For 700 pounds I would definitely look for a Junghans Max Bill, a watch with true Bauhaus DNA. The Miyota Sternglas models however are quite nice and much more reasonably priced...
Great video Ben, and you are right about the price, but I guess because it has a Swiss Made on it they think that it justifies the price. It does have a really nice movement, and it looks like it might be their top grade with the blued screws and all. Thanks again for the honest review, Brian.
Isn’t the cap on this channel around $400 why review a watch that’s almost a grand if it doesn’t fit the niche of great affordable watches? Just curious.
I am huge into movements, but like my wife has said "you look at the front of the watch and around the sides of the watch not the movement majority of the time " I tend to agree. A watch needs to look and feel premium to match the movement and price. Otherwise, you're not going to wear an ugly ,to you, watch regardless of how nice the movement is or how much you paid for it.
My Sternglas watch is 2 years old and the crystal has started misting up since it got splashed in rainy weather last month. Should I send it back for repair to germany or get it repaired by an independent in england? Paying money directly to a German company has become difficult because of Brexit, to the extent that Sternglas could not sell me a new strap. Thank you.
I have the Tiaga 38. Love the look at it.......however.....the inside of the crown extends beyond the back of the case, so every time i put my hand in my pocket and pull it out- it catches the crown, pulls it out and stops the watch. While i love the watch, I can only use it as a decoration - I can never trust that the time is right. This structure looks similar- could be an issue
A Max Bill With a hand wind movement starts out at $450. This watch has a better movement in the STP. This watch actually has better specs across-the-board except water resistance which is equal at 30 m...The problem is the asking price at over $700. Considering the decorated Swiss movement They would probably sell like hotcakes for anything under $ 500. Thanks Ben for another great review!
For slightly less money, I would much rather choose the Tissot Carson Premium Powermatic 80. The build quality is actually Good for the price Due to the fact that it's an actual swiss watchmaker. Plus, the value of the watch will hold much better because it is from a brand that has a long rich watchmaking history.
Agreed, Tissot and Mido dress watches put this to shame, especially at grey market prices. I like the design of Sternglas but they are putting Miyota 8215 in their $450 models…😅
Great review as usual, keep up the good work! As for this watch, I have to say I personally like the design. Some minimalist/Bauhaus-inspired watches do nothing for me, but this worked. However, not worth the price IMO. Like others have mentioned here, with the Max Bill Junghans (which I drool over from time to time) with true historic heritage to Bauhaus AND similar price point, there's no discussion. And lots of other good affordable alternatives have been mentioned here as well. It's simply too expensive - hence Uncool!
I was sooo excited when I first saw it on their website but then there's the pricetag... Sorry but that's a no no for me... You could get like two watches with a 2824 movement for that price. I like Sternglas, but the pricing is just way too high on this one. Great video!!
I've tried a couple of their models while stayed at Germany (my brother in law owns both of them). While they're certainly very attractive and have not bad specs, like many here pointed out they are definitely overprice for a 5yo microbrand. You can easily get a reliable minimalistic watch from other established brands for the same or less amount of money. If they would've sold Naos quartz for let's say $150 USD, I'd certainly say that it's an interesting proposition, but for $275 I can't justify it. It really doesn't offer anything that others can't for the money.
@@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess I was talking strictly about the price justification. In case of a well-established brand you get the name heritage that validates a purchase for a lot of people. You get a more reliable QC. Frequently an in-house movement. Warranty service around the world. Sternglas offers none of that but commands a much higher price. For what?
@@educationprogramassistant5518 I understand......You mean like the lackluster QC of the well established company called Seiko?..second hands that Rarely ever hit the indices on their quartz and solar quartz???....., while charging premium prices? Respectfully., I'm not trying to be mean, but your logic is flawed. To each his own though. Cheers.
I agree that Sternglas is overpriced. The point you made that they do not retain value is actually a plus for me. This means that if you really like the design you can always go second hand. I believe that you get a fair deal if you get any of the models for half price. Meaning 100 quid for the Quartz Naos, 200 quid for tha Marus or automatic Naos and 400 quid for the Kanton. Just be patient and you will get those watches at those prices.
