But, if your world view doesn't consider animals to be moral agents in the same way that humans are moral agents, then that sort of rationale is incompatible.
Helldivers is absolutely hilarious. They've taken a lot of clear inspiration from other sources like Starship Troopers, Star Wars, Warhammer 40k etc and I love it.

8:34 An important thing to note is that the Federation literally can't turn a person away as long as a doctor proclaims the person competent enough to understand their decisions the Federation by law must find a way for them to serve because it's every civilian's right to serve for citizenship. That being said they do everything in their power to hammer it into those enlisting just how bad it can get, in the book the main character meets the recruiter again and the recruiter has a pair of cybernetic legs(paid for by the Federation) and the recruiter tells him that he takes them off when recruiting to make people physically see a potential consequence of enlisting.
Nationalism can be a tool for absolute manipulation and thats the whole point of the movie, they are showing what it can do to people and turn them from scared, caring beings with a consciousness to cold-blooded machines with a black heart
Give people a flag, a reason to fight and a sentiment of duty and they will learn to make hell their new lifestyle

The source work was written shortly after WWII, when people assumed the city was gone forever, and well before Hiroshima reinvented itself as the party capital of Japan.
But the original novel does not mention that city, but instead Carthage. The change is said to have been done because most people wouldn't get the reference to ancient history.

It still had to be rebuilt and it was one of the two attacks that caused the Japanese surrender. An example of something violence solved.

Paul Verhoeven movies are epic. Very underrated director who made iconic movies.
The irony?
The society in Starship Troopers is how we in Europe (or at least in my country) believed the US society was back then, in 1997, with all the patriotism, good looking people and military. Turned out the (European) director (who also did Robocop and Total Recall) created this movie as a social commentary _on_ the US, portraying their society and military in an over the top way to make people realize how much similar their society and military looked to this movie and how _wrong_ it is. Didn't really convince the people in the US, but in Europe we appreciated this movie a lot more.
He even designed their uniforms to look like German uniforms from WW II, which, together with the military propaganda shots, reflects how he looks at the US military; no qualms, power hungry and bending the truth (the bugs aren't even a spacefaring species, so why would they even bother waging war with humanity at the other side of the galaxy? Yet, they're called the enemy that's trying to invade Earth to justify the war).
As for the sequels, they don't really are sequels. They play out in the same universe, but they're hardly worth your time - as sequels usually tend to be.
Not true. Veerhoven confirmed that the asteroid was sent by the bugs (wich breaks physics, but whatever), and the bugs were on Klendathu, Planet P, and the planet that the Mormons landed on. They're space faring.

Michael Ironside ("They sucked out his brain") is a Canadian treasure. I love that dude. I also love this movie. The satire and Nazi-like imagery is great. And if you don't care about any of that, there's lots of explosions and gory violence. It's win-win!

Or is it the idea that valuable things should not be given away for free, because that makes them less valuable, and the cost to acquire something is an integral part of its value?

I saw this in the theater way back. The funny thing about that "sucked his brains out" line, is that by the time it came in the movie, the audience had moved passed the campiness of the movie. Nobody was really laughing at it anymore. I think they had invested in the stakes of the overrun outpost.
You might enjoy the director's other big hits, Robocop and Total Recall. The latter one is one of the best sci-fi films ever with Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone to boot.

the actress who played Diz, also co-stars in a movie with a young Keanu Reeves called "Johnny Pnuemonic". Ice-T also co-stars in it. the movie is a love it or hate it, i happen to love it. it's futuristic with it's storyline...and i love that type of shit 😊
Johnny Mnemonic is the spelling of the title. I love it, too. Parts of it are a bit silly, but who cares? It adds to the charm, somehow. To me it's a cyberpunk classic but it seems to be mostly forgotten by now.
Dina Meyer should have gotten many more roles than she did. I love her in Johnny Mnemonic and Starship Troopers!

Oh it's enjoyable, but Verhoven didn't know what he was doing, because he only read the beginning of the book, decided it was boring, and gave it to his assistant to figure out the details. As a result, he tried making a satire of fascism out of something as far removed from fascism, as possible.

