HELLO FRIENDS!! hope you guys enjoy our investigation into the Unclaimed Baggage store! what did you guys think of our Lost Looks (tm)? what's one treasure we should have picked up? make sure you check out our collab on HopeScope's channel after this one!! :) th-cam.com/video/v5aHcu19wio/w-d-xo.html - xoxo, saf
this vid is so exciting to see! i work in ubc’s ~secret warehouse~ and have been waiting for a vid like this for years i’m so glad you enjoyed it at the store!!!!!
IMPORTANT TIP: when packing your luggage the last thing to do is right on top (so first thing u see when opening ) put a paper with ur flight info as well as contact info. Normally that’s the first place the luggage office checks if a tag is missing or something. This can prevent your luggage from ending up here. Happy travel and sending Much love, a former Airline employee
I always do this! My bags go with colourful straps and handle hangers with my surname all over those things and a note to check the top front pocket, where I will always write out the original flight(s) as booked and contact information for both ends of the journey. Even if I get bumped to another flight and take a different path than my bag, they'll have the intended destination, who to contact, and who can accept it for me if it ends up on the opposite side of travel than I did.
I'll never forget when I lost my luggage in Scotland. The sweetest old man who worked at the airport drove my bag from Glasgow to Edinburgh and I had no idea until he knocked on my door. But I lost a piece of luggage in the US and it was horrible trying to get it back.
The United States is THE WORST! I remember flying WITH American Airlines from Florida to New York for a week-long, for a wedding. Was on the phone for days!!! They stated they would "mail my luggage if they found it." They lost my luggage in Atlanta where we stopped but the Airline swore they had no clue. I had to purchase brand new clothes, and shoes (an entirely new wedding outfit that took me months to find) before, and I was rushed. When I say I lost EVERYTHING and would have been SOL had I not owned a credit card to charge all these purchases. My fiance and I decided to drive back instead of fly because the experience was horrible and made a surprise stop at ATL airport where I demanded to go to LOST & FOUND. Long & behold, there stood my luggage that had been scrimmaged through and had several expensive items missing. Including my Jimmy Choo wedding shoes. Coincidence? I THINK NOT!! American Airlines only reimbursed me for like $1k worth of my purchases and it was a lengthy process that required purchase receipts etc. The shoes that were stolen from my luggage were $3k alone. I don't usually purchase allot of shoes nor expensive shoes at that, I save and then buy something I really like and it was devastating for me because they were brand new that I purchased for the wedding with an Oscar De La Renta dress that was also taken, smh.
I went to Unclaimed Baggage in late May. I was chosen to open one of the bags, and I got the same items that Safiya opened first. Down to the two fake Gucci and Versace shirts and funky slides. AND the yacht mop bag with chargers. These bags are completely staged
its such a strange ethical position for a place to resell other people's missing (stolen?) luggage but destroy counterfeit branded goods to prevent people selling them.
And not return property eg the Henson family’s when they know who is the rightful owner. Like wow owner lady so proud of you for smashing up counterfeit watches, what a good moral compass 🙄
Also the huge quantity of crap is depressing. There's so much useless, non valued, poor quality stuff that ends up in landfills. Love how they don't talk about throwing anything away, they just donate or recycle it- cus you can recycle a used toothbrush. Riiiight.
I’m still waiting for Lufthansa to reimburse me. Why is that normal that after locating a luggage, they don’t contact the rightful owner?? Who decides, they can just go ahead, and sell my things?? Especially items you can’t put a price on!! My dog first teeth made in to a medallion, hardly any cash value, but she’s gone , that’s all I had left of her. This is disgusting, this makes my stomach sick. There should be a law against that! I didn’t lost my luggage!! LUFTHANSA LOST MY LUGGAGE! Edited on 06/27 2024 They sent me $274 as a reimbursement! That must be a joke, I’m not going to take that offer , they pay more for delayed luggages! It does not cover the value of my items they lost. Not to mention replacing my iPad , I know I shouldn’t have it in my luggage, but it wasn’t the first time I traveled with my iPad in my suitcase. That amount doesn’t cover the vet bill that I had to take my dog, because all he’s epilepsy meds was also in there. Honestly this is outrageous. I might have to contact an attorney…
As someone who's on their 15th day of not having received my bag, this is terrifying. Also I didn't lose my bag, THE AIRLINE did. And i dont give a shit that they reimburse me if it's gone for good, there are very personal and sentimental items in my suitcase that cannot be replaced. EDIT: I GOT MY BACK BAG!!! 5 days before I had to turn around and go back to Amsterdam and about 5 1/2 weeks after I'd arrived in San Diego, they finally delivered it to my door. I was SHOCKED but mainly just really happy!
I say keep an eye out on the sites these companies run if you lost it in America cause it could get put up on there! I really hope you get your bag back
As someone who has airline traveled for a couple marching band trips over the years, those “unclaimed” instruments make me so sad and angry. The most of the owners of those instruments probably were traveling to or from some sort of concert or performance so I cannot even imagine how heartbroken they were to “loose” something so valuable to them.
I'd be so pissed if any of my instruments got "lost" by an airline... Just another thing to worry about if I fly with one of mine... An expensive piece of equipment gone...
Just wanted to say I am really appreciating the discussion in the comments about the major ethical issues with this store. Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts and experiences!
And you forgot the ethics of selling fake goods as lost originals - since the store has no accountability for authenticity , nor will a buyer every get in touch with the real owner ( if there was ever one) . The deeper you look the more red flags it raises.
I didn’t see anything wrong with it I just saw it as a thrift store but I looked into the comments and realized they are selling stuff so high it’s not beneficial they are stealing items and selling them fir higher profit then they are worth they all should be donated!
"lost" is used very freely here. people DO NOT deliberately "loose" their luggage to this extent. Everyone knows how it is dealing with airlines with lost (by the airline) luggage. This shop feel super shady.
Tip for getting your lost bag back? Tell the airline there’s medication in it and request an “escalation.” At least in the EU, escalated searches mean they will literally track your bag with security cameras through the baggage chain in the airport. Worked for me 👍🏽
Thank you, that’s nice to know. Although I haven’t flown in 10 years or so, I do take about 10 medications daily 😂 Although now I got nervous even having medication in a checked in bag. That would be quite the bad trip to lose it…
thanks for the tip. it is so unethical for the airline to 'lose' the bag and then turn around and make a profit on it!! everyone has to enter credit card info to buy a plane ticket. it would be so easy for them to just send the bag to the address of the credit card. if it isn't their home, it's likely a home of someone the person knows. i'm guessing telling them you have medication you need probably makes it a priority because they don't want to be sued if you have health issues.
Or tell them something is dangerous like radioactive, or smuggling drugs. Bet they will track that down real quick. 😂 (please don't do that, just in case some idiot takes me seriously )
The only reason I can think that they wouldnt give you real suitcases and wouldnt let you in the back is that the suitcases likely often come with obvious information that would have led to someone being reunited with their lost things. What a shady store.
I mean, from a business standpoint that seems 100% logical. The store most likely bought the stuff from the airlines, they don't want to lose money by risking someone recognizing the stuff and coming to claim it (and the person would probably want to claim it for free). Also the allure of these kinds of stores is they may contain things that other people might want. If the original owners show up to claim their things, it becomes likelier for the remaining things in the store to be worthless. My point is, it's just a business trying to make money, there's nothing shady about that.
Just a business trying to profit off goods that were essentially stolen from other people, yeah nothing shady about that, wouldn't want anyone coming to reclaim their own personal items for FREE how messed up would that be???
@@tesscrelli783 u don't find ANYTHING shady about a woman purchasing stolen luggage and then pricing the used items 2x the actual price? No one forced then to open this shady ass establishment. They get no sympathy from me. It's morally fucjed up and shady af
I just wanted to say: with people being skeptical of the business model of this place, that that's not directed towards Safiya. I think she did a great job at showing what this place is and was honest in her concerns too. The video was super interesting and I think it's great that she went there as it's such a unique concept
Oh I never blame Saf or Tyler or anything if they look into things like this and they aren't as wholesome as they seem at first. Both of them are simply making an entertaining video and when they reach out to a place to film and showcase it, the company/organization is going to put their best foot forward. Only time I'd be upset at Saf or Tyler is if they were promoting something that was actually a full on scam or had extremely shady practices/support. Like if a place was a known discriminatory company, or dangerous organization (like PETA for instance) Her videos aren't exposé's and I don't expect them to be.
I just want to add my thoughts and about why they don't allow guests in the warehouse. I used to be a warehouse supervisor for a salvation army and though they are not the same I can guarantee it's probably similar. The warehouse could possibly be extremely over stocked and that could be a safety hazard for people who are not an employee because it's possible they could get injured somehow tripping or something falling on them and the store might not have insurance to cover non employees. It could also probably be a freaking mess back there and possibly embarrassing for the company to show how much stock and possible disorganization happens. Possibly there's a chance that the guest may see something back there and want to purchase it without it being processed to go on the sales floor and that can cause some awkward interaction. There is also employees that are working back there and having guests and camera crew can cause disruptions and they might not be able to do the job at hand because the disruptions of a social media person in cameras can be distracting those are just some thoughts and why I think they don't want people back in the warehouse could be totally wrong or maybe that's somewhat true but we we don't like people going in the warehouse when I used to work at salvation army because there was a huge chance that hurt that was my main concern
@@valgal5863well that could be it but if you look in the comments it shows how shady the buisness really is. They even lied saying the suit case was brand new for safiya to go through but it was stadged and someone had the exact same thing happen to them when they went there.
I think Saf was right about the bags they gave her to unbag being staged. There's no way someone would put Gucci sunglasses at the front of a soft shell checked bag....
Completely agree! My favorite sunglasses are my Gucci ones and there is no way that I would even put them in a checked bag. And definitely not the front pocket of a checked bag!
I think its a security risk (drugs or contraband ) if they work with feds I doubt they would give her a unvetted bag and they probably did "add" some things to make it more interesting for a video obviously.
1. unless somone put glasses there for "a minute" to have hands free and then forgot about them 2. Those bags probably was checked for illegal things, but probably also for some contact info to owners... I am assuming that food that could go bad was also throw out
I wouldn’t mind this if I knew airlines did their due diligence to return luggage, but they definitely don’t. Also donating primarily trash items and not items that charities actually need is a scummy move, especially since companies usually do this just so they don’t have to pay to dispose of the items themselves and get a tidy little tax write off.
Everybody’s gotta make their money! The store and all it’s employees run off of this process. They’re not required to donate anything at all. It’s nice that they do.
@@morgangonnelly5683 no, it’s not nice. I understand why you think that way and I think your hearts in the right place, but when the companies don’t pay to dispose of trash items and donate them instead then the charity has to pay to dispose of them out of their pocket which wastes donator money and limits the good they can actually do. If they’re not going to donate items that are actually being requested they should pay to dispose of them themselves. They’re only donating what they can’t sell which are often, as someone who has sorted through “donations” from stores like this, things that charities can’t actually give away. Even the items companies recycle, they get a kickback for that. All of these actions are to maximize profit. Beyond that, this store is not struggling to make a profit. It’s a tourist attraction that profits off the misfortune of others by selling used items for much more than they should be reasonably priced for. They could afford to donate a portion of the goods that are in sellable condition and actually do some good. Or better yet, donate a portion of profits. What they’re doing is good for their bottom line and good for their pr, but it’s not actually good for charities or the needy. Everyone has to make their money, yes, but if they’re profitable than they are making their money and the only reason they aren’t doing more for their community is greed.
@@LostApotheosis thank you for clarifying! I'm fed up with people running around and praising companies for donating trash because "at least they donate something!!"
Yep, they pretty much confirmed it when Safiya mentioned that Hope purposefully left her luggage on a flight to see if it's legit and it ended up in the store a few weeks later. A few weeks is not 90 days.
A woman from Toronto who recently returned home with Air Canada didn't have her luggage for 4 months... they said it was lost, but she had an Air Tag in it and was tracking it... turns out Air Canada had "donated" her lost luggage!
FYI: Henson was traveling with Hoggle from the UK when he got “lost”. Evidently they refuse to give him back to the Henson family. It’s pretty gross honestly. These are someone’s items purposely lost and then sold. The incompetency.
i completely forgot where hoggle ended up and it surprised me when I saw it I wish someone would just break in and return it to the family these scummy people should have this piece of art and film history
At the point compensation was paid for the loss they would no longer have any claim to ownership if it was found later, they’ve effectively sold the claim to ownership in exchange for the compensation. Very shitty and highly suspicious in the case of Hoggle but most people faced with the reality of trying to find *their* needle in a stack of lost needles are going to take the compensation instead of the gamble that their belongings eventually resurface
@@ConorNoakes i get what you’re saying, but it’s still absolutely unethical (even if it’s legal) and disgusting that they can basically *force* someone into selling their personal belongings after “90 days”
I definitely think that the reason why they didn't let you film in the warehouse is because there's most likely obvious contact information on the suitcases and didn't want their shady business to be uncovered. Not sure I can say that I'm a fan of this store...I find it really sad because 90% of the time, it's airlines that lose people's luggage and actively choose not to contact the owners regardless if there is contact information on the suitcases or not. The wedding dress and rings broke my heart.
Yup. Once profit becomes involved, ethics tend to go out of the window. My friend "lost" her suitcase on the way back from her destination wedding. The suitcase held her wedding dress and several expensive gifts. Her other checked suitcase was fine, and only had basic clothing and hygiene supplies. She stood in baggage claim for over thirty minutes waiting for her suitcase and had to get an airport employee to help her. She went through the whole rigmarole of declaring her luggage as lost and waited another forty minutes _just_ in case. Her husband had to push her to leave, in tears, and called corporate for her. They were never contacted. They called the airport, called lost luggage, called corporate, called anyone and everyone they could think of, but that suitcase remained "lost". There's almost no doubt it was lost on purpose and resold.
@@Mothman_In_a_T-Pose omg I'm so sorry she had to go through that. It's genuinely so crappy that airlines do this, it's legit just daylight robbery. Like literally robbery.
@@Mothman_In_a_T-Pose Probably not. It's incredibly rare for luggage to be actually lost. Most of the time if luggage isn't found right away (or had been left off for weight and balance reasons) it's because it was stuck somewhere in the workings of the belt system or fell off a cart and was put somewhere by ramp to deal with later and forgotten. With the exception of a few countries baggage theft is basically not heard of, especially by airlines.
At first when you said that the store donates a percentage of the goods I was like "oh, they're so sweet", then I realized they give to charity the trash they will have to pay to get rid of.
Same, I was hoping it was one of the rare situations where they worked more closely with the charities and picked out specific things that matched lists of items the charities most needed but my cynical mind didn't really have much hope for that
Agreed! I’m glad she actually brought to attention these practices. My coworker’s luggage has been in UK for the last month! They have not returned it yet (we are in U.S.) despite the constant communication! She has an AirTag and checks the location regularly…I wonder if this will happen and it will end up at a shady store like this.
This video makes me want to volunteer at the airport to be a "customer baggage advocate" whose only job is to do a bunch of detective work to reunite people with their lost luggage.
You wouldn’t even need to do any detective work! luggage tags have the travellers full name and would link to addresses, numbers ect :,( I recently left my hand luggage on the plane and they never contacted me!! The airport had no phone number or email so I had to go back in person to find it :/
I'm just now watching the video and that's something that caught my attention. Regardless of the ethical stance, this is basically a thrift store, but their prices seem outrageous. $60 for second-hand jeans or $30 for a tube top??? none of the prices make sense, considering they are just stealing things from people's lost suitcases.
think saf said they literally sell the luggage to this store, so they didn't pay nothing for the clothes (not justifying the prices, they're definitely ridiculous, but just eanted to point that out😅)
Yes they said they have contracts with all major airlines. They definitely staged the bags. And items show up there only weeks later? That's the airlines not trying to help the customers get their stuff back 😢
I think most of the time, *you* didn't lose the luggage, *the airline* did. Some airlines are notorious for losing people's luggage especially when there are layovers. To the point where it's best to just bring hand luggage when there's a layover.
I agree! Some many stories about airlines on TikTok are horrible. I'd ONLY have in my suitcase, clothes and toiletries. Everything else would be in my carry-on
