What we don’t often hear about in the mainstream media is the growing wealth gaps that are destroying the middle class all around the world. This is especially true for India, which has the third largest number of billionaires in the world after the US and China. But did you know that the richest 1% of Indians own over 40% of the country’s total wealth? How do ordinary Indians feel about this wealth gap and their top 1%? Our Asian Boss reporter hit the streets of Delhi to get some local insight.

Anyone who's rich, but not quite rich enough to afford their own compound and police force needs to be humble.
She's also right that the rich will not give up their power to improve the situation of the less fortunate or to have a more equal wealth distribution. This may also be why establishment media try to blame foreign countries or try to create division between countrymen based on religion or political affinity; do the common people will fight amongst themselves or blame their situation on anybody but the rich and powerful in their own country...

I Believe Indian's is a big thing since India is a big country . As far as i know many of the Indian's outside India are into IT or medical. Then there maybe people who are into Blue collar jobs

I'm British Indian and im in croatia, my tour guide was talking to me about how all the Indians he's met here are so rich and he was saying how the western media only shows one side and that is the poor. But I said there is also a massive wealth gap. I think you would always find that in countries with massive populations.
"I am British-Indian", one of the problems, is being a British-Indian supposed to lift you above others!!? this sentiment, lack of confidence and self-respect is one of Indians problems, which again lead us to CULTURE.
Rich to a European doesn't mean Rich in Indian context, Europeans when traveling around and see people who are poor living in 120 square meters flat while they themselves live in 35 square meters flat if lucky, they consider that being rich, to you, to Indians, Being rich is to have more than others, a stomach which will never be full!!
Indians traveling to Croatia for vacation are of course the wealthy ones...the gap between rich and poor in developing countries are huge. 10million USD will make you a rich person in Europe whereas this will be considered 'cute' among the rich community in developing countries. The tour guide is obviously short-sighted thinking that those visiting Croatia represents entire Indian people.

My answer to his video can be explained in a single sentence - The rich become richer and the poor become poorer and the only way to get out of poverty is education in India
Education can get you out of poverty but there is no guarantee it will make you millionaire.....

My mom used to teach in primary school. Her salary was just 5K INR a month(1-2 years ago). While school earned in Lakhs they paid their teachers so little.
Edit: That's not it. apparently they used to wire more money in teachers accounts and later ask them to withdraw some % money & teachers had to give it back in cash. It's not just one or two schools. A whole bunch of them do that.
And government teachers get 90 Thousand per month in Delhi, PGT teacher those who teach 11th and 12th.

Just like you can't compare india with other country because of cost of living. You can't compare every indian, region to region cost of living varies significantly.
Both Mumbai and Kolkata are considered metropolitan cities but have vary drastic difference in their cost of living.

I think it is also important to distinguish where these people are being interviewed, in a metropolitan area. As we all know there are vast vast disparities in the welfare of the people in say cities versus those stuck working in rural areas through farms/factories.
100%. I'm living here in rural Tamil Nadu, myself having no income for the past year surviving on random donations, and the hourly rate of our fellow brothers and sisters in the villages are so low.
Though yes, they manage to survive in their own way, it is unfortunate, from experience and observation, that we cannot thrive in our true selves constantly trying to gather the basic materials.

No offense but most of the Americans are lucky because the $ is the reserve currency and you guys have H1b visa . As you can print money whenever you are in crisis so it becomes a secure trade for different countries but if dedollarisation happens then this would be horrific for US citizens . A girl using OnlyFans in USA earns more than the highest paying software engineering job in India, so this explains a lot. If it was the other way around then you know the answer.
In 2019 USA's 79% wealth holds by top 3 percent. USA has lots of opportunities but cities like new york and Detroit, schools and being black are life threatening. If you want to study, take loan and work 10 hours a day. Village or small towns have less opportunities to grow or come out of loop. And don't want to talk about los angeles:/

It's a myth that India is poor and dirty. It's also a myth that we're very rich. There is a huge gap of wealth and a big reason for it is the population among other reasons.
Its not myth that india is poor and dirty. If you take a train from one city as soon as the city ends then you see how poor and undeveloped india really is. Or just go to government hospital or take train in general compartments. There is fictional india created on social media that we are doing good and all etc
But reality is higher percentage of india is still poor considering the population of india.

The taxation regime in India is meant to help the rich. The highest tax slab is 30% for somebody earning over 15 Lakh & 30 Lakh. 30% slab is bigger burden on the 15 Lakh guy than the 30 Lakh. Also health insurance in India is private & is also taxed at 18 %. The terrible taxation regime & low social welfare investment are the largest contributors to inequality in India.

As an Indian I’m 32 y/o, I own a small school, I make approx 10L in Tier 3 Indian city .. I just want to convey my fellow Indian youth… Its better to focus on yourself first… enhance your skills and dive into the new challenges, take risk don’t afraid. Most of the talent comes from Middle class.

