I saw this as a kid in theaters in 97. The visuals at the time blew us away, everyone was talking about how good they were.... and TBH they still hold up REALLY WELL!
I was 17 when this came out and I worked at a movie theater as an usher. I watched this for free like 3 times back then 😆
I was about 16-18 when this came out and I watched it, gave me the chills
I guess rating system was nothing back then...
The visuals at the time? Still hold up? There still no film surpassing this one on animation, the art of movement.
I was 16 when this came out!!. My friends and I liked it so much that we decided to sneak in and watch it again. We slipped into another movie and waited until the next showing, then snuck back over lol
A movie made in 97 has better effects than many movies made today.

Models always look like they have "weight" compared to CGI because of the detail of the model and the way models are lit with real light. And the BUGS, that were CGI, were a work of art that not only looked real but moved well and to generate so many of them was crazy..

We don't like to acknowledge the existence of the sequels. That being said, Casper Van Dien (not sure on spelling) is pretty much synonymous with the Starship Trooper universe.
Let's say the sequels are straight-to-DVD "canon." The original awaits for a proper sequel. 😄

Yeah, Starship Troopers is a very cool and somewhat over-the-top violent film. Well violent enough to where it's almost cartoony. But the movie is a cult classic. And if you notice, there was a lot of underlying themes. Like those propaganda ads or the way the good guys dressed. (The SS vibe) This director has made several classic films. You should check out his other popular films which are also classics, Robocop and Total Recall. Thank you for your reactions. This was fun to watch with you....

The director lived through the Nazi occupation of the Betherlanfs as a child, if I remember correctly. So there is definitely a sarcastic, ironic subtext in the movie.
@@mrs7195 Yes, it’s very ‘tongue in cheek’ in the way it presents itself. Unfortunately, it seems like the majority of moviegoers, at least in the US, didn’t catch the obvious nature of the film. Or maybe they did & didn’t like what it was saying about them.

Despite its quirkiness this is one of the best war movies made.
~It covers everything from relationships, love, psychology, propaganda, gore, trauma, missing in action, heroism, heroes, legends, teachers, veterans, you name it..even Military Intelligence and grand policy is included. Almost every other war movie focuses on only a few of those.

I was lucky enough to support the computers used to render this movie as my first job out of high school. When they told me what I was working on I thought it sounded ridiculous but now I've seen this movie a dozen times and read the book.

Paul Verhoeven's movies always feel like parodies. He had a very unique style. I can't believe they gave him such a big budget for this. It was my favorite movie when it came out.

@AB Buenos Aires has always been more European than "latina", Argentinians are mostly comprised of Italians, British, Germans, Irish and Eastern Europeans then some Spanish and Portuguese. Is probably the whitest country in South America

I remember when this came out (I was 13) I had to get my dad to rent it for me from the video store because I was too young. Did not expect the violence but damn; ultra gory, and Dizzy gets her tatas out? Yeah 13 year old me was in heaven and 24 years later I still love this film.

I love when people feel like that with the film XD. The movie is a very free version of a novel with the same name that takes place in a more militaristic society than the real world. The society division (citizens and civilians) and the military training is partially inspired in how old cultures like the romans or the greeks/spartans organized both around the concept of war and of discipline. The use of bugs allows the plot to be more graphic against the enemy in some sort of "sandbox"; if you were to do half of what they portrayed with human or humanoid enemies... it would be even weirder.
"Why bugs!? Why there are so many?"
While the main reason is to have an enemy you can freely turn to pulp without remorse, it's also an interesting concept of science fiction: as the biology teacher explains, we think of our species as the most advanced in all fields... but if there is life out there, there will be other forms of life with other shapes, other skills, other cultures and moralities that will have more advantages over us in some ways. Bugs are seen, mostly, like a nuisance in our world; but if the had evolved like that... they would be an even more serious threath: they reproduce in numbers, they have skills that seem supernatural, and habits that would look grotesque in bigger sizes (yeah, they don't shoot plasma or napalm exactly... but there is a bug that can shoot something closer to acidic boiling water). Yup, as long as their nest is not destroyed, it doesn't matter how many times they blast the surface, they have means to recover from the damages.
"It feels... like a parody"
To an extent; any space film that came after Star Trek and Star Wars will be compared to them (while the novel was written before those franchises were general pop culture references, if I'm not mistaken; all the visual effects, designs and references were done for the movie). And the plot was made to skid along the line the gruesome of the war (most of the militaristic elements can be related to real war stories) and this kind of sci-fi spirit that lets it get a bit away with all the blood, sex graphic violence and nods to totalitarian images (it makes the "good mood" work even if you spend two hours on the verge of vomiting XD). That "this is serious... but not that kind of serious" needed to be there or this was going to be unwatchable.
"This is the weirdest we have seen in the channel"
And I guess it's not the worst you'll ever see XD. Starship Troopers is a little classic that's well done in the own limits of its stablished univers and I think I like it for that (there are two sequels, but they were released years later, and with limited reach to actually consider studios made Starship Troopers with the hopes of being a franchise). They made a bet with one weird film just hoping it worked as it was designed, and it did; that's why it's so effective and memorable.
And that would be it, it was nice to see you suffer/enjoy it; you may torture your friends later making them go thorugh the same trip XD. Until the next time, happy holidays :).
This was the ultimate science fiction movie of the late 90's. From my childhood this movie holds a special place in my heart.
This movie never gets boring!!! A classic.
This movie, which is obviously very much a parody at certain points, is actually based on a book by the very famous science fiction writer, Robert Heinlein. I believe he wrote it way back in the 1950s. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starship_Troopers). It obviously poked some fun at some of the Cold War propaganda-ish films and slogans of that time period. He actually took a bit of heat over it for some of the themes back then like, citizenship based on military service, men and women serving together in the military, free/casual sexual behavior. Things that make us blink a lot less today but were pretty controversial in the 1950's. The book really doesn't have much of a comedic flavor to it at all. I read it as a teenager in the 1970s.