i've found a good way to deal with this is to actually ask at the gate as soon as it opens for the next layover for them to check for your checked in bags. started doing it when my dad told me to (he travels a lot for work) and i've never had an issue with baggage. more impressively, he hasn't either pretty much ever and he basically travelled internationally once or twice a month every year for about 20 years
Saf: "what is this item??" Chasity immediately without inspection "it's a piggy bank!....oh wait what is it is it a piggy bank?" Saf you're right these bags were sooooo staged 🤣
First, I love Safiya so the negativity isn't about her. But this whole process feels so scummy. I don't believe for a SECOND that this many big-ticket items just get abandoned by airline users. The airlines have a side-hustle going on and it's at the expense of travelers. Also, that Hoggle puppet made me FURIOUS. There's NO WAY that they tried contacting someone in the Jim Henson Company because I can't see such a beloved piece of Henson history being intentionally left in some Alabama thrift store. Even if it's a replica, someone spent a lot of time and money on it and they deserve to get their collector's item back.
My uncle works in the baggage department of a huge airline. The sheer amount of "lost" luggage that is stolen rather than lost would shock most people. Airlines intentionally lose or hide luggage and do not wait 90 days at all.
Let's normalize specifying that the *AIRLINE* LOST your luggage. You didn't lose your luggage. Don't let large companies weasel out of responsibility and then profit from their own incompetence
Thank you!!!?! Language is important! Most of the time these bags aren't being abandoned by people, the airlines are losing their stuff and many never even make an effort to give them back.
Wow, so right, I didn’t even notice that subtle language change they’re making. And then the part where they’re talking about some people maybe not wanting the stuff anymore anyway - we’re sure doing a lot of work to soften the reality that these people entrusted the airline with they’re belongings and then the airline “lost” their bags and sold them for a profit. I get they have to do something with unclaimed luggage but we should live in the reality that they airline took this stuff, it’s not mostly stuff people didn’t want or were careless with. I don’t know what to do with that but it would make the experience seem rather less fun to me.
Hey! Did you know God is three in one!? The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit! Bless him! Jesus died for our sins, rose from the dead, and gives salvation to everyone who has faith in him! True faith in Jesus will have you bear good fruit and *drastically* change for the better! Have a blessed day, everyone! ❤
Your worries (yes, anxiety), depression, suicidal thoughts, EVERYTHING will melt away and be NO MORE when you lean on God and put your trust in him! When I have physical pain, I literally pray and the Lord quells it, that I am healed! Know that there is power in the name Jesus Christ! His name casts out demons and heals! People are bothered by his name. The world hates the truth and wants to continue living sinfully! God's children are set apart (holy) and righteous.
That violin they showed really hurt me 😭 as a musician I know how important instruments are to people and that was probably one of their most prized possessions. I’d highly doubt they just never tried to get it back-string instruments used by serious players are thousands of dollars. I recently was thinking about flying with my cello but decided not to because airlines are so irresponsible with instruments and there are a lot of horror stories of them being destroyed. I can’t imagine losing my cello and then it being sold to a random person to profit the airline that would hurt so bad
Oh, you don't need to worry about the airline loosing your cello because it has to travel in the cabin and you need to buy a seat for it. It's cheaper to just rent one at your destination. I'm also surprised that a person checked their violin because those are approved carry on items and should be kept in the cabin. Unless they were flying with Spirit, maybe?
Do you remember the song "United Breaks Guitars"? Guy caused a whole scandal with that story. Made me so sad too. I'd never want to check an instrument after hearing it.
I'm not so sure about that. I'm a professional violinist, and I don't know anyone who would check their violin. Everyone brings it on as a carry-on if it has any value, either personal or monetary. Any violin left behind in checked baggage is probably either worthless or stolen and dumped by the thief.
@@adorabell4253 I’ve heard a lot of stories about airlines throwing a fuss about someone buying a seat for their cello or trying to move them and stuff. It just didn’t seem worth it
@@MySqui I know that violins are approved for carry on but I’m not going to assume that it definitely had no value. Life happens and I’m not gonna paint broad strokes. For all I know it was flown by a third party rather than the musician and they chose to check it or maybe some other situation got in the way of them checking it. Honestly we can’t assume
Lost literally everything I had because of a storage unit and covid, everything. After being left homeless, this was a serious hit. I'm still trying to recoup losses. Point being please remember some things weren't abandoned & certainly not forgotten..... Some of us had no choice or lacked the funds to keep our own belongings. You never know the sentiment behind some of these things, if there is any.
I worked at unclaimed baggage in high school and it’s someone’s job to go through the luggage and remove any dangerous/illegal/embarrassing contents before guest are allowed to process them. It’s not staged but it’s also not untouched
As someone who’s luggage was just lost by United just this past week, with almost no communication from United about where my bags were, I have to wonder how much of this stuff is actually just stolen. This is completely unethical.
@Video Games right. The airlines are responsible for luggage, 90% of the time they are the ones that "lose" the luggage. Besides the fact, If someone leaves an item in my car I'm not gonna turn around and sell it. I'm gonna try to get in contact with the person. The airlines need to stay true to their word and really hold those items until the owner contacts them. Because we all know that's a big fat lie.
This store is the epitome of nasty. First off, the prices are ridiculous. $60+ for used jeans that were basically stolen from someone's luggage??? Only donating the raggedy stuff that the charities will have to pay to dispose of?? They have stuff on display that they KNOW who the owners are but they are refusing to return them?? (Hoggle suit, what they thought was legit Basquait art, Donny Osmond clothes) The owner lady trying to make excuses, coming up with stories like "Oh this wedding dress/ ring probably was owned by someone who was cheating. Oh, this person probably didn't really need this laptop for school or work or anything, etc." It's disgusting. ALL of that stuff should be donated. Airlines should not be allowed to profit off of "losing" items in any way. They claim this reduces waste, but donating everything would produce even less waste. This is all just to profit off of misfortune. Disgusting.
They just need to ship it back to the address on the credit card info of the ticket holder who checked the bag. The only time it’s the passengers fault is if they leave bags in the cabin of the plane but I would imagine most people would be trying to get in touch to get that back because it’s usually what contains your electronics and important documents.
On one hand, this place sounds really fun to explore. On the other hand, it really rubs me the wrong way; the owners are so cagey and secretive about their process. And I know there are instances where things are deliberately lost by the airline so they can resell them to stores like this
Delta lost my luggage in 2018, and I never got it back. We even called Delta in Amsterdam, the airport in Norway, both airports in the US, both Delta and KLM headquarters, and nobody could tell me where my suitcase was. I knew what was in my suitcase, but only got half of the money it was worth back 🙃 They tried to say “Oh, so you lost your luggage”, and I think it is absolutely ridiculous, because I did not loose the suitcase, the airline did 😭
I lost luggage and never got it back. Cried the entire day while I was at the passenger services office because I lost stuff that was given to me by my late grandmother. I'm tearing up that it probably ended up in stores like this....
So sorry to hear. This is a sad video in some ways. 😭 A good thing, maybe some people who recently lost luggage can see this video, go to the store in person/online and get back their lost belongings.
I’m so sorry. My grandparents are all passed, so my heart hurts for you. Then you have the gross lady at this store saying that being at her store is like MiNIn’ fOR TreAsuRe 😭
My mom lost her bag 2 times and we definitely went through all trouble filling out paper work for them to find it and send it back to us. The fact it never did and was possibly sold here illegally kinda pisses me off.
I heard from an employee that worked at an airport that if we want them to find our luggage we have to give them money. I understand exactly how you feel.
They definitely staged those bags! They probably didn’t want you filming the sorting process, and gave you staged bags, because they didn’t want to show any personal identifications of who might have previously owned the bags, or contraband, and they probably wanted to ensure that the bags they gave you to ‘sort’ were safe to film in advance.
I worked at goodwill for a summer and there were some…ahem…not for kids items or used condoms occasionally in the stuff. I would hope luggages would be better
honestly, this feels like scavengers and vultures taking advantage of other people's misfortune. makes me sick to think of people like these going through my things, sorting and selling, while i desperately search and wonder and never get over the loss. the whole '90 days' waiting seems completely false, there's no way a towel stayed wet that long, no mould, nothing. anyone who travels knows a wet towel (or socks or anything) makes EVERYTHING completely rank in a day or two. that luggage was lost a few days AT MOST.
I also 'loved' how they made fun of bad fashion or armpit stains. Do all of them simply throw away their clothes if they were on vacation and had no time or nowhere to wash their clothes before return flight? And another thing that points to this being staged is that any sane person would put a dirty T-shirt in a separate bag before throwing it into the suitcase. Anyway, they are going through private stuff that wasn't intended for them to see, and there's no semblance of respect even on camera.
@@Ira__L did you not listen to what she said at all? She said herself she thought they were very much staged bags and how sketchy they were being. Maybe get some better listening skills.
@@tiyaku Did you not read what they wrote at all? They’re agreeing with her assumption of it being staged and adding to the conversation about it. Maybe get some better reading comprehension skills.
Right? I was expecting them to be selling mystery bags for $50 or something, but they're actually sorting through people's property and selling it for $1000s. Sickening.
I was a travel professional for years and this is the exact reason I always advised my clients to NEVER check anything in their luggage that they were not willing to lose. You need to travel with wedding clothes? Ship them separately and have them insured. I don't even begin to understand the mindset of someone who packs expensive items of jewelry into a bag they then let out of their sight.
It's not their fault for being trusting. That's what the whole theater of security at airports is ensuring people do. You're putting a weird blame on people when it's the skeevy stealing airlines stealing dresses that are to blame!
If I ever need to carry something important with me, usually just electronics, it goes in my personal item so I ALWAYS have it on my person. I've never had anything lost, but I don't trust human error with my valuables, let alone human greed 💀
I have a feeling that loads of the incoming suitcases have clearly visible identification and if they allowed y'all back there it would show they were more concerned with profit from the start than giving these item a new life or even getting them back to their true owners.
My thoughts exactly. Or it’s obvious when something hasn’t been sitting closed for three months. That damp towel was real suspicious. I bet some of those cases have perishable items that are suspiciously not out of date or other things like that because they don’t actually wait three months to sell it on.
General rule for packing luggage I've always followed is to only use a carry-on when possible. If you have to check a bag, try to avoid putting anything valuable in the checked bag that you would seriously miss if it was lost. If you have to put something valuable in a checked bag, then make sure your contact information & flight info are both on the outside AND the inside of the bag. Also, take a picture of the contents of your checked bag so that in the event it gets lost, you can have some record of exactly what was lost.
I flew twice a week for 16 years and checked my clothing bag every time. The only time my bag got redirected is when I flew from Hawaii back to San Francisco. My bag when to Australia. It didn’t even buy me a souvenir when it was there.
@@katieegerton6088 same + a T-shirt / top and a jacket or similar. Never put your jacket in checked luggage if travelling to a cold country. Also agree with Selena (OP), things that have sentimental value or high monetary value should be put in carry-on. Not only can luggage get lost, but things can also get stolen.
Video felt very shady. What really threw me over the edge was the Hoggle puppet from Labyrinth. That movie is my all time favorite childhood movie, and to see it in this random luggage store infuriates me. There is no way that the person that's responsible for keeping him safe, just lost it. The airline specifically took it to be put as a display piece for this store
I actually don't think they stole the puppet because the suitcase it was in was missing for 20 YEARS and when it was it was eventually recovered hoggle was in horrible condition. The latex was rotting and it was almost unrecognizable. If the airlines "lost" it with the intention of showing it off as a display they would've taken much better care of it instead of letting it rot away almost to the point of being unreparable. If you look up images of hoggle pre restoration it would become clear that he was in no state to be presented. That would be like if you were presenting a cow at the county fair and you didn't bathe or brush it for years beforehand.
Apparently it was a prototype hoggle, not one of the ones used in the film. It sat in its case unclaimed for years and was very deteriorated by the time anyone found it. This store restored it and made it look like the several hoggle puppets we see in the movie even though that’s not what this particular one originally looked like.
Something feels really shady about this business. I'm not sure whether it's legally shady or just morally. It just leaves a sour taste in my mouth thinking that airlines lost peoples' (often sentimental) valuables and they end up being riffled through by someone looking to make a quick buck.
yeah but if you think about it, what else could they do with all the stuff? That shop is the size of a city block, and that's with the items being sold. If all the lost items just accumulated, it'd eventually be a like a city of lost things. And at least they said a third of it is given to charity shops.
The thing that made me question the business was that they said if the airline couldn't find the owner of the luggage, the luggage was sent to the store in Alabama. They also said at one point that the owner was reimbursed for the lost luggage. If the owner couldn't be found, how could they be reimbursed?
Good point 👏🏻 maybe they’re playing on the 90 days rule . So if they don’t “find” your luggage within 90 days they pay you and then keep the luggage … 🤷🏻♀️
I think what they mean is if the owner contacted the airport about their lost luggage and the airport couldn't find it they reinbusrt them and then the luggage that was left behind and never claimed just gets sold off to these guys and the owner in that case would not get reimbursed unless it happens to be the luggage that some owner somewhere got reimbursed for. Hope that makes sense
TL:DR; Don't go here. This place is shady for a variety of reasons. Also the prices aren't a good deal. Retail value doesn't mean a damn thing. It's a common price trick. Compare the same product to other sellers if you want to know if it's a good deal or not. All the wedding rings, dresses and other clearly special items made me sad. Reading stories from people on here also made me sad and very angry. Lots of cases where luggage was selected to be lost on purpose so it could be sold. The main reason this is sus and shady is because they sell luxury goods used and not just everything that could be sold, like some Walmart T-shirt or similar. Given the other stories in the comment section and the fact that they didn't want Saf or Tyler or anyone in the back makes it really uncool and even more shady. People don't just lose wedding rings. 90 days isn't enough time. There should be a 90 day period to try to contact the person that lost it, and another 6 months at a separate place for people to retrieve their stuff. What really hit me though was the person in the comments who said charity seems nice, until you realize that it's actually them dumping the "garbage" in their eyes that won't make a profit and would otherwise cost them money to get rid of. Also, I compared prices on their online section, clothes, jewelry etc and no, you're not getting a deal. It's a price trick. Some stores even sold the same merch for less and it's brand new. Considering everything is second hand or even more worn, their prices are ridiculous. You might find a okay deal every so often, usually because the store is unfamiliar with the brand if it's outside the USA or popular mainly in another country, like UK or France. But that's just because they don't bother to do much research either. I don't know who comes up with the retail value, but they're wrong. Sometimes even compared to the brand name stores own estimate.
This is not lost or abandoned luggage, it’s basically stolen property that airlines get away with. People call and claim for their possessions and they give a run around during the claiming processes
it’s for luggage that isn’t claimed for a LONG time that the airlines had reported. they don’t just sell it off here the day after a flight, they wait for somebody to claim it and if they don’t overtime then it’s sold
We’ve been missing our bags for a month now. We call almost every day and have been trying to find any info we can to get in touch with anyone who may be able to tell us where they are. All 4 of our bags have tags with our personal contact info, as well as the tags they scan, yet no one can give us any update on where they are. It’s super frustrating to think all of our stuff may be sold off, and we so desperately want it back! No one just leaves all their stuff. Every bag that’s sold off has an owner somewhere trying to claim it. In our case, it’s not just 1. It’s all 4 of our bags!!!
I love how everyone in the comments is bashing the "store". Maybe thanks to Safiya's wide audience more people will be aware of this shady business and will at least know where to expect to find lost items of sentimental value.
Imagine if you were on a flight from Atlanta to London and you realize your luggage was lost once you reach London ? Will you pay for return tickets to Atlanta and then drive 200 miles to the middle of nowhere in Alabama , not knowing if your stolen luggage will actually end up there ? I dont think anybody that has really lost their baggage will have resources means or incentive to get to Scottsboro AL in the hope of finding their lost luggage at the right time. This place is a chop shop selling fake goods branded as lost baggage.
As much as I would love to trawl through this store, the whole thing makes me feel a sense of sadness. I know I've travelled with items that hold sentmental value. Imagining them on a shelf is 🥺