Not all Doctors are successful,There are tons of competition in Medical fields.People only prefer doctors with high success rates over normal ones.
I think his thoughts were sort of conservative, his idea of "working hard" doesn't really apply in modern days, in past times their was less competition and they could make it through that, but in present day we need much more than just hard work

Education, Education, Education. Education is so important. You can not stress it enough. But sadly, people do not see it that way. Following your dreams, start-ups, dropping out of school/college to do something out of the ordinary, it all looks charming. But that too is also from people who have some backing. If you are not from a strong background, only education can help you. Of course, there will be some you can make it even without education and family backing, but they are the exceptions, not the norm.

not just education, its mostly a particular course, like CS, or MBA, other than these, you don't really need education for becoming a salesperson or a communicator. Education is not the solution. Problem is India lacks the diversification of jobs. Farmers wont become engineers, but they can switch from Farming to say other blue collar jobs like manufacturing
Being from a lower middle class tribal family, I think the only way to get to the top is through govt services with the privilege of reservation. Other than that, it's really tough. In words people say you can do whatever you want but it's not always possible in reality. A good and strong foundation is required to become a successful businessman. Even if you have the idea, finance is the problem and banks won't give loans to poor people.
Its not Government Job but Private Job. Private Job are far better and easier to get.

True! What is rich in tribal community is actually poor in mainstream communities. I'm surprised to Bengali, Marwadi and Bihari businessmen can pay hefty amount of money for business store rent in city centers. Plus they have connections, cheap labourers, experience, etc

No! don't conduct interview in the Himalayan region. They will come for our land and cities. We are already facing the brunt of unwelcomed tourism, illegal trade of land and destruction of our extremely sensitive ecosystem as a result. We'd like it very much if the non Himalyans stop building their luxury hotels and stays here..stop littering when they come as tourists and stop cutting our forests. EVERY MONSOON THEY COME HERE...do die in landslides. The environmental disasters are getting worse and worse every year because of the tourism industry and most of our wealth comes from the agricultural sector anyway so I don't understand why they are allowing so much uncontrolled tourism. Most Indians I've met can easily converse in atleast two languages. Most middle-class and above families choose to send their kids to English medium schools, so a significant portion of our population has had education in English.
Fun fact, we had a house helper who didn't have any formal education (she didn't even know the Earth spun on its own axis and around the sun) who could fluently converse in 7 languages: Santali(her tribal language), Bengali, Hindi, English(she was catholic), Nepali, Bhojpuri & Assamese. She is truly a genius.

English is spoken widely in India. The majority of Indians can speak more then 2 or 3 languages. It's also because of the large diversity in India.

The doctor and the guy with glasses both pointed out how casteism affects the reserved and non reserved people. I believe that they were both right in their own opinion. There's sure a lot of poor and low caste people who still dont even have the opportunity to get education and this mostly happens in villages. At the same time there's reserved people who exploit this privilege to such heights that they accumulate a lot of generational wealth and can provide their kids with a lot of opportunities and misuse the reservation given to them.
Name one millionaire who used or as you said misused reservation to accumulate wealth in entire india. The guy in glass and the doctor said is about true indian-ness. How rich became richer and poor become bhikari.

I am impressed by how articulate, thoughtful, generous and humble these interviewees are! I am also shocked at how little an Ophthalmologist in India earns. In Australia they would be on $350k minimum.
The purchasing power of currency also matters. The person was earning 2.5 lakhs per month which is more than enough to have a great lifestyle here.
In india, if your earnings are 30k usd, you can live a great lifestyle because a lot of things are less expensive compared to developed countries.
@@akshatsingh5528 I disagree. An ophthalmologist in Australia can enjoy a MUCH higher standard of living despite having much higher costs. Things like iPhones or BMWs are actually more expensive in India.
@@IdanKashani That's because those products themselves are priced higher in India due to various reasons. Also, he still has a better standard of living than 95% of Indians. (Which I assume is comparable to opthalmologists in other countries)
Cost of living
Indians of previous generation have suffered a lot meeting even daily needs but gave their best to next generation to make ends meet, most of the current generation can meet the regular needs without issues so the upcoming generation can ease a bit and turn towards exploring business instead of struggling to meet the needs, hopefully they take right steps 🤗
Inequality is not bad thing . That is also the reason why India produce so many high skilled workers and entreprenuers . If they are won't be any inequality there won't be incentive for them to grow .

Thanks for this content. In this day and age, critical thinking is not something that the media promotes, especially in India. Your team has done a brilliant job at capturing the pulse of the youth on this topic. This is exactly how interviews should be conducted. Unlike the circus that we witness all the time in other media channels.
People. It may be true that a MacDonald working dude may earn more than a eye surgeon in India (which is highly arguable though). But you need to understand something called PPP (purchase power parity). That is to afford a similar lifestyle of eye surgeon in India in the United States. You need to be making more atleast 150k in USD.
I think now hopefully those stupid blatant comparison will stop.

10% owning 60-70% of wealth is common occurrence in a capitalist country.
The issue is that Indian economy overall is smaller so the 30% wealth left for 90% population is very small compared to developed country

It is incredibly humbling to realise a basic worker in a 1st world country earns more than an Eye Surgeon in India. Very interesting and smart responses. The be happy with what you have mentality is something that everyone should adopt but also the equality in education and necessities for all should be addressed as well so everyone can reach that base level of living.

