What are SIGHT WORDS and what is our routine for memorizing sight words?
If you GOOGLE 'sight words' you will find three terms in the result:
1) Sight words
2) High Frequency words
3) Dolch Words List
You would think why are they using three different terms to explain sight words. The reason is very simple and clear.
First of all Sight words are words that need to be memorized. Some sight words cannot be read phonetically, you cannot decode them. While others are simply HFW (High Frequency Words).
High frequency words: are those words that cover most part of the English text. By memorizing them, the child becomes a fluent reader. Most high frequency words fits the basic standard phonics rules. (like 'and', 'big' etc.) While some words in High Frequency words have some advance phonic rules. (Like in 'the', 'their', 'now' etc.) We don't have to explain the advance rules to children yet.
Dolch Words List: This is a list created by Dr. Edward William Dolch. He simply compiled the sight words and high frequency words for Kindergarten - Grade 3 that appeared most in children story books, course books etc.
You can do the following activities to help your child with learning sight words.
Activity1-Flash Cards: Make some flash cards.
Activity2- Use in Sentences: Pick one word from the flash cards and make an easy sentence with it.
Other words in the sentence should be words that the child can easily read with basic phonics rules that he has learnt.
Activity3-Matching Sheet: Another way of reinforcing the sight words is a matching sight words sheet
Activity4-Read/Build/Write: I made this sheet. First the child read the words then he builds it with letter puzzles or block letters.
Activity5-Throw the object: Place some sight word flash cards on the floor. Give child an object and say out loud one sight word and ask the child to throw the object on it.

A: I moved to Sweden after marriage. Lived there for 7 years, then moved back to Saudi Arabia in 2018.

A: I have done a four year honours program in Information Technology and Computing.
Q: Who’s in your family?
A: I have been married to Naveed for 7 years. We have two sons - Yahya is 3 and baby Ziyad is 1 year old.
Q: Why are you Homeschooling him?
A: In general, I am not satisfied with the quality of education in schools. But also, our local school's system (we have only one or two international schools in our city) is not satisfactory. We are aiming to homeschool till 6 years of age for now.