I do not agree with the comparisons made in this video. This watch looks much better than the one from The Fifth. Even if the movement used in both watches is the same (which I am not sure if it is), the movement in the Sternglas is decorated with blue coloured screws. While I have not seen either of the watches in person, the Sternglas watch also seems to have an overall better finish for the case and the strap. And even though both are microbrands, I think Sternglas is a more premium brand than a fashion brand like The Fifth. The comparisons with the Naos from Sternglas (which I own) fails to mention how the Kanton has a much better finish and a much better movement. The case thickness is also significantly lower compared to the Noas. These can at least partly justify the increase in price. Of course, the Kanton costs almost twice as much as the Naos, but the Kanton is also meant for a more discerning customer who will appreciate the differences. It is true that the Kanton is in the same price range as watches from Junghans. But Sternglas is not the only microbrand selling watches at that price range. Comparing the Kanton with Junghans Form A, the Form A does not seem to have a decorated movement, and while this is subjective, I find the Kanton to be the better looking watch overall. Unfortunately, Sternglas has built a reputation for offering watches at a particular price range, and a lot of customers seem to find it hard to accept that they are slowly launching more premium watches. Most of the people criticising the comparatively premium pricing of the Kanton also do not appreciate the improvements over other models in the Sternglas range, like the Naos. I am seriously considering buying this watch, and I currently prefer this over a Junghans Form A.
Well this watch has a STP 1-11 inside which belongs to Fossil and is a clone of the ETA 2824-2. The ETA is a Rock Solit movement which can be found in watches in the price range from 300-2000. (In the higher price points it has been Modified.) About the Fossil Movement I cant say anything. If Fossil is using it for their own watches u can Grab one for 200-300 €. I would recommend the Max Bill automatic. It uses the J800.1 caliber which is a modified ETA28242. (Not blanc as sternglas is doing it) Price point 750-850 (depends on where u buy it) Same looks basically and a watch which has also some story, heritage and is made by a well Known brand. JUNGHANS was founded 18XX (forgot) and was once the biggest watch producer in the world. Good german Company. This sternglas is not a crap watch. But it is way too expensive.
Sternglas doesn't even produce itself - Chinese companies do that for it. You can just buy directly from a Chinese company. Sea-Gull, for example, makes excellent Bauhaus-inspired watches for 150-200 €.
The design of this is IMO better than the Naos. If it was the same price as the Naos, I would be somewhere between cool and ice-cold, but for this price, I'm going uncool for sure.
Sinc I can only judge this watch by how it looks on my tablet, I can't see paying 700 quid or even $700.00. Maybe if they move the decimal point one place to the left, I might consider it.
I've referred to the microbrand world reaching critical mass on other watch channels and I think that this is a perfect example. Nice looking and well-featured watch, but at that price? No.
I feel like if this watch was maybe around 300$, it would be a premium or upgraded fashion watch, since the design has many similarities with DW and the like.

This one however, I think I'm tempted, as I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive everyday watch. Thanks for the heads up young sir.
Hi guys! I'm new to watch, I love the design of this watch and almost at the verge of buying it. It have pretty much every think I look for. Clean aesthetic bauhaus style, automatic movement that I can see. And under 600usd which is my maximum budget. I really like the junghans but they are too expensive and we cannot see the movement. I really like the design of the junker 6060 but the fact it's not saphyre crystal turns me off. Any other recommendation before I buy my first automatic watch?
The placement of the date window is dependent on the movement, not the watch designer. The bigger the dial, the farther inwards will be the date window. To have the window replace the 6-hour marker, the watch will have to be a lot smaller in diameter than it is currently.
People are saying it should be 300, but if it were 300 they would be making too little money. I estimate manufacturing costs at maybe 275 because that movement does not come cheap.
Honestly Ben, don't you love this watch... you're wearing???? Had to go through, almost the end of this vid just to realize i had mine on my wrist! Oh feather Lorus! Love it! PS. As for this cool(ish) wanna be Max Bill (boy that "4"...) get it between uncool and cool (unicool???LOL)
Have you checked out the Seagull 1963 yet? Probably the most affordable mechanical chronograph, it is Chinese but built with Swiss machinery from the 50's to this day. Watch out for fakes tho, yes the Chinese fake their own brands..