This is a side note that occurred to me when you said "they need bigger guns", well "bigger guns" happen as both dialogue and bigger guns in this Creature Feature SPLIT SECOND; it's a fun flick with a few familiar faces.
On Starship Troopers, I'm glad you had fun watching this movie.
Casper Van Dien has one of the most chiseled jawlines in the world, you could cut glass with it. He's 55 right now and still looks amazing, and his daughter Grace was in Stranger Things season 4
Also, in this future, only Citizens are allowed to vote and influence government policy/run for office, as they have served the country and earned that privilege. Non-Citizens are still 'citizens' of the nation, and can still accumulate wealth and such, like Johnny's parents, but they don't get to vote, they just have to accept how things are run, as their money holds no sway over policy or government. It's not a bad system, to be fair, although obviously military service shouldn't be the only 'service' one can do to gain Citizenship.
Ooooh yes, that makes sense. I kind of missed a lot of those types of details! Hahaha and totally agree about Casper Van Dien's jawline... it's next level.
In the book, military service is not the only option available. In fact, if you are mentally capable of understanding and accepting the oath taken for citizenship, they will find a service that can be performed regardless of physical disability. The main points of service are that the work is in service to the Federation (as the term "service" implies) and that the service will be unpleasant or dangerous. Service is meant to weed out those that seek to only serve their own self-interest.
@@maplenutsreact Not surprising you missed it - Verhoven didn't read the book, because he thought it was boring, and as a result the film is sending mixed messages - Verhoven's attempted satire, and Heinlein's actual ideas.
The gist of it is: democracy failed, because people became convinced they could get something just by voting for it, and ended up electing slimy politicians who promised them things.
Heinlein's idea is that the cost to acquire something is an integral part of its value - if the right to vote was just given to everybody, it would lose its value. But if you have to earn it, it becomes valuable, because you paid for it with blood, sweat, and tears.
As for the service - in the book you don't get to choose (though you can list preferences), and only the best get combatant roles - the rest are given "all sorts of dirty, nasty, dangerous jobs" to make them either quit, or remember that their citizenship is valuable because of the price they paid.

The problem there is thinking that money would have no sway over the government, when human beings are involved. Same reason communism sounds effective on paper but will never work in real life.
This was a fairly interesting movie. Verhoven was making a statement about fascism and the kind of sick parody of the original Novel. He stated he had never read the book. Heinlein wrote the original book as a protest against the "peace at any price" crowd that was against nuclear weapons in the late 1950's. The book really is more of a tome about service. The US military Academies have it on their reading lists. Heinlein was a graduate of the US Naval Academy and was dismissed from service due to health, but served as a scientific researcher during WW II. He never shirked his service and was a patriot. But on the other hand, Verhoven had lived through Nazi occupation during WW II in the Netherlands and first had witnessed the consequences of out-of-control patriotism. A lot of Americans don't see the parody and take the film literally.
Fun little easter egg in helldivers 2: one of the planets in the game is named "Klen Dath II"

I saw this twice in theaters, back when my town had a second run theater. So, I saw it on the opening weekend, then saw it again when it hit the cheap seats. The thing about it that pissed off a lot of fans of the book Starship Troopers is that the movie is based literally around 4 or 5 chapters, didn't have the power armor from the book, and didn't reflect the Federation of the book. Paul Verhoeven took the story and made it a parody of fascism, which is why it is very, VERY campy but also very dark, dire, and you never know which character is going to get killed next.
For example, notice that all of the officer's uniforms are almost carbon copies of the Nazi SS uniforms, except grey and without an armband. Also, Carl becoming distant from the humanity of the conflict and seeing the extermination of the bugs as the way to win, much like a certain Austrian and his pals saw the extermination of a certain type of person as the way to win...
That's the thing about Verhoeven's films that don't get him any awards and actually more often than not gets his stuff critically panned, but a few years after the release, they become cult classics because people all of a sudden "get it" with the point he's making with his movies. Robocop was all about if a person turned into a cyborg keeps their humanity. Total Recall was all about segregation of types of people, and the barrier between reality and memory. Starship Troopers is all about "What if the Nazi's had won?"

iv seen this movie so many times over the years, and it still surprises me how well this movie special effects holds up for a 1997 movie.
The teacher with the metal hand is Michael Ironside; he was the big bad in Highlander 2, so you have both Highlander villains in one movie!
Don't forget, Clancy Brown, from Highlander also voices Mr. Krabbs In Spongebob haha.

fun fact: if Carmen wouldnt have been so flirty and changed Xanders navs, the ship and asteroid wouldnt have collided, thus redirecting the asteroid, and subsequently causing it to hit Buenos Ares.
all of the death of Klandathu and following battles can be traced directly to carmen being in heat and not being able to manage her actions. unfit for duty, she ought to have at least some administrative punishment for all the misery and woe she caused.

The more I watch this, the more I realize Rico has an amazing support system around him.
Micheal Ironside(the teacher, Rasczak) is legendary.
He can deliver the most ridiculous lines with such intensity and gravitas.
My whole family love this movie!! Ive watched this movie so many times to count lol. Ive met Casper (Rico), Dina (Dizz) and Jake (Ace) and they are all the sweetest ever! Just lives up to this day and so underrated when it came out and so happy people are loving it now.
I hadn't seen this in years so it was the perfect one to join Patreon for! I've listened to the unabridged audiobook several times over the years and Verhoeven knew what parts would work for a film adaptation.
Would you like to know more?: In the director commentary on the Blu-ray and DVD Paul Verhoeven stated showing the mutilated bodies on FedNet was to encourage more people to join the Federation, the cow being censored was due to PETA animal supporters, and the experiments on the Brain Bug were censored as it was classified information.
More ammunition was used in this film than in any previous movie. According to veteran weapons coordinator Robert 'Rock' Galotti, the crew expended over 300,000 blank rounds during the course of filming - a personal record at the time.
I like that when they are explaining something important about the politics in that world. The movie distract you or interrupt it, like the teacher in the classroom scene or the shower scene.