This entire concept infuriates me to be honest lol. I've had my luggage lost by an airline, they never found it, the amount I got reimbursed was nowhere near the amount of goods I had in the suitcase, and to think my stuff is probably in a store in Alabama? Thanks, I hate it.
Yeah I cant image how frustrating this would be to watch, I personally have never lost my luggage (I rarely take something more than hand luggage because i am afraid of losing my stuff) but I can imagine how stressful and infuriating an experience like yours would be.
Yea I feel like it should have been said how much you get reimbursed because it a lot of times is like 60-120$, that is what I have seen affered when standing in line for my own lost luggage. Which is ridiculous because you can hardly even buy a suitcase for that much these days
A lot of this makes me angry as they could have done so much more to find the owner of these products. The Apple products (and other similar electronics) could EASILY be returned to the owners as you register them with Apple. In college I found an iPad and called Apple gave them the serial number and they contacted the owner who gave them permission to provide me with their contact info. I was able to meet them at the local PD and give them back their iPad. The airline could easily do this and identify the owner of the entire suitcase/bag the electronics were left in. Instead they sell them to these people and they wipe all of the content on the devices in order to resell them. A lot of people don’t store everything on the cloud and are loosing sentimental photos, texts, etc. because of this. So sad.
Yeah my uncle’s a photographer and lost his MacBook on a plane and with it so many photos from his clients that he was working on. Including photos from a family friend’s wedding. Just thinking it could’ve ended up at a store like that to be wiped and resold is just horrible.
I imagine that a vast majority of the items that are “recycled” are actually incinerated or put into a landfill (same with a lot of the donated stuff). I work at a landfill and if it really was economically feasible to recycle those items then the landfill would fill up MUCH slower. Clothes especially are very rarely recycled, as it is difficult to repurpose the fibers from so many different types of materials with different chemical processes and colorants added.
My mum has lost her suit case while traveling twice in the last 20 years. A lot of those items are still sorely missed, even though she did everything possible to recover it. It makes me a bit sad to see a whole store of lost luggage :(
yeah it adds to my stress of travelling, they lost my luggage twice I luckily had multiple address spots all over so they got it back to me but every time i make sure anything sentimental goes with me on the plane as much as possible.
People don't realise how easy it can be to lose luggage during travels. The tip about putting a piece of paper with your contact details, or even an email address in a pocket inside. But ultimately pack appropriately. If it's expensive, or sentimental, pack it with you for hand luggage rather than hold luggage. Most of those cases will be hold luggage. And if you're prone to being forgetful with items ie leaving them on places, post it notes on your plane window saying what you brought on to the plane makes sure you walk off with it as well. Especially in times where it's stressful, and flying can be stressful with no delays or plane changes too.
@@Alertse papers, important things and sentimental should be places on your handbag. It it mentioned in your ticket that nothing of importance should be places in the suitcase for such reasons. Even if it just ends up in a different airport no one can promise you that you will get it on time

