  • Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time we take a look at what appears to be a campaign started by a fellow TH-camr Ross of Accursed Farms. With our very medium at risk of being delisted day by day it's time someone takes these publishers to task to properly preserves the games we buy. Thanks for watching!

The crew is 99% offline, there is a whole single player game.
The online stuff is only for the DLC part calls the summit.
So the base game is 100% offline and the DLC is the only online part.
Ubisoft could very easy make the game playable offline.
Ubisoft refuses to make a patch
      This should be illegal
This is why digital games are trash, the crew is no longer in the download history or in my library.

@@drkreuzer670 But pirating can be difficult, and a lot of games these days are online games, and if it's an online game, someone needs to host servers for pirated copies of it, which is a really hard thing to do. It should just be illegal for a game company to delist a game and erase people's ownership of it. That'd be like selling someone a car, coming back after 6 months and taking the car just leaving 4 wheels there on the ground. "We're erasing your ownership of this car." You can't do that. Why can a game company do that to games???

For Brazil is a bit easier since there we have really good consumers laws, companies there have a hard time trying to scam people, as an example, Apple and Samsung when they decided to stop providing charger bricks with their phones most consumers just had to open an online complain with the consumer protection board and they forced those companies to provide the bricks free of charge, no need to ask representatives, change any laws or go to court, you pay for the product you get what you paid for.
Now in Canada and US is really scary how they let companies do whatever they want, you have such basic consumers laws that the only way to protect yourself is going to court, but even that is expensive and time consuming… is pretty much a system that negates you to fight for your rights unless you have money and time to go through legal matters.

Was *really* hoping you'd mention City of Heroes during the video. It has an amazing story which goes to show how important games can be for people. The short short version for those that don't know, City of Heroes was an MMO owned by NCSoft that shut down, had the server code stolen, rebuilt by fans who ran private servers for years, the private servers were discovered (by other fans), the server code was released for all to install, then the largest private servers released publicly *with improvements and expansion of the original game* to wide praise, and eventually one of these private servers inked a deal with NCSoft to officially allow themselves to keep running. The latest numbers I've seen is they have 44,000 users on a server cluster paid for by donations.

So, fun fact... Ubisoft patched the PC edition of Splinter Cell Conviction to require their activation servers to validate if you own the DLCs instead of letting steam do the validation. They also patched it to require INTERNET ACCESS for LAN co-op. Clicking that menu will boot you back to the menu saying they couldn't access Ubi's servers. You can still buy the DLCs and everything on steam, but they will not work and people that have previously purchased the game also cannot access their DLCs or play the co-op campaign at all anymore because of their forced online patches, and guess what? Those online servers have been taken down and the forced online patches have not been reverted.
The same thing happened with Splinter Cell Blacklist, where you also cannot access their online servers to validate what you own, with Ghost Recon Future Soldier, where the game kicks you out of singleplayer because it cannot validate that you actually own the copy as their servers are dead, and the list goes on and on...
This is not exclusive to the crew, this is almost every old Ubisoft game, they keep doing this and they keep getting away with it somehow and they will keep doing it until we start suing them for taking what we bought away from us.
Edit: Woah this got seen. Also, I could be wrong but I think there's a paragraph in Steam's TOS that a vendor cannot do what Ubisoft is doing where they basically revoke access to content previously bought... Not that Ubi cares, clearly.
Also worth keeping in mind, most of these issues seem to happen to people that have activated keys post their uplay changes that seemingly happened before 2020, not everyone will have the same issues but if you visit these games' steam pages and look at the reviews (especially with the case of the DLCs) you will be able to see people complaining about how things are not working and how their keys simply do not register or are recognized by the system anymore.

"getting" - they started that bs of not owning anything 15 years ago and it got an industry standard as it worked flawlessly with everyone still buying their games so even smaller companies started doing it as well.
As much as I like that the controversy finally gets taken serious: it's insanity that it took a failed Ubisoft marketing stunt for their subscription model for people to notice it and take it serious in the first place. Worst part is that people somehow only shit on Ubisoft, despite EA already trying it almost 20 years ago with it working alright and Ubisoft only perfectionizing the formula at around the same time EA did as well.
If people wouldn't have been sitting there telling everyone "we don't care" for the first few years we wouldn't even be in this situation.

