4:15 I have an RTX 3080ti, and you can undervolt the card to have the same wattage as a GTX 1080ti. Went from 350+ wats to 250 easily just by undervolting, while maintaining the exact same framerates in video games and benchmarks.

    • @dawienel1142
      @dawienel1142 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Can confirm this on my side as well, I just needed to drop max vcore to around 700mv in the curve editor and performance dropped by around 3-5fps, power was around 260-280watts (compared to 330-360watts)
I used the new remastered Hellblade senua's sacrifice and horizon zero dawn to test this.
I generally mine with it for now and game on my Asus Scar G17 (RTX3070/5900HX) though.
My desktop is still stuck on a R1700 and a 1080p 75Hz screen so the laptop ended up much more efficient and giving me a even better experience
This will in time be my gaming setup after I get the 5800X3D and a 144+ good 3440x1440 34" screen.
At first I hated the rtx3080ti for its high power draw, but now I'm okay with it at 260-280watts for what amounts to the same performance.

I also miss that you could get flagship performance in a 2-slot cooler design. I get that TDPs have gone up, but it feels a bit excessive when 3060-class cards are getting 2.5 or 3 slot coolers.
Maybe it's the brute force nature of going bigger for more cooling vs more finesse and engineering to deliver a smaller cooler that still performs adequately.

The 1080 is a card that deserved a much longer run. It has performance comparable to a 3060 Ti and if they had just kept making it all this time people could have had $200 cards kicking ass.

Older cards aren't cheaper to make. At 1080 ti is pretty inefficient in terms of the process of making it. It would still cost more to produce a 1080 ti compared to a 3060 ti which uses a much smaller die, is more powerful, and power efficient.
Not to mention it wouldn't make business sense even if it did work that way. I do agree Nvidia is holdign back cards at this point. A 3060 itself should be better then a 1080 ti at this point not matching it.

Dawid, also remember that the older 1000 series cards are able to utilize AMD's FSR in games that have it (like Cyberpunk 2077). It can be quite helpful.
I have an older GTX 1070 in one of my backup machines, and just for the hell of it I ran Cyberpunk 2077 on it and played around with settings. Native 1440p was terrible, of course, but turning FSR on I was able to squeeze playabl;e rates out of it. I settled on 1440p Medium with FSR on Balanced and was able to get around 75 fps on it - very playable, and not terrible-looking. For a game like that on 1440p I think that's amazing.
I personally love the new upscaling technologies and what they can do for older cards like these. My main rig has a RX 6800 but it's fun just to play around with the older cards to see what you can squeeze out of it.

1:10 What is that music playing in the background? Reminds me of Beneath a Steel Sky, but Dawid looks not old enough to know that game. ^^

I got myself this exact model of 1080ti about a month before 30 series launched (up from a 1070 i gave to a friend as they were using a GT740). A solid card that likes to self boost to 2Ghz or so, plan to use it 'til it breaks basically as I don't need faster.
Crazy thing about the 1080ti is there's like 5 gpu die revisions (350-K1 through K4 and the last made was the 351-K1-A1), with the FTW3 the early ones had vbios switches names Master and slave (mine and yours are examples of that), later ones were named normal and OC.
Thanks for the awesome content Dawid, as always