the fact that she was deciding within seconds which things were deemed what like rapid fire i had a solid indication that it was heavily staged. ive worked retail, and even then we take time to bare minimum inspect things when unpacking for issues before deciding they can go onto the floor. and Chasity was a terrible actress.
Yep, way too fast. I volunteer at an op shop, and any sorter who's even halfway decent will at least give items a proper once-over to check for anything. So staged.
you don't lose your luggage the air port refuses to help and don't find it for you. this whole thing is shady and wrong. the air lines and port need to be held responsbil for all this
The "experiment" of intentionally leaving a bag on a flight and having it show up in the store "weeks later" kinda proves the airlines don't actually wait 90 days ...
As someone who has worked as a baggage handler for an international airline, I NEVER check my bags. If you have to, always check your clothes and put anything you don't want to loose in your carry on. As a rule of thumb be willing to pick up your bag and throw it 10 feet, because that's whats about to happen to it at the airport. Finally, the heavier your bag, the more likely it will get broken, if you want your stuff to survive invest in two well built smaller bags as opposed to one larger one. Seriously I cant count how many 70 pound bags I broke the wheels on because people seem forget that a real person actually has to handle their luggage. Good luck!
I’ve been to the store many times because I grew up near it. They actually do have a ton of thrift store priced items (under $10), but usually the name brand items are on the high end. I once bought a gymshark top new with tags for $12 because they weren’t familiar with the brand since it’s based in the UK and didn’t price it correctly. I’ve gotten good deals a few times on other brands too that I knew were expensive but they just weren’t as popular in the U.S. I do agree that they still shouldn’t price the name brand stuff so high.
Omg that’s what I was thinking the whole time, like what is the reason to shop here over a charity shop where people actually wanted their stuff to be sold.
It just shouldn't be allowed full stop. How this is legal is mind boggling, especially when it should be considered theft by negligence (or in some cases just outright theft, I'm sure). Why on Earth should we allow airports and airlines the financial incentive to lose luggage?
Watching this before and after experiencing having my luggage lost is very different, I think a lot of people that haven’t had to handle airlines giving them the go around about their luggage may not understand, it’s so unnecessarily complicated and aggravating. I honestly think that most of the luggage that is there is probably because people gave up trying to get their luggage back or the airlines just straight up never ‘found’ it. The sentimental things that the airlines lost lost makes me so sad, like I was missing mainly clothes and toiletries and some stuffed animals and I was an anxious wreak until I got it back I can’t imagine the feeling of actually never getting those things that mean so much to you back.
16:27 - When she said "It's a piggy bank!" she looked at the camera right after. Then proceeded to backtrack and say "Is it a piggy bank?" Pretty positive they packed and staged these cases for you, lol. Dang! It would have been nice to see actual cases. They must have something shifty going on.
@@matiekae0414 If you think so. Even Saf mentioned thinking it was staged. Plus, I'm really not the only one who thinks this, lol. The only people who will really know are the people running the store though
I did get some sketchy vibes from a few bits and I’m glad that you also called them out 😅 I also get they probably say recycle instead of toss but there was some stuff I hope they weren’t actually donating. It’s kinda gross for them being not clean enough to sell so they donate it.. specifically the socks and underwear
As far as the recycling goes, I volunteered at a place that gives free clothes to people in need and we were going through weeding out a ton of stuff to make room for new inventory. They said the stuff gets shredded and made into other items (not clothing).
I once almost lost my luggage and it was so devastating! I was so confused when all but one of my luggage arrived and I immediately reported it to a nearby worker. The fact that she said "I'll try to find it but if we can't then there's no helping it". Like, what??? How did one of my luggage get separated from the rest of it and they had no idea where it was? Took them 2 days and a lot of constant phone calls from me to finally retrieve my luggage. I can't imagine losing my things and having it sold off to other ppl bc of irresponsible airlines!!
The reimbursement is a joke too. It was something like 5 dollars a pound for clothes or something. Like you can't fit 100 dollars in makeup in a pound or even most clothes are more than that much less like if you're traveling for something with formal clothes
As someone who both travels frequently (for family, no choice) and who always buys second hand, I actually kind of struggle with this store (not the staff's fault). I find it really, really hard to believe that people don't want those items back (I certainly only pack what I truly need and love) or made zero attempt to get them back in the majority of cases. I'm sure there's a legitimate process and I understand airlines can't hold items forever, but it makes me a little uneasy. When I buy from a second hand store, I always appreciate the fact that someone else was _done_ with the item. I find that hard to believe with the vast majority of this.
I get that the USA is huge and a lot of people fly every day but all of this unclaimed stuff accounting for less than 1% of all airlines luggage seems a little excessive even with people potentially leaving stuff on purpose, this is just sooooo much stuff
There are people that pack the things they don’t care about but needed for the trip (change of clothes, batteries, hair products, etc) and the important things go in their inflight/carryon luggage which stays with the person the whole flight if that makes things slightly better
AS SOMEONE THAT LOST 4 LUGGAGES FROM GREECE TO PARIS TO TEXAS THIS MAKES ME MAD. After learning French and trying to contact every day I finally got my luggage extremely broken after 3 months. It's insane I'm still waiting on compensation.
How absolutely scummy is it when they overcharge for a plane ticket, require loads of personal information just to get on the airplane, and then they sell your lost luggage for more profit instead of connecting the dots -- dots that we KNOW they have -- to get that luggage back to you. This should not be legal. They're crooks.
If they know which flight the bags were meant to be in, they know everyone that was traveling on that flight. They have access to every passenger's information especially contact details, they can send mass emails/text messages everyday till they have gotten a response. Now if they accidentally send the bags to the wrong flight, that could be trickier because there are many options as to which flight they were originally meant to be on. There should be a dedicated team to track these things however, hire a couple of data analysts to do just THAT, because judging by the amount of stuff in here, it happens more often than you would think!
@@smk6736 Even if they’re luggage was sent on the wrong flight or stayed behind, the luggage tags would still be on the bags with the identification number
@@evn1293 Luggage tags sometimes get ripped off in handling. Luggage gets tossed around, goes up and down conveyor belts, gets stacked several suitcases high, etc.
@@justanotherjessica That's why you put redundant information on the inside as well. It's understandable that a tag might get torn or something. There are plenty of stories in this comment section of suspicious lost baggage because it had valuable goods and had tags in and outside the bag, but normal boring luggage getting returned to the same person.
I always, *always* put valuable/sentimental items in my carry-on, and I try not to check a bag if I can help it. I will definitely continue to do so after seeing this store lmaoo
I’m almost positive most of the luggage in the warehouse has contact information that they didn’t bother to use so they could profit off of peoples items and steal them. Even worse, I would feel so wrong trying on the items. With thrift stores people willingly donate, but with this it is still somebody else’s item that has just been stolen :(
It doesn’t feel right that an airline that loses my bag can legit just sell it for a profit…the store is a cool concept but I know I’d be angry if I knew my things could be sold while I was waiting for them to be returned to me.
It’s usually not for profit. They have to reimburse the flyer who lost their luggage up to a certain amount, so this would be to recoup those expenses.
@@emilybandurski3155 I get that now, thanks! I just know if I had the option between reimbursement and my things, I’d rather have my things. Like, yes they call if they can figure out it’s my bag. But part of me wonder how hard they try to ID bags and/or if others are identifiable and simply lost in administrative limbo before getting sent here. Like I get that stuff happens, and they have to pay for lost luggage, and there are costs involved. But they are a business at the end of the day and if I pay to check a bag, there’s an implicit understanding that I’m expecting to get that bag back.
@@emilybandurski3155 If they don't want to refund the customer they can actively search for the luggage they lost. If they don't do that, that's probably because they still get a profit even if they have to refund the passenger

