- After discovering what could have been a very serious issue, we set out to find parts to make the repair, before heading out for our first 'all by ourselves' test sail, which doesn't exactly go to plan.
With the boat all ready to go, and our buddy boat ready to lead the way, it's D-day as we finally set sail for our maiden voyage, in an attempt to sail our new to us, catamaran all the way down to Perth.

Wow what an amazing video….so many things I had never thought about. Food, fuel. Finding dump points - the non fun stuff. Seen all the exotic cruisers but never explained.

Wow guys, you're only new to this and you're planning to do what scares the pants off seasoned Aussie yachties. Sail down the west coast of Aus!
Take your time in protected waters first, make as many mistakes as possible, laugh and learn.... Fast!
Also as you begin your journey always plan for multiple anchorages along the way, just in case if or when shit happens, you've got somewhere to pull into to take a breather.
You've got so very much to learn, keep safety as your number one rule so you live long enough to learn the rest.

Hey, yes we have been told that we are a little mad, crazy or both to plan such a big sail down the west coast as complete newbies to sailing. Maybe the fact we didn't realise it was such a big deal was a good thing so we didn't get scared off the trip, but yes we will have to learn very fast and will do everything possible to stay safe as we want to enjoy many years of sailing in the future. I personally have sailed the east coast from Melbourne up past Cairns more times than I can count. I've never sailed the west coast but I do have intentions (once my legs stop shaking lol).
Its obviously on an old yacht, so I'm assuming the entire yacht is "aged" and that's completely fine, BUT you must be prepared for when things you don't even know the name of yet, break!
If I can offer a little advice. The biggest "safety issue" with modern day sailors is their reliance on electronics. Please don't do this.
You're going to face plenty of on shore storms of over 50 knots with very few safe anchorages to choose from. Your electronics are going to fail, that's guaranteed. So you must learn how to navigate and stay safe when you're completely alone, and you will be! The west coast of Aus is NOT the most populated place on earth haha.
Make sure you have paper charts for the entire voyage and tide tables (paper not electronic.). Tides are huge up there so an understanding navigating with tidal allowances is essential. Learn how to read them. Get or make a lead line so you can judge the depth when pulling in to shore at night and your depth sounder is not working, example: www.jollyparrot.co.uk/blog/using-a-lead-line-453
Then you can use the depth on the charts to get a fair idea of where you are.
Also buy yourself an old radio direction finder, these things are almost bomb proof and you can triangulate your position almost anywhere around the Aus coast.
Buy a held held bearing compass, these are invaluable when shit happens.
Please make sure your life raft is up to current specs and installed correctly, hopefully you'll never need it, but when / if you do, the last thing you want is having to try and dive down to cut it loose from a sinking boat.
Get a sea anchor, in the old days we'd use a few weighted and drilled tires, cheap but did the job in a bad storm. Today there are various options but stay away from the complicated ones cos if their only slightly complicated when it's calm, they become down right impossible and dangerous in storm conditions.
Make it a rule to wear safety harness at night regardless of the weather, during the day if winds are over x, or if you're alone i.e. your partner is sleeping.
Honestly I'm nervous for you!
No doubt you'll have a great time and see some amazing things, it will be life changing.
But what you're doing is akin to buying a pair of training boxing gloves and getting in the ring with Mike Tyson. You're going to get beat up! So get very well prepared.
Wow, you have done a lot of sailing and that makes it sound even more scary if you haven't done the WA cost yet and we are just diving right in.
Thank you for all of the advice, we have in some instances got some of the things sorted that you mentioned, but of course will do our best to be as safe as possible. We do want to make it home.

We used to say 7 times through Bass Straight and you're automatically an honorary skipper regardless of age or education.
But out of all those "honorary skippers" very few have sailed the west coast of Aus.
The biggest issue with your planned journey is the lack of safe anchorages and ports along the way. On the East coast that's a non issue. Also on the East coast the winds are blowing you away from or along the coast. On the west it's opposite, so a lot of the time you're being pushed towards the land. Keep this in mind for engine failures, rudder failures etc. it's why sea anchors / drogues are a must on that journey.
So you will have to be extremely well prepared. The actual sailing part is easy, you'll both become good sailors within days/weeks.
Try and grow together, swap jobs/responsibilities between the both of you. The more familiar each of you are with everything on the yacht, the safer you'll be. Once you reach the stage that you can both sleep like a baby during strong winds in the knowledge that your partner can easily handle it. Then you're almost bullet proof.
One things for sure, once you've done this, THE WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER!

You appear to be getting some sound advice here the wife and I sailed from Perth to Darwin many years ago on our mono so a much easier trip than the one you are undertaking. The hardest leg for you maybe along the Zytdorp cliffs (around 100 miles) with no anchorages. Our coppy of the Fremantle cruising guide was a great guide at the time. Best of luck.
Yes we are def being given a lot to think about!!!! Yes we have heard that area around Shark Bay can also be very unpleasant, fingers crossed for some decent weather by the time we get there!!!! 1. Did you have a marine survey done on the yacht before you bought it?
2. I dont know how much sailing experience you have, but it looks like zero having watched this episode.
3. Ive done a lot of boating, not sailing, and believe me, things can go wrong pretty quickly.
3. Your planned trip would be a challenge for experienced sailers.
4. I trust you have your life jackets, emergency beacon & all the safety gear in easy reach.

1. yes we did have a survey done as part of the sales process
2. We have some boating experience but zero sailing experience as you picked up in the video
3. Hahah yes so we have found out 😜
4. Yes we have that close to the door most of the time, so its easy to reach should we need it, if the jackets are not already on