I like it, but it is about $550 too expensive. The junghans max bill is $250 cheaper than this watch and it's eta2824-2 movement is far superior to the STP 1-11 from the Fossil group.
£700 is too much! I'd see it around the £300 range, but nothing more. The dial looks plain to me and the overall design isn't standing out enough for me. I give them credit for the Swiss Made. But the 5th looks way more upscale, especially with the applied indices.
Cool, ish, maybe, if I squint, but too damn expensive! Especially when a Junghans Max Bill, which is way more iconic, and obviously has that Bauhaus look absolutely nailed, will set you back less than £500 in its three hander incarnations if you shop around. So I'm afraid the Sternglas is *only just* cool, and only because I'm in a good mood. You know, you'd see it, and think "nice watch", but if you're more into watches I don't think it represents good value, especially not given how derivative it is. Actually, thinking about this a different way, Rolex must be the most copied watch brand in the world, and I've nothing against any of the homages (I'm close to buying one), but even the most expensive (think Steinhart) are about a tenth of the price of the equivalent Rolex. Well imagine if the homage cost 50% more than the real Rolex? How ridiculous would that be? I feel the same way about the Sternglas versus the Junghans. And, on that basis, I'm going to change my mind: uncool.
Honestly I don't get warm with Sternglas. I have no problem with new brands with no heritage for low price. Dough I feel like there are daily hundret kickstarters for "unique" watches, by people who has no tecnical relations with watches. Just some young hipsters who want to make a quick coin. And most you come across with, are "Bauhaus" Design. Which is a synonym for "We have no Idea how to build or design a watch. Just make it as simple as possible and call it Bauhaus. It's even cheaper in production." Many of their watches just look so simple and boring that they could be also any watch from Ali or mvmt. Maybe because they let many of them produce in China. Bauhaus Design is not about saving money on effort. It's a design language and a sience. Junghans lived it and made it in perfection. Junghans has
The case resembles those on many Chinese watches,my understanding is that 'Swiss made' always appears below or adjacent to the six position not above.Uncool......................
Love the watch I really really like it but the price is absolutely out of control and ridiculous it should be between 4 to 500 would be more reasonable
Hey Ben, great review and production on your video :) Luckily for us, the cheaper Naos has a much more unique and attractive design. Sternglas are on to something because there aren't many German style "Bauhaus" watches with sapphire glass out there besides the much more expensive Nomos watches (maybe Stowa too?). Kanton has a beautiful and probably more accurate movement, but it really doesn't make sense to try to incorporate them into their watches... I doubt it's going to sell much, especially with that bland design. I still think the Naos is a bit overpriced right now at 369 euro... will keep an eye out for coupons or big sales, maybe the next time Black Friday comes around. Can't think about paying more than $300 for one.

Beware of STP: while prettier than the ETA it clones, it also uses a few plastic parts that makes it much worse...
Make the watch smaller, around 37-38mm, and the dial will look better proportioned.
34-35 is the perfect size.
I like it, but it is about $550 too expensive. The junghans max bill is $250 cheaper than this watch and it's eta2824-2 movement is far superior to the STP 1-11 from the Fossil group.

Nooooo - STP 1-11s have a very high fail rate. I'm 2 for 2 fails when nearly new. Many others with equal results.

Price is to high but that's the going rate for what u have unfortunately
Uncool, I like more the Naos
Honestly I don't get warm with Sternglas.
I have no problem with new brands with no heritage for low price. Dough I feel like there are daily hundret kickstarters for "unique" watches, by people who has no tecnical relations with watches.
Just some young hipsters who want to make a quick coin.
And most you come across with, are "Bauhaus" Design. Which is a synonym for "We have no Idea how to build or design a watch. Just make it as simple as possible and call it Bauhaus. It's even cheaper in production."
Many of their watches just look so simple and boring that they could be also any watch from Ali or mvmt.
Love the watch I really really like it but the price is absolutely out of control and ridiculous it should be between 4 to 500 would be more reasonable
i think the design tries too hard to be inoffensive but ends up lacking some flavour and character for that kind of asking price
Hey Ben, great review and production on your video :)
Luckily for us, the cheaper Naos has a much more unique and attractive design.
It looks like those Fillipo Loretti, etc...
Looks suspiciously like the first Braun autos