Me too! But I guess people like us don’t just abandon bags, so it makes a little sense? Like, these are chaos people
i have a feeling the employees didnt necessarily staged the bags for them but maybe went through them beforehand just to be sure there wasn't anything inappropriate in there lol so it would explain it's not neatly packed
@ i had a boss who, while admittedly was a chaos person he didn't abandon his luggage, atlanta just couldn't find it. he was a bit of a pistol so he put up a huge fit when they lost it and they got sick of explaining to him, so they finally took him down to the GIANT chamber all the luggage pass through in one of the busiest passenger airports in the world and told him "fine, you find it" and he finally shut up and filed a claim.

Whoa I didn't even think of that. Honestly it must be the shady people who procure their "lost" stock. I had an iPad stolen before so it definitely happens.
You just "delete" a whole system through the laptop and put another clean one. That's why I think they are stealing. It's easy to break a password and find info about owner and call them/e-mai. So for every elec. device they have they have to clean it before selling. Disgusting
Lol I’m currently rewatching and I just saw my comment from when this video was first posted 😂 Same thought! How can there be so many “lost” Apple products when Apple devices have ways to find your lost stuff. Unless they tried to contact the owner and the owner never responded? Hmmm…. 😑
This feels like theft if I’m honest. Not to mention that the airline probably makes more money selling it than it spends compensating people who’ve lost baggage. Wonder how much of this baggage they actually tried to return to the owner and how much they put aside as an extra source of income.
I mean she did say that the airline keeps the luggage for 90 days and that 99.5% of people do get their lost luggage back. And I think its better that its sold rather than just thrown away.
@@potato9410 so a towel stayed damp for 90 days? Also she mentioned hopes luggage showed up in a couple weeks. And yeah most people get their luggage back. That doesn’t make someone’s wedding dress, family jewels, or signed merchandise any less special to them though.
@@roanc3709 i agree that the unpacking part and hopes luggage was kinda suspicious, especially how in hopes video she gave away gift cards from unclaimed baggage. but if the airlines and the store have done everything that they could to try to get the bag back to the owner and still fail, then i dont see whats wrong with selling the unclaimed items and making the best out of a shitty situation. also airlines have to reimburse people who lose their bags so i dont think they would purposely "lose" bags to sell them.
I will say from the reimbursement they ask you to estimate how much it was worth. I lost my bag going from America to England. I was given $200 to buy new clothing because my bag wasn’t gonna show up in England for 4-6 days. If they never got my bag to me I would’ve been given around $600 total. Me too but I also currently have an office with at least 50 suitcases that no one has claimed for more than three months and many are contacted and didn't come to pick it up or took it from the delivery service so it came back to the airport.
Kudos Saf for making comments in the video (and keeping them through the editing process) that were honest about how you felt about the overall experience and questioning some of the things that seemed sus about what was going on behind the scenes. I think the jacket you found made you look sort of like a detective, which I thought was an interesting coincidence given the situation... While I enjoyed the outfit reveal fashion show and seeing the interesting items, it is definitely incredibly sad how those items ended up in the shop in the first place. The high prices of most of the items surprised me as well.
People don’t just “not claim” their baggage. Usually the airline loses it and the poor person can’t get it back unfortunately. They do. You would be surprised at the number of people who just up and forget that they even had luggage or don't recognize their own luggage. The amount of times I've called people and asked them if they forgot their luggage is much higher than logic would suggest. Also, people not recognizing their bags. I've had multiple instances where we have a person looking for their bag, me asking them if the one bag on the belt is theirs, them saying no a few times, and me then reading the name off of the tag and comparing the number with their stub to find out that yes, it actually is their bag, they just can't tell it apart from the other 50 black bags that came off the belt.

