Voultar I need some help with this. Back in 2002 a buddy of mine who spent way too much time in Korea with the army brought an original PS1 home. It had a mod that plugged into the serial port on back and just stayed there it was about the size of a pack of cigarettes his PS1 played DVDs... what was that?
It could be the fact that the Mayumi chip uses the PS1's own internal clock signal to drive the timing so it's more accurate as long as it's not getting any interference when the likelihood of that happening with the way he installs those chips is very minimal. The Multi-Mode chips use the PIC's own internal clock which is accurate enough to work most of the time but can fail on rare occasions forcing a system restart to get it working again as I have had to deal with for my MM3 modded PS1s that I installed. I use MM3 in my gray systems mostly so I have the ability to disable the anti-mod protection and the chip itself to test certain things. My chip installs aren't as clean though as I like to put the chip in a socket that is easy for me to access so I can swap out the chip if I need to like I recently did to see if a chip I had flashed was working before I installed it in another console. I rarely install chips for others but I am doing this most recent chip install for some kids next door which is still going to be a surprise for them but I'm still waiting for a new memory card to arrive so they can actually save their games once they get it. By the way Voultar I only recently found your channel and I'm liking what I'm seeing so far and will consider some of your methods the next time I do a mod chip install. I destroyed 3 PSOnes trying to install a chip using those "other" diagrams you mentioned mostly due to my lack of soldering skills but I did finally manage to get a working install with two of the wires being soldered directly to the drive controller chip so that gave me a nice confidence boost especially when I'm only working with a cheap 30W iron I got from a local hardware store and who's tip really doesn't last very long before I just can't get it to hold solder or heat long enough to do what I need to do with it but being cheap it's easy to replace when that happens.
I am going to be doing a PSone MM3 mod here in a few days. I was looking at the diagram for the SCPH-50xx series and I remembered this video. The diagram looked horrendous, I'm glad I found this video again. This will be my first actual soldering job with a real soldering iron. And this is also going to be on my childhood PSone. I know I'll get it right thanks to you!
What you say about practicing with fine pitch soldering is absolutely correct, but many people will be afraid that they'll mess something up when doing so and ruin a working unit. What I recommend, is to find some free or cheap broken electronics to practice on, so if you mess up, nothing is lost. Old car stereos are great for this, they have lots of SMD chips to practice on. You can also sometimes find bulk lots of old PCI cards on eBay, which also have SMD components, and if the lots include LAN cards, the option ROM sockets offer the chance to practice desoldering DIP chips.
I can't believe you only thus far have 1.2K subscribers. You are obviously the best/one of the best at the art. I am a career master auto tech and I insist on quality, nothing but. People are super loyal too because of this. I like your style amigo. To me the "art" of sms is like learning a kata. Learning how is quick, but technique and grace only come with a bunch of practice.
Quality over everything. I like things to last too. I'm just a humble dude fixing bicycles for a hobby but I've gotten many loyal "customers" that have moved over from super expensive crappy quality techs on this city. Rock on quality!
Wonderfull , a piece of art your skill are, i remember doing My first and last onechip on a PSone , i burned like 4 chips (the one time burn type) and only one worked , all because My laptop wasnt suppling enough power to the serial Port so the chip didnt burn correctly, the last chip i burn it on a PC and it worked. I struggle , i was a newbie, but had little solderin skill and in the end it was all worth it. I still remember the first time i booted a copy of crash bandicoot and i almost cry XD. THANKS , like your vídeo and brought so many nostalgic memories. I Wish a was a kid again. Note : i also owned the original crash bandicoot Game.
when i modded the old playstations there was no youtube to learn from...would have been so much easier ;p soldering with fat..no flux...broken iron tips... too much heat when knocking off those tiny resistors when you accidentaly touch them..great times
Splendid work, thanks for sharing! Now I'll have trouble sleeping until I undo my Mayumi install, replace the DIP-8 for SOIC-8, use breakouts and less wire, but thank you very much! :)
Saw your newest dreamcast video and have been walking through your back catalog. I had an MM3 chip installed on my PSone and while it technically works this video has made me want to re do it as neat as this is. Then saw your pinned comment and after looking up what it is and why I will be using a Mayumi this time as well. Thanks and keep the videos coming!
5:58 Wow, routing that wire under the chip was neat. Unfortunately, I don't think that is possible on later board revisions - they have a much thinner chip here that also integrates the memory to the left on this board.
I may be wrong but it looks as though you've tinned the end of the wire on that first connection. This is something i've never seen and will be trying out
Is it just me or is the chip backwards to the adapter board? Hole 5 on this video looks like it should go to pin 1. It looks like the chip is upside down, not that it matters for instal, but hole 5=1 hole 6=2 hole 7=3 hole 8=4 and so on.
Also, in case anyone tries this, there is a wire on pin 13 that isn't specifically said or filmed. I know this isn't a "tutorial" but hopefully this info might help someone.
Is the solder splash near the writing [IC106] sony's fault or yours? I can't see it very well, maybe it's supposed to be like that? I used to mod ps in 1998, I started with a wood pyrograph, ah the good old times ;-) I remember charging 70$ for a mod, paying 1.50 dollar for a modchip. That was a really good ROI! nice job anyway!
when you have all that excess wire coming through the vias did you trim to length and then solder or did you solder as is, using the solder to burn away the cladding and then trim?
That's the wonderful thing about Kynar insulation. It's heat resistant, so when you apply heat to the jacketing, it's only going to remove material that comes into contact with your tip. What I like to do is just make a circular motion around the 1mm+/- material that potrudes from the via until the jacketing is stripped. I then solder and trim it up a bit. I couldn't figure out a good way to show that on camera because my damned hands were always in the way of the shot.
I am new to soldering and working with boards. I have put a region free chip in my ps1 slim. Do you have introduction videos because if I'm going to try I want it to be as close as possible to your end product.
Can you answer a few questions for someone who’s been soldering for a long time but simply sucks at it and can’t seem to problem solve it well? I have flux, different sized tips, temp adjustable iron(a cheap one). If I’m having problems getting my pins to stick to the chips pins like yours do what’s my problem? Flux is down. Wires are tinned. Is my iron too hot? Am I not heating the chips pin enough? Am I moving too much? Is my tip too big or too small? I attempted installing an mm3 on a psx and immediately lifted a pad. So now I have to go to the chips pin and I want to do what I can to right my previous wrong.
Goddamn, that is amazing. I wish your videos were around when I started my modding journey in 2013/14. You should charge a fee for your videos. Soldering teaching at its finest!
hello, ive removed the mod chip in my pal psone console. The psone now want start my original ps1 pal game. Its goes straight into the cd player menu! What can be the problem? Now i cant run backups and originals as well! :(
A lot of people will tell you to buy the smallest tip you can (for when doing this sort of work). I don't believe in that. The smaller the tip, the less thermal mass you have to deliver energy into the point of contact. Look at the tip that I use, for example. I use a large D type (flat blade) tip. If you're beginning to learn how to solder, the standard "conical" tip is more than sufficient for general purpose use. Everyone has different anatomy. Find what you're most comfortable with using and that you can articulate/maneuver well.
It's not about the tip, it's what you do with it. 😅 conical tips should seldom be used. Chisel and bevel tips, good flux and some practice is all you need. If you really want to get into micro soldering a bent conical tip might come in handy on occasion.