Weird. I have watched my first reaction to Starship Troopers on a whim just yesterday (also have first wathed it as a kid way earlier than I should have and having faced my fear in early adulthood) and here is a channel that I am subscribed reacting to it. Might have been one of those circles on the water when somebody is making a thing re-emerge and then it has chances to come at you bouncing from multiple directions. I have seriously considered not watching this one so close to the previous because... well... you know the feel. But I have and I was not disappointed. Nice reaction, guys.
And as for what I would like to see... I can not just give you a genre, but there are particular movies. "Cloverfield" (2008), "Rush" (2013), "Godzilla" (1998), "Stalker" (1979), Battlestar Galactica miniseries, you can not go wrong with Terminator 1-2, The Green Mile, The Sixth Sense, No Country for Old Men, Back to the Future - those are all very beloved staples of cultural significance. Plus the next installments of The Lord of the Rings and Alien franchises. You choose ;D

I just saw the bit where you commented it reminded you of Ender's Game, the book. This is based off a book written in the 50s by Robert Heinlein, considered among the great sci fi writers like Ray Bradbury and Arthur C Clark. It is possible that the author of Ender's Game, Orson Scott Card, got some inspiration from that novel.

The usage of the term "Administrative punishment" for a whipping makes sense.
In the US military, there are two kinds of formal punishments, "Non-Judicial" and "Courts Martial"
A non-judicial punishment might reduce your rank or result in confinement, but doesn't count as a criminal offense. Anyone subject to non-judicial punishment has the option of requesting a court martial instead.
A court martial conviction almost always results in conviction and discharge ,and the criminal gets a felony conviction added to their civilian criminal record.
Before Halo, before Helldivers, to me this was the movie adaptation of one of My favorite games ever, QUAKE II. Check the cinematic intro for that game, you'll see it.
Oh! I've never played QUAKE ll, but we were talking about giving it a try recently! Halo and Helldivers 2 on the other hand, we're both very much in love with haha

Interesting theory about this movie is that Federation high command was actually the ones who annihalated Buenos Aires to get a 100% public support for the invasion.

The best answer I can give with what's in the movies is the plasma bugs launching the asteroids, which is explained in the movie, but... that still breaks physics in so many ways. You'd have to ask Veerhoven for the movie answer because the book answer is that they have hands and can build ships.
in the 90s our school posted grades. it was completely normal. Everytime after a big tests the grades were written on a list, and that list was posted in school at aspecific glass box in the hallway.
Also, later in University the grades were posted the same way on the respective hallway where all the courses were taught.
The book actually focuses more on the military psychic program's development with the infantry as background information.
There was a full-size prop for the brain bug, but it was also CGI sometimes. The only type of bug that was never CGI was the one they dissected in school.
A rather big difference between this and the book it's based off of is that all of the mobile infantry actually use exo suits. The novel helped to inspire mecha animes as a matter of fact. So without this we probably would have never got Gundam, or Robotech/Macross.
FYI: The animated sequels had power armor.
I don't have a movie suggestion but I do have a show suggestion if you decide to do that again. It's 4 season's long. The first 3 season's are 10 episodes. The 4th and final season is 8 episode's. The show is called "Banshee". It's a unsung gem of a show. It never got the attention it deserved.

The Sgt. doing all the training is the voice of Mr. Krabs in Spongebob, a big character in the Shawshank Redemption and a major character in the story game Detroit Become Human. Unless I missed it, did she ever realize the whole movie was just war propaganda? One of the biggest clues in the movie that the narrative was a lie is when people were discussing that "we" attacked the bugs first and they are just retaliating.

This was considered a "B" movie when released but to this day holds up and is still a better sci-fi than modern ones. Perfect film imo.
The card effect is one of the easiest to do. It was a spring-loaded electric motor with a rubber wheel spinning fast that shot them out.
Chandra kind of reminds me of Julia Stiles, who is beautiful. I'm glad you both loved the movies, I love my physical effects because they everything look so much more real with the miniature models

This is one franchise where the first movie is pretty much ALL of the best part. There are sequels, and a CGI TV series. I'd kinda give them a pass, honestly. If you want a totally obscure comedy martial arts movie to react to, check out Kung Pow: Enter The Fist, from about 2001. This movie has me in hysterics, no matter how many times I've seen it. The voice acting is top tier ;)
I'd like to see you react to more sci-fi / fantasy, which was really big in the 80's. Conan the Barbarian, Excalibur, Dragonslayer, Krull, Legend, Neverending Story...