The fact that it isn't even a thrift store with reasonable prices is so messed up. Profiting heavily off airline greed. But this was a good video to show us Saf, no hate for you!
Right? My thought as well. Even if they don’t explicitly call themselves a thrift store I feel like that is how it is often portrayed by people who go here. Sorry but $15 for a sheer top or $70 for a pair of pants or $330 or a sweatshirt or $600 for a jacket is not a thrift store.

Store Owner: “Look at all the lost things that could never possibly be returned yet I’m able to name drop the famous people they belonged to” Bishhhhhhh
If all lost baggage from US domestic airlines ends up here, why not have the place be a hub for people to claim their lost baggage instead? Cuz duh, profit. It's kind of gross that this arrangement, that allows airlines to quickly sell "lost" luggage rather than go through the process of returning it, exists. Watching this and knowing people who have lost luggage that *coincidentally* held a lot of high-value items makes me sick.
I don’t know if they actually do it but this place is supposed to be like an end of the line place for the luggage they can’t return. They spend 90 days trying to find the owner which seems like a pretty long time then if they can’t the 1% of items that couldn’t be returned get sold. They’re not selling it instead of returning it, they’re selling it if they can’t return it. If they sold every single lost bag without trying to return it then this shop would be absolutely overflowing with items and they wouldn’t be able to handle it. It would just be super expensive if they put all the items in a building and waited for the owners to come get it. After 90 days it’s unlikely the owners are gonna come get the stuff so they would just be paying to store the items indefinitely. So it’s better to have the stuff sold and used by someone new than it to just sit forever. And they need to pay all the staff and the maintenance fees and the building bills and everything so if they didn’t sell the stuff then surely they would lose a lot of money. If they didn’t sell it then it probably would all go to the tip.
Do you really think people will go to Alabama just to get their lost stuff? Maybe if it’s high value, but realistically, if they don’t sell things, they would just have mountains of luggage lying around, never getting picked up
So if they pay the airlines for this baggage, doesn’t that incentivise “losing” a percentage of luggage? Also it being a whole monopoly and them not letting you look at their warehouse feels…very sus. 😬
I work for the lost luggage department of a european airlien. When a luggage is definetly lost, the passenger has to be reimbursed for it. In europe that reimbursement is approx. 1200$. So that is not really a great deal for the airline 😅
@@MaraMara89 it’s not a no filming rule, it’s a no entry rule and even then it’s kinda weird. It’s common sense that there’s gonna be dodgy shit in strangers luggage, they aren’t responsible for that and can ask for it not to be included in the video. It only makes sense if they’re trying to stop people from knowing things or seeing things they want to hide, for example evidence that these could easily be returned to their owners or that they aren’t kept by the airline for 90 days.
"a third is sold, a third is recycled, and a third is donated." It feels dishonest to me to pretend that none of it gets thrown away; the business just puts off the dirty work of throwing away the most unsellable items on the charities. This store is already a second-hand store, so how much of what they "donate" to the charities is even sellable or usable? Charity shops get tons of donations and a great deal of it is not something anyone will buy and ends up being thrown away in the end - the shops don't have infinite storage. Obviously there is some amount of this stuff that ends up being garbage, whether rightfully so or not, and it makes me suspicious that the owner tries to frame this as a 100% perfect no-waste situation for all the items when that's not even realistic.
that's one thing, but "recycling" can mean a lot of things. Greenwashing includes calling burning general waste as recycling because "it gets recycled into electricity!" one way to make the statistics look nicer for sure

Just a huge word of caution to anyone who goes to these Amazon returns/liquidation stores. They are NOTORIOUS for counterfeits. So many people get in trouble on eBay for selling fakes that they had no idea weren't legit otherwise, and IP law is strict liability, so if a company comes at you for counterfeiting, you're still on the hook. Keep this in mind when buying stuff for cheap like this. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Not saying you can't magically find some real stuff, but spend cautiously. @@annapruitt5546 unfortunately yeah. if a company sees the stuff your selling and finds out its fake, you can be held liable for that, even if you had no knowledge or intent. Sounds crazy but that's how TM law works. Some of these places also get in trouble too.

Even if those are just "objects", it made completely depressed. So it makes me mad seeing people profiting from lost/stolen luggages. I'm sure all these people tried to get their luggage back. This is really fucked up.
i mean, unless it was a very specific item that is personalized enough to be distinguished, there's no way for the person to know for sure it was theirs. they'd also have no way of proving it
@@Ray_Vun also at that point is is 90 days too late, i think if found, it would be just easier to pay for it - dont forget that you were reimbursed your money
@@poro9084 I know she said that but you should do some research on it. It's like paying $120 for brand new shoes and they give you $12 for them. The rings....I would fly there to get it. Sentimental and expensive. I can prove mine because engraved.
My guess is that somewhere in the fine print of the Terms & Conditions when you purchase your ticket, it says that luggage not claimed after X days is forfeit and cannot be reclaimed. So after that time period has passed, the airline is the legal owner of the items (and then they sell it to stores like this one.)
Agreed! I was shocked at how much the items were. And this is what they considered to be "greatly reduced price"? I'm glad I'm not the only person in the comments talking about this because wow
girl, i work at a charity thrift store, where we don't get paid, i'm a volunteer, we save kittens,a nd we don't charge NEAR as much than this for profit company. the most we put on a good pair of adidas shoes is $10.
American companies are something else holy shit. This is so shady I can' believe it's legal! Seeing all of the instruments there breaks my heart. So many musicians hold serious sentimental attachments to their instruments that no amount of monetary reimbursement can make up for.
Yeah, it makes me sad too. I’m not a musician, but an artist, and I just can’t imagine losing my favorite art supplies, especially my sketchbooks. Sadly, as an American though, I’m not too surprised this is legal, our justice system is wack, to say the least
Happens everywhere , and they always find buyers for this stuff - typically the hillbillies of every civilization - most stuff sold is not really lost luggage but overpriced FAKES . They can sell it at a premium with no guarantees of authenticity by disguising it as LOST Baggage. If you get a fake Versace or Gucci - you cannot blame the seller , nor will you ever find the real owner ( if it had one in the first place!)
Except this doesn’t just happen in America. If you actually watched the video, you’d know that the first one was literally a European version of luggage theft. Assumptions fucking hurt dude, do better.
Watching this video just made me so sad and feel so scummy. Losing luggage is a big fear of mine and I imagine other people. To know that airlines will pawn off my personal sentimental belongings to a lady scamming people somewhere in Alabama with no hope of having it returned to me even if it's my WEDDING RING OR DRESS??? that's downright disgusting
Okay so I’m calling B.S on the Certificates of “authenticity” and “everything we sell is real”. The second she said that I knew if I saw a Coach bag she’s full of crap and sure enough 10:11. Worked at the Coach distribution center for 5 years told hundreds of people hundreds of times our company doesn’t have such thing as authentication services or certificates. So unless every single coach bag they ever found happened to have an original purchase receipt inside of it, there is 0 way to tell it’s real or replica.
If it's so impossible to tell a fake from real, what's the point in even buying a real coach bag? I know there's issues with fakes, but there has to be some way to authenticate a bag? Bc if not what's the point? Granted I'm someone who doesn't understand luxury items to begin with, especially brands. But I'm curious how you feel about fakes
@@kortenmary the only real reason I won't buy a fake is because I am unaware of the means of production. Are the labor laws upheld? Are the quality of the materials good and safe? Are the workers treated well and paid fairly...Etc
@@kortenmary it’s technically illegal for them to sell fake brands, so you’re buying it illegally. That’s why not a lot of people buy and resell fakes. That and the possible embarrassment if people find out
I can't imagine how someone who is not a criminal, a substance abuser, or died right the next day of travelling can actively choose to abandon any luggage. if i lost an item I would be at the throat of the airline for years. I bet that some of the items are items left behind by accident, like a jacket or a book or a small kid's toy that rolled away. and many leave the books they finished reading behind. but ipads?? they cost a fortune. how can you forget tens of something so heavy?? i lost a suitcase for less than 30 hours and I was on the brick of breakdown and reporting the lost luggage 3 minutes after exiting the security check
Actually, in many occasions, the airlines don't make any attempts to contact the passenger, or they call once, say they'll update, but never does. And when you call back, they say they don't have any updates. It's a mismanagement issue. Airlines are not the mot well-managed companies
I like that the stuff isn't just being thrown out but I can't help but think that the fact that airlines can and will sell the "lost" luggage to a store like this might incentivize them to not really look hard for the owners... My friend had her luggage lost once and she had to contact them multiple times until it turned up even though she had her name and contact info on a tag on the handle (and it was still there when she eventually got it back, so it's not like it got ripped off) Also considering how expensive this store still is, it's not even really for low income folks to get affordable second hand goods, it just seems like an involuntary expensive goodwill for people to have fun going through everything bc of the story tbh :/ but definitely seems like an interesting experience to look around (and i guess that's what they're trying to be)!
I was thinking the same thing... Like airlines are notorious for losing luggage and not making it easy to get back. It's kind of shocking but also makes so much sense that they're actually making a profit off of all that stuff
Also makes me wonder what the “contract” they have with the airlines is and how much the airlines end up actually profiting (if at all) with shipping and all that.
It just seems really scummy, imagine you lost something super dear to you and they end up selling it to a place like this :/ like saf can do whatever she wants but I hate how it promotes shopping more at these places

Finally
I know it wasn't for sale but don't we all need a life size Hoggle?!
🙏 Thanks so much. This is really effing smart
People also don’t realize how often the handles rip off so that’s another reason the backup inside is a great idea
That's really good advice, thank you!
Honestly I’m gonna probably do this
I'll never forget when I lost my luggage in Scotland.
I don't usually purchase allot of shoes nor expensive shoes at that, I save and then buy something I really like and it was devastating for me because they were brand new that I purchased for the wedding with an Oscar De La Renta dress that was also taken, smh.
what an angel!

