Great Gray Owl - The largest owl in the USA

Great Gray Owl (Strix nebulosa) is the largest North American owl. Although larger than any other owl on the continent, it is not the biggest (heaviest) owl. Great Gray Owls live in harsh, cold environments and they are mostly a whole lot of feathers, which help them with insulation during the cold winter months. They feed mostly on small mammals and specialize in finding voles under (!) the snow. They can locate their prey without seeing them, because their ears are placed asymmetrical on their head and their large facial disc funnels the sound into their ears, allowing to hunt by sound with incredible precision.