Allot of people didn't understand the book either. They thought he was promoting Fascism and nationalism. When, in reality, the book was a critique of both.
@@johnmiller7682 The book was so much better. The Mobile Infantry troopers were very heavily armed and the drops were done wearing an specialized exo-skeleton, and not some type of troop transport.
It wasn't necessarily military service, But you had to serve the nation.

Movie is satire (that's probably the word you were looking for) on overmilitarized society and its almost Nazi or Soviet like propaganda. Great contrast between soldier's naive hero drive and brutal reality of battlefield.
Ya, Nazi Germany and the USSR took a lot of ques from eachother. It's shocking how similar they were. One being Racial focused while the other Class. Both tried to build a State for the Social Group that dominated their supposedly People's States. The level of Nationalism in both were crazy at times. It's terrifying when you see that they even copied eachother's Propaganda posters. The history tuber named TIK did some great videos on the subject, similarities and difference. Interesting enough NS Germany was more like the Marxist Soviet Union than it was to Fascist Italy yet the NS are called Fascist. It's why he refuses to call them Fascist, nor Marxist. They were their own thing influenced by both but took their own road.
Believe it or not, it was 1990s USA the inspiration for Verhoeven (or more accurately, what he feared of the USA evolution).
@@Alte.Kameraden You’re missing a fundamental difference between Nazism and Marxist-Leninism. While you are correct that they often used similar methods and tactics, the bases of their philosophies and rhetoric were quite separate and distinct. Nazism was ultra-nationalist, seeing one nation-state and culture as supreme over all others and demanding total allegiance to that one nation’s government and its interests. Marxist-Leninism, on the other hand, is based on ultra-internationalism (e.g. “workers of the world, unite!”, not workers of one nation, and the emphasis on the Communist International) and, at least nominally, does not demand allegiance to one nation or culture over all others. That is what aligns Nazi authoritarianism with Italian and other forms of nationalism and fascism more than with Soviet-style Marxist-Leninism.
Great movie. You should also watch Robocop and Total Recall from the same director. Also watch Highlander with the guy who plays Sgt. Zim as the bad guy.

Starship Troopers is one of my top “guilty pleasure” movies. It’s so silly and campy but so damned good.
Its like a parody of the book. And its very good.

The story behind this movie was from a book called "Starship Troopers" by Robert Heinlein, published in 1959. Heinlein was one of the greatest Science Fiction writers in the US during the 20th century, along with Arthur C. Clark and Isaac Asimov. The movie itself was meant to be something of of an anti-totalitarian rant by the director, partly because he admitted to never having read the book. Anyone who is familiar with the book can agree that this is a fun movie to watch, but it really has nearly nothing to do with the book, and in many ways, is antithetical to the book. In fact, when Virginia Heinlein, his widow, screened to movie, she threatened to sue the studio if they didn't remove his name from the project.
Yeah, as a fan of the book I found this movie to be a travesty. I hated it. Verhoeven exploited the book's popularity to make his own movie, which ignored all the points in the book that Heinlein was trying to make. Heinlein has been accused of promoting fascism in the book, but those who make those accusations obviously haven't read it. It can be looked at as a critique of communism, but the society he describes is nowhere near fascism. It can't even be called militarism since no one in his society can vote, or be a part of the government while they are still a part of the military. It's a thought experiment about personal responsibility and its relationship to societal responsibility.
This movie is basically _Alien v/s Baywatch_ with a buttload of anti-fascist propaganda.
I do not have a problem with the directors slant on the movie. Now mire than ever we needed a slap in the face to wake us up from the slide to fascism. We are on the precipice even now.

