      While I absolutely love the footage I achieve with my Ronin-M, I use my HD-2000 for select projects, as every tool has its purpose! When we are in harsh weather or have to hike/bike miles out, it's the glidecam all day. I also bring my glidecam to every shoot that I use my Ronin-M just as a backup, since it'll always work. Great video as always Matti!

      I started with a glidecam but moved to a gimbal once they became more affordable ("affordable" on a professional level LOL). BUT you just made me miss my glidecam with this video, though my cheap cametv single is pretty epic for a little gimbal (but def couldn't handle the weight of a 1DX)

      TravelFeels Also have a old mighty Glidecam HD-2000 aswell as a Ronin-M. It’s great how fast you can start shooting with a glidecam. Those extra few seconds for a Ronin for turning on is not equally nice as a glidecam thats always availible. Pros and cons with both, but I’am very glad that i kept my HD-2000, which is so easy to stabilize as you get use to it.

      the old xr 2000 gets pulled out time to time depending on situation and conditions. I said id get rid of it once I got my gimbal but just couldn't let her go, glad i didn't. xD

    Glidecam is the way!!!! It's got such a natural movement to it, I rock the same exact one, got it 4 years ago
    Edit: Interesting to see how you hold it. I've always held it very loosely with 2 fingers above the bearings to make sure it doesn't get out of wack or whatever, kinda just a guide. Never knew you could actually put your other hand to practical use by moving it from left to right

    This is some great information, and I know this is an old video now, but I wanted to address a negative about gimbals that you had. When you said (9:18) "probably the biggest reason" was that you have the quick release plate on the stedicam, but can't do that on a gimbal. You can. I just got a gimbal. The DJI Ronin-SC for my Canon M50. I use it with a Neewer brand quick release plate, and it balanced just fine. So long as I don't switch lenses (which you have to rebalance regardless), I NEVER have to balance this thing again. It folds up just fine, and balances VERY nicely with the quick release plate, so all I have to do is snap the camera on it, unlock the arms, and turn it on and it's ready to go immediately. I don't want you to think I'm being negative about your video. I really like your stuff. You are very informative and I've used your gimbal videos as tutorials on how to use them in the field. I also own a stedicam. A $100 Neewer brand one. It works just fine on DSLRs, as well as my M50 and M3 with the quick release plates. It's just not as high of quality as Glidecam lol Works fine though, and I love it.

      practice practice practice! i had it for about 2 years until i finally found the right balance. but if your setup isn't heavy enough, take some weight off the steadycam weight thing and shorten the lenght of the weight arm or however it's called. you'll find a way for sure!

    It is a great point about electronics Matti, I can't imagine how short the batteries would have lasted while you were in the polar circle! :-P I'd still take a gimbal over a glidecam any day. Used a glidecam system for nearly 8 years and the moment I tried my first gimbal, there was no looking back. I may actually do a giveaway of my current glidecam if there's enough interest. Just because I no longer use it doesn't mean someone else shouldn't!

This is my first Glidecam and it's a huge step up from my $50 Amazon Stabilizer. I didn't believe that I would find one locally, but they're out there. You just have to keep looking!

  • @tkaz123
    @tkaz123 6 ปีที่แล้ว +80

    A Steadicam is the brand of Gimbal, much like how Glidecam is also a brand of gimbal.
    What you’re referring to is the preference of a mechanically manual gimbal stabilizer, over a mechanically motorized gimbal stabilizer.
    In short, a Steadicam IS a gimbal. This is the kind of misinformation that is plaguing the TH-cam filmmaking community.

    • @KoolKyle_Adventures
      @KoolKyle_Adventures 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      thomaskazuya we still call the old school manual gimbals "Steadicam" because that was the first brand to introduce them. By default, pretty much every camera operator refers to the portable electronic 3 axis gimbals with follow focus, as a gimbal...in short.

      Terminologies also evolve. While technically true , things change over time. It happens forever in the industry. For example I am going to make a record. No one is making a record today--yet the terminologies has not changed. Another example is CUT. Cut is only for film, you do not cut anything anymore--still we use the terms. They change because language evolves.