So, the thing to remember when watching this is that it's ALL a propaganda movie (a satire of one, actually). That's how things like Carmen being IMPALED through her shoulder can happen and she's laughing in the next scene with her pals.
The Bigs didn't bomb Earth with a meteor- how could they? They're on the other side of the galaxy and have no ships or FTL travel- plus they made a point of showing that Earth has that huge defense ring of guns to shoot down meteors.
It was a false flags- the government did it to unify society against a common enemy.
Did you notice how the news channel had graphics ready as soon as the attack happened? All prepared in advance.
They purposely made the "Federation" uniforms very close to Nazi uniforms to show the audience that, yes, you're rooting for the Nazis. The humans are the bad guys.
It's also worth noting that the main characters are from Buenos Aires- and that the population is almost all white and English speaking!

All the things you mentioned are simply continuity errors without deeper meaning. The bugs do attack Earth, except in the book they have spaceships and full FTL technology. Making them mindless insects in the film created a plot hole.
And the false flag makes no sense - in the film the society has endured for many generations, there is no civil unrest, no one is organizing protests, and the state is not on the verge of collapse - read "A short, victorious war" (book 2 in the Honor Harrington series by David Weber) - totalitarian countries go to war as a way of perpetuating their power.
Here, the Federation has absolutely no need to "unite against a common enemy", and the reason for fabricating an emergency, is to enact some emergency measures - none are introduced - service is still strictly voluntary, you can resign at any time with next to no consequences (you just never get to be a citizen), and there was no shortage of recruits before the meteor strike.
I just watched again today. It's one of the best sci Fi movies ever.

Hell of a flight team, funny. If she hadn't changed the course they probably wouldn't have had to avoid the asteroid. Part of the three major Paul Verhoeven movies that kick ass. This one, Robocop, and Total Recall. The sergeant from bootcamp was also in "The Shawshank Redemption". A great drama you guys would love if you've never seen it and if not, definitely add it to the list to react too.
Sorry that this is long but something that isn't made explicit in the movie but is an important aspect - you can be a member of the society and be important (look at Johnny's parents for example) but to vote or hold ANY political office you must be a citizen. To do that you have to do a service for the greater society and the quickest but highest risk way is military service (other paths exist though). The idea is that if you want the chance to influence other people's lives, you HAVE to put your own in someone else's hands. You have to know what it's like to serve as well as command.
The teacher is telling the class that democracy failed because citizens could just say 'I want this' and vote for people who said they would provide it, there is no investment so liars, frauds or idiots can reach positions of power. Any idiot can vote for any stupid idea without any personal stake. If you MUST sacrifice blood, sweat, and possibly life for society, you are much more careful that the society is worth sacrificing for.
One correction, though (but don't kick yourself over it, that's how most people remember it). In the book, you can't choose your service. You swear an oath (which includes a line about upholding, and defending the constitutional liberties of all citizens, and other lawful residents of the Federation), and then you are given 48h leave, and if you change your mind, and don't come back, that's that.
Otherwise, you'll be assigned a service based on your aptitude/preferences, and it may end up with you being a menial worker - that's why it says "no less than 2 years, or as much longer, as may be required" - because if you end up as a truck driver terraforming Venus, or something, you'll be at it longer than 2 years.
You can also get kicked out for things like disobeying orders, or failing your physical (but you don't have to accept the medical discharge - there's a guy in the book who didn't and ended up as a cook, but still proud of being in the army). In most cases, if it's without prejudice, you're allowed to finish the tour in non-combatant jobs. Only things that end with a Bad Conduct Discharge, and potentially court martial are bad for you.
And spot on about the faliure of democracy. Heinlein says people became convinced they could get something just by voting for it.

Well, to answer Chandra’s question at the beginning: I would love to see more Jackie Chan reactions. I’m a huge Jackie Chan fan (as well as a martial art films fan in general), and it always irks me that most Westerns know Jackie Chan simply from the Rush Hour films. This most likely is from the fact that Rush Hour requires no subtitles and is set in a Western context 😂.
Regardless, I hope the two of you branch out a bit and take the unbeaten path of TH-cam reacting and embrace more interesting and international genres.
Movies like Jet Li’s “Hero” are quite the gem, and I am sure both of you will appreciate the choreography in Jackie Chan’s “Drunken Master 2” (the first part is not required watching at all). Also, “Oldboy” is a great Korean thriller that has a phenomenal reveal at the end.

From what I remembered this movie did not do well in theaters when it first came out but thanks to the magic of VHS and word of mouth it did really well when it was released on video and kind of became a cult classic. Kind of a cross between a B movie and a big budget sci-fi flick.
