- The Nintendo Wii had a tremendous amount of shovelware, and in particular, it had a lot of racing games. Most of those games were kart racers. However, today I'm looking at a collection of 6 "realistic" shovelware racing games on the Wii. These games basically pretend to act like franchises with some notoriety. They ripoff NASCAR, Grand Prix Legends, Need for Speed, and a variety of other intellectual properties. If you had any of these games when they were new, then I'm sorry. But either way, we can enjoy them for their comedic stupidity. Also, it turns out that I was dumb and didn't record the gameplay footage with any filters on my mic. I did everything that I could do with it in post to make it sound good, but there's still a little weirdness with peaking and things like that. Bad audio for bad games? Consider it an artistic choice, like filming something in black and white because the subject is about a historical event. Anyways, enjoy.

I remember having Build N Race, every time I went to build a track and went to test it I would softlock… “great game!”
I never really understood how to actually play it and remember thinking it sucked
V-rally could do it on the PS1, GRID could do it on the DS, so it wasn’t the hardware, it was just plain incompetence
I actually LOVED that game, building a track was my favorite thing to do!
Had the Build NRace game, played it a few times with my brothers, a bit easier to control with nunchuk than tilt controls. Seeing you clip through stairs and vault off the track at every decline was a good hit of nostalgia for me.
I remember I had Build N Race. Hated it but the manual booklet was like "these are the backstory of the characters and their vehicles match it" and LJ's is just "He's a fair cop in his mind" and one dude's whole bio is "He likes to cruise in his Camaro from highschool"
BIT OF BACKGROUND about SUPER PICKUPS
· It reuses assets from the PS2 era of Milestone games (makers of RIDE nowadays) - All tracks used in the game had appeared in games like SCAR, Evolution GT (SCAR's sequel) and Superbikes Riding Challenge (prequel to Ride and semi-sequel to SCAR). There are 3 very different types of tracks in those games: real racetracks (Hockenheim, Valencia, Donington Park, Albacete, etc), real street circuit (Milan, Berlin and Barcelona) and fantasy tracks that mostly use the shapes of real circuits (you can find Imola, Kyalami, Nurburgring GP and Phillip Island if you pay attention). The game itself seems to be heavily inspired by Australian utes combined with the couple of muscle trucks that arrived to Europe during the 2000s (Ford F150 SVT Lightning and Dodge RAM SRT-10).
I was gonna comment about this. So much of the game screams "Milestone", from the very first second I thought it looked like a PS2 game then realized it pretty much was just a PS2 game ported to the Wii, and reusing assets from a few PS2 racing games I've played when I was a kid too...

The massively successful Maximum Racing: GP Classic Racing is a virtually unchanged Golden Age of Racing, a budget-tier 2005 game.
Circa 2007-08 there was a promotion here in Hungary where some General Mills cereals had racing games in it if you bought a pack of 5 and somehow that thing was one of the games alongside genuinely decent titles like Total Immersion Racing or Ford Racing 2.
I mean Ford Racing 2 isn’t bad for a cereal box game, in fact I’d say it’s a damn steal
In Portugal I think it was the Nestle cereal who had the games but they would come individually. 1 box = 1 game. They had Ford Racing 2 which was awesome, Crazy Taxi, Total Immersion Racing and Starsky and Hutch
If you're up for a sequel video, I'd be interested in seeing licenced shovelware racing games (things like Bigfoot Collision Course, Indianapolis 500 Legends, even M&M's Kart Racing).

You are quickly becoming my favorite racing /NASCAR game content guy on TH-cam. I just love your sense of humor and the way you articulate is amazing. Nobody else is crazy enough to play these games on TH-cam except for you and it's highly entertaining cuz I never knew of them cuz I never had a Wii. Now I want to get a Wii just so I can play them!!!

For some unknown reason I'm starting to really appreciate Wii racing games like NFS ProStreet, TrackMania, GTI Club Supermini Festa! and even Cars...

Build N Race feels like a wannabe Trackmania with NOS and Collisions... That's probably why I liked it when I was little. Probably one of the reasons I got into Trackmania in the first place along side of Trackmania Wii. This was a fun video to watch! Thanks for the laughs

I had Build 'n' Race as a little kid! My grandparents bought it for us because it has an award on the cover (can't remember what but it definitely wasn't reputable). I used to spend all my time building custom tracks that only I would understand so I could win. The AI would all fail the jumps/trick turns and crash. It was the funniest thing to 9-y/o me. Glad to know that the game is unplayable and it wasn't just me.
So, after you build your track you have to do a verification lap on the game right? The devs of the game made it so that if you played a race on your custom track, the AI would follow every line of your verification lap, down to your crashes (if you had them). Funny af

Super Pickups is actually a modified version of Corvette Evolution GT.
That and that Suzuki TT motorcycle game and the Alfa Romeo one

I bought build and race through the scholastic catalogue in early 2011. I think that’s all you need to know about it. Thank you for giving me a twinge of nostalgia by reminding me of this lukewarm kiosk sandwich of a game.