It will hold up to about 6.5 lbs and was easy to balance. The only drawback I've noticed is the plate doesn't attach easily to the base, and the left/right adjustments are inconvenient.

    Gimball is just useless for weddings for example.
    _ Gimball takes more size
    _ It'll always be less reliable than a glidecam since there is electronics in it (even if it's high quality gimball) and batteries
    _ it is heavier
    _ it's much more expensive
    _ it's more for short movies, sport movies, outside creative movies in general. During weddings, a large part of the shots are shorts and on monopod. You don't have to run and move all around all the time, just remember it's not an action movie, it's a wedding. Creativity is more important than movement.

    Back in the old days when digital 8mm was the new, in thing for consumer/ prosumer, I started using my Bogen monopod as a steadycam. With monopod collapsed I would hold it by the wrist strap. Not strapped around my wrist but with strap in my hand with at least an inch between hand and monopod free. I still use it today .
    Adjusting a little of the monopod leg out or in will adjust the balance to the weight of the camera.

    I am just planning to buy a glidecam... I'm traveling a lot, and realized the gimbal is too complicated to use in many travel situations, also to sensitive to take care of it all the time... So, nice timing with this video, thanks Matti! I also have a Came TV Optimus for sale in Budapest, if someone is interested... :D

    Lol I literally just bought a 50 dollar Steadicam, and have had nothing but trouble with it.
    I still think that they look better than gimbals though, guess I need to save my pennies to afford a better one once I return the other one! :)

    You’re shooting at a high frame rate, so the shaking and side to side doesn’t show when you slow it down, how ever when you shoot with a only 30fps camera, that’s an issue, we don’t have slowmo

    Back in about 2011/ 2012 I think it was, I bought an Indian version of this on ebay for about £130, even with the dedicated wrist support it was impossible to use anything past 30 seconds, the pain on the hand, wrist and arm were severe, sold it after a week, Matti, you must be superman!

    I use the Flycam Redking and it’s only $200 with free shipping. One thing I found out about using a glide cam is that first your wrist and arm gets really tired but if you practice every day you get used to the weight. Just walk around your house and practice on everything!

  • @jbx907
    @jbx907 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    you don\t need a gimbal or steady cam really, most of your clips/videos are slow mo, i don't really see any point or benefit of any stabilizers if you tend to shoot high frame rate and use 1-3 sec of footage per clip in your edits lol. i seen better edits that make proper use of stabilizers, gimbal or steady cams. After all they both will work, 200usd for pipes and metal weights id still get a gimbal, you don't really need a stabilizer hand held will do since you only take 1-2 secs of high frame rate clip footage. I though i heard natural, slo mo is not natural, i have not seen a normal frame rate with placing your camera on a tripod, show us some real gimbal wrok no slo mo pls
    auto focus is so bad for a 6k camera though.
    i like the hotel and still like your videos just my 2 cents

      The Cinema Monologues - dang what are you watching??? Haha, I’ve seen movies shot with gimbals, and you probably have to, and didn’t realize it. It’s all about making the story the main focal point and making the audience not aware of the camera movement.

    One thing not mentioned in this video which Matti used throughout is the use of slow motion (Recording at higher frame rate then confirming to lower project frame rate) which always makes shots look smoother and less bouncy.

    Man, feels like I've gone back in time! I used to own the Glidecam HD 2000 and have the HD 4000 laying around. Switched to the Ronin when it first came out and now using the Zhyuin Cranes. One thing that I've learnt from using the Glidecams is that the way you walk and approach your shots are very important. And the skills I've learnt from using the Glidecam has made my gimbal work even better. Thanks for the upload!

    Love it guy, I'm pro steadicam as well. I purchased a motorized gimbal only to outweigh it when I upgraded my camera. On the plus side I'm not worried about breaking the damn thing either, they are built so solid! I get additional weights from the hardware store to balance mine perfectly and scratch the settings into the metal so set up is easy! just adjust everything to the settings I have for different lenses and its good to go!