Accent is subjective and depends on your surroundings, where you were brought up, English or regional medium, parents etc.

I think Asian Boss Indian team need to evaluate their interview processes, they ask questions in English and hope for replies in English. But English is not Indians mother tongue. Asian Boss should communicate in local languages and then use subtitles for viewers to understand, just like they are doing in other nations.

And now even though we had more sophisticated and superior language (Not saying morally, in general Sanskrit and Dravidian Branch languages are much superior compared to its European Greek, Latin Branch counterparts.) we have to speak and that is cuz of diversity of India. Good governance is about how the government help the bottom of the population. Not just giving them money, but more about the conditions that many interviewees talked about, infrastructure, education, medicine, etc.

Those are some surprisingly healthy attitudes and well articulated views from a lot of different people. Maybe India really does have some massive potential for the future. If you had done the same interviews with random people in the US... I doubt you would have gotten such interesting and diverse opinions.
They are so knowledgeable and speak so well. I'm an overseas born Indian, and I earn in a week what that doctor earns in a month, but those interviewees speak better than me, and what they are saying is the right thing. The Indian economy will grow and gradually the people will become more prosperous.
But the things here are cheap also
I think a separate video with interviewees belonging to the economically lower strata of the society will be equally interesting and insightful as well.

I think there is a huge divide between the rich and the poor in India that people rarely address. And I have faced it in real life because I am a kid from a middle class family living in South Delhi. The exposure kids from rich families get, the social circles they hangout in, the perspectives they are exposed to aren't something you would see in families below the rich class in India. Going to the mall for shopping for them is like going to vegetable vendors for us. Besides that, the gatekeeping makes it worse for other people to survive.

First of all, there are going to be more billionaires the more populated the country is. Having said that, is very cruel that their salaries are that low. They deserve better.

It’s also important to point out india is a very affordable in terms of living standards for all income ranges. It ranks 3rd in terms of PPP. So a salary of 40,000-50,000 INR a month will be a good enough salary for a family of 4 to get by.
You can survive on ₹100-200 a day if you are from the lowest strata.
Unfortunately if the wealth distribution was better we could afford far more to improve our living conditions like the developed countries uniformly.

This is a interesting perspective, everyone discusses inequality between the mega rich and everyone else but in India as you said the gap between the poor and middle class has been greatly reduced. This is a huge improvement. You see it in big cities where there are barely any beggars now compared to just ten years ago.
My dad's salary is 200$ per month and we have to take care of all expenses in that.
I stop working from some years cause of my weakness I had to leave many jobs because of that, now I'm still weak but I can stand properly now so I will start working by end of the month.
Need to fix lot of things don't have any savings but I'll make everything stable in next two years.

Many high skilled workers move to US, UK , Canada etc where they were getting good opportunities . Many entreprenuers move to Dubai , Singapore and other places to setup their business there due to anti-capitalist policies of that time in India . But from 1980s-1990s onwards we started reforming our economy and today we are fastest growing economy . By 2047 , we would become a developed high income country if things goes well .

There are too many stereotypes about poverty in India that need to change. Today this country is an unstoppable force. The GDP, infrastructure, education and quality of life in general is improving for all. The change is not restricted to a few. Every generation gets better than the earlier for those willing to put in hard work. In a span of a few generations the poor change their status to reach middle income. The people are intelligent, sincere and are hardworking. The huge population fuels the domestic economy and growth.
These are not enough tho. The lack of jobs, increasing wealth gap, frozen wages and GDP per capita are still huge issues. Prices are only rising while wages remain the same, but every year The National Budget allocates endless benefits to bureaucrats and upper middle class people. If people don't realise it, we won't improve.

The per capita income in big cities is 10x more than the national average and still it's just enough to pay for the basic needs like house, electricity, education, food etc. The reason a lot of Indians these days decide to migrate is not because they don't have food to eat, or they can't survive in India and migrate as a last ditch effort, they do that to earn enough money to enjoy life as well , the salaried class that is.

My household monthly income was around 5k during my engineering and a 50k per month salary (although not as high) felt like a dream to me at that time. Now I'm earning upwards of 50k but it still doesn't seem enough. We really need to maintain a minimalist lifestyle even if our income grows exponentially. Otherwise your spending will just increase linearly with your income. And that's not good. Learnt it the hard way.
Now I earn more than 1 lakh. There was a time when I earned 9k. The happiness I had in those days is not there now. 😊 when salary increases expenses increases proportionally

Most of the rich people I know have acquired their riches in last 1-2 generations. so, the rich/middle class families are expanding in India. Sure, the income disparity is increasing but if a decade back two families were earning 10k and 20k per month and now they are earning 20k and 50k pm(without inflation) it's improvement for both families. This is something people often miss when talking about a poor country turning into a middle-income country.
Also there's a big difference between wealth and income. Rich people often tend to be better at finance and savings(This is the reason they are rich in the first place).
