Thanks FB... this was fun to watch. Loved seeing you out on the much cleaner Lake Mich... whooshing along your way... whooshing you could go just a bit faster.😅 Gord

Great video I live in Chicago have a house in South Haven right behind the dune you showed when you were coming in I have made the same trip you did many years ago you were lucky with the weather.I dont have a boat anymore but still have house in SOHA Great adventure
You are lucky to have a house in South Haven. It is one of our favorite towns! I bet you love escaping all the hustle and bustle in Chicago for beautiful South Haven!
Thanks for watching us travel on Freebird. We love all the small coastal towns of Michigan and the clear water of Lake Michigan. Great place to visit in summer.
@@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop sorry we missed you. We were out walking the city. Heading out at first light to head south before the storm. River by next week Saturday.
Glad you enjoyed the video. A trawler speed crossing would have saved a lot of fuel but would have been miserable in the swells that day. Our 24mph cruising speed made for a much more comfortable and fun ride in 1/3 the time. And boating is supposed to be fun. Right? 🛥
We have boated from Chicago to South Haven many times and docked along the same wall as you were docked at the Municipal Marina. However, we learned a hard lesson on one of our stays and that is to tie up with the bow , not the stern, facing Lake Michigan . When storms roll in on the Black River, the waves can be unrelenting and will grab the wide stern of the boat with more force than if they head into the bow. I broke a finger while tying, retying and retying again our boat and relocating fenders to protect from a major storm that rolled through in the middle of the night. If docked on a wall, we now always tie up with the bow facing potential waves. I hope you didn’t have an issue-I don’t know when you recorded your stay but from the empty marina I assume it was early in the season.
Thanks for your comment and advice on docking. This video was shot in early spring and we had great weather. In the spring we like to sit in the warm afternoon sun, plus our dingy lowers on the port side. We love dingy rides up the Black River. In the fall, on the way home we usually doc with bow toward the lake since wind and waves seem more frequent. We have been lucky docking in South Haven but have heard it can get rough if the weather turns.🛟
Our engines are Volvo D12's,12 liters, and 675 hp each. We have found them to be very reliable and surprisingly efficient for their size. Thanks for riding along!
No, the freighter is a working boat with low maneuverability and ability to stop. Recreational boats are on the lower tier of the pecking order. You really came too close to him.
As a lifelong boater ive been "on plane" countless times while boating. Ive also been "on a plane" countless times, but that aways involves an airport.

It’s cool to see y’all get on plane and run that boat, seems like most people I watch run like a trawler saving fuel

Technically in that crossing situation you were the stand on vessel, and they were the give way vessel.
That is correct. We still would have given way if needed. He was really big!😁
@@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop I know the rules (somewhat), but as far as I'm concerned the bigger boat has the right of way.

We passed by that freighter with about a half mile of room between us. The zoom on the camera makes it look closer than it actually was.
