Ive been wishing for a while now that a movement would grow to push for data sovereignty. Personal data should be viewed as property that when collected without specific and expressed consent is considered theft. Not only do companies and brokers profit from its collection, they also expose us all to innumerable risks. The flip side of this, though, is that enforcement would require digital identity and a forced participation; (social credit anyone?) ruining the anonymity potential for an individual online. Sometimes the best strategy is to disengage. Perhaps that is the only “secure” option anymore.

When Facebook spies on us US government: When TikTok spies on us US government: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YOU CANNT DO THAT THATS ILLEGAL RRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Because facebooks files can get peeled over by the u.s. government anytime incase they need something and they are a usa based company while tiktok is spying information for an opposing world force to the usa(ccp) and is based in china. Both are bad tho.
That's because USGov cooperates with Facebook and other homegrown social medias to monitor the population and try to control social change in favor of the government. TikTok is used by the CCP for similar things in the west, except the data points are used to encourage content that promotes topics which push to destabilize social cohesion in the West.
If one of the two are going to spy on me then it becomes the lesser of the two evils. Who would you rather have spying on you? Your own government or a foreign hostile government that is definitely using the data to compromise your countries national security.
It's completely unjustifiable either way. And I'm glad tiktok got banned because they were leaking even more data than Facebook straight to a totalitarian communist government. Hey since you are doing that, here are some details about Facebook's research vpn. I participated in the Facebook research project when it started in February 2018 and ended March 2019. I found out about it from Centercode, a website which companies partner with to run beta tests. Anyway, the Facebook research survey was actually called "the Kodiak project" and was later renamed to "Atlas". When I joined, someone named "Mike Fine" emailed me and instructed me how to make an account and download, install, and set up the app on my android phone. You download the app on your phone (I used android), and it runs a VPN. If you keep the VPN on the entire month, they compensate you $20 as an Amazon giftcard. If you turn off the vpn for more than a day, they email to alert you the vpn was off. At the time, I of course knew Facebook is a shady company so I actually used the vpn on an old phone I used exclusively for watching TH-cam and doing random bullshit. The data I gave to them is probably useless. I got around $200 worth of giftcards as a result of my longtime participation. Every month you get an email thanking you for participating followed by the gift card code. If you DM me, I can provide screenshots of the emails. Btw, teens were compensated half so while I got $20/month, teens would get $10/month. Teens had to sign up with an adult and each account could only have two teens, so a total of $40/month was possible.
Also for the record, I have never had a Facebook account so besides being called "Facebook research project", nothing was directly linked to Facebook from the participants perspective.

Any Government funded public square is a threat to both Wallet & Free Speech everywhere.
@DudeSoWin the government (or at least the US federal government) has laws that are meant to protect free speech. Private companies are not restricted by those laws. A (US) government funded public square would at minimum have those protections legally baked in.
Now, that doesn't mean they would necessarily be followed, just that the law would 100% be there.

U.S. and UK Enter Into Landmark Data Access Agreement - Kennedy Sutherland LLP (kslawllp.com)
On October 3, 2022, the Department of Justice (“DOJ”) announced that the Access to Electronic Data for the Purpose of Countering Serious Crime (“Data Access Agreement” or “Agreement”) between the United States of America (U.S.) and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) is now in effect.
Under this landmark Agreement, service providers in the U.S. and the UK will be permitted to respond to a “qualifying, lawful” overseas production order (“OPO”) to transfer electronic data created or maintained by the provider. According to the DOJ, the Agreement will allow the U.S. and UK to “prevent, detect, investigate, and prosecute serious crime, including terrorism, transnational organized crime, and child exploitation, among others.”
Do people actually buy the stuff that gets marketed to them? Never once have I seen an ad pop up on a YT vid that made me want to go "yeah, I'll buy that." In fact most of the advertising I am exposed to makes me NEVER want to buy products from that company again for wasting my time shoving an ad I don't care about in my face. That being said, why are these companies so brainwashed into thinking that their advertising works? Does it REALLY actually sell their shit? I'm not convinced it does.
It does. People buy stuff they see on ads all the time. Usually the make or break for someone is the first couple seconds of the ad hooking you or not, and also offering a skip button. Unskipables typically get ignored.

They eventually did get it reinstated but I imagine Apple watches everything they sign like a hawk now.

I can’t tell you how many times I have a phone conversation, and then Facebook starts recommending pages about incredibly specific things I just talked about
Ive been wishing for a while now that a movement would grow to push for data sovereignty.

When TikTok spies on us
US government: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YOU CANNT DO THAT THATS ILLEGAL RRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