Gotta love how they made the gore look so realistic using mostly practical SFX. Didn't have CGI doing most of the work back then like they do these days. SFX personnel really earned their pay in the late 90s.
I was in U.S. Marine recruit training in 1997 when this came out. Our drill instructors would scream at us all day, but whenever they could catch a minute for themselves, they talked about this movie NON-STOP like a bunch of little girls talking about Titanic. It was hysterical, but we dared not laugh lest they squash us like one of those bugs! 🤣
I remember ditching a high school cross country team awards banquet after we won state to go watch this in the theater (we were all excited because part of it was filmed at Hells Halfacre in Wyoming and that's where I'm from). To this day I still feel we made the right choice, haha!

The part of the ship they lost 18:10 was the communication tower. It's why one of the crewmen mention a moment later that comms were down. They couldn't warn Earth about the asteroid that destroyed Rico's home. Carmon and Zander are responsible for millions of dead people, all because they were horny for each other.
Paul Verhoeven's movies are never without political commentary, often in the most over-the-top sarcastic way possible.
Robocop, Starship Troopers, they are all one of a kind.

You know, when Thor: Ragnarok came out and I saw Hela my first take was they took heavy influence from Kerrigan : Queen of Blades.
This was easily one of the funniest reactions to anything I’ve seen. Squirming at the bugs and gore. Not knowing when this shit is serious and when it’s joking. Getting emotionally attached to characters whilst being aware how dumb the story is. This movie is the good kind of bad. And you smile, as much as you get sad, as much as you cringe, as much as you laugh. It’s the weirdest experience and this reaction was great.

Love this movie! At the time nobody got that it is a satire and people lost their minds over it. Great reaction, the look of horror on your face at the ultraviolence. XD Skip the second film, but the 3rd film is more like the books and brings back Rico a good 20-30 years later.

Space: Above and Beyond should have been a much bigger hit than it was - another one of those series that the suits mistreated and let wither despite good writing and a good cast. And Kristen Cloke certainly made an impression as I still recall her nearly thirty years on :)

Of the films in this series, this was the best. It's sort of the opposite of Star Trek in that the odd numbered films are better.
Also, the armor of the Mobile Infantry is one of the most overused props in Science Fiction. It is used in Firefly and even Power Rangers.

Fun fact, this movie was considered the most goriest flick of its time. And the use of BIG animatronics was revolutionary in filming for the day.
I.E. that guy getting lifted up and slaughtered by a bug at the beginning. Yeah that was a real life animatronic grabbing him
Glad you liked it. One of the reasons why it had such a strong following was that it was a switch from the usual, 'aliens invade earth' movies. In this one, we the humans had to go to the bug planet and invade them, to keep them from launching asteroids that can blow up whole cities, like Buenos Aires.
That's the difference between this movie and your standard, aliens vs earthlings.

The movie implies (quite strongly) that the asteroid was actually launched by the humans themselves, to force them into war. We're invading the bugs' territory, they're not invading us. It's a parody of a heroic propaganda film from the humans point of view. The bugs would view us quite differently.

@@SAtownMytown Heinlein didn’t generally write conventional stories or “just a sci-fi”, and this is certainly true of Starship Troopers. He wrote it in response to specific contemporary political events, and he very much meant it to be taken as a serious exploration of ideas in political philosophy.
Also the parody style is similar to the first Robocop movie (maybe the 2nd one also)

Starship troopers was a sci-fi book that was extremely different than the movie. The movie was an attempt to refute the book that failed and accidentally validated the book, which is why it seems like parody in some places because in a way it is. The book and the movie are both fantastic though.
The book was kind of a parody of both fascism and capitalism, the author was Jewish and lived through the German occupation. The book wasn't over the top but it was for the time it was published.
@@rastiga9196 Heinlein was born in Missouri and was not Jewish….supposedly his ancestors had fought in every war the USA fought going back all the way to the revolutionary war.
Likewise the book was not parody, Heinlein used his science fiction writing to express and push his political ideology after his failed attempt at political office, and his books mirror his real life beliefs. The book itself isn’t even about Fascism, it’s about the world vs communists (the bugs) as well as a criticism of what he saw as moral decay taking root in the USA as a result of a lack of discipline.
The society portrayed, while militaristic (as Heinlein was) was ultimately intended as a democratic republic that was a highly disciplined meritocracy. There existed a constitution and guaranteed rights and freedoms for civilian and citizen alike and the only distinction between the two closes being the right to vote or hold office. Anyone who wanted to become a citizen had a constitutionally protected right to earn that responsibility, otherwise the society as a whole was extremely libertarian.