Wow I'm so happy to see this video title today because I literally just went through two weeks of the most intense stress I've ever been through because of ubisoft so-called support, I've never had a problem with ubisoft untill I contacted ubisoft support to fix an error in my account and where for example Rockstar social club support helped me with exactly the same problem within minutes of me sending a support ticket ubisoft just ignored me and now weeks later I still haven't got a reply so I googled ubisoft support reviews and couldn't believe what I was seeing as 18000 reviews scored Ubisoft support ONE STAR! honestly the most extreme review bombing I have ever seen, I have Tourette's syndrome and a multitude of other mental health problems and severe anxiety and rage and after what ubisoft have put me through I now physically hate them. (also this is the second time I have had to type all this because after I spent literally an hour typing all this earlier I refreshed youtube and my comment had gone so apparently youtube doesnt care about people with serious mental health problems or how much anguish they cause me by deleting my hard work that I was feeling really good about and was finally feeling better having shared all this and that felt like youtube just punched me in the stomach and I finally feel up to re typing this now so THIS attempt had better not be deleted cos I don't think I could handle that), anyway, I have never had so much hatred for a company as I now have for ubisoft so seeing one of my favourite youtubers talking about ubisoft like this today has made me feel so much better. thank you Mutahar. Sadly, by "buying" and playing the game you agreed to the EULA, which outright states that you don't own the game, just a license to play it that can be revoked at any time. This has always been the case, yes even with physical media, only difference is that you have a physical key (the cartridge or disk). It's the standard for movies and music too. All we as the consumer own are licenses, not copies of the game. If we did own the game when we bought it, that would cause a lot more problems, such who gets the profits? Would it now be split between everyone who owns the game? With a license that issue is gone, and the game itself is the property of the studio who made it, aka our current system. Not defending the practice, but more people need to learn that we, unfortunately, have never owned the games we buy and agreed to it by purchasing the game.

      Physical doesn't help.
You gotta pay attention to the contracts, loads of companies don't sell you the game as a product but a license to access it until revoked, so you essentially rent it for an unspecified amount of time. So even if it has offline mode, the disc doesn't help you on PC either way as you gotta activate them, and on console they can just either render them unplayable with a patch or get the App ID blocked off so you can't start it anymore. And I highly doubt that anyone is buying a modern console to keep it offline and play unpatched day 1 versions of games that sometimes are unplayable.

    • @1God1Fury
      @1God1Fury หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@@Unknown_Genius That is not true for older consoles where there is no such thing as console system update and patches. Or PC physical copy of a game that doesn't require (or build specifically to not have) any platform to install and play.
But even for modern devices and games as long disk contain the necessary data and files (which is the main point of having physical copy) in order to install and play, there might be a way to bypass blockers and activations requirements if they are there.

@@darklex5150 that's the whole point of selling games DRM free - it's designed for you to own.
there's obvious exceptions like the optional Steam DRM which is only a disc check and can be bypassed easily and which is going to get removed if steam was ever to go down (to prevent file moving to refund it instantly and keep the game mainly, some devs don't use it regardless) but DRM itself ain't even the core issue.
On console e.g. Assassins Creed doesn't utilize any traditional DRM like on PC, they however got full control of being able to get the associated App ID blocked off if they no longer want you to play it - you can still play it if they did block it off, however only unpatched and after doing a factory reset.
Same as The Crew doesn't use any DRM, its an always on title, which automatically makes it a liability of loosing it.
+ I disagree on the GOG statement - GOG is great (or was great) until I bought a game that literally doesn't function but only on the GOG version, other DRM free versions as well as the Steam version however work flawless - with GOG constantly claiming that it'd be working for them while pretty much every review states that the game doesn't work. Only way to getting it to work is with their Galaxy launcher, and even then it's a broken mess while you can't even rely on Galaxy working properly. So it's a company that I definitely do not trust at all anymore. I rather have the Steam wrapper on a otherwise DRM free version and manually remove it if necessary instead of non-functional products that I can't get my money back on if they don't work.