These bags are completely staged

The fact that they lied about this is not a good look.

its such a strange ethical position for a place to resell other people's missing (stolen?) luggage but destroy counterfeit branded goods to prevent people selling them.
Riiiight.
Let's be real, they're not destroying those fake items, they're selling them on the side.
Is it though? It's not like they're stealing the luggage, it's unclaimed. It can't just sit in limbo forever

They sent me $274 as a reimbursement!

I have a violin which cost $350 and I would be so mad if it was "lost"
Right? Not to mention how expensive instruments can be! Or the attachments you make to the instrument you've been using for however long.
I relate to this so much lol. Instruments are expensive.

Worked for me 👍🏽
Good tip! Signal boost
As somebody that has worked with lost luggage in Europe, this didn't happen in the airline I worked for.
That’s what I’m thinking about like… luggage is clearly labeled with owner information
Honestly, I didn't consider that. But now that I think about it...yeah, that's VERY strange from the standpoint of your average person.

Where are the bodies Southwest?!
I mean already from the staged stuff bro

I'm fed up with people running around and praising companies for donating trash because "at least they donate something!!"

i completely forgot where hoggle ended up and it surprised me when I saw it I wish someone would just break in and return it to the family these scummy people should have this piece of art and film history
That's absolutely reprehensible.
Agreed.... theres absolutely no way in hell this is done honestly.

How the store can charge that much when they didn’t even pay for the clothes is…. Alarming…

(not justifying the prices, they're definitely ridiculous, but just eanted to point that out😅)
Yes they said they have contracts with all major airlines.
Everything else would be in my carry-on
Look into the story around the Hoggle Puppet. They are 100% not just "loosing" people's luggage.

i've found a good way to deal with this is to actually ask at the gate as soon as it opens for the next layover for them to check for your checked in bags. started doing it when my dad told me to (he travels a lot for work) and i've never had an issue with baggage. more impressively, he hasn't either pretty much ever and he basically travelled internationally once or twice a month every year for about 20 years

Look up the story of Hoggle. That's actually him 😓😓 he was rotted when they found him 😭

@viiont eooiy Yeah, 2/3rds off for stolen second hand clothes isn't good value in my book.
My uncle works in the baggage department of a huge airline. The sheer amount of "lost" luggage that is stolen rather than lost would shock most people. Airlines intentionally lose or hide luggage and do not wait 90 days at all.
So messed up
Let's normalize specifying that the *AIRLINE* LOST your luggage.

Lost literally everything I had because of a storage unit and covid, everything. After being left homeless, this was a serious hit. I'm still trying to recoup losses. Daylight robbery. This is done on purpose. There's absolutely NO WAY there can be so much unclaimed baggage. They "lose" it on purpose
I have a feeling majority of the items in this store are stolen. The whole thing feels shady. No one loses their luggage, the airlines lose it.
United and American are the worst.
Disgusting.
damn. anyways.
I completely agree
Seriously it's such a red flag
They just need to ship it back to the address on the credit card info of the ticket holder who checked the bag. The only time it’s the passengers fault is if they leave bags in the cabin of the plane but I would imagine most people would be trying to get in touch to get that back because it’s usually what contains your electronics and important documents.
exactly my thoughts, they're just disgusting
On one hand, this place sounds really fun to explore. On the other hand, it really rubs me the wrong way; the owners are so cagey and secretive about their process. And I know there are instances where things are deliberately lost by the airline so they can resell them to stores like this
Delta lost my luggage in 2018, and I never got it back. We even called Delta in Amsterdam, the airport in Norway, both airports in the US, both Delta and KLM headquarters, and nobody could tell me where my suitcase was. I knew what was in my suitcase, but only got half of the money it was worth back 🙃 They tried to say “Oh, so you lost your luggage”, and I think it is absolutely ridiculous, because I did not loose the suitcase, the airline did 😭
i would have cried lmaoo
I lost luggage and never got it back. Cried the entire day while I was at the passenger services office because I lost stuff that was given to me by my late grandmother. I'm tearing up that it probably ended up in stores like this....

So sorry to hear. This is a sad video in some ways. 😭
A good thing, maybe some people who recently lost luggage can see this video, go to the store in person/online and get back their lost belongings.

They definitely staged those bags! Yeah, can you imagine how much actual contraband there is in left bags?
Probably also dirty contaminated clothing. If you're coming home from vacation you probably did not wash your clothes before shoving them in a bag.

It does
I was thinking the exact same thing about the towel ! That was such a lie .

Maybe because it's not their fault and the AIRPORT that lost THEIR luggage and made no attempts at all to help?
Most people can't afford and generally aren't even aware of other options, don't get it twisted.

@@Maob08 it also took almost 4 months after her bag was lost to appear online. She didn't upload the 1st video till she saw her bag online.
This might be too much info but I always put underwear in my carry on just in case my checked bag goes missing.
@@katieegerton6088 Yes! Also a good idea to put bathing suit in carry on if applicable.

What’s hoghle
I actually don't think they stole the puppet because the suitcase it was in was missing for 20 YEARS and when it was it was eventually recovered hoggle was in horrible condition. The latex was rotting and it was almost unrecognizable. If the airlines "lost" it with the intention of showing it off as a display they would've taken much better care of it instead of letting it rot away almost to the point of being unreparable. If you look up images of hoggle pre restoration it would become clear that he was in no state to be presented. That would be like if you were presenting a cow at the county fair and you didn't bathe or brush it for years beforehand.
That's a little unhinged
Apparently it was a prototype hoggle, not one of the ones used in the film. It sat in its case unclaimed for years and was very deteriorated by the time anyone found it. This store restored it and made it look like the several hoggle puppets we see in the movie even though that’s not what this particular one originally looked like.
Something feels really shady about this business. I'm not sure whether it's legally shady or just morally. It just leaves a sour taste in my mouth thinking that airlines lost peoples' (often sentimental) valuables and they end up being riffled through by someone looking to make a quick buck.
And the crushing of fake designer watches- like people could still use them??

yeah but if you think about it, what else could they do with all the stuff? That shop is the size of a city block, and that's with the items being sold.

@Age of Empires Multiplayer Gameplay Oh I see. Sorry this happened to you :(
TL:DR; Don't go here.
The fact that these airlines are profiting from peoples lost items (that THEY, the AIRLINE lost)... is just so horrible 💔😢
they said they compensate the flyer for their lost bag
They payout the people who make lost claims. If you don't claim it...
it’s for luggage that isn’t claimed for a LONG time that the airlines had reported. they don’t just sell it off here the day after a flight, they wait for somebody to claim it and if they don’t overtime then it’s sold

I agree and seeing the ruby ring made me irrationally angry.
@@ivoryandgold88 I’m curious if you could prove ownership for something that expensive what they would do
A lot of this makes me angry as they could have done so much more to find the owner of these products. So sad.

Honestly this seemed innocent enough at the start but as I continued watching I felt more and more disgusted. Humans can be really evil sometimes
I imagine that a vast majority of the items that are “recycled” are actually incinerated or put into a landfill (same with a lot of the donated stuff). I work at a landfill and if it really was economically feasible to recycle those items then the landfill would fill up MUCH slower. Clothes especially are very rarely recycled, as it is difficult to repurpose the fibers from so many different types of materials with different chemical processes and colorants added.
im even skeptical on their “donating”. they said right at the beginning that they smash knockoff rolex’ cuz it’s “ethical”. instead of donating them 🤷
My mum has lost her suit case while traveling twice in the last 20 years.

Good luck!

I'm sorry but for second hand items (basically) that you know the company got for dirt cheap, it makes no sense for everything to be THAT expensive.
That's how businesses work. Get it for cheap, sell it for more...

