speed is too slow too you can also fail. What are the best clues if there aren’t any side roads for a long period when exiting a junction so that you can always be sure what the new speed is.

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello, watch the very beginning of this video again up to 01:33, including reading the text for mistake #1. If you don't see a change of speed limit sign at a junction and there are no side roads, its safer to assume the speed limit has remained the same, but keep looking for repeater signs. Remember 30s very rarely have repeaters, and if it's a built up area, it's likely to be 30, if there are no repeaters telling you otherwise. Thanks 😊

  • @martinliu5480
    @martinliu5480 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm wondering what speed is deemed as a fail if the limit was 60mph for example? the speed limits are not target speeds. Can I do something like 55mph in a 60?
    I've seen drivers do below the speed limit because of hazards and/or they have never been in the area before and wouldn't know what obstacles are up ahead.
    another examples are lanes, 60mph but I would go around 50mph due to deer's jumping out etc

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We should be riding at the speed limit if it is safe to do so. If the road ahead is clear and safe we are at higher risk from tailgaters and people looking for the dangerous overtake by not doing the speed limit. "It's a limit not a target" is an old phrase no longer suited to the modern impatient world I'm afraid. But the biggest part here is "if it is safe to do so". Clearly is there is a hazard ahead, we may not be riding at the top end of the speed limit. Not knowing the road is not a reason to ride unnecessarily slowly. Forward planning, bend planning, and anticipation skills should enable you to ride any road without dawdling. Thanks 😊

    Hi amazing content , i failed as i left a double duel carriageway too slowly (at 45mph) which was a serious :( What would you recommend a decent speed is to leave the double fuel carriageway , 55-65mph?

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello, thank you! I would leave at 70 unless there is a queue on the slip road, or the slip road is especially short (thus not enough time to slow down before a bend or junction). The traffic behind you on the dual carriageway may not be preparing to leave with you, and may not be prepared to slow down for you to exit. The slip road is there to allow you to do your slowing down on it, not before it (with the above exceptions). I hope that helps. Thanks for your comment and good luck next time 😊

    Leanna hi have had motorcycles 🏍 all my life so I have passed my ctb test first time loads of times but decided to do a mod 1 and mod2 I havd passed my mod1 first round but I failed my mod 2 the other week on junctions can you advise me mate said andy if your turning right is right ✅ look and another right look and a life saver

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Andy, if you're failing on junctions, go back and watch the earlier videos in this series. There is one specifically on left and right turns. Try the roundabouts videos and also those on forward planning and anticipation.
      th-cam.com/video/wvX6HIXmLD8/w-d-xo.html
      Turning right is: mirrors, signal, lifesaver, position, lifesaver to the right (checking for overtaking traffic), turn.
      Thanks 😊

    Thank you Leanna, i have watched numerous of your video now great information, in this particular video, if on a test and if it was safe to do so, would it be the correct procedure to pass a slower moving vehicle doing 40 in a 60 with enough room, or should we just hold back and be patient. (what would be expected in a test)

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, you're welcome. Imagining you are talking about a single carriageway scenario, if you feel confident to do so having sufficiently assessed all potential hazards for an overtake, you can overtake if you wish to, without breaking the speed limit to do so. However if you do not feel it is safe to do so or you are not yet confident enough to do so, usually an examiner will not necessarily mark you down, bearing in mind your status as a relative novice (you may not feel confident or experienced enough to safely overtake). If it is totally clear and there is a long and empty stretch of road with absolutely no other hazards, it is vaguely possible the examiner might suggest an overtake would have helped you to make progress, but they may not give you a fault for it. It will come down to the situation at hand and examiner discretion as to how they perceived the situation and your ability to safely deal with it one way or the other. If the scenario is on a multi-lane dual carriageway then yes of course you could be going for the overtake if it is safe to do so as it is inherently safer and easier to overtake in that particular scenario with good observations and procedures being followed. Many thanks, Leanna

    Here's a good one for you Leanna. On same test route in middlesbrough, we have (passing a, school) a 20 mph when flashing limit (in black so advisory), but as usual no info regarding when that limit finishes. However as its advisory it's no big deal once you're past the school, or see back of sign facing other way.. Vague I know. But on same route it has another 20mph when flashing (school), but this time circled red.. Mandatory. BUT.. no sign to tell you when 20 finishes, even though its a mandatory sign which means 'officially' it's 20 till you see otherwise...... Its no wonder learners and experienced get confused 🤔.

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well now that is rather odd! The second scenario definitely sounds odd. Does it have the signs on both sides of the road as the official "start of the 20mph zone"?

    • @Grahamvfr
      @Grahamvfr ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@motorcyclelessonsuk Yes it does, and as my sister pointed out yesterday (she's also an adi), it's a very short stretch, perhaps 50 metres at most, but still very odd!!

    Great video as ever. I have a question. My instructor has been telling me to ignore 20mph limits, both in local residential areas and in one case in roadworks on a dualcarriageway - what are your thoughts on this? Thanks again - Phil

    I literally never had a car drop off my back (or do anything which would help me, for that matter) just because I was making my mirror check obvious. I don't ride as much as you do, obviously though. Best videos for learners on the TH-cam.

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree that it doesn't always work, but sometimes it really does. Regardless, mirror checks which are visible are a way of giving information to other road users. They are the first sign that you are about to do something, whether it's slowing down, speeding up, or potentially moving position/ turning. Thanks for the comment 👍

      At the traffic lights, you will see the blue car in front of you has its indicator on to turn left

    • @motorcyclelessonsuk
      @motorcyclelessonsuk  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      At the time I turned left there were no other vehicles behind to benefit from the indicator (the white car in my mirrors after I've turned didn't materialise until after the turn, having come from the opposite side at the lights). That said it probably wasn't intentional. It wouldn't necessarily be a fail on the test. Depends if there is anyone else significant who would benefit from it like following traffic. Even then it would more likely be a fault, not a fail because it isn't unsafe, dangerous or inconveniencing anyone else. Good observation skills though, well done 😂