People had the too-early released Stellar Blade demo literally removed from their account. The repercussions and implications of this are terrifying. It means they can practically revoke any license you have *on the fly* as long as you're connected to the internet. They could technically also implement features so you're *required* to have an active internet connection even for disc-based games; they could also remove the offline/primary console features. You play due to their good will, which could change for any reason and at any moment. While the actual occurance is practically highly unlikely, the feeling that this is possible and has been applied already in a few rare instances is alarming.
This can't occur when you play on older original hardware or via emulator.

As long as an argument can be made that a company sold you a right to play the game and then revoked your ability to play that game for no justifiable reason, you can sue them for unethical practices, regardless of how many pages their terms of service are.
Doesn’t apply to mmos of course, but all single player games do fit in this category.

Mario Maker 1 is on the brink of death because of the consequences of Nintendo removing the internet functionality of the entirety of the Wii U. This in terms makes the game 99% unplayable except for the up to 120 levels you managed to save before they take down the internet. This change is occurring on April 8th. So basically all 10.6 million levels created in the game will not be preserved, and there will not be a way to access the hard work and level designs many creators spent their time and love on. The game basically becomes a glorified paperweight in just a few days. This also means that someday in the distant future, Mario Maker 2 will suffer the same fate on the Nintendo Switch. We are talking about a game that was a top ten best seller for the entire platform here, that still has quite a few active players to this day. A game that isn't even a decade old. A full priced game at the time as well. There needs to be a better system in place to preserve these titles as they are a part of video game history. And don't even get me started with what they did to Super Mario Bros 35 or Pac-Man 99. While the latter has some singleplayer functionality, the former doesn't even ALLOW us to play the SINGLE-PLAYER practice mode. For whatever reason, you are required to be online for that, so we can't even enjoy the nostalgia of the SMB35 unique game specific physics. And of course both games are inaccessible in the eshop.

A few nights ago I was attempting to get as many “the crew” trophies as I could. I had to complete two story missions with a platinum medal to get the trophy. All of a sudden I was kicked and I couldn’t join back in. That was that. The end. I have to live with an in-completed trophy and a game I can’t play anymore forever. So sad. I hope a law passes that they HAVE to provide an offline patch.

If you ever jailbreak your PS4 you may be able to give yourself these trophies, you have to jump through so many hoops to achieve this though.

Whenever we talk about preserving video games i always remember "Evolve" even if it was a massive flop, i had a absolute blast with my pals playing it. It could be played off line and you could host it if i'm not terrebly mistaken. Now it's gone forever So sad

I love the guessing game of how unhinged Muta will be. His primary objection to kidnapping someone off the street being "that would be against TOS" was a good barometer.

I watched the video of Accursed Farms yesterday. I think Muda giving a shoutout to him is really amazing because we DO need companies to stop this practice of deleting video games should be illegal. If they remove games or make them unplayable they should give 100% refund.

Ah split-screen. I remember in college when we tried to do a MW2 system link party. No problem doing a four-person split screen match, but link those 360s together and suddenly it's "one man per console".

This has been happening over and over in the background for years and no one talks about it. Game called "H1z1 Just Survive", you bought the game, developers shut down the servers, you can no longer access it in any way shape of form. It wasnt even an old game or a dead game they just decided to go all in on their battle royale game because the genre was trending at the time. No refunds from the dev company or steam were issued. Its literally theft. You cant sell someone a car and then remotely deactivate it (yet) that is essentially what this is.

If restaurants did this with food - where they want it back after we already paid full price and consumed it - we'd be ALL OVER that. We absolutely need to hold publishers to the same standard.
If they take away the game, then I want my money back.

      That's an absolutely dumb comparison.
      1) You literally don't sign a contract if you buy food at a restaurant.
      2) That's precisely what loads of companies did for the past 15 years, have you sign a contract (and gave you links to them beforehand) that you don't buy a game but a license that can be revoked at any time with the product not being sold to you.
Not to mention that people have been warning about it ever since it started - no one cared tho and still wanted to play e.g. Far Cry 3 or Battlefield 3.