+
it totally gave the vibes of a carefully curated experience, like they want to come of as trustworthy as possible
Totally, the suitcases were so staged it hurts 😅 They at least could TRY to make it look realistic
As far as the recycling goes, I volunteered at a place that gives free clothes to people in need and we were going through weeding out a ton of stuff to make room for new inventory. They said the stuff gets shredded and made into other items (not clothing).
No second hand store takes used socks or underwear nor any charity. They toss those.
Me, too. I'd be so depressed.
Oh they can find it you have to give them $ and see how fast they will find it for you. Can't believe they made a business out of lost luggage.
That is such an awful response. Like?? What do they mean "there's no helping it"??? Your luggage didn't disappear off the face of the earth??
The reimbursement is a joke too. It was something like 5 dollars a pound for clothes or something. Like you can't fit 100 dollars in makeup in a pound or even most clothes are more than that much less like if you're traveling for something with formal clothes
@@ea5145 Agree, obviously the whole time they had it and decided to make a profit off of it.
This store should be shut down. This is legal robbery. Absolutely disgusting.
I don't think some people let those items go voluntarily either..
And they paid to check that bag no less
I get that the USA is huge and a lot of people fly every day but all of this unclaimed stuff accounting for less than 1% of all airlines luggage seems a little excessive
even with people potentially leaving stuff on purpose, this is just sooooo much stuff
The airlines compensate people way more than the bag is worth usually. Most people would rather buy new with that money. It makes sense really.
It's insane I'm still waiting on compensation.
but overall its ok lol it was just extremely frustrating I had no clothes for so long
How absolutely scummy is it when they overcharge for a plane ticket, require loads of personal information just to get on the airplane, and then they sell your lost luggage for more profit instead of connecting the dots -- dots that we KNOW they have -- to get that luggage back to you.
I get it's not Saf's fault but making a video like this just promotes this even more
@@evn1293 Luggage tags sometimes get ripped off in handling.
@@emilybandurski3155 Uses to say they actually do that though? Many people have to fight just to get it. It's definitely for profit.
@@emilybandurski3155 If they don't want to refund the customer they can actively search for the luggage they lost. If they don't do that, that's probably because they still get a profit even if they have to refund the passenger
I'd be mad too, but they also give you 3 months to claim it
All I know is that I pack my suitcase completely different than the ones they gave you as examples. Carefully calculated to maximize space, options, and even the laundry bag to separate clean from dirty. I think we need more Saf psychoanalytical, story-time luggage adventures!
Agreed, the imaginings of who the owner was were my favourite part of the video 😂👌
@@FFigueira Oh, makes complete sense. They don’t want her to pull out dirty tissues, things that might have a name or something written on it, etc.
Just odd with a pile of shoes and then the designer sunnies put back in an outer pocket. Product placement was just funny, heehee. I think that bag was my favorite.
How are they able to sell the Apple products? There's no way to wipe an iPad without the user passcode. Super shady.
Whoa I didn't even think of that. Honestly it must be the shady people who procure their "lost" stock. I had an iPad stolen before so it definitely happens.
Very late reply, but there is a way to factory reset any apple device without a password. All you need is a cord and a computer.
Hmmm…. 😑
@@CyberDykeso this works UNLESS they are iCloud locked. In that case you cannot fully factory reset them without the original account's credentials.
Honestly… this hurts my heart. I’m sure several people actually tried to get their items back but they were sent on a goose chase.
I had pack for a month long international trip but still…..
I would be horrified to have my luggage be sold like that. I have lost luggage for nearly a week but thankfully was eventually reunited with it.
Next time put your address in your bag just in case, so they know whose luggage it is as soon as they open it
Me too but I also currently have an office with at least 50 suitcases that no one has claimed for more than three months and many are contacted and didn't come to pick it up or took it from the delivery service so it came back to the airport.

Happy good evening 🙂
Amazing collab!! I’m so happy for both of you
This is the best crossover ever
Heyyyy
I once checked my bags but was so goddamed later passing trough the massive security lines that I lost the flight and my bag just flew to another country on its own. I never seen it again
@@Strannnge no. And I didn’t go on holiday anymore cause it was a cheap airline so when you miss your flight you just miss it you have to buy a complete new ticket to where you were going
Aren't they required to remove your luggage if you didn't board the plane?
@@PromiseSoul648 no I was late. I was meant to board the plane so when it’s time for take off it’s time for take off. It happens a lot specially during lay overs the bags go but not the people
That's why you should travel with an ugly, kinda disgusting bag. Never had any problem and my travel bag looks like shit
This is actually so sad for the people that lost all of those luggage…
This makes me so angry tbh, and makes me believe that trash taste who recently had their whole recording equipment lost by aer lingus had this happen to them. It should honestly be illegal to do this.
People don’t loose their luggage, airlines do. Blame them.
She literally bought shit and helped this company profit, why are you all glossing over that fact?
@@davidwong656 You need to read the other comments, people are pissed that this is happening and rightly so.
@@lisagillam5785 no, people are pissed that "the store" exists, everyone is as usual ignoring the fact that safiya is really tone deaf sometimes and runs around other peoples stolen things playing little outfit games then handing money over to the shitty establishment. Most people who watch this will vaguely remember a slight criticism of "sus" and mostly her running around having a great time. People should be pissed at her too for giving money to these assholes with no thought.
Store Owner: “Look at all the lost things that could never possibly be returned yet I’m able to name drop the famous people they belonged to”
Bishhhhhhh
Maybe if it’s high value, but realistically, if they don’t sell things, they would just have mountains of luggage lying around, never getting picked up
@@rachelcookie321 i highly doubt airlines spend 90 days trying to find the owner.
@@c5689 exactly. they do, if so probably 1 call and that's all. I'm doubt it anyway.
People get to claim $ for their lost baggage tho
So if they pay the airlines for this baggage, doesn’t that incentivise “losing” a percentage of luggage? Also it being a whole monopoly and them not letting you look at their warehouse feels…very sus. 😬
Yeah, in my country they at least auction them up publicly. This whole business seems to be really suspicious.
@@elel6877 it feels really shady and weird?
there could be illegal things and not camera friendly things (sex toys etc) so no filming rule make sense to me
I work for the lost luggage department of a european airlien.
Yeah, that felt off to me, too. I'd rather they just said upfront that some of it wasn't usable and goes straight to the landfill.

Edit: I know this because I work in the IP law field and we deal with this stuff on a daily basis.
Whaaat? I would get in trouble for unknowingly buying a counterfeit item? What about the place that sold it to me? Would they get in trouble?
@@annapruitt5546 unfortunately yeah. if a company sees the stuff your selling and finds out its fake, you can be held liable for that, even if you had no knowledge or intent. Sounds crazy but that's how TM law works. Some of these places also get in trouble too.

@@lunarae2266 Nah you'd be okay because you're just like any other buyer - plus you're not trying to profit off of something you bought (if you're going to keep it). Selling is the problem.
Unfortunately, that is something you have to be extremely careful about. I used to admin for a Facebook buy and sell group before Marketplace was a thing. There was a span of, like, a few months here and there where members were messaging me because the same two people kept making new accounts, getting in and trying to sell their counterfeit items. I don't know how they kept getting in. Wasn't me. Anyway, they eventually stopped, but it was such an ordeal.
So I’m confused. I thought the woman said that bags can only be sold to the store after 90 day unclaimed. But your friend said she purposefully lost her luggage and it did end up on the site weeks later. That is much less than three months.
In the video the airline says it will be shipped to Alabama after three days (edit: this is in Hopes video about losing her luggage on purpose, not this video)

The only question that wasn’t answered for me is do people ever come into the store to either find their lost item OR demand their lost item back?!?
i mean, unless it was a very specific item that is personalized enough to be distinguished, there's no way for the person to know for sure it was theirs. they'd also have no way of proving it

My guess is that somewhere in the fine print of the Terms & Conditions when you purchase your ticket, it says that luggage not claimed after X days is forfeit and cannot be reclaimed. So after that time period has passed, the airline is the legal owner of the items (and then they sell it to stores like this one.)
and it is discounted at the store. You could just buy it back.

Not just American companies doing this unfortunately
Happens everywhere , and they always find buyers for this stuff - typically the hillbillies of every civilization - most stuff sold is not really lost luggage but overpriced FAKES . They can sell it at a premium with no guarantees of authenticity by disguising it as LOST Baggage. If you get a fake Versace or Gucci - you cannot blame the seller , nor will you ever find the real owner ( if it had one in the first place!)
they literally showed a european version in the beginning doing this...
Interesting input! Also, 26:07 😮
There are teams of people who are hired and taught to authenticate these items. They are INDEED REAL! NO FAKES!
If it's so impossible to tell a fake from real, what's the point in even buying a real coach bag? I know there's issues with fakes, but there has to be some way to authenticate a bag? Bc if not what's the point?

I bet that some of the items are items left behind by accident, like a jacket or a book or a small kid's toy that rolled away. and many leave the books they finished reading behind. but ipads?? they cost a fortune. how can you forget tens of something so heavy?? i lost a suitcase for less than 30 hours and I was on the brick of breakdown and reporting the lost luggage 3 minutes after exiting the security check
I just hope if the owners can't claim them that they are wiped completely so no information is on them before getting sold.
My friend had her luggage lost once and she had to contact them multiple times until it turned up even though she had her name and contact info on a tag on the handle (and it was still there when she eventually got it back, so it's not like it got ripped off)
Also considering how expensive this store still is, it's not even really for low income folks to get affordable second hand goods, it just seems like an involuntary expensive goodwill for people to have fun going through everything bc of the story tbh :/ but definitely seems like an interesting experience to look around (and i guess that's what they're trying to be)!
There’s also a goodwill down the road
I was thinking the same thing... Like airlines are notorious for losing luggage and not making it easy to get back. It's kind of shocking but also makes so much sense that they're actually making a profit off of all that stuff
Also makes me wonder what the “contract” they have with the airlines is and how much the airlines end up actually profiting (if at all) with shipping and all that.
It just seems really scummy, imagine you lost something super dear to you and they end up selling it to a place like this :/ like saf can do whatever she wants but I hate how it promotes shopping more at these places