I actually loved build and race as a kid. It was one of my favorites. I probably put hundreds of hours into the game. Not because it was a good game but only because it was one of the only racing games I had. Still because the nostalgia of it all it holds a special place in my heart
Played the game a ton too back then, sometimes I even revisit it. The track builder was the major draw for me.

As soon as I saw the XS logo and BF Goodrich sponsor on the Super Pickups cover, I could tell from my experience with DT Racer that we were in for some serious stinkers.

Both GP classic racing and Drag and Stock racing are PS2 games btw. They originally had different names too and we're both made by Midas entertainment, gp classic was golden age of racing and maximum racing drag and stock was race way: drag and stock racing. So those two were possibly plagiarised or even re-released under this company
I actually have Maximum Racing on Playstation 2. But its a different cover on the box, it’s actually the cars that you play on the cover. Remember loving it when i was a kid.
Oh! Another great suggestion is NFS hot pursuit on the Wii. 11 year old me genuinely believed that thethe Wii version would be identical to the X360 version. It was not
the philips head screws are actually just black tape over the glass sealed beam headlights. a common thing in vintage racing.
I was blind to the horridness of Crash Car Racer and actually played that game for like, hours. On that second-to-last track, if you went down to the U-Turn fast enough and actually turn into the wall, you could actually climb it and go up several feet (or meters, respective to where you live) in the air thanks to an invisible wall being there

I remember playing Golden Age of Racing or GP Classic Racing on the PS2 and thinking that the physics for a cheap nasty bargain bin game about single seater racing was pretty good. I mean there wasn't many other games at the time where you could climb over people in a crash like you'd see in real life. Then I played Noble Racing, another game they made based on Sports cars, and I seem to recall you could climb over people just as easily...
The first game I noticed in this intro hit me like a truck once I noticed the publisher. They’ve released other types of shovelware games on the PS2 I think. You should check those out when you can! I remember I had one game from that publisher when I was younger! DT Racer and DT Carnage! Feel free to check those out if you plan on looking at shovelware PS2 racing games! There’s an Indy 500 game for the Wii you should try, it’s actually not too terrible but it is a Wii racing game, worth checking out though!

I've played the PC version of "Maximum Racing: GP Classic Racing" where it was called Golden Age of Racing (also on PS2). And it's actually a great game. Don't know if handling was changed for Wii but crashes still look superior to those of Codemasters' F1 2010-2022.
Probably better on the PS2 where you could actually have analog gas and brake functions.
Build N' Race was interesting, I remember building tracks of my own and then purposely driving terribly when finalising the tracks so that I could clap the AI every time LOL
Holy hell. I used to play a different racing title by Milestone (the developer of Super PickUps) called Evolution GT on the PS2 as a kid, and I played it a lot. I noticed that like 70% of the assets on Super PickUps are recycled from that game - menus, HUD/UI, game engine, tracks, start sequence, physics with some slight tweaks by the looks of it, even some of the AI driver names. Looks like Evolution GT with trucks, no intimidation or rewind mechanic, and no Gabriele Tarquini.
The GoldenEye gag killed me 😂😂
What I see now is that Super PickUps shared the same gameplay and some race tracks with (Corvette) Evolution GT due to the same developing team.

An actually good game for the wii that I highly recommend is Excite Trucks. Literally the most insane, badass racing game I have ever played.

GP Classic Racing was also on PS2 and I happen to have a copy, same with Dragon Stock Racer, and I believe there was other games made by this company

I know f1 09 (official licenced by the FIA) was released by codemasters on the wii but it was so poor it could have been classed as shovelwear

Also, Crash Car Racer looks like Stock Car Crash on the PS2. Very similar, I thought at first glance it was a port for the Wii.
I'm pretty sure Crash Car Racer was Stock Car Racer on the PS2 in PAL, I kinda had fun with it back in the day

I had another game of the caliber of these, but it actually felt fairly competent, it had a 1970's Toyota Celica.. Remember trading it in for a copy of Mario Galaxy, because I was getting to the point where the game got too difficult for me to play at 9-10 years old. Wonder what that game was called...

NASCAR 21 Ignition is still really broken. Heat 5 is actually better.
the cover for the PS2 version of super pickups is even more misleading, since it's literally a flipped image of trucks at martinsville.

GP Classic Racing is a directly copied and pasted port of "Golden Age of Racing" for PS2, published by a completely different studio! It wasn't good on that console either.