The "Bug Brain"is simply fascinating and disgusting at the same time, the director Paul Verhoeven show us one of the most bizarre things of the scifi (Ridley Scott in Prometheus did something similar with the trilobite too). Actually it is a satire with a deep meaning, that most people didn´t get when it was released. Mainly about fascist structures (for example a lot reminds of Nazi propaganda movies) and excessive militarism. The bugs stand for the dehumanization of opponents in wars, which is often used.
It's less people don't get it and more the film doesn't do well satirizing it. The bugs are meant to stand for dehumanization, but the film doesn't humanize them and in the real world every human kills actual real world bugs. Paul needed more than aggression and fear to make common movie-goers feel like they aren't just bugs.
Similarly, he needed to show the ways this heightened Fascism is bad.
Show us legislation the Citizens passed that has a serious negative effect non-Citizens.
Show us how people are being oppressed.
Show us protests and how they are being shut down.
Show us climate catastrophe.
Show us war on earth between the Gov and rebels.
Show us bigotry.
Show us something.
But Paul shows us a voluntary military, non-Citizens who are successful and outspoken with their disdain for Citizens and voting, races and sexes being equal, military leaders taking public responsibility for military failings, unedited front line war coverage, and no bad things happening with the people on Earth because of the Government.
The three surviving protagonists succeed in their respective careers and end the movie happy and arm-in-arm.
@@yodieyuh Verhoeven doesn't satirize it well because he didn't understand what Heinlein was talking about. He even said so himself. He thoughts the concepts Heinlein was discussing were boring, so he just made space Nazis.
All the problems you brought up weren't any more prevalent than in other advanced societies. Citizens didn't oppress civilians. Everyone had the right to become a citizen through service. The government had a responsibility to find a way for you to serve, even if you had disabilities.
Citizens weren't some aristocracy. They were held responsible for their failings.
They weren't bigots. As evidenced by a white male Marshall being replaced by a black female. They were meritocratic.
They weren't fascists. Civilians had the right to engage in free enterprise.
They were free individuals in a free society were people were responsible for their own actions and everyone was treated equally. If you commit a crime, you are imprisoned. That isn't oppression, it is the adequate consequence of your decisions.
You don't really seem to understand the points Heinlein was making either. You just see Verhoeven's SS like uniforms and say "Oh, these must be supposed to be bad guys."
I don't think that Heinlein was specifically trying to make points. It's speculative fiction. What would make a society like this work? This book is the answer. It's just that when you actually list things out it sounds really fascist, so Paul Verhoeven beat you over the head with the comparisons
Citizens absolutely were an aristocracy, just not a hereditary one. They were a group of people who operated with a wholly different, expanded set of rights compared to civilians. They absolutely were bigots and intensely militaristic and expansionist. However their militarism and bigotry were focused outwards from humanity. Or do you not recall them raiding the "Skinnies" (there's a stand-in for a racial slur)? Go look back on the motivation for that raid. It basically boils down to "Because we wanted the land."
Fascism has nothing inherently to do with free enterprise. It has to do with the supremacy of the state. In the case of the Federation: Serve the state, get more rights. It's that simple. YOU certainly don't understand the points that Verhoeven was trying to make. But that's mostly because you obviously don't understand what fascism is.

Killing nearly 10 million people in response to a private human venture into unknown territory that had nothing to do with the Federation isn’t justified. We know the bugs are intelligent at least proximal to humans, so it was a wilful act of murder.

The whole point of Starship troopers is it IS a parody, not of sci fi and movies but of the whole idea of nationalism and jingoism running wild. It's a friggin masterpiece, the cringyness is entirely by design :)

It never has been a parody and it plays the book concept's template very well, written by sciFi master Robert A. Heinlein (1959).
Exactly. It's also worth noting that Paul Verhoeven was a child during the German occupation of the Netherlands in the 1940s, and lived under fascist rule during his childhood. He has very anti-fascist, anti-corporate messages in most of his films, with the big 3 being Robocop, Total Recall, and Starship Troopers

@ The movie literally is making a mockery of a fascist society, the director even said as much when he did a pre-show, including talking about how the society uses Nazi imagery (something that nearly got cut from the film).

In the book, Dizzy Flores (a man) died literally on the first pages - one of the few in that battle. Karl (a scientist, not a telepath) also died. Their idea that the Terran Federation will drink from the Brainbug made me laugh. I immediately conjured an image of a bunch of soldiers running with sharp straws. And greedily slurping from them.
