‘Airmageddon’ Causes Mass Lost Luggage at Airports

  • As staffing shortages continue at major airlines, more problems arise amid the travel nightmare. Named airmageddon, tens of thousands of pieces of luggage from all over the world are stranded at different airports. Grant Whitson waited three weeks for his baggage to return to his Bakersfield, California, home. A California couple was also caught up in airmageddon. One of their bags traveled to six destinations before they received it.

As a wheelchair user, chaos like this goes from being a major annoyance to a terrifying nightmare. I've heard airlines lose something like 10 wheelchairs per day. I cannot imagine getting to my destination and having no way to move around.

@@tyranitarmemer6284 My grandma uses a wheelchair. I don’t know if this is how everyone does it cause everyone has different needs. But usually the airport has their own wheelchair that they’ll transfer her to. Then an assistant helps her to her seat in the plane or around the airport.

    • @Zippy15

@@tyranitarmemer6284 Thanks for asking 👍 It's a total disaster to be honest... In most cases you need to transfer to an aisle chair which is then pushed by an attendant who helps you transfer to your seat. Which means if you need to get up for any reason, you'll need an attendant to move you around the cabin. All of this is even for complicated for people with severe mobility limitations like full body paralysis, who need a great deal of support while sitting up or transferring. There was a recent story that came out about a woman who was left on the plane for 90 minutes after everyone had left because the attendant 'forgot' to go get her.
Hoping that soon there will be better accomodations on planes because there is still a VERY long way to go.

    Hey hey! Airlines worker here!
Here's some tips to avoid things like this:
    1. If you have a duffle bag or bags with multiple straps, place your tags on ONE strap only, do not try and close it on both straps. If you do that, it has a chance of breaking the clasps while in the baggage room. All that information they need won't be on your bag. Please place on ONE STRAP ONLY!!
    2. If you have a box or a bin, ask for some tape to tape down the bag tag for extra protection!
    3. If you're extremely worried, pack light and get a small carry on! There for you won't have to check it in.
    4. If the airlines offers a selfmade tag (the ones you put your name, phone number, and address on) USE IT!!! Don't be afraid to ask for a pen or extra time to fill it out!
Pls like this so people can see, happy travels! Will add more if you need it! Ask questions if need be.

Our bag has been missing since July 1st, too. Still no contact with the airline baggage handlers, no emails have been answered, no telephone calls, no updates on the PIR-report, nothing. 🤬 This is ridiculous. Why aren't they looking at the tags that tell them where to be sent, then just send them to the right country? 🤷‍♀️ I saw a video of one airline that took a whole plane and filled it with baggage to the right country, and let them sort it out. That's how it should be done. My next investment: AirTags for the suitcases. 🏆

I remember when I went to Sweden in 2019 Iceland air lost my luggage and I didn’t have luggage for two weeks. I think they reimbursed me like $100 or so just so that I could buy some essentials while they were looking for my luggage. I had essentially buy a whole new wardrobe while waiting for my other wardrobe to come through which I was very scared because I had over $3000 worth of clothing and materials for school and I did have travelers insurance at that time but I didn’t know how much that travelers insurance would’ve covered for all of that extra. It’s really scary when you don’t know where your luggage is in pretty much our whole life is in that luggage.

Airlines have been careless with baggage for years! If an airline could guarantee your bag would be safe, undamaged and at the appointed place people wouldn't try to cram the overhead bins with luggage that should be it their fingertips when they walk off the plane. Any airline that can do that would create a loyal clientele.
