  • Snowy Owls (Bubo scandiacus) are the heaviest owls of North America. Although Great Gray Owls are longer in size, Snowy Owls are much heavier.
    Snowy Owls breed in the high Arctic, but in winter they can roam over considerable distances in search of food. Their main food source is lemmings, but when hungry or when lemmings are not around, Snowy Owls will eat other small mammals, as well as small birds and even carrion.
    Female Snowy Owls are white with black barring, older males can be almost pure white. This bird is believed to be a younger male, because of the limited barring it shows.
