Just a note: I have taught for over 20 years and I never taught kids to just memorize their Sight Words. I always taught them to look for the phonics patterns and notice the irregularities. Your strategies are very similar to the way we were taught many years ago - in a successful balanced literacy classroom. Unfortunately, over the years, school systems taught teachers to teach 'programs' instead of the research-proven workshops.

Exactly! I have over 25 years experience. In recent years, we have acquired over 5 different programs to teach phonics. We added another program this year! I never taught to memorize sight words.

Yes, I also I don't recommend memorizing, most of them do that because they don't letter names.

During a field placement a teacher taught sight words by drilling students everyday with flashcards. They couldn't remember most of them and she told me there was nothing else she could do to teach them. I thought that couldn't be true and I am so glad I found this video! It definitely boosted my confidence and made me excited to teach!

Love these activities. I like that these strategies can be taught whole group to introduce words, and once the kids are familiar with the activities they can easily be adapted to word work stations as a way to continue to review and practice words.

These are all such wonderful ways to engage students in learning about sight words! Thanks for sharing! I’m familiar with the Elkonin boxes, but I’ve never thought to use play dough with it to address the sensory component of it or to compare the different sight words. Thank you for once again sharing such valuable ideas and resources!!

Hi, I'm teaching English as a second language to students who don't speak English at all. So I definitely am going to try this. You were right, I was taught the 'old school' way and they did sight words to us just like you said: by memorizing. This video really makes sense because I feel like students would really get the word down by sounding out the letters in a word that's taught to them. So great thank you from Micronesia.

Love this strategy! Just be careful when teaching the "th" part in think, that you don't add the schwa sound at the end. "th" in think is unvoiced, so it should not have your voice in it :)

Thank you for this video. As a mom struggling with sight words the way hes being taught isn't helping him... strongly believe sound and blending helps or "plugging them together" the way you did here especially this past week he did much better since im teaching him the way i want not the way they want 🙏 thank you i now know im doing it right after watching this and have so many more ideas ❤😭

This is interesting that you show them the word first and then have them do the boxes. I have learned to have them hear the phonemes first and you record and show them those unusual spellings for the sounds as they occur. I'll continue to put the phonemic awareness before the written word is presented. Fortunately, even though I taught all through the period of time you mention with the sight word expectations, most teachers figured out that it wasn't just flash and say and had similar approaches to teaching these words. Teachers are always smarter than the current trend/approach because they observe the learners. I adore your fingerlights idea! I hadn't seen that before and hope to add that in with a tutoring student soon. I also LOVE your "What is wrong?" to aid in visual memory. I just found you and hope to follow along and pick up more tips for Title reading and tutoring beginning readers.

I'm not a teacher but I have a first grader who is having a little trouble memorizing sight words long term. He can know them backwards and forwards while we're working on them and using them, but forget some if there's a short period of time that they haven't been the focus. My son has ADHD as well so doing sight words using different activities keeps his attention as well. These are great tips not only for making sight words fun but also to not just use pure memory but to know how to segment the word. Which may be what they do at school but at home we're just told to go over them and have him write them three times. I'm so thankful I found your channel. We just started but I can already see he has a better understanding of what to do if he can't remember a word. He immediately starts to segment the word. Thank you so much!

@@lizwalker3148 We turn off all the lights and read a book with our flashlights or finger lights. I purchased finger lights from the Dollar store for my class when we were in person and gave them each one (I collect them after each class but have them sanitize first). I also bring in books for them to read from the library (during Covid) or my own collection (not during Covid). Before Covid they read with a partner; after independently. Virtually we still do it too but it is not as much fun as in person but students still enjoy it. I either have them read in front of the screen silently or put them into a Break Out Rooms with a partner. I also switch things up by starting with my own book which I read in the dark to them with my light. Students read silently or with a partner for about 10 minutes.