Mayumi over Multi-Mode, always..
Voultar why? What is the advantage of mayumi?
Voultar I need some help with this. Back in 2002 a buddy of mine who spent way too much time in Korea with the army brought an original PS1 home. It had a mod that plugged into the serial port on back and just stayed there it was about the size of a pack of cigarettes his PS1 played DVDs... what was that?
i would also like an answer to this as what ever that was sound interesting
Was probably a VCD player, they used MPEG1 and could be written to CDs. I burnt my share of VCDs before I could afford a DVD burner
It could be the fact that the Mayumi chip uses the PS1's own internal clock signal to drive the timing so it's more accurate as long as it's not getting any interference when the likelihood of that happening with the way he installs those chips is very minimal. Slipping of the wire under the IC legs at 5:55 was way too sexsual.

If there's a need to use glue, what about electrical tape?
You can use a small amount of super glue to anchor several wires together. You really shouldn't have to use electrical tape.
Such an inspiration.

Ew Multi-Mode 3. No sir! :D
It replaces the PS logo at boot with a crappy MS Paint pic that says "VOULTAR" with fire barrels and guitars scrawled all over the place.
Which chip do you recommend for PS1?
Where might one find a reliable place that carries these?

It would also be nice if you done a tutorial step by step which will help others learn from your skills to develop there own.
